My husband and I came here for a lunch on a whim. I got the spring rolls and Drunken Noodles, and he had the Chicken Satay with extra peanut sauce and a side of rice. It was all very good. Yes the food was on the mild side but it had very good flavor. Plus I liked the extra side of hot sauce. We got seated right away, our server was very friendly, and the food came out promptly. Panang is my preferred curry, and Sweet Basil does it so well. The vegis and the tofu, perfectly firm and cooked, and the curry is incredible. Very cute restaurant in front and inside. They have about 6 to 8 tables. Variety food in the menu. Tried their Massaman chicken curry and i love the creaminess of the sauce. The sweetness and creaminess is balanced. Perfect for the side of rice. I will est this again. The Pad thai is good too but too sweet for me. The appetizer we ordered are the fresh rolls. Too bland for me and The dip is not that good. Maybe I am more familiar with the peanut sauce of Vietnamese. The service is good and the server is nice. cute place, it's attached to a house. Service was okay, just one lady serving and running the front end. So it took her time to serve and give the check. Another customer came and they waited about 5 minutes before they got greeted or given water. All the dishes were sweet! Lives up to its' name. Not a fan of sweet Thai food! Panang curry and red curry both tasted the same. When you order a vegetarian dish you have the option of adding veggies or tofu- you don't get both. Will charge extra for the tofu for the veg dish. Both the curries also had potatoe in it. The curries were really creamy, as you can see dish was not enough of the curry. Lacked flavor! Just really sweet despite ordering spicy. I never thought I would EVER have to write a negative review about this establishment, but here it goes: On July 14, I introduced my friend to Sweet Basil. We initially wanted Pho, but we couldn't find a good spot. My friend and I love fresh spring rolls and I knew just the place to go for that. Sweet Basil is what came to mind. I've dined and did takeout orders from Sweet Basil a couple of times and the food and customer service is always good. I even introduced other family and friends to Sweet Basil and they loved their experience there as well, but it's unfortunate that this had to come to an end. On July 14, my friend and I walked into Sweet Basil waiting to be seated. The waiter (a man), who was supposed to seat us was with two other tables, so we seated ourselves. We waited patiently at the table until the waiter (a man) was free to greet us. Unfortunately, the waiter (a man) did not greet us after assisting the other tables. I had to flag him down to ask for a menu and water. Typically, when I visit Sweet Basil, it's always the polite and understanding lady that serves us. Unfortunately, she wasn't in attendance when we visited that day. As the waiter was taking our orders, he presented with such an attitude and annoyance. Certainly not a polite way to treat your customers. My friend was not happy about that social exchange from the waiter. Personally, I brushed it off and gave him the benefit of the doubt that maybe he's just having a bad day. Still, not an excuse to serve your customers in that manner though. Our food finally arrived and it was tasty as usual, however the waiter missed to order certain things we had ordered for our table and we had to remind him. Those missing items finally arrived to our table and we were able to enjoy our food. After enjoying our food, we were ready for the check. At this point, it's just my friend and I at the restaurant. We waited for a long time to receive the check, so I went up to the checkout table and asked our waiter for the check. My friend had already gave me her phone, so I could pay the bill through her apple pay. In such a rude manner, our waiter replied and said no apply pay. I walked back to my friend and mentioned to her that they don't accept apple pay. She had left her bag in the car, so I went to go grab it. She gave me her physical card to pay the bill and I walked back to the checkout table to process the bill. The waiter gave me the receipt and I walked back to my table to wrap the food and such. Do you know that this man (our waiter), stormed to our table and interrupted the conversation my friend and I had at the time and rudely mentioned that we didn't tip? He demanded that we need to tip and that if we didn't want to tip that we should've ordered takeout. At this point, my friend and I are shocked at what we just experienced. He proceeded to show us a bill from a previous customer who tipped. I interrupted him and asked him how did you we weren't going to tip in cash? He was immediately taken back in surprise and said: "Oh, yeah that's ok!" From that point my friend and I were disgusted in how he mistreated, disrespected, harassed and humiliated us as guests. I said to him "just for that, you get's NOTHING". That's no way to treat a customer. Especially a customer who introduces new customers to your establishment. In a polite manner, my friend shared her thoughts to the waiter as well and even taught him a lesson too. Even after the horrible experience, she insisted to still leave him a cash tip because that's what we were planning to do anyways before this encounter. I told her no, that's absolutely not the way to treat a customer, a paying customer at that. To bombard someone's table and demand tip as if, we're obligated to do so is disrespectful on so many levels. I'm not 100% sure if this was a race thing, but it most certainly felt like it. To any future restaurant goer who is interested in trying this restaurant out, I recommend not to spend your hard earned money here. If you're on your last few dollars and want a tasty meal? I recommend to invest your hard earned money elsewhere. A place who actually appreciates your business. And to the waiter who mistreated my friend and I, congratulations, you just lost a loyal customer. My family, friends and I will not be returning to this establishment. Unbelievable! read more

