1st time last Tuesday for a quick bite. The 'hostess" seemed preoccupied with their cellphone when we arrived but was pleasant. I went for a solo weekday lunch and got to pick my own seat on their patio. I went with the maki lunch which is choice of 2 rolls from the list and soup or salad. I got the salad, Miami roll and Hawaiian roll made with tuna. I also got salmon sashimi which comes with 3 pieces. It came out quickly and my waitress was pleasant. My 1 qualm is the rolls were a little sloppy; they fell apart as soon as I picked them up and the rice was sloppy and not tight. The fish was fresh and tasty but yeah the rolls couldn't been tighter. Sushi was quite solid for the area. We got the crunchy shrimp roll, shrimp tempura, Boston roll, healthy roll, and a California roll because I can currently only eat cooked rolls. While they were a bit on the smaller side and not super rice-heavy, I thought the ratio of rice to filling was appropriate and didn't find myself missing it. Everything tasted fresh and nothing tasted odd. The only con was that for 5 rolls, the restaurant only provided 3 packets of soy sauce which was really just not enough. This is my second time here and it is still one of my favorites in the area. Small space but cozy and quiet if you are there for a late lunch/early dinner. The Tom yum soup had a perfect level of spice. My dining-mate didn't care for the faux-crab in hers but I didn't mind it. The takoyaki special appetizer was a very tasty and well fried bite. The rolls were truly great- good balance of ingredients and just enough sauce! The service was solid- our courses were well timed and they were attentive but not hovering. High quality sushi restaurant in downtown Albany. I ordered 3 rolls: Dragon roll ($12)- very tasty with eel and avocado; New York roll ($8)- really liked the inclusion of mango in here to give some unique sweetness; Salmon family roll ($15)- gotta get this if you're a fan of salmon as it has some spicy salmon inside with salmon and salmon roe on top I also ordered the Creme Brûlée and Berries for dessert ($7). The custard was not as smooth and creamy as it usually is for creme brûlée and it didn't have the normal torched sugar crust on top since the berries were on there. That being said, the assorted berries tasted fresh and sweet and went well with the savory custard. I thought the prices for the creme brûlée as well as the sushi maki rolls were pretty good. I came on a Sunday late afternoon and there were only a few others dining inside, so it was very quiet. There is lots of seating inside and also a parking lot conveniently right next to the restaurant. The staff were fairly friendly and the service speed was decent. Overall, I don't have many complaints about Shogun, and the reason why I'm not giving 5 stars is because it didn't have anything particularly special about it and the environment was a bit too quiet and empty. Nevertheless, the sushi is definitely high quality and Shogun is certainly deserving of at least 4 stars. It should also be deserving of a visit from you if you are a fan of sushi. read more

This was the first place I ate at in Albany when I came for my interview (didn't know I'd be here for four years at the time) and I just forgot to review it all these years. Their sushi is surprisingly fresh for Albany and we've been ordering platters pretty often, especially during the past few months. I'm not a huge fan of a lot of the special rolls, but sticking to regular sushi here is very safe and the best I've had in the region. I've also had their steak, curry, and some other dishes, which pale in comparison to the quality of the sushi, but nothing was terrible. read more

Driving aimlessly around Albany, with nothing else to do, I stumbled upon Shogun and immediately had a craving for a spicy tuna roll. How does one trust an unknown sushi place in an unfamiliar landlocked city? Start with a few rolls, then go from there. Starving, I took a quick look at the menu and ordered a Spicy Crunchy Tuna roll, Spicy Salmon roll, and Spicy Crunchy Yellowtail roll. The "crunchy" effect is made by adding bits of fried tempura batter to the spicy fish mash. Three rolls for less than $20! And a good amount of wasabi and ginger to boot. The spice added a kick but wasn't too outrageous, the crunch was minimal but effective. The rice was subtly sweet and didn't overpower the rolls. Overall, great rolls for an excellent price. Given the quality of the rolls, I'm definitely coming back to try the sashimi. On top of all this, there's free parking out back and the wait staff were really friendly -- Shogun is definitely worth a try! read more

