I don't think I've used this phrase before: "Comfort sushi." That was the feel I got dining at this cozy and charming family-run restaurant. They're very friendly here, and the complimentary mini spring rolls at the start of your meal, and the orange slices at the end were both nice touches. Everything we ordered was delicious and came out quickly. We had a combination of regular and specialty rolls, plus appetizers. But folks at the tables around us had other equally-delicious-looking entrees. And if you're coming here during busy hours, the "batcave" entrance, i.e, off Albany St., is a time-saver. Just be sure you plan ahead, because with only 7 tables and a lot of take-out orders, it can probably get busy. read more

We've been coming here for a good four years and Mizu has become a comfortable and familiar favourite. The lady who's usually at the front of house is always friendly, pleasant, and efficient, but what's even more impressive is the food. With the acknowledgement that not everything on the menu is tops, I know that they can certainly deep fry and stir fry, their complimentary hot spring rolls are always piping hot and delicious, and the stir fry noodles are always beckoning me. The dining room is cozy but comfy and homey, and although they seem to get a majority of orders for pickup, we've always enjoyed dining in. This place is in the same plaza as Prima Pizza. It's on my way to and from work. They are both regular stops for me, either for lunch or dinner, because of their location. Familiarity breeds, not contempt, but a take it for granted attitude, easily dismissed. Please do not dismiss this place. It is a family-owned business that has found its niche - affordable, approachable Japanese food. Lunch for today was Ton Katsu, a favorite, which is a panko breaded and deep fried pork cutlet. It was served in a take away bento-style box over white rice. Included in the lunch was steamed broccoli, harumaki (vegetable spring rolls), a small California roll with gari, wasabi, soy sauce, Tonkatsu sauce, and your choice of either a side salad or miso soup. That's a hearty lunch for about $15. What sets this place apart is the care with which they prepare the food. The Ton Katsu was gbd - golden, brown, delicious. The broccoli - boiled/steamed until it was cooked but still remained "toothsome". Toothsome...I guess I ran out of words but I hope you get what I mean. It's not a place where you will have an omakase style experience. Rather, it scratches the itch when you feel like having Japanese food. A sleeper on the menu - yakitori - chicken on a stick. Try it. You won't be disappointed. Also, agedashi tofu - cornstarch encrusted and deep fried tofu served with a dashi sauce. Think of the texture of a French fry, crunchy outside, soft inside served with a slightly sweet, savory and light soy sauce. I'm getting hungry again. I wonder if they're still open. read more

Someone in our family has a serious sesame allergy. We ordered takeout and put instructions on both the main order and literally every roll "sesame allergy, no sesame." I ordered for pickup because I was in the neighborhood. I don't know if it's cause I was starving after a long work shift or what but the miso was fantastic and so was the spring rolls. Well the epidemic is reeking havoc with eating in restaurants so I'm on the take-out run! Our latest is Mizu Sushi which is located just a stones throw from our home in the Mohawk Plaza so hopefully food will be warm when we eat. I just hate to reheat food as it then becomes leftovers! Yuck... DH called a head with our order and they said it would be about 15 minutes! He ordered #92 Hibachi Chicken served with rice, vegetables and a choice of Miso soup or salad $15.95 and I ordered #117 Chicken Teriyaki served with rice choice of Miso soup or salad $15.50. We both chose salads with a kind of orange dressing in side containers on iceberg lettuce. The dressing was tasty but iceberg wasn't a favorite of mine. The mixed vegetables on both dishes included a large quantity of the same sautéed zucchini, onions, mushrooms, broccoli, carrots and both very tasty. The Teriyaki chicken was pan fried covered lightly with a sauce and sesame seeds sprinkled on top. The Hibachi chicken was lightly breaded and fried with sesame seeds sprinkled also. Both were accompanied with white rice and a horseradish sauce was included in the order in which I did not realize that it was. I put a large amount on my rice and it sure was extremely hot! Next time I will truly try the containers first! As you can see in photo an orange was peeled and added to the dish as a garnish or dessert a delicious ending to two great meals... The most important part to this story is that the food came hot... This is the biggest issue I have with take-out food. Our meals were hot when DH picked them up and warm when we ate them. What a find! We had tickets to a show at Proctors earlier this week and found Mizu here on Yelp. It's definitely off the beaten path at the far, back end of a strip mall (off Central Ave...near Balltown Road). It was even harder to find