Tried this place for the first time. Bright, clean, and attractive. We were the only ones dining in, but there was a steady stream of take-out customers and delivery couriers. We greatly enjoyed the food, which defied the usual Asian conventions. A glass of "Plum Wine" was sweet, as expected, but with stronger notes of cherry and not as full bodied; still, enjoyable. Hot tea came, not as the usual thin green tea in a teapot, but a full ceramic mug of a smoky blend that was delightful. A complimentary bowl of fried wonton and duck sauce were made with a richer dough than the usual lean wonton wrappers. My spring roll and General Tso's chicken were both shatteringly crisp; the unaccustomed flavor profiles were nonetheless delicious. The chicken was fresh, clean white meat, served with very fresh steamed broccoli and flavorful, fresh orange slices. My companion's dinner bento box had huge portions of all the sides; the tempura was light, crisp, and not oily. Gyoza were large, well stuffed, and flavorful, and the teriyaki salmon nicely sauced, fresh, plump, and not overdone. Staff were attentive and friendly. The menu is thorough but not overwhelming, and the prices reasonable. We were left torn between wondering why there were not more diners, and delighting in having the place all to ourselves. I just got an Egg Foo Young combo platter and Won Ton soup from this place and it was by far the greasiest, tasteless, smelly & I suspect spoiled Chinese Food order ivevever eaten in my life. The whole thing cost me just under $20 and after eating some of the soup and a few bites of the Egg Foo Young I had to throw it away. As soon as I opened the combo platter I detected a foul smell which concerned me. Since I was so hungry I decided to try it anyway. It was very bad. The fried rice had this strange smell as well and the whole meal was so greasy and slimy I ended up throwing all of it away. It came with an Egg Roll that had so much grease on the wrapper I didn't even open it. I'm going to see about reporting this place to the health department. Came here because it was one of the few places open on a Sunday and we had never been here before! With strip mall joints like this, it's usually hit or miss and we were ready to take that chance (especially since we also needed to grab groceries and this was very conveniently located). Unfortunately, this was a bit of a miss for us. To start, my partner called the bathrooms a "liminal space." Eerily dimmed and at the end of a dark hallway, I was waiting for someone to pop out at me. The rest of the space was fine, a bit kitschy with the drop ceiling partially painted and little trinkets displayed everywhere. The food came out pretty quickly. My favorite thing we ordered was the "sun flower" which was salmon and mango sushi arranged in a flower shape. We also ordered edamame, which came out just fine as well. When it came to the main dishes, my partner got unagi with beef and he could barely eat it because the beef was so overcooked. The flavors were pretty awful, too. I ordered the dinosaur roll which lacked flavor and also made me horribly sick all night long. I didn't go to bed until 4AM. If it was tasty, maybe it would have been more worth it. Still awesome and has the freshest fish for it's wonderful sashimi and sushi! Somewhere I have my own photo taken of one of my daughters and I, just like the many up on their photo walls! I was unfortunately disappointed by my early dinner at this darkly-lit, strip-mall restaurant about 1/4 mile west of Troy. With only four other diners seated, the single sushi chef was busy enough with about five small take-out orders to delay my order to 30 minutes from the time I arrived. As I initially sat at the empty sushi bar, I thought I briefly noticed a peculiar fishy smell. The display cooler seemed normal, and the food I was served had a fresh appearance, texture and taste, so I could not identify the source. I did see that none of the fish in the cooler was individually wrapped, as I have seen at every other restaurant. Instead, one single giant sheet of plastic film covered all of the items together. There were no settings prepared at the sushi bar, so it took the waitress a minute or two to assemble the cloth napkin, fork, waribashi and bowls. I was handed a bowl of fried wonton crisps and "orange colored dip," from the stack of pre-filled chip bowls, sitting over at the corner of the sushi bar. I amused myself, noticing that my "chip" bowl was chipped. However, this did not distract me from the lukewarm tea and bland soup I was served. As I was killing time during my extended wait for my entree, one of the waitresses had her shift meal. Despite all of the empty tables in the restaurant, she grabbed a seat next to me at the bar. While this is usually not allowed at other restaurants, I once again lowered my expectations here. After she finished eating, the chef finally presented me with a small