Not my favorite Thai in the area. It does have my favorite Thai dish Khao Soi. Not many Thai restaurants in the states serve this. This one does but the crispy noodles uh, not really what is in the original. But it is very close to work and quick delivery for lunch specials, when having that Thai lunch craving but can't break away from the office. read more

I don't have any photos to share. I bought take out and I ate it in a hurry. I was so hungry. I've never been here before. I loved the meal. I stopped in at about 4:15pm. There was already a large family sitting down to a meal. As I waited for my order, more groups of people came to dine. I guess it was early dinner. The server was very nice and helpful. I ordered a fried taro appetizer, seaweed salad and a green curry shrimp entree. The entree took a while, but it was worth the wait. The shrimps were large or jumbo size. Seasonings were just right. The order came with plenty of vegetables: string beans, green peppers, bamboo shoots and Thai basil. Some local Thai restaurant dishes don't provide enough vegetables. So relieved that wasn't a problem here. I enjoyed the taro even more than I expected to. It was crunchy and potato-like. They did a nice fry job. The seaweed salad was fresh. I enjoyed that, too. The restaurant isn't large, but there seems to be plenty of seating. It's cute and welcoming with a remarkable number of healthy plants despite the fact that there isn't a lot of natural light. The server smiled when I asked about the plants. She explained that the owner loves plants and somehow the plants have managed to thrive despite the low light levels. So my visit also turned out to be a lesson in horticulture. Capital Thai has been around for a number of years. I don't know if the same kitchen staff has been here all along, but based on my experience it deserves a higher overall rating than it's received on Yelp. As some reviewers have mentioned, the fact that it's located a strip mall with plenty of parking is also a plus. It's sandwiched between Albany's first recreational cannabis store and a massage parlor. According to the server, so far that hasn't resulted in much crossover business. Hopefully, it will. We ordered a lot of food a little after 7pm and had it before 8pm. I got the shrimp pad Thai since that's my favorite. It was really good! I hadn't gotten Thai in a while from here. I ordered the chicken satay too. I love it with the peanut sauce and the cucumber sauce. Or are they dips? Hmmm. Four skewers per order. We were thankful they were open during this Covid 19 shut in and so quick. I had it for lunch today too. Still delicious on day two. I may have it for dinner too. I ordered shrimp fried rice and pork fried rice too. So much food! We will probably be eating it tomorrow too!! read more

Delicious soup! Owner was very friendly. I was surprised by how flavorful the meal was. A step above most Thai take-out I've had.

It is very tempting to give Capital Thai 4*, but I am trying not to let Albany get the best of me. Must. Try. And. Keep. My. Standards. Here were the holy-shit-this-is-good-stuff moments: 1) Papaya salad: Seriously spicy. 2) Papaya salad: Whole dried shrimp. 3) Pad Thai: Pickled vegetable. Most ethnic food around the area sucks so bad, because I get the distinct impression that the restaurants are trying to cater to white people. (Can I say that?) Capital Thai goes where others fear to tread. That's not to say they don't do their fair share of pandering. I want to know who the regional restaurant supply rep is that has managed to sell sushi equipment to every asian-centric establishment. That person must be filthy rich, and he (or she) must be stopped. Here is where I get picky. Despite the pickled vegetable (an absolute must of a good pad thai) the noodle dish was lacking depth and flavor. Could have used more tamarind and fish sauce. But it was a solid, respectable effort, and wasn't flawed by being overly sweet. And despite the heat and the plump dried shrimp, the papaya salad felt a little wilty. Or at least wiltier than I would like. Which was still better than the deep fried tofu which was just kind of rubbery and chewy. I like mine crisp on the outside, pillowy on the inside. But these tofu slices were cut way to thin to every be allowed to shine. (My wife thinks they were just simply over-fried). The location is odd. The place is so clean that it feels almost sterile. I'd prefer it to be smaller and dirtier, with a little more soul. Thai food is soulful food, and this room is its antithesis. But overall, it's very good. I'm thrilled to have decent Thai food in the area. And this will clearly be the place I go to scratch that itch. Hopefully, as I try more and more of the menu, CT will earn it's 4th star. read more

