The service is alright, I have never had a bad experience but nothing to write home about. The outside honestly looks like a dump and the bathrooms are not clean. I stopped in for a semi-emply early weekday [sushi] lunch in what appears to be the shell of a former Friendly's restaurant. The new owners apparently haven't changed much - the walls are still pretty bland. The only decor to remind the patrons that there is supposed to be Japanese cooking in the building appears to be cell-phone photos blown up to 8x10s and plastered on the otherwise unadorned walls. And if the 70s-style beaded curtain in the back hall makes you think "exotic," you'll love this place. But I'm here for the food. The host led me to the 8-seat sushi bar facing a thankfully muted television (photo), and I sat down began to skim through the menu. While there was not a very wide selection, I still was able to choose a couple of maki and a handful of nigiri. The server and sushi chef were mostly attentive and courteous and I was presented with a forgettable salad and a lukewarm soup while I waited for my main. The service wasn't too bad, but I did have to flag down both the server and the chef at least once for my main. The two-plate plating could have been a lot better. Both were extremely simple, without any adornment at all - this made the smudges that the chef should have wiped off appear that more significant. The large band of white coloring in the bland, not-spicy salmon maki made me immediately aware that this roll was at least one quarter "filler" (photo), which did not enhance the minced salmon paste texture. The nigiri was more of a mixed presentation. I found the rice was seasoned well, and the tamago was very fresh. But the hamachi seemed to be separating apart, and the second of the pair of ikura had a pink syrup oozing through the bottom rice, sticking the base of the gunkanmaki to the plate. My guess is that when I wasn't looking, the chef tried to save time by pouring the remainder of the jar of salmon roe and remaining "sauce" onto that piece. It was as unappetizing as you can imagine. On item did overly concern me: all of the sushi tasted warmer than I believe it should have (except, of course, for the unagi). I watched the chef pull each item from the cooler as he prepared my selections. I'm pretty sure the cooler itself was a newer Hozhisaki, the chilling tubes frosted and I even reached over and touched the glass with the back of my hand - it seemed cool enough. But temperature definitely changed the texture of the hotate and especially the ikura. Luckily, it wasn't so warm that I was affected later. Great food!!!! Fresh and cooked to perfection. The shrimp tempura appetizer was exceptional. We ordered that and shrimp fried rice and beef fried rice. Both great. The shrimps in the shrimp fried rice were full sized shrimps cooked to perfection not the mushy cocktail shrimps they put in fried rice at other take out chinese places in the Glenville area. Inside is clean and attractive. Also has a full length full service bar. I was very impressed with the food. If you've never tried it you should give it a try you won't be disappointed. I've never had a bad experience at Neon Sushi, either dining in or taking out. The food is always spectacular, and the daily sushi specials haven't disappointed me yet. I only order sushi, but my fiance occasionally enjoys their teriyaki or udon. Not only does the food taste good, it's also plated quite beautifully. The special rolls list is mindbogglingly long, and the prices are very reasonable. We usually spend about $45 for two including tea, appetizer, two entrees, and tip. Out of all the sushi places I've eaten at locally, Neon is the fastest in terms of service. We are always in and out of there in 45 minutes or less. Trust me, I've timed it. If you're local to Glenville, check the Clipper or those coupon books... there's usually a $5 or $10 off coupon in there. read more

Upon recently visiting Neon Sushi with a friend, I was happy to see so many vegan options on the menu. It was hard to decide what to order. I finally settled on the Peanut and Avocado roll and the Sweet Potato roll. I especially loved the Sweet Potato roll as the outside of the sweet potato was breaded and had a nice crunch and the whole roll had a very nice flavor. The Peanut and Avocado roll was good too although I did miss the peanut sauce drizzle that I've had at other sushi places when ordering that roll. I'm sure that I could request it next time though. I wanted to love you so bad. After several ho-hum sushi dinners I got an over cooked shrimp tempura roll that was dried out and inedible a few weeks back. Today, i gave it just ONE more chance and today unfortunately has to be the last. The edamame was not very fresh or salted, the sushi rice was dry and crumbly and the kicker? One hair in your food, or in this case, veggie rice, can be a fluke... but when I'm literally picking several hairs that are cooked into the rice out of the rice on my child's plate- totally inexcusable. About a year ago I moved out here from the Boston Metro area, so I was lamenting the lack of good takeout. Then I found Neon. Neon is not only some of the best sushi I've had in the Capital Region, but it's some of the best sushi I've had period. This place is worth your time. It's not 5 stars though because they have a tendency to pack hot things with cold when you order takeout. If you order all hot dishes or all sushi it's fine, but if you want Katsu and your SO wants Chirashi be prepared for warm fish. read more

