I recently slapped together some old parts and built a bike that had a few bugs to work out. The first shop i took it to told me that my front derailer was broken and that i should take the bike to Recycled cycles. So i did. Billy one of many mechanics there was able tune my derailer and work out all the other bugs while i waited. They were very busy but seemed to be able to help the customers pretty quickly. read more

They have a decent selection of bikes and the attendants are generally very nice. The first time I went in, I was looking for a good quality used bike. Despite their name, most of their bikes are brand new and somewhat pricey. Anyways, after buying a bike from craigslist, I came in to buy some accessories. While their used bike selection is very limited, they do have a wide array of used bike parts for sale. Everything you can think of is available and they are all dirt cheap. If you had the time and skill, you could probably build a pretty decent bike from their used parts selection for under $500. I would give them 5 stars but I did have the unpleasant experience of dealing with a snobby mechanic. The guy was knowledgeable and did a good job servicing my bike but he kept insinuating that my bike was subpar and that I needed upgrades. They were valid recommendations but none of them were necessary. I suppose that after seeing my road bike, he assumed I was a competitive racer. Still, you don't deride your customer's bike and expect them to ask for an upgrade. After I told him that I only use my bike to commute and don't need the high end parts he was recommending, he shrugged me off. I suppose no bike shop is perfect. read more

I was pleasantly surprised. Even with high unemployment customer service seems lacking at most places but not here. I was expecting to be ignored and/or spoken to in a condescending manner. The employees all look like they ride fixies and wear pork pie hats in there off time. I didn't expect a couple of squares to be a priority. We were greeted promptly and they listened to what I was looking for in a bike. They showed us a few bikes that weren't quite right then took our number and said they would search for something. I wasn't really expecting a call but they called about 6 hours later and said they had something. We went back down and the bike was a good fit. We traded in an old bike and got the new one without any high pressure sales tactics to get a bunch of accessories. If I decide to trade this bike in I'll come back. read more

Recycled Cycles in the University District is all around the best bike shop I have been too, especially with regards to customer service and knowledge. I came in to the shop about a year and a half ago after being hit by a car on my bike and needed an estimate of damages for an insurance claim. Recycled Cycles provided me with a fair estimate in a few days and provided this estimate at no charge. Unfortunately, my bike was no longer safe to ride, but Recycled Cycles' estimate helped me get reimbursed for a good replacement bike. I also shopped for my new bike here. The sales representative was not pushy at all and even told me that I should look at other places and make sure that I liked a bike before buying it and didn't expect me to buy something right then and there. He was very patient and helped me try out many bikes within my price range. Although in the end I did not find a bike that I liked at Recycled Cycles, but I figured out what style of bike I liked best. I have noticed Recycled Cycle's consistent exceptional customer service, knowledge, and generosity after having been here many times for various reasons and will keep coming back. For example, I had squealing brakes on my new bike. I had been to 2 other bike repair shops previously about my brakes but none of them could stop the squealing properly. Recycled Cycles adjusted my brakes and the brakes stopped squealing immediately and they did this adjustment for free. They have also gladly looked at my bike when I have taken spills to see if anything got out of adjustment. For any bike products that I have come in to the store looking for like lights, helmets, and rain booties, someone has always immediately come to my attention and assisted me in finding the best option for what I was looking for. Also, if you are affiliated with the UW and have a U-Pass, you get discounts here. I have also come here to schedule service for my bike and they are usually prompt in performing service for walk-ins. The only service that I needed to schedule an appointment for way in advance was for a tune-up so be forewarned that this type of service takes time to get done. Came here today to look for used bikes for my son and myself. They didn't have what I was looking for but they had a few kids bikes in my son's size. We were helped by Ben who was great - no high pressure sales pitch here. After we found the one we wanted, I asked for help with helmets. I really appreciated that Ben took the time to make sure my son's helmet was perfectly fitted. Although the used selection wasn't huge (probably the result of a lot of warm sunny days this spring), we left happy. read more

Recycled Cycles is a solid bet as far as local bike shops go. They generally have more reasonable rates for labor and parts than neighboring shops, and their selection of used bits is quite good. The staff members are generally quite friendly, although no shop is perfect. I enjoy the atmosphere of their business. The staff members are quite knowledgeable. I don't recall ever getting any real attitude from them, whereas many other local bike shops are prone to assuming an air of arrogance. read more

