I came in with a mystery problem 15 minutes before closing and Charles quickly diagnosed the problem then rebuilt my entire rear cassette body. He stayed open late to see the fix through so I could ride back home. Saved me hundreds of dollars by rebuilding it with parts he had in the shop. ****FYI cash-only. 7-Eleven across the street has an ATM.*** Charles is a nice guy who also really knows bikes. He went the extra mile, heck, the extra 10 miles to get my front brake fixed. It was 1/3 the cost of the estimate I was given at a nearby shop that couldn't even handle the job for a month out. Charles took care of it while I waited. Lots of customers came and went while I waited and I witnessed him treat every customer with courtesy and respect. For my front brake, Charles had to re-thread 2 parts so they would fit together again! He had a really handy re-thread file tool which I've never seen or heard of. He told a few stories while I waited and he worked. He gave me a tip on where to go to see salmon running and seals feeding (and possibly orcas waiting at the mouth of the inlet to feed on the seals #PBSlive). AND I learned a lot about the bike I've owned since 2008 that I never knew before. Besides being personable, efficient, respectful, and informative, Charles is a Master. Time and time again whenever I'm in "bike crisis" mode, I cart my bike over to Wright Bros. where Charles professionally & kindly takes the worries from my brow. He's competent, skillful, professional, and conscious of our wallet. He readily gives advice on all types of bike-related topics everything from which locks are best theft protection, recommendations for bike care and even adding bike touches without charge. Once he put on a leftover mirror which he had available for no charge; another time, he adjusted/replaced a nut/bolt on the bike stem that a prior owner had jerry-rigged incorrectly creating a steering problem. Great service with attention to details You feel like you've gone back in time when you walk into Wright Bros. Charles has owned the shop for 40+ years and you can tell he's a bike aficionado. He has collector bikes hanging from his ceilings, all with a story. My wife bought an entry level road bike off of Amazon and we just couldn't get the brakes setup properly so I brought it in for Charles to take a look at. Charles immediately saw that the front brakes had been bent so I left the bike for Charles to fix for me. He later found that a gear tooth was also bent and, more importantly, that the manufacturer had actually used the wrong rear deraileur. Because it had the wrong deraileur, the gears would not change smoothly. Charles swapped out the incorrect deraileur and put in the correct one for me. Charles was thoughtful enough to take photos of the issues so that I could then file a complaint with Amazon, which was instrumental in me getting a refund from Amazon on the messed-up bike. Tips: Call ahead so the shop is aware you're going to be coming by to drop or pick up a bike--he is swamped! Also it is cash only--just a heads up! Had some issues with my front derailleur (last tune up person at a different shop didn't resolve the issue) and a back tire popping. A little under a week for pick up and drop off. Reasonable pricing and what I believe to be a good turnaround time considering everybody has gotten into biking, and/or has decided to get work done on their bikes. If I've got future issues or need a tune-up, definitely stopping by again. read more

Charles saved me $175 and lost a sale just to help me out! I rode in with 6 broken spokes and he confirmed that it was due to a defective rear wheel. Charles removed the wheel, stored my bike and advised me to have the seller (REI) replace the broken wheel. I immediately went to REI where they replaced the wheel and came back to Wright Bros. Called before I came in and spoke to Charles, the owner. He was very knowledgeable and helpful over the phone. Within a few minutes, he had the solution mapped out, and when I showed up 10 minutes later, he stopped what he was doing and started the initial work on my bike to make sure his plan was going to work. Once he was certain he could help, he took my number and promised to have my bike back same-day. Charles' shop is the kind of business any city would love to have, but especially one that is going through the kind of rapid development that Seattle is experiencing. Oh yay! All the gears on my bike work now! And my bike rides smooth. I'm so glad I took my bike here. He is the real deal. A few years ago I brought my bike to a shop in CA. The guy improved it a bit but didn't get my gears to work properly. I couldn't shift them into the most important gears, which was such a bummer. I was thinking about selling my bike because it was a pain to ride but I love my bike. So I ignored the problem. Like you would your boyfriend who has a few flaws. Hehe Last week I took my bike to Wright Bros for another issue and told him about my gears. He said he could fix them. And he did! He also tightened up a few things and replaced some dying parts. I love the feel of my bike now. But I still can't beat guys up the Fremont Ave hill. At this point, I think that has more to do with me than my bike! read more