when we arrived because there was an 18-wheeler making a delivery (and blocking the entrance). We were early-ish...got there at around 5:30 and were the only seated guests for a while. But, the phone was ringing constantly and people kept popping in for pick up orders. There are only 7 tables plus a few seats at the sushi bar...the place is itty bitty. The food was delicious, the sushi was fresh and the service was really friendly. We were brought complimentary mini spring rolls while we waited for our sushi to be prepared. I even liked the green tea - which was refilled several times due to the aforementioned terrific service. Picked up some dinner to go the other day and I have to say it was a great experience! They had my food ready when I walked in and we're so very polite. The woman who gave me my food had the biggest smile! It really was such a nice welcome! I'm always weary that something will be wrong when I get to go from a new place, but everything was just as ordered. The pork gyozas I ordered were crispy and stuffed full. Not to mention, they had some solid flavor! I used the sauce it came with, but they honestly didn't even need it... they' were flavorful all on their own. My husband devoured his dinosaur roll. He couldn't stop saying how good it was and wished he'd gotten two orders. The mei fun I ordered was so fresh and also flavorful. I also appreciate that there was a substantial amount of meat in it as well. I can't wait to try more things from them! I've been coming here for years and always had an amazing experience, but earlier this week I experienced food poisoning. That same night I ate a spicy crab roll, I experienced food poisoning symptoms which lasted two days. Sadly, I will not be returning here. I stopped in for a late lunch, and was able to squeeze into the end of the sushi bar (photo) crowded with other customers. The television was muted and the background music was very low - everyone must be here for the food. The staff was helpful and pleasant as I ordered my usual couple of maki and a bunch of nigiri. I was presented with a couple of spring rolls as an amuse bouche, and a pleasant soup before the main. While waiting, I looked around this small restaurant, hidden away in a tiny strip mall. The decor is not overdone, but unfortunately highlighted with vases of brown-edged, wilting flowers every other place setting. The plating was extremely simple, but just a little different, with no sauce added to the unagi nigiri or maki, and a cream sauce added to the spicy salmon (photo). Both the maki and nigiri were quickly, competently prepared with the only minor presentation error falling upon the tamago breaking apart. Also, as is very common here in the Capital District, no wasabi was added to each nigiri. One surprise: I was expecting the scallop to just be placed atop the sushi rice, but here the chef decided to season and chop up the scallops as a spicy gunkanmaki. I enjoyed the taste, but I sometimes get a little suspicious when extra spices are added. My only low point of the day was the low quality waribashi and the giant splinter that popped off when separating them. I was not injured, and quickly received a replacement. I hardly venture out to this area but I am glad I did. I discovered this small restaurant tucked into the plaza basically across from Mohawk Commons (Balltown Rd). It only has a few tables and won't be able to hold larger parties and does not have teppanyaki tables. The bar area is also proportionate to the size of the restaurant and I noticed single and multiple diners don't mind sitting there. The interior is clean and welcoming. My party of 4 were greeted warmly by who we were introduced to as the owner, who was also our server. She was very nice and friendly, never let our teacups run dry and in general very attentive. The lunch specials were decently priced and portions adequate. The box style lunch included choice of meat, white rice, green salad with ginger sauce, 4 pc California roll, and shumai. The harumaki (spring rolls) were fresh and piping hot when it arrived to table and were perfectly crisp. I had the mixed tempura and the teriyaki salmon...both very good! I also sampled the Su-Sa Combo with various sorts of sashimi and a regular sushi roll. Fish were fresh and sliced appropriately. The most interesting thing we had though was a special appetizer that started off our meal fantastic. I'm not sure if this is on the regular menu but when I was made aware by our server such item was popular I immediately wanted to try it. It was the Seafood Stuffed Tomato. With chunks of tuna and crabmeat + probably some other fish I don't remember and bubbly cheese on top...it was heavenly! They don't have room for all your family plus friends so you'll have to choose who you want to enjoy this hidden gem with! I've ordered TAKE OUT from Mizu Sushi several times over the past year. The quality has been consistently good. I have unfortunately never had the pleasure of dining at the restaurant in person, so I cannot speak to the lusciousness or impressiveness of the in-house dining experience. I