Quite simply, a treasure. Housed in an unassuming location not far from Home Depot, this is not only the best Thai restaurant in the Capitol District, it's better than most in Berkeley and Oakland. Their pad Thai is delicious as are their curries. Fresh ingredients, authentic, and perfectly spiced (low to moderate), and very flavorful. Excellent delicious Thai. Friendly competent servers. Decor is not its strong suit, but it's clean. I have eaten here dozens of times and always leave happy. I love this place for a fabulous tasty lunch -- pad khee Mao is a very soul-satisfying noodle dish to which I have become addicted, followed by pad kaphrao for an occasional change of pace. I recall having their curries too which are not bad, but I return to the former two dishes, which I would happily eat to the end of time. And the many friends and acquaintances I have dragged here for lunch tell me they feel similarly. And ask me to take them back there when they're in town. Lunch comes with a very good miso soup. All served up by friendly competent servers, Jeep and Laurie. I have enjoyed Thai food -- in larger cities initially (Phila & NYC) -- for over 30 years (yikes!) and think at least the two dishes I settled on here are excellent. Period. I won't even qualify that as excellent "for Albany." Momma's cooking in the back and it's authentic. It helps too to be a regular and Jeep and Laurie know exactly how I want my pad khee mao -- spicy, no green pepper, with mushrooms, tofu and shrimp. Yum! How I crave that dish! They will also give me occasional suggestions to branch out, which I trust. The sushi counter is frankly odd. I have no desire to venture there, even tho I love sushi. I do not believe there is a sushi chef in the house. For that I go to Sushi Tei (or Hana) when in Albany. I suggest you sit down to eat in, talk to the waitstaff about what looks good to you on the menu, what you like -- spicy or not so -- and ask them what dishes they recommend, and have a discussion before ordering. Perhaps by the second meal you may be like me and be embarking on a love affair with the food at Capital Thai. (In their defense, and as a home cook, I think it's unfair to judge them by take out. There are few foods in any cuisine that reasonably can be expected to improve by being put in a box and shlepped around in whatever temps there are for whatever time you take to open them to eat. Mixed reactions to this place. Ordered a Thai tea, tempura, and pad Thai. Thai tea was decent. Came with a cute straw topper. Tempura was not so great I wouldn't recommend it. It was super bland they give you a super sweet sauce to go with I prefer the soy/ savory dipping sauce. When ordering the pad Thai I asked if it came with bell pepper because I'm not a fan she said no I Specifically told her it was because I didn't like them. Well the tempura have two huge piece of bell pepper. Here is where I have mixed feeling about the pad Thai. The taste was great I got beef , their were very little piece but I attribute that to it being lunch time that wasn't the issue. The issue was half of the tin it came in was bean sprouts looks like they only filled it with half noodles and then the other half is completely bean sprouts to the bottom of the tin. I decided to check this place out based on Yelp reviews. Hmmm... For an appetizer I got the meat gyozas which were decent. Be warned though... they serve them with a curry / coconut milk sauce which doesn't really work as a side dipping sauce. For an entree I got the chicken with Capital Thai sauce which is tamarind based. I'm need to preface by saying I do a lot of Asian cooking myself. From experience I know it can be tricky to work with fish sauce and tamarind as they have strong flavors and aromas. Well.... when the dish arrived it smelled shockingly horrible. My initial thought was "...OMG I shouldn't have ordered this!" However having worked with the ingredients myself, I knew to not be dissuaded. As it turned out, the dish was DELICIOUS. The taste did not share the same extremes as the aroma. I just hope other people with less experience with this type of cuisine are not put off easily. The place is clean but those chair covers are awful (see photos). The staff were nice enough but pulled a disappearing act. They were clearly in the back talking loudly amongst themselves but we're basically absent from the dining room. People who came in after me looked around to see no staff, shrugged and seated themselves. Although my entree turned out to be very good, the overall experience is really worthy of only two stars.... Maybe 2.5. I much prefer a different Thai place on the same street way down closer to downtown. read more