It pains me to leave a bad review for this restaurant, having had high hopes for it, due to its being located where there is a great need for true ethnic cuisine, but must needs. Firstly, the good points. The interior is very cool, neon everywhere, almost too cool for a former Friendlys. But for what it is, it works. The service is very attentive, although they must learn to put time between serving courses. All at once is not necessarily a good thing even when you're in a hurry. Still, they are very nice, and are clearly trying to do a great job. Now for the pain points. Everything we ordered was mediocre at best. This includes sushi, chicken hibachi, edamame, miso soup, salad, green tea mochi. The chicken was dry, hard, and had too much black pepper. The tuna sushi was of a very low-grade: edible, but cheap stuff really. The miso was adequate. The edamame pods seemed like they had been beat up. The salad was not bad, a tasty dressing. The mochi arrived half melted, including the half melted whipped cream topping. The bill came to $65 after tip. read more

There aren't a lot of places to go for Sushi in this area and everything is always SO GOOD! They even have options for people (like my husband haha) who isn't a big sushi fan and got lo mein. Their bar is also swagged out. I love the lighting and they have a ton of options to choose from. One thing that kind of cracks me up is the music. One song will be Japanese Pop music and then Taylor Swift to Christmas songs haha. One of my favorite sushi places. When they first opened we were a little leery of the outside appearance, but once you walk in it's really beautiful! I recommend the yellow tail, salmon and tuna sushi. They have good portions, and they are fresh and tasty. I've been to MANY sushi places, from expensive Manhattan restaurants to small local places, and this is one of my favorites. You can tell this is quality fresh sushi. Also the salads are delicious. I've tried a lot of sushi places around the Capital District and Neon Sushi is tied for my favorite place alongside Mr Fuji Sushi. True to the name, the interior is decorated with a plethora of neon lights, which usually don't interfere with anything except watching the news or sports game on the TVs. The sushi preparation and quality of the ingredients here has always been top notch. The owner does keep the restaurant fully staffed, even if there's not a lot of people, which may lead to some extra attention if there are only a couple patrons, but I'm not saying this is a downside. Prices are average for sushi of this quality but you'll be disappointed if you were relying on the old Friendly's exterior to set the price points. read more

I have so many pics of the "love boat" in my photos because that was my daughter's favorite whenever we went there for dinner. My son loved going there as well. Having said all that.....I will never set foot in that place again. I had lunch there one day the week of 9/13/19. Ordered the spicy tuna roll and the spicy salmon roll. Took the first bite and thought the texture of the roll was much denser than I remembered. It wasn't until i took a roll apart and realized why. There was NO FISH in any of the rolls. They were filled with what looked to be dyed rice. This was not an accident, it was quite deliberate. I predict they'll be out of business soon. Never again. read more

I made the mistake of putting my miso soup on the outside of the table while I enjoyed some salad. The waitress walked by and swept my soup with a thank you and scurried away so fast that we had to shout to get her attention 3+ times. I ordered a dinner, not lunch, size hibachi fillet mignon..... With a fresh and vibrant atmosphere, it has a modern look that will appeal to the younger crowd. It's on the more expensive side if you are planning on getting rolls, but they have cheap bento boxes that are delicious and cheap at $10.28. They also offer take-out, which is a great plus! I have picked up food from Neon 50+ times and they have yet to make a mistake on any of my orders. Their precise attention to detail and excellent quality of service keeps me coming back again and again. Mostly I order sushi and it is always very fresh and delicious. The only thing I would take back from all my visits is the number of attempts I gave to the salad portion of the meal. The ginger dressing is similar to that of pouring a glass of orange ginger water on your lettuce slabs. But overall an extremely friendly bunch.
