When we entered there was no host at the counter, we were just standing there for a minute or two before we started searching for someone. Finally, a lady came out the back kitchen and seated us. We just wanted a small lunch since we were planning on picking up food from Che Figata later that evening. Well, I guess there is no regular menu only the all you can eat buffet menu ($28 each)? The way it works is there is actually no buffet at all, you must place an order for items on the buffet menu then wait for the food to be delivered. If you're still hungry and want more you need to place another order. On one hand, your food would be fresh and not sitting out on a buffet; alternatively, most people will fill up before their second or third item arrives. Something to note is you can only order 2 pieces of sushi or sashimi per order, and one sushi roll per order. It wasn't too busy; however, customers that were already seated were just twiddling their thumbs waiting for more food to arrive and there was only one server and she didn't look like much of a go-getter. After about 5-minutes of waiting around for something to happen we decided it would be better if we got the hell out of there before we were stuck sitting around like everyone else. I guess this concept works as this restaurant does have good reviews, but I just didn't like the vibe and couldn't risk a potential bad experience on Mother's Day. Sorry Sushi Shine, we decided to go to Sawa Shushi Bistro instead and had a wonderful experience there.

So, we decided to give Mr. Fuji a shot since it's in the same shipping center and had solid reviews. We were seated immediately and ordered a bunch of stuff: assorted rolls, sushi pieces, salads and soups. Everything was absolutely delicious and our friends were happy (which was the most important thing!). Service was excellent and friendly....i would definitely go back if I'm in the neighborhood. As the attentive server escorted me to the 7-seat sushi bar (photo) - I found the interior was also minimally decorated, but good news! the giant TV was only visible from a private side area. I was presented a menu without photos, of which I always approve, but on the other hand, waribashi and paper napkins are their standard for lunch. Although the sushi selections were not that extensive, I was able to order a couple of rolls and a few nigiri, as usual, following a satisfying soup. The plating of the main was simple and unadorned, (photo) but competent, with excellent wasabi. I won't say freshly ground today, because I didn't watch the personable chef grind it right in front of me. But very good, and extremely spicy. The nigiri was good, with the sweetened tamago clearly rolled, not "egg cake"/frittata and the ikura and hamachi both very fresh. Also, individual nigiri had a small dab of wasabi under the fish, a step often omitted by chefs here in the Capital Region. The only mistake on the plate was the unagi - charred carbon black edges during reheating, and unfortunately, the chef still served them. Both maki were much smaller than I normally expect, but very well done. The spicy hamachi was surprisingly very spicy, and the pleasant unagi cucumber satisfied. The nabeyaki is the most recent examine. A single shrimp tempura on a saucer with udon? All other similar venues I've dined at serve two or three, if not more, pieces of tempura to go with udon. The katsu is another example where the perfectly cooked katsu goes nowhere because there's only a pinch of cabbage and shredded carrots you go with it, and similar venues offer a complete, well-thought-out, satisfying meal experience that have included accompaniments like different pickles and korotke. I give props to them for their agedashi tofu and mixed tempura, but their Rainbow roll got me flabbergasted because it was so basic and not unexciting to look at and eat. I hope they continue to improve and adapt.

To start, the restaurant is located in the basement of a brewery so it feels a little sneaky (in a fun) way as you enter. Inside there's a speakeasy atmosphere and in my opinion, perfectly charming. As soon as you enter, you are greeted and if a bit early have the option to grab a drink before the service begins. All meals are timed to last 1 hour and the chefs do an incredible job of getting through the service on time without making the experience seem rushed. You are also offered the chance to order à la carte which my husband took full advantage and ordered the house special "Big Mac". Truly a great dining experience in the Capital region.

I don't know if this happens to them frequently but I found the staff to be very nice and accommodating. Since this was a spur of the moment move, I didn't really care what was in the sushi since I eat most seafood. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't fried. This had to be healthy. I picked the Dragon Roll. It was wrapped in avocado. It was delicious. I wolfed a piece down and offered some to a friend who was with me. He originally declined but then changed his mind. He asked what seafood were we eating. I didn't know. It tasted like smoked oysters. We were about three-quarters done with the sushi when I finally looked it up on the menu. It was eel. No big deal for me. Asians eat eel. It's sometimes a bit fatty in texture but this wasn't. It was the best eel I've had in years but my poor friend who never had eel before looked a bit appalled. He admitted it tasted good. I apologized and promised to check next time before I place an order so there would be no more surprises. Of course, we had a good laugh. When I lived in NYC, AYCE places were fun but you expected very small rolls with very tiny pieces of fish, and many restrictions/added costs for special rolls. At Hokkaido, the entire menu is AYCE. Appetizers. Sides. Special rolls. Hand rolls. Sushi/sashimi. All of it. I was floored. This place is a steal and a half and I just wish it had been more crowded on a Saturday night.