can, however, speak to the quality of the food. And some may say that that is most important. It probably is. I have had several of the ROLLS, as well as some SHUMAI, and a salad of SEAWEED. - The ROLLS have been consistently fresh, moist, and luscious in both texture and flavor. The spiced rolls are an enjoyable experience. I have never been poisoned by the food, which is a plus as well. - The SHUMAI and other DUMPS have been plump, rich, and tender. The shumai are sufficiently shrimpy in flavor and essence. For one order, management was kind enough to offer us several free spring rolls too. Generous! - The salad of SEAWEED was mediocre. I've had better, I've had worse. - The side salads and soup that come with some entrees leave much to be desired. If you love several chunks of iceberg with a morsel of tomato, a shred of carrot, and the occasional piece of cucumber, then you will love the side salads. I tend to prefer something more. At the same time, this seems to be the industry standard in the region. Sad! As for the cost, it falls in line with the other Japanese restaurants in the area. Not cheap, but not too expensive to indulge every so often. Overall, I would recommend Mizu for your Japanese food demands. (N.B.: I thought I had taken a photo, but it turns out I did not. Mizu Sushi is an absolute treasure of Schenectady, and probably the capital region in general. My boyfriend and I decided to try it out since it was close to our house and the prices looked good. We were not disappointed. The restaurant itself is pretty small, with about five tables and a small counter to sit at. We tend to go on weekends in the evenings, where the in-restaurant crowd is minimal but the takeout game is strong. The friendly woman at the counter is always happy to greet us, and remembers our drink orders always. It's nice to feel welcome, especially in such a small place. The sushi itself is fresh and delicious. I'm a fan of nigiri, and the rolls are also tasty, though there aren't descriptions for some of the basic rolls so be prepared to Google them if you're not sure what's in them. The price is good, though I can imagine it getting pretty expensive if you have a large stomach and order sushi a la carte, like I do. If you're a fan of fresh sushi and a quiet environment to eat and enjoy, definitely come here. read more

How is it we didn't find this place sooner, given it's practically in our backyard? Perhaps its obscurity in a sideways-to-the-street strip mall featuring a nail place, a pawn shop, and a "spa" open at suspiciously late hours had something to do with it. Or maybe that calling it a "hole in the wall" probably implies far more space than it actually has, making it impossible to take twitchy kids. No matter - having ditched the kids someplace last night (can't quite remember where, I am sure they will make it home eventually), we dropped in and had a great little homestyle meal. The sushi we had as an appetizer was surprisingly saucy (Hawaii roll and Spicy Girl) but pretty decent. Great miso, the usual disappointing green salad. Fabulous and unique udon and mountainous eggplant with chicken that was unusual for Japanese cuisine but still obviously of the genre. The proprietors seemed to know every customer other than ourselves, and it felt more like a little home-based sushi bar in a small rural prefecture than a Ginza - Schenectady strip mall. Very welcoming and warm service. As noted, it is TINY - six seat sushi bar and a half dozen two-seater tables crammed together that ca be combined for larger parties. They had a birthday party with a dozen people during our visit which took up most of the place. It's BYOB although I have a vague suspicion that if you're known to the management a sake bottle can be made to appear from some magic spot. Way up there on the hidden gems / Schenectady cool list. Looking forward to trying out more of the sushi, which is a difficult row to hoe in this region, but it's obvious you can't go wrong with the hot entrees. read more

I came across Mizu Sushi through a mismatch on a search engine site. I'm glad the mistake was made. After reading the reviews, and hearing my husband say he was hungry for sushi, I knew exactly where we were going to try. I'm glad we did! When you walk in, the place appears small. Looks can be deceiving because once we were seated, the place seemed to open right up. The staff was pleasant and attentive. The food was reasonably priced, PERFECT temperature, and tasted very fresh. My husband got the sushi he was craving, while I ordered the Chicken Katsu. Crisp, and not weighed down in oil. The whole meal from appetizer to dessert was WONDERFUL! We give Mizu Sushi a 5-star rating. As we left, we told them we will definitely be back! A "hidden gem" as someone else called it. I tried this place because of all nice reviews. However if you really know what real sushi is like, this place is sadly far far far from that. Rolls are too tightly packed so rice inside tastes like a gunk of rice cake. Rice is supposed to be seasoned for rolls but no taste. Fish in sushi are tasteless.
