Love Thai food and had been meaning to try Chontong for a bit now. A COVID diagnosis and subsequent isolation protocol in the house provided a great mid-week excuse for take out. Ordered the spring rolls, Pad Thai with Chicken and Drunken Noodles with Salmon. Service was prompt. The dining room was clean and inviting for those looking to eat in. Our takeout order was ready for pickup as estimated and the folks at Chontong were very nice. The spring rolls with dipping sauce were good. The Drunken Noodles with Salmon was fine but not special in any way. The big disappointment was the Pad Thai. It was inedible as it had a weird off-taste throughout. As much as we love Thai and love to support a local business, can't see ordering again from a Thai restaurant that cannot make a decent Pad Thai. read more

Wow, just read some savage reviews for this place. My taste honestly isn't pedestrian and I have liked this place: granted, we've only ordered delivery. My wife had a hunger for pho, and unfortunately this area doesn't have Vietnamese restaurants. This restaurant does have pho, and for take out they did it pretty well. I ordered Thai the two times I've ordered from here; the food was average to good both times. The spring rolls we ordered were actually superb. Thin and well fried but not greasy and very flavorful. I thought they were excellent if you are seeking comfort food. The delivery (both times we ordered) was early. I'm impressed. While I have another go to place for Thai food, if also wanting to get Pho for my wife I've found this quite respectable. And, I thought the pricing was quite fair. read more

This place is amazing. The outside is underwhelming but the food is incredible and the inside is clean and spacious. Ive had thai in about 25 different states and the food quality, portions and friendliness of this staff here is a top 3 overall for me. We were not expecting it to be so good. After having dinner here on a friday we scrapped our sat dinner plans and came back the next night. Spice is perfect and they will adjust to your taste as you like. I ordered dinner to go, chicken green curry and beef pineapple curry, worth $13 and $14. I came home to feed a family of 5. The freaking food they gave are few pieces of meat in a quart container like a soup but I didn't order soup!!!! The beef is hard very cheap quality of beef that I end up throwing it in the garbage because you can't chew it! I called them and complain about it, the lady said " I don't know how many pieces of beef or chicken there is" and she just said sorry in a very rude manner that they can't do anything about it! This restaurant is crooked charged you for the meal but it's all misrepresentation of the food! I am Asian and I can cook curry foods so I know how it looks like! There are so many Thai restaurants in the greater capital region, it's fun to shop around and compare styles, execution and heat level. Last night I was very pleasantly surprised by the offerings at Chontong. The fresh roll was enormous, herbaceous, and full of harmonious textures. You can get yours with shrimp or tofu, and hold the egg if that's your jam. The fried spring rolls were also delicious. Both my dining buddy and I are picky in our own ways, but the staff were eager and able to please. I got a spicy eggplant stir fry with loads of delicious veggies in a soy based sauce with fresh chilis, on account of their chili paste containing seafood. The dish was not too oily, which is hard to pull off with eggplant, but was lacking in heat. If you like your Thai on the spicier side, make sure you tell them. My companion special ordered ground chicken in her stir fry dish, which she very much enjoyed. Also of note: they have pho! We saw multiple gigantic steaming bowls coming out of the kitchen! Maybe next time. In all, I have to deduct a star for the lack of a liquor license. They also won't let you BYOB. Hopefully they'll get on that soon! read more

I had never had Thai food until I walked in here the other night. I was pleasantly surprised that I loved the food!! This restaurant is in a nice location right off of Delaware Ave in a little strip mall and it has a great atmosphere. We walked in an hour before closing which we didn't realize but the woman that greeted us was wonderful. She took great care of us and was patient with us as it was my first time eating Thai and my cousin had some allergy concerns. We ordered veggie spring rolls, pineapple fried rice w/ chicken, drunken noodles, Thai iced coffee, and ice cream! Everything was fantastic and I couldn't stop eating despite being so full. The portions are huge and I've eaten it for leftovers a couple times now. I will be back here and I can't wait to try more!! read more

Food was okay, definitely a lot better Thai restaurants around the area. Drunken noodles was heavy on the ginger taste. Pad see ew was bland and did not have much flavor. Broccoli in the dishes seemed to just be steamed and thrown on the top. Not sure if that is typical or if the broccoli was missed when making the stir fry noodles. This was take out, and garnished were included in the to go containers which was odd as first couple bites was citrus flavored from the oranges and strings of raw carrots. read more

We came here tonight expecting to eat at the restaurant formerly occupying this space, which we'd never been to, but instead learned that it just recently closed. (Sorry folks... Delmar Thai Sushi Restaurant is among the departed.) According to our waitress, Chontong opened on October 6, and although it is a Thai restaurant like it's predecessor, the two restaurants are unrelated and Chontong does not offer sushi. Their grand opening special takes 10% off all orders until Jan 6, 2016. Good to know. The husband and I had skipped lunch, so we went all out with two appetizers, entrees, and dessert. We opted for some of our favorite Thai dishes for the sake of comparison, and were not disappointed. The chicken satay (pic) and Thai egg roll (pic) appetizers were both very good, and were portioned right for appetizers (meaning: small). My pineapple curry chicken (pic) was the perfect level of spice for my liking (mediumish). The flavor was great, and the dish included a good portion of meat. The husband's pineapple fried rice w. beef (pic) was also very good and not too oily like some places serve it. The mango sticky rice (pic) was tasty as well, but I've had better. Service was very friendly and attentive without being pushy or overbearing. Business on Saturday night was steady but not too busy, which is generally my preference. No wait, no overcrowded dining room, and no shouting at your dinner companions. (It was busier than my dining room pictures would lead you to believe - I was deliberate in taking shots between table seatings.) They seem to do a fair amount of takeout business, and there was no evidence of their delivery service (such as staff cutting through the dining room carrying bags of food), so they must do that out the back door. All in all, this isn't the very best Thai food I've had in the cap region, but it was certainly respectable, and I think we'll come back to try some other items on the menu. read more

