Why 5 stars? Because this was my favorite bike rental experience to-date. --- --- --- My friend and I have a tradition of renting bikes and going for a ride when we travel places. I did a lot of research to see where I should rent bikes from and where we should ride, and we ultimately landed on on Recycled Cycles and the Burke-Gilman trail. Both were awesome! The only bummer is that we had some travel issues that got us here later than we anticipated, and we only had about an hour and a half to ride. Fortunately, they gave me a bit of a break on the price, because of that. The bikes were awesome. I am absolutely not a crazy bike aficionado like my friend, but this was my favorite bike that I've ever ridden. It was so light that up-hill climbs were so much easier than any other bike I've been on. And all of the people here were so cool. They gave us a bunch of good recommendations for our ride and for what we could do in the city afterward. It was as if the city of Seattle paid them to ensure we had a good experience on our visit. Bought a Kona Dr. Dew here, because they were only shop in area who had range of models and sizes to test ride. When I took the bike into my trusted local shop after riding aound 500 miles because derailur was out of adjustment they found that one of the wheels needed hub service (not typical after 500 miles of riding) and a low quality derailur hander had been used. Maybe this was Kona quality issue, but I expect a full service shop would note and repair these issues when assembling the bike. read more

Really great shop! I bring my Surly Disc Trucker in about once a year for a tune-up and they always do a very good job, which includes going over the bike with me when I arrive and let them know what I think needs doing. Usually, I haven't needed all that I thought I did, and they don't hesitate to let me know this, so they're not only knowledgeable, but trustworthy. Last week was no different, and, in addition to letting me know that only a couple of the things I thought I needed were actually necessary, they were able to finish the work several days earlier than expected. Justin was great when I brought my Surly in for a tune-up two or three weeks ago. He took enough time to go over my bike thoroughly, looking at the cables, braking, shifting, tire wear, condition of the cogs and chainring. He told me I didn't really need a tune-up! He did say that my tires, though not in need of immediate replacement, were getting there, and, having noticed that my bar tape was all peeling and worn, asked if I'd like to have that replaced. (Yes, yes!) There was no pressuring, no rushing through the explanations of things I'd been wondering about. Updating my review to reflect some changes particularly around pricing and environment. Before I said they had really good prices on used components. Now I would say they have okay prices. It seems that the cost of inflation on rent and labor has really hit them, which is understandable. However the cost of bike components overall has dropped radically since 2020, meaning that retail prices (even on high end brands that rarely to never go on sale) are currently discounted heavily in many places because of the problems with the supply chain and then subsequent over-ordering. What this means is that for an object that normally costs $60, I can now buy it new for $50 (even in some brick and mortar bike stores - not just online which is a totally different ball game), but Recycled is selling it used for $45. At that rate I'll just buy new. I noticed this across a range of items from rims to stems to brake and drivetrain parts. Presumably as the bike parts industry recovers from the whiplash it's currently experiencing, this weird price distribution will even itself out, but as of early 2023, the prices here just aren't that competitive. Environment is still higher on the bike shop bro end of the spectrum, but not the worst. I'll go in and certain employees will act like I'm a clueless derp until I start explaining that I'm building a bike or whatever and then their demeanor totally changes. So that's a step in the right direction I guess, plus more of the employees recognize me now so that's also helped. Last note is be very careful parking in the free 2 hour parking lot. The lot is heavily policed for parking violations by SPD because of proximity to UW. Most recently, I parked where I've parked dozens of times and got a ticket for impeding traffic even though I was parked in line with 3 other cars and by any rational observation not blocking anyone's entrance/egress. There are no ground paint markings (or if there are, they're always covered with puddles and gravel) so it's totally unclear where you are or are not actually allowed to park. Unless the city installs better marking and/or signage about which areas of the parking lot you can't park in, I'd avoid it and just pay for street parking to save yourself the inevitable ticket. read more

I love getting and donating bicycle parts here to keep my bike in decent shape. The staff is always friendly, helpful, but not pushy to make a sale. I have had service done once and it was quick despite there being a queue- I was told several hours, and they called me back within one. They have a good return policy, and when I had a part that didn't work out I got to just switch it for a different one in shop. I was in the market for an upgrade and went to Recycled Cycles as I was open to both used and new bikes. I was helped immediately by a friendly person named Scotty. I tried out 3 bikes (1 new and 2 used) in my size. It was a rainy day. For my test rides Scotty adjusted the seats to my height and also attached a fender to the back of the bikes for me. Unfortunately the bikes weren't exactly what I was looking for as my parameters were extremely specific. Scotty was patient the whole time and really helped us out with the test rides. After having a not so great experience at another used bike shop, I wasn't going to get my hopes up here. Before I went into the shop, I had looked at their FB page to see what their inventory on used bikes were. Per their website, they say they post pics of their used bikes inventory on FB, so that was helpful. I knew going in, I probably wasn't going to find a used bike here even though, that was my end goal, to buy a bike. (Also, my budget to buy a bike was $200-300, which I thought was a good price point for a used bike, apparently you can't find anything in that price range unless you shop at target/Walmart/Fred Myer...) I also know nothing about bikes, so I don't feel comfortable shopping on craigslist for one. Anyways, back to Recycled Cycles. I am pretty sure the guy who helped us was named Chad. Or at least he looked like a Chad? He first approached us and asked if we needed help, I told him, "I am looking for a bike in the $200-300 range, commuter bike I can use to ride to work,", of course I was told they didn't have anything for me but true reasoning behind this 5 star review is that, he was helpful and informative, even though he knew I wasn't buying a bike there. He sized me up, said I was around 5'4 right off the bat (ding ding), and I would normally be a 16 in frame. He also recommended 2 bike brands to me, Diamondback and Raleigh, and to check them out online, and they were having a great sale right now. If I ordered from them online, it's free shipping, tax free, and also free bike assembly at a pro shop (Recycled Cycle is on their list of pro shops to get assembled at!), and also they had bikes in my price range, and that they are good bikes! OMG very helpful! Coming from someone who knows nothing about bikes, him telling me all this was very informative! I found a bike on Raleigh for $299 (no tax either! Can't say enough good things about these guys! I reserved one bike to ride the Burke-Gilman trail on a busy Saturday but my sister decided to join me at the last minute. The staff had no bikes available (did I mention this was STP weekend!) but worked hard to find a used bike to loan at a cheaper price. Then, when an early rental came back during our checkout they gave us that bike at the same reduced price! It's clear the staff love biking and are passionate about their jobs.