The guys here have the best attitude, and the best sense of humor. They're usually friendly, down to earth, and for the most part lack the condescension that is a staple at most other bike shops around town. For the most part their service dept. is excellent but there are one or two newer guys who need a little more experience. I once had them tighten my headset. As I was riding home the top cap popped out of the steerer and into the street, which was kinda scary. Another time, I had them cut my carbon fork and despite my clear instructions they cut it about 2 inches too short which made it unusable. However, the guy was very apologetic and immediately cut me a generous check covering the price of the fork, threw in a free can of lube, and gave me free service the next time I went there. Their prices for parts are usually a bit cheaper than those at Gregg's or surrounding shops. I wouldn't go for their used bikes though - they're usually a bit overpriced. Try Craigslist instead. read more

We got great service here last Saturday. Even though it was crowded, we were immediately greeted by the cashier. She directed us towards the type of bike we were looking for and said Misha would be right with us (he was helping another customer). We had gone into two other bicycle shops that day and been totally ignored, so this seemed promising. We went over to the comfort bikes, and soon Misha came over to help us. He asked us what kind of riding we plan to do (VERY casual) and suggested a couple of bikes. He made sure they fit us properly before letting us test-ride them. I found a bike that I liked, but the seat was uncomfortable. Misha helped me pick out another seat to try. Eventually, he had to get something to eat (I got the impression he had put off his lunch break because it was so busy), but before he did, he arranged for the service department to change the seat for me, and also wrote a note for the cashier to make sure I got a trade-in credit for the original seat. The new seat turned out to be worse than the original. I started sitting on other bikes (to try the seats) when Alex came over and said I might like the seat better if it were at a different angle. He adjusted it for me -- still no good. So we went inside and found another seat to try. He swapped them for me. Success! When we asked about a rack, Alex pulled out a used one for 25 bucks -- perfect. Alex put the bike rack on our car, showing my husband how to do it. Meanwhile, I was making the cashier's life difficult by giving her Misha's credit note after she had already rung me up - no matter, she was perfectly pleasant about doing it over. Overall, our experience at Recycled Cycles was fantastic. Everyone was very patient even though the place was a madhouse. We never felt pressured to buy anything or to hurry up and decide. We were never made to feel inferior because we know next-to-nothing about bikes. I can't vouch for their prices because I didn't actually shop around...I was happy to give them my money after the great service we received. Highly recommended! read more

These guys and gals are great. While they've got a long list of bikes they're working on (so sometimes it takes a few days or more to get something serious done), they often drop what they're doing to take care of smaller things. Recently, I had an amazing experience with Joe, who spent a good hour working on some pesky derailleur hanger alignment. It's so great to get real professionals in a bike shop who both 1) know what they're doing and are happy to explain, patiently, the details, and 2) have no attitude or air of self-importance and wrench snobbery. I've been going to Recycled Cycles for the better part of 10 years and have mixed it up with other shops (that happen to be closer when I need them)... I'll always be reminded that this shop is superior and well worth the trip. read more

I went here looking for a replacement back tire because mine was stolen. I'm no cyclist but enjoy being able to take my older, used bike out for a spin occasionally. The guy I spoke with quoted me $150 plus installation for a new wheel, tube, and cassette because they didn't have any used stock (RECYCLED Cycles??) and would have to special order. To top it off, the guy made me feel like an idiot because I didn't know much about my bike. The whole experience left me with a bad taste in my mouth and I considered not getting the bike repaired at all. Thankfully I took it down to Bike Works in Columbia City and got totally taken care of in a couple hours, with a positive and helpful attitude, for $40. I was interested in a bike for commuting to work, despite not having been on a bike in years. Tala at Recycled Cycles was amazingly helpful. She spent a long time helping me find the right bike for me. In particular, she spent quite a while going through the different sizes and different makes to find one that fit well. I have a sort of weird frame so that was an effort. She helped adjust each trial bike for me (seat height and such), which seems like an obvious thing but was not done by the staff at another store. As a gadget lover, I gave her many opportunities to upsell me on both bike models and accessories, but she made sure I didn't get more bike than I needed. That sort of integrity is really appreciated. All in all, a great experience for this new cyclist. read more

I just wanted to give a shout out to this LBS for really helping me out with an otherwise bad situation. I had had a wreck on a bike I bought at this shop in January 2015 that resulted in the frame being bent beyond repair. Even though the damage was outside of the warranty coverage from the manufacturer, Annie eagerly took in my bike and said she would check with Raleigh to see if I could get a discounted replacement frame. I wasn't super optimistic, but she got back to me a few days later with the good news that they had found a virtually identical replacement frame at a price that was way below what it would have cost me to get a new aftermarket frame from another manufacturer. This made an otherwise sad situation much less painful, especially for my wallet. Many thanks to Annie and Recycled Cycles for the awesome service! He knew my price point was lower than items on the floor, and gave me the resources I need to make the right purchase at the right time. I have been going to this shop for over a year. The Mehcanics seem great, honest, good deals, but a bit crusty and not the best in customer interaction. As for the sales staff the seem fine, honest and informative, I purchased my bike this past summer specifically for commuting and since I have been back a great deal. Some decent used parts, not much in used clothing but cheap bike parts however the turn over in the staff leads me to think there is little concern from the ownership over its employees. I also work for a small company and can see that an unhappy staff leads to unhappy customers. My biggest complaint is follow though from a special parts order a while back, no calls and I was unable to find out any information on the part at all. read more