Always a delight to dine here!! The food and the service is #1 I love ordering the Gai- Goong Horapa, which is Sauteed shrimp, chicken with hot chili paste, onion, bell pepper and thai basil leaves. Yum!!! so delicious. And I am in love with their sauces/chili sauce! Their chicken satay and peanut sauce is to die for! and the 3 sauces they bring you are also delicious. I am glad it meets my expectations when it comes to spice levels. Alot of places tend to cave in and make their food bland thinking it will attract more bland Americna taste buds. Not this place.They keep true to their Thai cuisine. When you ask for spicy..THEY MAKE IS EXTRA SPICY! And I loove that! The ladies that work there are so kind and friendly! definetly recommend this place. I had an expereince with a beautiful server that felt bad because I prefer fruit drinks without milk. While getting my car serviced at Lia Hyundai my wife and I walked down to grab a bite at Capital Thai. We had been craving our favorite Thai dish (Pad Woon Sen) and the spot we frequented in Latham closed down. Looking at the menu it appeared they didn't have the dish and we were prepared to try something else until we asked our waitress who was extremely nice and helpful and she informed that their Pad Jap Chai was the same as Pad Woon Sen which made our day. We both ordered Seafood Pad Jap Chai spicy level Hot. My wife got a Thai tea and I ordered a Red Plum Nantucket juice. We also ordered veggie spring rolls. The whole meal was AMAZING. I've been here twice now and unfortunately, the second time was even worse than the first so I'm compelled to say something. The first time was with a larger group we'd reserved ahead, and they were unable to feed us in a reasonable period of time. Total overwhelment. The food wasn't that great but I went back today for a second try, just in case I was wrong. I was one of three total people in the place, around 1 pm. I ordered Tom Kha Gai soup (chili-coconut base with chicken). I've had this at Sukhothai a dozen times and it is Divine. So I wanted to compare. I also ordered a single shrimp roll. The waitress brought me Miso soon after, which was probably standard practice but a waste - two soups isn't necessary. The roll and soup came together, which was fine and I ate the roll while the soup cooled. Sadly, it was one of the worst maki I've ever had. The rice was stale - and warm. Ick. The cucumber was odd - too crunchy like it wasn't ready to be eaten and the avocado was similarly crunchy, instead of smooth. The shrimp was bleh and tasteless and lest you say "shrimp IS tasteless"... ichibans shrimp and avocado roll is delicious for some reason. I had hopes for the soup. The broth was a different shade than the others I've had but it smelled wonderful. And yes, it tasted quite delicious too. But one of the fun parts of eating this soup is the goodies in it - and here I had some surprises. The straw mushrooms, chicken and onions were fine (if heavy on onion, light on chicken). There were at least four other items in that soup which were completely inedible. One thing was clearly a bay leave - two or three pieces, unchewable. I fished out all sorts of wierd little curly things that were also inedible. And then big chunks of woody material which, if accidentally bitten, were hot in spice. I'm talking about objects the size of the spoon, not tidbits. I left a big pile of this inedible crud on the napkin, drank the broth and left. Not happy. That pretty much settles it for me, about ever returning to this particular hole in the wall. I would have drowned the thing in soy but they didn't have soy on the tables - she GAVE me a bit of a soy and that was that. I could have asked for more, I suppose but I was annoyed. What really topped it off was that someone in the back - quite possibly the same one preparing food - was hacking and coughing in a really awful way. One can only imagine ... it was pretty unappetizing. read more

I opted for the pad seeuw - the vegetables were fresh and cooked just the right amount but the dish seemed lacking in Favour and light on the sweet soy sauce I have come to love about this dish. Here is the bad stuff just to get it out of the way . . . the location isn't the best (I question whether this place will last without word of mouth), their website is messed up (more on that later), and the inside of the place looks like it's standard Chinese takeout issued (it is larger than I would have thought and pretty clean from the quick glance I took). The Thai food is really great and puts Bangkok Thai to shame. Daniel B - they actually have more than 1 noodle dish and when they serve curry they actually give you rice with it, amazing! We had the Thai shrimp egg rolls, chicken satae, tom ka gai soup, yellow curry and pad knee mao. They all lived up to my expectations. We ordered off the menu on their website, which doesn't seem to be working that great. Plus I didn't see anything on their website about the different prices for lunch and dinner, so the total bill for dinner was a little more than I thought it was going to be. Oh well, even the higher dinner prices are still reasonable. If you're a first timer and have 15-20 minutes to spare for take out or feel like dining in, I would recommend stopping in to look at the menu, much better. I got take out here on my business trip to Albany to bring back to the hotel. I can only speak to their chicken pad thai, but it was extremely unpleasant. The noodles were overcooked and soggy, and the chicken tasted strange. The pad thai also had some funny crunchy aspect to it - perhaps it was a spice that was used, but some ingredient in the dish reminded me of sand. I don't mind its strange location, and its inside seating area actually had a pretty nice ambiance. After my bad experience with the pad thai, I doubt I would ever try something else there or recommend it to a friend. read more