amuse bouche: chopped up tempura covered tiny flavorless fishbits over wakame. When my entree came, as two separate plates, I was less than impressed with my usual order of a couple of maki and a handful of nigiri. The plating was pretty simple, with slices of lemon as the only decoration. While the presentation was competent, the flavors were not there. The rice itself was very bland, wasabi was missing from the nigiri, the spicy salmon was not spicy, overpowered by the "crunch" filler. The egg cake, thankfully not advertised as tamago, was strange: surprisingly warm without the taste of eggs fresh-from-the-pan. The mackerel was pretty small, as I watched the chef open and slice off the first pieces from a vacuum sealed package. I was finally poured hot tea - just in time to pay my bill. So tonight we ate at the Okinawa it was a very decent place to go and get Chinese we took it out and we ate at home but they were fast courteous and delivered the food to us in a timely manner when we got there. The food was good overall the one thing I would say is that I would definitely tomorrow make sure that you look at the menu when you order because some of the things I've never had with spice such as sesame chicken. It kind of threw me off when I took a bite of it and it was pretty spicy I'm not against spice but when I'm not looking for it or wanting it on my food it makes for difficult dish 2 continue to eat. It was like they made it with the General Tsao Chicken sauce instead of the sesame chicken sauce and it just doesn't make sense to me. I will say though that everything else was delicious and with that being said I would recommend this place to anyone who would like a good Japanese or Chinese restaurant cuisine to try. NEVER AGAIN! I'd given up on this place years ago, and I don't know why I bothered to try again. 2 rolls for $25, and the fillings are mostly cucumber, up to 75% of the roll. Barely any of the premium ingredients used. The sushi rice is also not top quality. 1 roll was sloppy and fell apart. Since the first day I came here with three of my fraternity brothers, this place has always been at the top of my list of great places near RPI that serves awesome sushi at reasonable prices and also a very welcoming atmosphere. The place definitely has a warm and casual atmosphere and a nice raised porch for those looking for the Japanese wooden flooring house feel. Definitely a great place for a romantic dinner. Took my girlfriend here once and she can't get enough of the place and the sushi! The owner is a young woman who helps out in the kitchen but also occasionally manages the front and at the sushi bar when it gets busy. The waitstaff are always accommodation and offer speedy and prompt service unless of course it gets busy especially during weekends. The sushi is definitely top notch and I would honestly say it rivals the overpriced ones they serve at classier places like Koto's in Albany. Whatever type of sushi you like, they're willing to make it if you know what's in it like my girlfriend who always craves for spicy crab rolls. Aside from the sushi dishes, their other dishes are just as satisfying. A single Bento box is enough for even me without an appetizer. The noodle dishes are delicious and awesome to boot. I recommend if anyone goes there to try the Nabe Yaki Udon which is filling and cool to look at with the fish flake shavings that move with the steam coming out! Also if you eat there, they give out a complimentary fruit dessert dish at the end! Ordering take-out is a hit or miss depending on how busy the restaurant is. The owner does the delivery herself so I gotta give her props for providing this service even if it does take longer then if you went there yourself. Usually my boyfriend and I come here for an easy bite because I love literally 4 minutes from it, I've timed it. Sometimes they have a LivingSocial deal or a coupon and that's when we go. The first three times were mild experiences. We enjoyed what we ate but it didn't excite our taste buds. Pretty basic sushi. And we'd get a mix of their specialty rolls and basic rolls. Occasionally I order two rolls for my lunch because the total comes to around $11 and I like sushi for lunch sometimes. They never disappoint with how quick they are to get your order ready for pickup. Once we got delivery and that was pretty fast too. BUT I've saved the best part for last- Just this week I got one roll for lunch at Okinawa and it was so amazing. It was just a spicy tuna roll but it was so fresh and it filled me up. So the very next day my boyfriend and I ate there; we ordered the eel roll, the spicy salmon roll, the lion roll, and their curry chicken. THE LION ROLL WAS TO DIE FOR. We loved it so much that now I contemplate getting it everyday but I'm going to pace myself. The curry chicken was also good. I like Okinawa because the menu has a blend of Chinese and Japanese options. To sum it up: We've eaten there many times and recently they just became my favorite sushi place. Okinawa is a below average Chinese and Japanese restaurant. Inside it's dirty and the decor looks like something from the 80s. I ordered sesame chicken and it was bad. The chicken was chewy and it was slimy. It didn't even taste like chicken. Also for some reason when I first walked in the hostess asked if I wanted a massage, it was weird. Nice fresh sushi/sashimi and other Japanese and Chinese entrees for they members of the family who prefer cooked dishes. I always start with Miso soup, Edamame and steamed shrimp shumai. Then usually a roll, they are all really good. Then a few pieces of sushi or sashimi. Nice Sake (hot and cold) and beer selection. Japanese sodas are a nice treat for the kids. I'm not sure as to why there is lemon with the sushi but I'm praying it wasn't to mask lack of freshness. I guess I'll find out within the next 24 hours. One of the sushi pieces, mackerel, still had skin on it. I've never seen chicken teriyaki served with no rice either. Ordered takeout from here tonight. Normally I'm not a fan of takeout sushi, but I'll go that route when I'm in a pinch. It's not the best way to have sushi, but it's usually fine. Tonight was my first time trying Okinawa. I decided after reading so many glowing reviews it was about time to give it a try, and really I don't get the fuss. Maybe the rolls and dinners are better? I'm not a big fan, of rolls so I will probably never be able to answer that question myself. So my order, 2 pieces of shrimp sushi, 2 pieces of salmon, and 2 pieces of tuna, all ordered on brown rice. The person on the phone said it would be 10mins, I thought "hmm, that's really fast". The place was absolutely empty so I guess that's why. The restaurant is super cute, BTW. First dislike my brown rice was white. Second the rice was gummy, had no flavor and there was way too much of it. I guess what's good about that is it doesn't fall apart. Third the salmon was cut really thick and the texture just wasn't doing it for me. I like my salmon sliced thinner. The salmon I had here was chewy and way too thick/firm. I gave it to my cat. Fourth, I got an eraser sized amount of wasabi with my order and it was chalky. Fifth, if I give you a $5.00 tip on $17.50 followed by a smile and "have a nice night" simply for ringing me out.. say something back. The shrimp sushi was fine(it's hard to screw that up), the tuna was good. I discarded half of the rice that came with each piece. Two stars for those two good things. The sushi at Okinawa is a bit cheaper than the usual place I go to, and there's more rice. More food for less cash, I guess that's one reason people come here. There also aren't many options for sushi in the Troy area. I'll try Okinawa again to see if I just got them on an off night but was not impressed and for now will continue driving to Latham for my sushi. read more

The town of Wynantskill brings one thing to mind: where the hell is Wynantskill? Once you find it, you should try Okinawa, yet another Japanese/Chinese joint on a tiny strip mall. Everyone has their favorite sushi place, so I don't think it's very likely you'll be swayed by a single review, particularly one written on the basis of a first visit, but it's really a decent place, clean, reasonably spacious and modestly appointed. The emphasis is clearly on Japanse cuisine. We had the negimaki beef appetizer, a rainbow roll, salmon and tuna sashimi, a couple of other items, a few Tigers and a kid-size bento box selection, which is indeed very cool if you're a kid. No uni on the menu, though... it's become difficult to find fresh uni upstate. All seafood was very fresh and portions were generous. The large carved fresh fruit platter at the end of our meal was an unexpected treat. Every dish was assembled with graceful, subtle flavor, and it's pretty evident this evening's sushi chef had sensitivity and skills not common to this area. Okinawa has none of the flash of Koto's in Albany, but they rival and in some cases surpass it in quality. We liked this place a lot. read more

I got take out from there this past weekend for the first time, I ordered online and it was super easy. My boyfriend and I ordered a few sushi rolls and the crab rangoons. My favorite was the philly roll and the spicy tuna was delish as well. I would get the crab Rangoon's again as they filled them with a good amount which was awesome (sometimes places don't fill enough). We called in takeout without a menu - just some standard Japanese menu items. The service for our takeout was great they hustled to get the status as soon as we walked in the door. The food was variable. My unadventuresome American palate sushi (Calif roll, sweet potato roll, shrimp tempura roll) was good and freshly made. My daughter loves the shrimp tempura, which comes with a wide variety of tempura veggies. The "shrimp" are gigantic and scrumptious. My