We recently saw PLA2 pop up in Guilderland, and I was excited to try some Thai food near home. We tried to call in our order several times, and after calling multiple times over the course of at least 30 minutes, and getting sent to voicemail, we finally were able to place an order. We were told when we went to pick up, that the phone line is on the same line as the credit card machine, which is why the calls kept going right to voicemail. I love a good Thai curry, and went for the Red Curry with Tofu ("Thai curry prepared with green beans, zucchini, red & green peppers, peas and basil in red curry coconut milk sauce. Spicy.") We ordered for dinner, and my meal was $14 and came with a scoop of rice. I was a bit unimpressed with the sauce, which seemed a little watery, and I would definitely describe it as watered down. I think it would have been much more flavorful if it was thicker or more concentrated. The menu also says this dish is spicy, but I only detected a little bit of heat to it. Normally I find myself needing rice to go with curry, but this was not the case. There was some fried eggplant in the curry, which was fantastic, but the green beans seemed undercooked and overall, I was underwhelmed. (I get some very flavorful and delicious Thai Red Curry with tofu for almost half the price at the Chinese place up the road, so I was disappointed with both the food and the portion). My husband ordered the Pad See Ew, a Thai standard that he has enjoyed many times over the years at different establishments. We both tried this and agreed that like my dish, this was also a bit bland. The menu has a lot of choices on it, and I hope that the issues we had were simply an issue of this restaurant getting their bearings, but I don't see us ordering in the near future. read more

Easily 4-4.5. Very new, clean. Interesting menu. I had tofu satay with coconut marinated and peanut dipp - pretty yummy. Then lemongrass tofu, medium spicy. Beautiful fresh dish, great heat. I eat a lot of Thai and rarely see lemongrass as a dish. The rice was long grain and fragrant. AAnd free soup or salad! Will definitely come back. Second visit: still a solid four stars with Tofu drunken noodles, attentive service. read more

I love Thai food, so I couldn't wait to try PLA2 on Western Ave. Three of us went Tuesday night and there was one other couple there. It is a small place without much ambiance but I think that could be because it is new. We were met rIght away by our server and brought large goblets of cold water. We started our meal with 3 appetizers; spring rolls, shrimp rolls, and edamame. We liked them all but the favorite was absolutely the shrimp rolls! Served hot and crisp, with one large shrimp and glass noodles inside served with plum sauce....Yum!! We actually a started with just ordering the shrimp rolls and edamame and they were so good we ordered the spring rolls, which were good as well, filled with veggies and glass noodles. For dinner I had the Thai suki noodle dish with shrimp. It is a spicy dish but I asked for it mild. I liked it, but I think making it mild took away a lot of the flavor. Next time I would order as is. The veggies in dish were cooked perfectly and there were a lot of shrimp! My companions had the Chili fried rice with chicken and the Spicy basil stir fry. They loved both. Servings were plentiful and we brought home leftovers. They give the option of jasmine rice or noodles, or for an extra charge brown rice. The place doesn't look like much and is located in a plaza but we thoroughly enjoyed our meals and plan to visit again to try other dishes. Give them a shot, I don't think you wIll be disappointed. I ordered takeout the other day and pla2 thai is my new favorite restaurant in town. When picking up the food the restaurant appeared so clean. The man behind the counter was very nice and told us that sodas were included with each meal. I ordered the green curry. It was so delicious and I even had plenty of leftovers. My boyfriend had chicken pad thai. He was nervous since this was his first time ordering thai food but he loved it and he even enjoyed tasting my green curry. I have no doubt that I will be ordering again soon! read more