Wright Brothers represents the last of the Whole Earth, you can do it, back to the land movement of the early 70s. Don't quite understand the concept then stop in to this shop - bring your bicycle- and enjoy the true retro experience. I've been doing just that since 1977. Charles doesn't sell new bicycles, but he does sell, and very inexpensively at that, knowledge and empowerment to thousands of bicyclers. The classes on repair are superbly taught, fun and very hands on. The co-op work space and tools are worth many times the cost each time you use them. Membership is a pittance and is lifelong. This is also a great place to meet fellow bicyclers while working on your favorite steed. Often the extra hands on help is the quickest way to learn to solve a myriad of problems that may arise. Hands down, this is one of the best customer service experiences I have ever had. Charles earned a customer for life today. I have read some pretty scary reviews for the bike shops in Seattle - enough to scare away a novice from entering this elite shops. But reading such great reviews for Wright Bros gave me hope. Without an appointment, Charles told me I could bring my bike in and he got to work right away. He had customers coming and going all day, plus other bikes that were waiting to be repaired, but he made the time to work on my bike AND taught me a thing or two about how my bike works. Let me just say, the difference in my bike before bringing and after was like night and day. I was as excited as a 9 yr old at her first sleep over. Amazing service and great prices! The guy who runs this shop is so knowledgeable. He sold me a lock and some new bike handles, then walked me through how to install the handles. When I failed to install the handles properly (my fault for not following his instructions) I brought the bike back to the shop and he had them installed in less than 5 minutes. I feel obligated to post up a review for Wright Bros Cycle Works. This establishment is too good to go without a ton of positive reviews. I learned most of what I know about bike mechanics from Charles and Devon. Before I get any further I have one piece of advice, BRING CASH! Wright Bros is a cash only establishment. You don't need to bring a ton of cash as their prices are totally reasonable (which I can't say for most shops in Seattle). This is less of a bike shop than it is a bike cooperative/repair shop (if you are too lazy to fix your own whip) $35 (might be $30 I forgot) gets you a LIFE TIME membership to the cooperative. This is full access to all the tools, equipment, and KNOWLEDGE you need to repair/build your bike. read more

What kept me coming back is their co-op workspace ($30 lifetime membership, no hourly) where you often get alot of free help from other bikers. I brought in my old, long-neglected Gitane for some much needed repair, and he brought it back to life in a few short hours, making it run smoother than it has in years. They like showing people around the anatomy of a bike, and Charles teaches classes to help cyclists find their own way. The service is great, but the shop work-space has work stands and plenty of tools for self-service. I've just started riding my bike again in the last few months, after years of not, and am really glad to know I can go to Wright Brothers to either have something fixed or to be showed how to do it myself, or both. The selection and availability of products in the shop was fantastic. It's very different to normal bike shops, in so many ways it's impossible to list them all. The bike tech obviously knows his stuff and was willing to let me self-service to find the part I was looking for from a collection of similar parts, right down to ensuring that I had the necessary tools to fix the problem. When I asked about an unnecessary part that I was looking for, he offered me a similar product that would have done what I wanted, but not for the reasons that I wanted, although technically it wouldn't have made a huge difference. Not to dispute him, but it's a difference of ideals and results rather than what works. His solution definitely would have worked. The service was a little unusual, but I have the distinct impression that if I needed to find a rare part and have it fitted, Wright Bros Cycle works would be the place to go. I would go back if not just for a better look, but also because there's a mystique about this place that I would like to find out more about it. read more