I've driven by this place several times when I'm downtown Albany. I walked in and I really like the atmosphere the decor and the people were very nice. I started off with the scallion pancake which came out different than any of the other scallion pancakes I've had. It had a cream sauce for dipping. it wasn't bad it was just different I would probably get it again. the scallion pancakes were just a little on the greasy side but still very good. Next, I ordered the tuna roll, pink lady, shrimp tempura, and masago. The tuna was fresh the shrimp was cooked perfectly. I'm a sucker for masago so anytime they have it on a menu I always order it, everything was great. Summary- Shogun Albany delivers very good raw fish and pretty good rolls with excellent service in a nice atmosphere. Food- 4 Stars Apps- We started with Shumai, Edamame, and Tempura shrimps in Spicy mayo. They were all very excellent. Sushi/Maki- We ordered a Sushi/Sashimi special, which is a relatively economical way to get a ton of raw fish if you are into real sushi. We also ordered a few rolls. The raw fish (Sushi and Sashimi) was downright excellent awesomeness. The rolls left something to be desired versus our prior visit to Shogun Delmar. Most notably the spicy crunchy yellowtail, which was heavy handed w/ spicy mayo and lacking any crunch. Service- 5 Stars Great waiter was timely and friendly. Atmosphere- 4 Stars It's newer, well appointed, clean and nice. Drinks- 4 Stars Didn't really get anything special but hot sake was as good as hot sake can be. I find this location to be cozier than the one in Delmar. Never had take out from this place, but it's probably better as an eat-in restaurant. I was losing hope that I would find good sushi in the Albany area after Kuma Ani stopped serving sushi. We tried SO many mediocre places. Then we found Shogun. We ordered take out. 2 rolls, agedashi tofu appetizer and salmon sashimi. It was SO yummy. Really pleased with my first Shogun experience. This place came highly recommended, and there was not one thing I didn't like. The atmosphere is fairly standard for a sushi joint - nothing special, though I did really enjoy their gold foil wallpaper. We shared 4 appetizers, though they were all much larger than I was expecting. From what I tried, the edamame was good (could have used a little more salt), as was the veg tempura. I'd never had scallion pancakes before, and I was less thrilled with those, but my table mates informed me they were the best they had ever eaten, consistently, so their review factors in to mine. We then ordered 4 rolls to share - the pink panther (spicy tuna, spicy mayo, and there were peanuts in it, which was a strange texture, but very good!), Christmas roll (tuna inside and out, just my style!), sweet potato tempura (always a tasty staple), and spider (personal staple). We didn't totally finish our appetizers to leave room for the rolls, and no matter how hard we tried, there were a few pieces left to attest to our full bellies. Shogun was a pleasant surprise, much improved since my last visit a couple of years ago. I was initially concerned as I entered, when the server provided me both chopsticks and a fork. Usually this simple act would force me to consider: who are the usual patrons, their expectations and the restaurant's responses? I was seated at the sushi bar and greeted the two chefs. I was very happy there was no annoying TV in the background, though the background music was relatively loud. While skimming the menu, I watched the chef break down a fish, and only enough to prepare for the current service (photo). This reminded me of other, less authentic, local restaurants that "forget" this step, and simply stuff their presentation coolers full of prepackaged bags. This is why I sit at the sushi bar. With things looking up, I selected a few basic items - a couple of maki and a handful of nigiri. The server was attentive, but a little confused with part of my order - I was happy to see she immediately resolved my concerns by consulting with the chefs. My order was prepared quickly and plated simply (photo). I found all of the items very good, except for the tamago, in which the egg appeared not be be layered/ rolled, but cooked in some other manner. With a full kitchen in back, I sometimes wonder why a sushi restaurant cannot prepare the tamagoyaki in the traditional manner, as layered scrambled eggs are one of the simplest, easiest and profitable items to prepare. Nabeyuki Udon- Overall this dish was mediocre. The best part was the tempura shrimp with crunchy batter which made an excellent bite. However the chicken was inedible. It didn't look or taste fully cooked so I ended up not eating the chicken. The noodles were good but there was definitely not enough. There should have been more noodles to the ratio of soup and other toppings like the egg and vegetable shreds. The overall flavor was mild---definitely ask for some spice to add seasoning. read more

This place rocks. It meets my "Fresh" & "Tasty" metric. It is super Fresh, which is important in this area full of asian options. I will no longer order sesame chicken from any other asian restaurant in this locale, except for Shogun. I also tried their Pad Thai, just to see. Well, not best compared to Suckhothai or Tapasia, but not bad either. I will ask for extra spicy next time, and see if that makes a difference. Don't expect a Japanese place to have the best PAd Thai, and only tried it since someone else said it was good. It was good, just not the best. However, the sesame chicken was fantastic. Everything is SO fresh here. And they deliver to my partner's apartment! I love that these guys are not completely fusion-asian as most places are. They're pretty solidly Japanese, with a few concessions. (Fried Rice, Lo-mein noodles, and pad thai are here, but most of the rest is more of a Japanese origin.) The miso is one of our favorites. The sushi has always been really good. The ginger dressing tastes like it's housemade. The tempura is never too greasy. Definitely go here! read more