I'm afraid I have to agree with Daniel on this one. Thai is one of my absolute favorite cuisines, and I'm constantly bemoaning the area's lack of good Thai food. I was excited to hear about Capital and read so many good reviews. And I rather liked that it was in kind of funny location because I often find those places have the best food. We got takeout last night , pad thai and green curry. The curry was good, it was filling, but it wasn't great. It was decent, but it could have benefited from more veggies or something that would make it seem a little, I don't know, fresher? Maybe we made a mistake by getting takeout? The pad thai was dry and a little too sweet, and it could have used more bean sprouts. All in all, it certainly wasn't bad. It hit the spot and I had plenty leftover to have for lunch today. Maybe if they gave up on the sushi and concentrated on the Thai, they could do it even better. I don't know, but I'm willing to give it another chance. read more

I went to this place under the insistence of my homesick Thai friend. She was also going back to Thailand that next week and despite this, she still wanted to go to THIS restaurant. It's a little secret hidden by Home Depot, of all places. I must confess, I don't really remember what I ordered the first time, but it was a rice plate, and it came with an egg and some fish sauce. It was good. The second time, I ordered green curry. It had no heat and was terribly bland--someone really dropped the ball on that one and added too much coconut milk. The tom yum was kind of lame. This restaurant actually shines on appetizers more than it does on entrees and soups. You can tell that all ingredients are fresh, but I'm not sure the chef tastes the food before sending it out. The menu isn't purely Thai (it's got some Japanese and Vietnamese thrown in), so the name is a little misleading. They should probably focus their efforts to mastering one cuisine, instead of trying to please everyone. read more

I love Thai food, and I was *really* encouraged by the good reviews I'd read about this place. So while my car was in the shop a few doors down, I figured it'd be a perfect time to try this place out. While the food wasn't bad by any means, it was kind of anemic. The miso soup was watery and kinda tasteless, and so was the ginger dressing that came w/my salad. (However, the salad itself was very fresh.) The pad thai I ordered was decent, but nothing special. Maybe they put their efforts more into the sushi than the Thai food here, but I don't think I'm going to be coming here again. Noi's Sushi and Thai on Central Ave (up the street from Delmonico's,) and Sukhothai on Lark are much, much better and tastier choices than Capital Thai, which is a shame, because I love Thai food, and wish there were more great Thai joints around here. That said, the service at Capital Thai is very good, and the place is very clean. I was on the fence between 4 and 5 stars for Capital Thai. I have had better Thai food in my life, but I would say this is by far the best representation I have tried in Albany. (I've also been to Sukothai and Blue Spice, neither were impressive in the slightest.) I have had the pad thai on a few occasions and the pad khee mao and will say they are the best I've had in this area. Noodle dishes tend to be a comfort food for me and these always hits the spot. Both the thai egg rolls and gyoza are deliciously addictive. A couple weeks ago, I decided to try the sushi and was pleasantly surprised. I was wary of a restaurant that serves both Thai and sushi, but the rolls I got were all really good and I will definitely be hitting them up again. Thus far, I have only gotten takeout, but the waitresses have been very inviting and pleasant while I have waited for my food. I have been told that while they do not have a liquor license, they are more than happy to have you BYOB, which is always a plus in my book. I have yet to be disappointed and will continue to use Capital Thai as my go-to Thai restaurant in Albany. I suggest you do the same! read more