I was riding by on 36th last week with friends when I realized my back wheel needed some air. I knew about the shop, so I pulled off the road to make a quick stop and fill up. As I did so, my pedal fell off. Yes, it just fell off. "Well, at least I'm in front of a bike shop." I rolled my less-than-trusty chariot over. Closed. I resigned myself to be taking the bus back home and figure out my predicament another day. Just as quickly as my hopes had been dashed, a man walks up and mentions that he saw my crippled bike roll by as he was sitting on a nearby establishment's porch. I got a bit confused and wondered if he just happened to be a friendly guy who knew the shop was closed and thought he could lend a hand. Turns out, this was the Yelp-famous Charles, proprietor of the very shop I had been disappointed to find was closed. He examined the problem, then pulled out his keys. Long story short, 20 minutes later, I had a working bike (replaced my crank, cleaned up my pedal threads). Charles asked how much I had on me and I told him, nervous that he would ask me to come back to pay a bit more. Luckily, he thought my $25 cash was sufficient and I was on my way. They don't sell new bikes, you won't find a crabon bike in the shop and it's been there for 35 years. Only bummer is that you won't find used parts there, but lots of quality not too expensive new parts to choose from and cool old italian road bikes to drool over as you fix you're own rig using their tools. Charles and Devin provide quick, affordable, and efficient bike servicing. they are conveniently located in the heart of Fremont- I regularly drop in for tube replacements, wheel trues, chain cleaning and lubricating, purchases, etc. and they are always quick in providing me with excellent service. they are also very knowledgeable and patient in responding to my many questions. I love the fact they are a co-op. For a $30 lifetime membership, you have access to their bike stands, work space and tools to work on your bike. Well worth the value. I own an expensive Cinelli bike with Campy Record groupset and don't hesitate to have them work on it. they also have a great supply of bikes, accesories, parts, aparel, etc. Great place! read more

The owner and the family is very kind and I got my bike fixes very fast. He also speak a little bit Mandarin. They only take cash, and there's a 7-11 across the street. Melo Jonnies in Austin was ready to install a new drive train for $1800. I called Charles and he walked the mechanic through the steps of rebuilding my shifter which was out of date. Now it's like you have the opportunity to work on your bike yourself and learn all about how to maintain your beautiful vehicle!! And really you can probably finish it in only twice the amount of time it would take Charles to fix most of the basic issues himself. When you need help, just ask. Charles is there to assist, and depending on the fix you're trying to make, time of day, and business demands, he may even give you a quick tutorial on less intuitive fixes like servicing wheel hubs, adjusting derailleurs, or replacing bicycle cables/housing, etc.. Do you have a box of parts and want to build a frame from the ground up?? Just come by and hang out, there's no way to describe here on the internet what the serenity of working on your bike in a quiet and happy shop like this one can do for your cycling life. This is great service and great people are always coming in and out. Charles would rather teach you how to fix your bike and show you exactly what went wrong with your machine than try and rip you off or charge you more for petty upgrades. Better yet, he may even have some recommendations on what to do next time, or turn your head to fascinating alternative horizons in the world of cycling. You can repair your bike there and Charles will lend you tools and give advice, even assist. I saw him straighten a valve stem for a walk in customer by putting a bike on a stand, removing the rear tyre and reseating the tube,for free! Charles let me use his tools to refurbish a 1972 Raleigh I had just purchased off Craigslist. It had the 25" frame I could not get reasonably anywhere else. Top notch service. NOTE: Shop is CASH ONLY! I went in to simply get two flat tubes replaced, which was odd for me since I had puncture-resistant tires, and I merely assumed I had been the victim of another one of the Burke Gilman/Westlake upholstery tack vandals. Not only did he verify they were flat by pumping up the tubes and visually inspecting them fully (turned out to be bizarre internal puncture/tube failures), but he carefully checked the inside of the wheels and spokes to verify nothing on the wheels themselves was going to re-produce that problem. He also gave a tuneup quality overview of my whole bike, and explained how and why things needed replacing (like my glazed front brake pads), and replaced them with brake pads you can easily slide off/on replacements on your own with a small wire. He even rethread and tightened a stripped bolt for a handlebar cable that a previous tech had stripped out, and adjusted my quick-release to release more smoothly, and gave me advice on filing down some of the wheel to remove grit and improve brake life. read more