Came here for lunch the other day and absolutely loved it! Authentic Thai food and flavors, not too spicy, but you can ask to make it spicier. The service was fast and the ambiance is cute. It's like a small cozy dining area inside of a house, no like literally-this place is inside of a house turned restaurant. We love sweet basil! I came here last week with a group of 6 people. I called ahead to see if they could accommodate us at 1:00, and she said that would be fine she would have a table for us. I did not realize the place was so small. If we did not call ahead, we might not have been able to eat here. It is not exactly a formal sit down restaurant, there are only 4 tables inside. The girl working the counter was very kind and worked so hard but managed the whole place herself including the take out orders (they do a ton of take out orders!!!) We shared the chicken satay and curry puffs, which were so delicious. The sauces were really tasty and flavorful. For an entree I had massaman curry with shrimp (no spice) and it was AMAZING. It was also a large portion I had some left over to take home. There was a decent amount of large shrimp, and the sauce was full of vegetables. I enjoyed the potatoes that were crinkle cut. The rest of my party had pineapple fried rice, pad Thai, and some salads. Everyone enjoyed their meals, and again, the portions were big for lunch size! I recommend the Thai tea, it was not overly thick or sweet. It was more creamy but had such a great Thai flavor. The only reason for 4 stars is because of the small and casual interior, I think this place would do really well if it was larger and was more of a formal restaurant. It was not a big deal for lunch, but I don't feel like I would come for a sit down formal dinner because of the casual vibe (plus its so small you might not get a table.) This is one of the best Thai food I've had. I'm not from Albany, and it's so hard to find good, authentic food here. Sweet Basil is definitely good and authentic. The restaurant is tiny, but welcoming. I ordered the soup and it was sour and spicy, but tasteful. The Penang curry was soooo good. Be careful of the hidden chilis; they'll bite you if you're not careful, setting your mouth on fire. The noodles in the pad Thai were perfectly cooked, not too hard. It was sweet and had lots of flavor. So pay a visit to Sweet Basil and if you want some really good Thai food. read more

Had an amazing experience here the other night, restaurant was full so we asked to sit outside. There was a monsoon going on out there but the porch was perfect for us to sit and have dinner, there happened to be a music performance next door that enhanced the romantic dinner even more. Food was great as well. Pineapple fried rice had perfect flavors and texture. Drunken noodles had great spice levels and packed a punch to your taste buds that you wanted more. Recently, I've been ordering takeout from Sweet Basil, which has been consistently good. I love their curries and they have a wonderful mango curry (which sometimes I ask them to put salmon on & they always oblige!) Located on Delaware Avenue, this restaurant is in a cute little white house with indoor and outdoor seating right next to an ice cream shop. I'm giving a 5 star review based off only 2 dishes, but both were amazing. Nothing could have been more satisfying on a rainy/cold day than the Tom Yum soup with tofu. We ordered the lunch size, but I probably could have eaten a whole gallon. I also reco,mend the Drunken Noodles with duck. The duck itself was cooked perfectly and really juicy and tender. Sweet Basil came up a few times in conversations with Albany locals, so I was excited to see what the hype was about! From the outside, it's rather unassuming. On the inside, it's small but tables are full, so you know the food must be special! My dining partner and I started with the Sweet Basil fresh roll which is simply rice noodles, carrots, basil and cucumber wrapped in rice paper. The sweet tamarind sauce on the side really kicks it up a notch and was rather addicting. This was a great, light option to begin with. From there, I ordered the mango chicken curry: red curry mixed with coconut milk and prepared with mango, pineapple, green peas, basil, and red pepper. This was definitely some of the best curry I've had! It was the perfect consistency which means a lot thicker than Thai curries I've grown accustomed to. There was plenty of chicken (you can get tofu, pork, beef, shrimp or scallops, as well), so I walked away with leftovers. It wasn't very spicy, so I'd maybe ask for that to be amped up next time. Even though it was a Sunday evening, it was hopping, so I would recommend getting a reservation to be safe. Service was friendly enough and the food came out pretty fast. All in all, I can see why this is a neighborhood staple. I wouldn't hesitate to come back for dinner or get takeout if I was nearby! read more