husband was quite disappointed with his beef teriyaki. He said it tasted like it had been boiled and then stirred around in the sauce. Very well done and dry (he prefers rare beef). The restaurant looked nice and clean, although didn't check washrooms. The prices aren't to bad - but the sushi isn't that great either. I had the Sushi Deluxe box (takeaway) - with tuna rolls, 9 pieces of sushi, miso soup and salad. I would recommend customers to - drop the entrees - and just order from the card. The soup was mediocre and salad was a joke. The sushi wasn't bad or inedible. It just wasn't very good either. For 20bucks I don't feel ripped-off compared to general Sushi prices. But I rather spend my dollars on a different cuisine then with more taste. This rating is purely based on the horrible service I just received, where usually I have enjoyed my meals an service at Okinawa. My boyfriend and I went today, and upon arrival the entire place was empty, except there were three staff seated in the back by where the sushi is made. They were chit chatting, and didn't even move when we walked in, and stood at the front. We waited for a few minutes, and then took it upon ourselves to sit down. Still, a few minutes goes by, until finally one of the staff came over and asked if we wanted anything to drink. We ordered waters, and she brought us the menu. After maybe 30 seconds the waitress and back and asked if we were ready to order. I asked about the lunch special menu, and she said "oh, that ended at 2:30". Now...I understand rules are rules, but I looked at my watch right when she said that and it was 2:36. We had been waiting for them to even wait on us longer than that. So, now you are not going to offer your ONLY customers in the place the lunch special because you took your time to get there so now it's conveniently 6 minutes past the time of lunch? I was so upset and disappointed that I ended up leaving $2 for the waitresses "trouble" for getting us water, and said we had to leave. I actually regret leaving the money. Okinawa, hidden across the river in Wynantskill, offers a reward for those willing to take the drive out there. The food is fresh, delicious, unique and can easily compete with the over-hyped NYC or LA Japanese sushi bars. I actually have only ever found comparable sushi in Montreal. Nothing else in the Capital District can compare. Okinawa is a diamond in the rough for the Capital District. Their menu is full of different rolls you won't find anywhere else. My particular favorites are the Spicy Tuna Roll and Rockin' Roll (white fish tempura roll). They have your standard fare cucumber roll, California roll, tuna maki, etc but take a chance on some of their creative rolls. The area is saturated with mediocre Japanese restaurants, and worse, Chinese restaurants that serve sushi (especially in the college areas). One could easily just drive to Albany or Latham for a quick but unsatisfying Japanese meal, but those willing to travel to Wynantskill will experience a Japanese dining adventure. Like any good independent restaurant, they have some items that are not on the menu. Try asking for uni maki (sea urchin), spicy mussels or the T&K Roll. Dinner times can be busy, but you can always be seated right away for lunch time. read more

Every time I eat at Okinawa I leave feeling refreshed and satiated. The food is so fresh and light that I never get that feeling of "ohhhh, I ate WAY too much". It's one of our favourite places to go. I usually get (vegetarian) sushi -- they have avocado, asparagus, tempura sweet potato, cucumber, and radish. My meat-eating companions assure me that the sushi with fish and other meats is wonderfully fresh. The edamame is the best I've ever eaten, and their teriyaki tofu is outstanding. I also love their soba vegetable soup. And the tempura is wonderful. Basically, everything I've had is fantastic. Yes, I'll admit that we tried this primarily because we live so close. It's hidden in a little strip mall, but I've found that these can be the best restaurant finds if you peek inside. I know if we moved away from here we would still visit. Some nights they can be outrageously busy but on a quiet night, it's a relaxing and soothing place to eat. They are open quite late (10:30) I think every day of the week, which is a bonus. The decor can be a little tacky it's true, but not overly so. It's still a nice and spacious atmosphere to eat in. Okinawa is some of the best "Americanized Chinese" food in the region. You can get great General Tso's here, anything you'd get at your standard Chinese restaurant is a bit better here. Costs a smidge more but it's worth it. But I kind of think they have the Chinese food just because people expect it when they hear a store with an Asian-sounding name. Not that I really mind - it's better than the rest in the Troy-ish area. The real reason to be here though is for their Japanese menu. That's where they have great quality and authentic, delicious entrees. I don't even know where else I can get great tempura around here. Sushi is good the one time I've had it. After getting Chinese delivery for weeks, I go for a sit down meal and I'm surprised by the sheer quality of the place as a restaurant too. Excellent service, great waitstaff, great quality food. It's a great Japanese place, especially for the region. Really there's nothing bad I can say about them. Every time I order from them or go in to eat, I know I'm getting a delicious experience. read more

