*** Vegetarian Review *** Thai food is my jam. I love all Thai noodle dishes. Curries are a favorite. So how do you make it better? Red88 figured it out ... offer vegetarian meat as an option so instead of just ordering "with tofu" I can order "with vegetarian chicken or vegetarian beef." Would I Come Back Test? Yes. The food was hot and fresh plus the staff is super nice and welcoming. Plus I saw one of those prize wheels and who doesn't love a prize wheel? Tips for first-timers: 1. Free street parking - 3 hours at least. After 6pm, no limits. Because of Covid, they have blocked the entire street for outdoor seating so just park close and walk. 2. Their online ordering is super easy. One of the best Apps. You can even make it vegan or vegetarian with a click of a single button. 3. Can't decide between vegetarian grilled chicken or vegetarian ground beef? Go with the faux grilled chicken. You'll be hard-pressed to tell the difference. 4. There is a $2 add-on for vegetarian chicken or beef. 5. Most dishes come with a side of white rice or you can upgrade to brown rice, garlic rice, or brown garlic rice. Just check the menu. Comparison: If you like the curries at Bangkok @12 or Coconut on T (both in Sacramento), you'll enjoy their curry. You can even purchase a sauce to go if you want to make it yourself at home. Remember, if it's a phone order, make sure to request no fish sauce or vegetarian or you can even request full vegan. If an online order, just click the option you want. Yellow Curry ($14, Grade A): Choose your protein -- I recommend the fried tofu for added texture. Coconut milk, yellow curry with potatoes and carrots. This is their signature curry and for good reason. The curry was flavorful and I was glad I ordered it medium. Made everything pop even more. The only thing I would change is the to go container ... the curry sauce spilled into the rice compartment so a lot of the sauce was already soaked up. With that said, hey, one container is better for the environment, right? And we still finished the entire dish so that's a win for polar bears around the world. Garlic Mushroom Lover ($11.75 + $2, Grade B): You can order this with any protein, but we selected the vegetarian ground beef. It's a stir fry with garlic and mushrooms. They don't skimp on either garlic or mushroom and would be good on its own without the fake meat. The vegetarian ground beef was probably Impossible or Beyond -- hard to tell. Pad Thai ($12.75 + $2, Grade A): Choose your protein, but I saw this on their Instagram page and ordered it that same night. The grilled vegetarian chicken is probably Gardein, but grilling it really brings out that unique flavor. Pad Thai is the chow mein of Thai. Wok-seared Bangkok style thin rice noodles with egg, beansprouts, and chives. The noodles were perfectly sticky and it was super savory. Bottom line: Super friendly staff, easy online ordering, and fresh, hot, and flavorful food. They have vegetarian options available for all their dishes so this is a great place for carnivores and vegetarians/vegans to get together to break bread or spring rolls. Absolutely favorite place to get slammed at in college. This place is where half of my best memories have been forgotten. The FML is absolutely disgusting, just how I remembered it after the original trinity, it's so nasty it gives me PTSD even after graduation... 5/5 The new trinity is garbage in comparison to the first one cuz it tastes too good. But at least this Time you can just get slammed in one place instead of walking. I guess that's a little easier. It's still nasty, 5/5 The tables are always kind of greasy, idk if it's the pulled pork fries, or the damn fact that people keep yacking on the tables 5/5 I'll never forget the bathroom, the line is always so damn long cuz there's always a person passed out on the toilet. In the last 5 months I brought guests take-out from here four times and dined in three times. I love this place. The Ka-ree soup got me through the pandemic and various bouts of flu. The Miso-Mushroom pasta has pleased my most finicky eater and the Basil Fried Rice with Fish is amazing! Another friend with a difficult to please palate ordered the chicken sandwich and didn't even bother to put it back down on the plate between bites. I have had dozens of meals from Red 88 and only one time was the soup a bit salty. Every other time all dishes have been perfectly seasoned and delicious. The noodles are truly outstanding! The food is served hot and timely and is definitely affordable with good portions. The people are always friendly and patient, shout out to AT! Even though a college vibe is present, as an older person, I've always felt welcome and every time I asked if the music could be turned down a notch, it was done immediately and with good attitudes. Great place for drinks with friends at the end of the week! They have pitchers of drinks which are great for sharing for friends (or by yourself if you're brave). My favorite thing about this place is 100% the drunken pig fries, they have carnitas, cheese, bacon, salsa verde and the most important part is I request criss-cut fries. They are the perfect fry for this situation because they can fit some of every topping/sauce and they don't get soggy too fast. (Even soggy I'd inhale them) Even though this is a heavy meal the green salsa adds the perfect touch of freshness. The birria fries are good as well, but I'd prefer the birria with consomé in a taco. I came with a few friends to celebrate the end of a very long week, and I was really happy with the service we got. Our food and drinks came out very fast and the outdoor seating was so nice with all of the lights, especially on a hot summer night in Davis! If you're looking for a place to dance, this is not the bar for you. This is more of a place to grab a small bite and drink casually to catch up with a few friends. The music, however, is great and adds to the entire vibe of the place. The chicken tenders were just your regular chicken tenders, but the mac and cheese was SO good. The seasoning and the cheesiness was perfect and meshed well with the mint mojito pitcher we all got to share. I also tried the AMF and it was definitely one of those drinks that creep up on you so be careful!! Other than that, I will definitely be coming back here!! There wasn't anything special about the dish, it didn't have many memorable flavors. Not bad but not great. Some of the beans also tasted sort of raw? We also ordered the drunken pig fries which were not bad, I would give it a 7/10. Also wasn't anything special, I feel like it could've been elevated a lot more too if it had a special sauce or seasoning on the meat. I came here a couple of times already but recently came for my 22nd birthday! My birthday was on a Sunday, so the place closes at 10:30pm then. Usually, I go late at night, and they ask for your ID so that they can give you a wristband to indicate that you are at least 21 years old. When we went late at night, you could only order drinks at the bar, and food had to be ordered on their website. On Sunday (on my birthday), when we went, there was no wristbands, so we just ordered a pitcher and some food at the bar itself. They obviously still card you, but again, there were no wristbands. If it's your birthday, you should def stop by! They let you spin a wheel for a free drink (or right now, COVID kit). Whatever you land on is what you get for free. They ring a bell as you spin, and it's so much fun! I ended up getting an FML from this spinning wheel experience. As for food, we got the birria fries, drunken pig fries, pad thai, and the birria ramen. After drinking the FML, I was a little disoriented, so some of my food photos ended up really blurry... As he was spinning the wheel, the waiter rang a bell and "woo-ed" lol. We sat down for the drinks and I decided to order something to nibble on. Went with the chicken chow mein. It looked and smelled amazing, especially with the cilantro topping. It had great flavor, however, the chicken was dry. Used to be good before covid. Now they give you smaller portions in plastic containers for dine in. No refills on the coffee/tea and they don't check up on you. They need to lower prices if they're not going to serve food the way they did precovid with full service and portions. edit: it is Thai tea. I use to live red 88, especially their vegan ka-ree soup but the past few visits have been awful. They've brought me nonvegan chicken soup when it was specified for it to be "vegan" . The first time it happened, the manager came out and personally apologized for the mistake, saying that they had just hired a new cook/ kitchen worker and assured me that they take dietary restrictions very seriously. But for it to happen a second time when it was made clear TWICE that the order is vegan is disheartening. I don't feel safe to eat anything at red88 anymore. The food is good but the attention to detail is lacking. I hope the manager sees this review and make more of an effort to keep his word so that others don't fall ill from carelessness. read more