Until a few months ago, this tiny, bright location used to house my favorite Albany-area sushi bar (Akanomi - still open, just moved a few doors over), but as of this week it's now Pla 2 Thai. I ordered to go, and got my two standard 'new-restaurant test dishes': Tom Kha Gai, coconut milk soup with chicken, and Pad Thai noodles with pork, probably the best-known Thai noodle dish - as well as a couple of outlier items: their version of Samosas, and Mango Sticky Rice, a classic-but-not-very-common Thai dessert. The portions were generous, the prices reasonable, and they're not using those notoriously leaky styrofoam takeout containers, but nice, tightly-lidded recyclable plastic tubs and trays. The menu is pretty extensive for such a little joint, and is organized by categories (Soups, Curries, Entrees etc.) which let you choose which way you want the dish prepared and which main ingredient you'd like featured (Chicken, Vegetable, Tofu, Pork, Beef, Shrimp, Duck, Scallops, Seafood Combo - quite a range!), as well as over a dozen 'House Specials' besides. (I'd have posted pictures of the menu, but I scribbled notes all over it...) Entrées are served with your choice of Jasmine white rice or rice noodles, or substitute brown rice for an extra dollar. Here's the rundown of what I had: The Samosas: 5 to an order, these are not the big, crusty handfuls you might be used to from Indian restaurants, but their smaller, daintier filo-wrapped cousins. Instead of chunks of potato, peas, and fairly assertive spices, the filling is more like mashed potatoes with some mild curry powder, but even after a 1/2 hour trip getting home they were still hot, crisp, tasty - and went down easily. The Soup: lots of sliced white meat chicken plus mushrooms and onions, but more on the sweet than tangy side - could have used a squeeze of lime juice - and no galangal (or failing that, ginger) at all - so it was filling and tasted good but not as complex and interesting to eat as it could be. Didn't stop me from finishing it, though! The Pad Thai: again, plenty of sliced pork and perfectly-cooked rice noodles (tender, not glued together) with nicely contrasting textures and flavors from bean sprouts, nuggets of scrambled egg, and crunchy chopped peanuts, but again, a sweeter-than-average flavor profile. The Mango Sticky Rice: I'd say this was my favorite: a tender little brick of warm, very sticky short-grain white rice (which I'd say was cooked using coconut milk), paired with cool slices of half a fresh, perfectly ripe mango, all sauced with a little more coconut milk so everything plays nicely together. This was pretty much perfect, and if they can keep coming up with ripe fresh mangoes, I'll keep ordering it. I'll definitely be back - there's a at least half a dozen things I'm curious to try, especially some of the duck dishes, other appetizers, and a couple soups. Don't know what they may develop into, but at the moment (that is, two days after opening), it's actually a good starter place for people who are curious about Thai food but don't want to worry about dealing with very spicy foods or 'mysterious' ingredients; could also be a good place to get even your younger kids on board. read more

A small restaurant that is in a plaza with our favorite Chinese restaurant and a Japanese restaurant. I decided to try them out after seeing a recommendation on the Next Door app. So I ordered a pumpkin curry dinner with rice noodles and som tum papaya salad. Everything was ready when I went to pick it up and Yelp notified me that my order was ready. Very flavorful, fresh and satisfying. I want to try more of the yummy Thai dishes on the menu. Does not taste like anything thai. Everything is bland. Feels like already cooked veggies and precooked protein were added to different dishes. We ordered panang curry which was not spicy, drunken noodle is the same, tomyum soup was sweet felt like it had some kinda hot and sweet ketchup added to it. Totally disappointing. read more

My husband loves Thai food. I have never tried it before today. We had several appetizers (calamari, dumplings, chicken satay), wonton soup, pad thai and lemon chicken. It was all wonderful. Got take out when this place first opened and was so disappointed in the pad Thai that I hadn't gone back. Tonight our regular Thai place was closed so gave it another try. So the pad Thai is still too sweet and not peanuty enough but there was plenty of soft tofu which I like. The real star here is my partner's crispy duck. That was amazing as was the Tom Yum soup. Tons of crispy duck, delicious sauce, plenty of veg. Thankfully he didn't finish and I get the leftovers. The take away for me is to go again. Just not for pad Thai. read more

3.5 stars Decent but on the bland side but still tasty. Good portion size with ample meat/scallops. Fresh basil rolls and right out of the frier fried spring rolls. Clean modest place with no frills. Good location for the Guliderland area. Would go there again. read more

Food: pad Thai and mango curry not great. Noodles were all stuck together and not soft. Only thing good was the sauce to the dumplings.

Update: restaurant contacted to say the menu was wrong. I understand not everything goes smooth opening a new restaurant so I'll give them another chance and try again. read more

Excited that this restaurant popped up in Guilderland. Food is excellent. We have gotten take out twice and it was consistently good. We have gotten the calamari, potstickers, samosas, drunken noodles and pad Thai. Each dish was flavorful and we will definitely be ordering again. read more

Very good food. Everything is fresh, and the menu is pretty extensive. Service is always friendly and accommodating. I would just suggest some additional spices in the sauces. I'm not a fan of hot and spicy, but some of the dishes could use a bit more pop. Overall, though, the food is fresh and tasty. This is a great addition to Guilderland's restaurant scene. read more

The two curry dishes, which were both very watery and bland, with some vegetables and shrimp over cooked and some barely cooked were very disappointing and most was thrown away. The traditional Pad Thai dish was eatable, but completely tasteless. We'd been excited to try a more local Thai option, but will go back to our dependable standbys a few more miles away. read more