This is a great bike shop! I've been going there 10+ years and have bought 5 bikes (adults and kids) and sold a couple to them. Their repair service is great. They are kind and informative and happy to teach you, unlike other bike shops that seem to want to keep bike repair a mysterious art. They have a wide and high quality selection of everything. This place is what I'd call "real world" oriented. It's not like a new BMW dealer, more like a great used Volvo or VW repair shop. Went in to buy a bike. After looking at a few bikes, went up to a salesperson and asked him if he could help me. He mouth said yes, his attitude said no. he couldn't have been less interested in trying to sell a bike. Tried to keep up an interaction asking about models and options, and he was civil enough in his answers, but gave me a feeling he'd be happier not talking to anyone that day. So I gave up and went to Alpine Hut, and had a completely different experience. They got my business. read more

I dropped my bike off to be fixed. He told me it would be roughly $185 for a variety of new parts, which I thought was a lot but understood because the bike was in bad shape. Seven days passed and they called me and told me it would actually be $350, which, as I had told them before, was way out of my price range. They suggested I just buy a new bike, which I would have done a week earlier had I known what they were actually going to charge me. The people who work there are generally friendly, but I am not happy with a business that makes you wait a week and then practically doubles the price on you. Don't trust the initial price they give you for repairs. read more

I have gone to Recycled Cycles a number of times for bike repairs. They always seemed friendly and helpful so I trusted their knowledge. Each time it cost more than I was expecting, but they seemed honest and I bike to work every day, so I figured I was just being hard on my bike. I took my bike in recently to get a new chain. The bike repair guy briefly looked at my bike and said, "It looks like you need a tune up". I told him that THEY had done a tune up recently (when I got home I checked my receipts, the tune up was just 5 weeks earlier). He backed off the tune-up idea. He said it looked like I needed a new back tire, but I had bought two new tires - from them - about 6 months ago. He backed off that as well. He said my brake cable was pinched and needed to be replaced along with a new chain and new cassette. I agreed to have them repair my bike - then he told me it would be up to 2 1/2 weeks before they would have time to repair it. I hoped they'd have it repaired in 10 days when I returned from vacation. 10 days later, since it wasn't repaired, I picked up my bike and took it to another shop. That shop said my cable was ok, my cassette was good enough to last a few more months and if I could wait 20 minutes they'd replace the chain and do a few other small items. I walked out of the other shop with my bike work completed, for about half the price of what Recycled Cycles quoted. I am left with the impression that the repair guy at Recycled Cycles made some assumptions about me when I walked in the door (overweight middle-aged woman with money, just dusted off bike after storing it all winter) and based his repair recommendations more on those assumptions than on what repairs were actually needed. They've lost my trust. I will not return again to Recycled Cycles for bike repairs. read more

I took my bike there for a tune-up during the spring. After about 2 weeks my bike was ready, I took it for a spin and it felt like they hadn't even worked on it. Took it back in, they re-tuned it. Still wasn't great, but at least the shifting was better. Customer service in the shop area is really poor. Good stuff: nice deals on used equipment. Bottom line, take your bike to a real bike shop for maintenance. If you want spare parts so you can do your own this place has the deals. read more

Stopped in on a random day for a bottom bracket that was close to 20 years old and grinding like a mule and a really nice fella spent a good 30 minutes trying to get it off to replace it. He finally did, though he smoked a tool to wrench it off. I apologized for what should of been an easy fix but he just smiled and said he liked the challenge. I know nothing about bikes. At all. And most bike shops are intimidating as hell, because it's a heap of people who know figuratively and possibly literally everything there is to know about bikes. But because I am eternally naive, I decided I wanted to build a bike. I have gone in there four times in as many days, and each time they have been unfailingly patient and helpful. If they're judging me for not knowing the different between men's and women's saddles, or the fact that a crank is a thing, or what even is a derailleur? they certainly aren't showing it. I am going in there bright and early tomorrow morning with about 95% of a completed bike and a whole heap of unrelated cables that may be for brakes, may be for shifters, and I am begging them to complete this bad boy for me. And I am confident they will help me and be super chill and kind about it. Because seriously, did we ever figure out what a derailleur is? read more