Okinawa in Wynantskill is consistent in its fresh and quality sushi. 99% of the food I eat at Okinawa is sushi. They have the standard fare and many unique ones as well. It's one of the few places in the area you can find a white fish tempura sushi roll (ask for the "Rock-n-Roll"). Another favorite is how they prepare spicy tuna (which is also available in yellow tail), with not too much spice and a bit of crunch added. There's also daily specials of more experimental rolls. Uni is on the menu, but only when it's fresh, which is a good sign of a properly-run sushi restaurant. One complaint I will mention: if you are a fan of the tamago (egg) sushi, do not order it as take-out. They chill it far too long to survive the delivery, and as such it tastes nearly frozen. Served fresh in the restaurant, however, it is top notch. Their Japanese cuisine, appetizers and Chinese food are pretty good too, but their strength is in the sushi. I would suggest them over the other area's Chinese restaurants if you like fresh Chinese food, as it's less greasy than others. The owners are in the middle of purchasing another Chinese restaurant in Rensselaer, and so the service has been slower at Okinawa due to the split workforce. Still, I understand, and pick this restaurant over others due to the quality food they serve. One thing about Wynantskill is that its residents are fiercely loyal to the businesses they like. Many restaurants come and go in this area. Okinawa has stood the test of time, along with LaBella Pizza. There's a reason for this, Okinawa is a quality restaurant. read more

My wife and I have visited on 3 separate occasions, once over three years ago and twice over the last couple months. We've always stayed on the Chinese side of the menu and were pleased with the selections each time. Personally I would have preferred a little more fiery spiciness on a couple of the dishes but each visit we were impressed with the presentation, taste and quality of service. Even the prices were reasonable. The nice little palette cleansing fruit provided (free of charge) at the end of the meal was also a nice addition to our visits. Each time we were there it was on a weeknight and the place was never packed but there was a continuous stream of customers coming in for a meal. We were both surprised at the amount of people coming in for take out, not sure why this surprised us except for sheer volume if people. Next time I think I'll try something from the Japanese side of the offerings... After all I have been known to crush some sushi on occasion. We'll be back, and the only reason they don't get 5 stars is because of the spiciness comment above and I felt that our food took a little longer than I would have expected with the number of people seated for dinner... but then again all those take out orders. read more

I almost always order from this restaurant and am usually satisfied. However, today I ordered two rolls. A golden dragon roll, a lion roll and crab rangoons. I had asked to change part of the order to not contain avocado and no spicy tuna. When I arrived to pick up my order, I was told that I could no longer ask to change out items like this again but that they would do it for me "this one time." What restaurant doesn't accommodate the customer? Just because it's unconventional for them. I thought they were there to prepare food for customers. So I just brushed it off. We are never disappointed in Okinawa as long as we order from the Japanese side of the menu. The Udon Noodle soups are sensational and filling- loaded with vegis, and home made noodles with you choice of meat, chicken, or seafood. Miraculously, the huge Iron bowl stays hot the entire time it takes to eat it - which is considerable. I love the Bento box when I am very hungry with the shrimp curry for my choice of entree with in it. This place has the best Gyozas (sp?) anywhere. Light and flavorful, I could devour a heap of them! The pepper tuna appetizer is another excellent choice- as long as you LIKE black pepper. The mixed drinks could be better , but they have a decent selection of beers, and I love the hot sake, served in traditional manner. My husband always orders sushi and loves it every time. Man, I have eaten a lot of different Asian food. Generally Albany has been a HUGE disappointment. Thank god I don't live there anymore and I live in Troy.