I really enjoyed my experience here. We were the only people in the restaurant which gave us excellent service. the waitress was attentive, and helpful. The water was also really delicious with a light lemon flavor. We got the homemade dumplings, which were absolutely delicious, but nothing out of the ordinary. They were great, but I don't think that I've ever had really stand out dumplings. I got the Suki Hang (spice) which was absolutely delicious. It had tons of bean sprouts, and was full of flavor and vegetables. For 12 dollars the portion was huge. I was only able to eat about 1/2 and saved the rest for the next day. My boyfriend got some fish dish and while he enjoyed it, we realized that the crab was imitation which was a little weird. It had so many other sea creatures on it, they could have just left that out. Honestly, while I really liked it here and would absolutely go back. I do wish there were more authentic Thai dishes, as well as having Thai seasonings on the table to add to the dishes. It's excellent Americanized Thai which is probably what the masses want anyway. read more

I can easily say that this is THE beat thai place I have eaten at. Their service is so friendly and the chefs accommodating. The quality of the food is very high and the atmosphere is calming. Was told that for ordering an entree they could either remove the seafood sauce or the eggs, but not both. So here it is mandatory when ordering an entree to eat either fish sauce or eggs. Ate here tonight. Ordered the Tom Yum chicken soup and Vegetable Pho. I've no idea what either are "supposed to" taste like because I've never had them before, but I thoroughly enjoyed both dishes! The pho came as a kit with the broth and vegetables in one container, sprouts and seasoning sauces in a second and glass noodles in a 3rd. I mixed everything together in one large bowl and had a happy tummy! Next time I'll play with how much seasoning I put in to see how I like the variation. The Tom Yum may become a goto of mine since its just right for lunch or a cold and only $5! Can't wait to try all the other items on their menu! read more

We went there on a Wednesday, I did make reservations though just in case It got busy, This place had great reviews, but I was kind of skeptical because we were really the only ones there. We had a waitress she was so very nice, we had a bunch of appetizers and we each got the pineapple curry bowl and others got Pho. I do like that they put a slight hint of lemon in their water, at first I wasn't sure but it was refreshing as it was a very hot day. Let me tell you, we had a Rangoon's potstickers chicken satay and spring rolls for the apps, it was absolutely delicious! They were fried just enough to give a delicate crunch. The place was very clean. Everyone in our party loved their food. And when we left it was dark and we parked right in front of the place. The picture window in the front was absolutely spotless and it just looks so pretty from the parking lot I was actually kind of surprised nobody else was there, maybe because it was a Wednesday night. But I will definitely be going there again. I thought the prices were very reasonable for what you got. Very very good food. When looking at reviews I tend to look at the worst ones first and honestly I'm not understanding, because the girl we had waiting on us was an absolute doll very accommodating, and the food was delicious. Might I add that I don't like to eat out very much because most of the time I'm not satisfied. It doesn't make a difference if it's a pricey restaurant or a little dive, food should be good when you go out and most times it's not. I think most people have bland palettes and then they rave about bland food. So I did appreciate that I had a nice meal. Staff was great the server sat us down and promptly brought us water which was yummy there is some kind of citrus in the water, a very nice touch! I got the pad Thai... mmmm mhmmmm was it good!! I'm behind the curve here - this has been the replacement for (the lamented) Delmar Thai & Sushi since October. Friendly staff person - the only human in a completely deserted restaurant - and food was ready on time; they even gave us the 'opening discount' which is in play until Jan 6. There's nothing offensive about the food - but it's a significant step down from its predecessor, to the point where we'll make the extra drive and go to Sweet Basil instead. Pad Thai was very low on peanut, low on flavour. Pad kee mao had the tofu decently crisped, but again very very bland - I understand americanising Thai, but this was well past the point of taste loss. The crispy duck was overcooked and swimming in a watery sauce - in fact as I write this it sounds more of a 1* review, but the musman curry was acceptable, if highly generic and (again) overcooked chicken, and the spring rolls were fine. "Meh" is a good summary; I don't honestly expect the place to last. read more

I tried the home made dumplings and the garlic beef. The dumplings were a nice starter. They tasted fresh and the meatball was not mushy or too firm. Delicious. The chicken satay was amazing. It was flavorful and tender. The chili chicken was basically a hot basil chicken sans basil. It was delicious and the portion was perfectly sized. My only issue with the meal was the tiny sized rice portion that comes with the stir fry dishes. Overall I cant wait to go back for more. Staff is super friendly and genuinely happy that you are a patron . My bill was discounted 10% as part of their grand opening promotion but I just added that value back to the tip. I'd give this place a 4.5, but I'm not allowed. The Tom Yum Gai was perfectly balanced, though a bit shy on spice for something labeled 'spicy' on the menu. It's a minor complaint, really, since the kitchen can adjust the spice level if you ask--it was my my first time here, however, and I wanted to gauge the kitchen. The Fresh Rolls lived up to their name, and the presentation was gorgeous, but with the wrapper not covering the bottom it made for a slightly messy eating experience. The Drunken Noodles, however...wow! Each vegetable was cooked perfectly, still had a bit of crunch and each maintained their own flavor in the sauce--which was perfectly spiced--so that each bite unveiled a new amalgamation of flavors! I live in Seattle and it seems that we share restaurants with the same name. I unknowingly placed an order with the Delmar restaurant thinking it was the restaurant in Seattle. After arriving at my local restaurant, realizing what had happened, I called the Delmar location to explain. The woman on the phone graciously said she would cancel my order and credit my card.