I love Capital Thai, it's the best Thai food in Albany, although I know a lot of Thai places have been popping up recently that I haven't tried yet. Capital Thai has a quaint dining room that is almost never full, but I bet these guys do most of their business on take-out - I know I get a ton of take-out from them! The few times I've sat down in the restaurant it's been a very nice experience. Husband and I had sushi one night and it was terrific. The staff here is so friendly- they are extrememly nice people - oh and they'll make you a Thai iced tea to go - this is important! :-) The curries, fried rices and noodle dishes are scrumptious. I try to always order my food "Thai spicy" but sometimes is still a little mild for my taste. I got the red snapper take-out once and it was dry and not nearly as good as I imagined it would be - the sauces that came with it were top notch though. The fish may be something better for in-house dining. Love love love Capital Thai. Was so happy when I moved back to Albany that I could enjoy my favorite Thai place again - I ate here the first day I moved back to town! read more

One of the best Thai places around. Not gonna give 5 stars because the quality seems inconsistent based on staffing (doubt their kitchen staff change with front of the house staff, but still)... Good Tom Kha/Yum soups, decent Thai noodles and fried rice and very generous portions as well and love the shakes. I go here at least a couple times every month, especially because it is my wife's favorite spot (the irony... she used to hate thai food and I introduced this spot to her and now she can't eat anything else sigh). Def better than Sukothai on Lark. That place stinks like farts and fishsauce. I'm sure that's got to do with being in a basement kinda location but whatevs. Sukothai on Central isn't that bad but I've never gone back since they served spoiled catfish and refused to replace/refund back in 2011. Very authentic Thai food, best in Albany! All the curry's are outstanding. I've been a regular for 4 years and has tried over a dozen different items and I have never been disappointed! Service is always great as well! No liquor license so byo if not try the Thai iced tea it's very refreshing. On a side note, I've never tried their sushi. read more

Not sure what these other reviewers are talking about with this one. This is a dressed up takeout place, serving marginally acceptable Thai food with an added Sushi counter bonus. Food: Their Chicken Pad Thai was poop! I probably won't go back, but my standards are low, so sad. Blue Spice, Bancock Bistro, Sukhothai, or Kinnaree all do it better. It is very similar to Kinnaree in that they are both Thai places with an attentive wait staff, decent atmosphere, serving Thai and Asian food. The menu is typical and reasonably priced. Lunch includes Miso Soup, although it does not mention it on the menu. Started with the Vegetable Gyoza, not impressed. This is certainly the place where I'll be going to get Thai food in Albany. The food is fresh and doesn't appear that they are trying to skimp on things as I have experienced at other casual Asian restaurants lately. I had the papaya salad which was great, but buyer beware it is spicy. Then I had the Fried Tamarind chicken dish in the "dinner" section of the menu. How they make the chicken so crisp and flaky is beyond me, AND excellent. If KFC learned of this chicken they would totally be making bow-koo bucks. read more

I am a Thai food fan so when I was traveling on business in Albany I was looking for a good fit for dinner. I walked in expecting to have sit down service but it was completely empty. The server was very friendly but I felt like they were more of a take-out dinner kind of place. From reading other reviews it sounds like this is very different during lunch. Service: Everyone there was very friendly and pleasantly chatty. The order probably took 5-6 minutes to cook which is pretty amazing since a few others came in to pickup their food so they were working hard back in the kitchen. Food: This is I guess what everyone really cares about but I was not a huge fan of what I ordered. The servings were qute large a other reviews have mentioned. As a starter I got vegetarian gyoza which tasted pretty good but was way too crispy for my taste. Maybe I am just used to Japanese gyoza but these were not exactly what I expected. For the entree I got basic yellow curry chicken. The curry was very bland as yellow curry is expected to be but there really was not much flavor in the vegetables and chicken (pretty dry). Personally I prefer having a lot more chicken in the mix so this was a bit of disappointment especially since I was really hungry. The vegetables were cooked perfectly but there were too many potatoes which also lacked a lot of flavor. Summary: Maybe I just ordered the wrong dishes, but I think I might try another Thai restaurant next time I am in town for dinner. Who knows, maybe lunch is a totally different story. read more

Went to Capital Thai tonight. Good as always. Keep in mind it's the first place I ever ate Thai and the only place I've eaten Thai. Their sushi is good and the Thai is always good. I get the Pad Si iwe. We've been to Capital Thai at least ten times and the food is consistent. Servers are always nice and do a good job. Be forewarned, I've always felt a weird vibe in there.