Amaaaaaaazing dinner. From the Thai iced tea to the pirogies to the HUGE entree portions, everything was delicious, fresh, and filling. The red curry sauce was absolutely dreamy- super creamy with just a little bit of heat at the end. I really think I'll dream of this curry for a long time to come. We also tried the drunken noodles, delicious. And the pineapple fried rice which was my husbands favorite! We had the vegetarian version of every dish, all were packed full of different types of fresh veg and tons of tofu. Prices are super reasonable in my opinion for all you get! Pickup only review: The staff there were friendly and nice. I've ordered on the phone on two separate occasions. They pick up and order right away so the service is nice. I always like to give places two or three tries before making a review just in case that day was an off day or the thing I ordered isn't their specialty. First time I ordered a Tofu Massaman Curry. It was more brothy than a curry. It tasted more like fish sauce and Tom yum soup. Second time I ordered a Chicken Pad Thai, and a Chicken Satay. The Pad Thai was very bland. The Chicken Satay felt like biting into a piece of soft rubber that tasted of nothing. The peanut sauce that came along with it was good as it masked chicken. read more

My boyfriend and I were traveling Albany and stumbled upon this through yelp. Its a small resturaunt (the inside is as small as a living room!). The inside is cute and cozy. We tried 3 menu items: Pad Thai with pork, papaya salad, and tom yum. Papaya salad - (2/5) I was not a fan of this but it may just be because of personal preference. It had a sweet tamarind flavor to the salad and it was unlike any papaya salad I've had in the past. Tom Yum - (3.5/5) This was pretty good and had a decent amount of shrimp. Note: its a smaller bowl of soup rather than those large pots that they have at other resturaunts. Pad thai- (4/5) I would definitely recommend this. It was a solid bowl of pad Thai. Went here on a Friday night without reservations (definitely a mistake!) but was lucky enough to score a table. I started with wonton soup, which was delicious and full of shrimp wontons. I ordered the shrimp pad Thai and the portion was huge, filling and tasty. It came with about 5 or 6 medium sized shrimp, which tasted really fresh. The service was really friendly and I enjoyed the small, cozy atmosphere. I highly suggest making reservations since there are about 8 tables or so. Definitely a great spot for Thai food! read more

I've tried this place a couple of times trying to figure out my feelings about it, and I think that it's just not the right Thai restaurant for me. The reason is in the name: all of the food I've had here has been very mild and sweet. I know that a lot of people love that, but my preferences for Thai food lean more toward the spicy/pungent/funky side of the cuisine with some sweetness for balance, and here the scales are tipped too far toward the sweet for me. Even my pad kee mao was more sweet than it was spicy or ... basil-y, to the point that I briefly wondered whether we might have received the wrong dish. Also, the noodles in the dish were very soft and had fallen to pieces a bit, when I was hoping for a bit more to chew on. The food isn't BAD, and the pleasant ambience (love that porch!)/lovely service makes this a nice place to go for a meal out, but if you're craving really big Thai flavors this wouldn't be my first recommendation. read more

I have been frequenting this place for years. It is a simple concept. They have a handful of curries and you add the protein. I like the seafood mix and the yellow curry, but I have tried them all over the years. Duck here is fairly good as well. Sometimes it is hard to get very crispy duck in Albany, and these guys do a good job. The dishes are cooked to order, though I would assume the curries just await, and there are plenty of appetizers that keep you busy, shout-out to the crab rangoons. The service on the slower side, and this has to do with it being a small family place, with a small staff. They are always pleasant, but I would recommend a reservation as the place is small, and tables get snapped up quickly. There are various noodle dishes that use the same 5-6 proteins and tofu. The noodle dishes are good, but I come for the curry. For first timers I recommend the green or mango with seafood. read more

Came here last night with friends that recommended Sweet Basil. Easy enough to find but parking can be challenging. Also, it's TINY! 7 or 8 tables total. But, we got right in and had a chance to catch up with our buddies. There happened to be a lot of take out orders, so it was exceptionally busy with all of the tables full...and people standing in the single aisle to pick up their food. Also, there were a couple of screaming babies there last night, which my friends said was unusual....but they eventually settled down. FYI - no alcohol and if you want to bring your own - you can't. (Someone at an adjacent table tried to enjoy a bottle of wine with dinner but were promptly told that they couldn't...no liquor license here). But come here for the food. I read about the mango curry when I heard that we were going here for dinner...and that's what I ordered. Delicious, generous portion of curry with a heaping side of rice. I also tasted the drunken noodles....it was divine (but I would have liked both the curry and noodle dish a bit spicier....but that was my fault for not ordering it up a couple of notches...). Noodles were not as broad as I've had at other places (or in Thailand) and they were gummy in consistency (which is a preference of mine). Appetizer was the fresh roll - beautifully prepared; perfectly crisp and refreshing. My friends had a crispy chicken app that looked delicious...drizzled with some kind of a mayo-based sauce along with pineapple fried rice and spicy chicken/basil. Happy campers all around. Due to how busy it was last night (so much take-out!!), our food took a rather long time. They apologized for the delays...but since we were hanging with some of our favorite peeps, it just gave us more time for good conversation and some extra laughs.
