In the years since, I have found that the only thing I have noticed changing is that they are continuing to try and grow and provide their (incredibly affordable) services to the local community to get as many people (both kids and adults) on bikes, as possible. Every single time I bring my bike to the store, they do their best to at least diagnose the problem and give me a reasonable estimate of when I could expect to have my bike fixed up. They are incredibly transparent about everything they do, and every time they ring up the bill it comes up to be less than I expect. But it doesn't even end there! During the summer, they have a mobile truck that rides around the area to provide their repair services free of charge for the local community! I absolutely love what they do, and there is no bike shop I enjoy visiting more than Bike Works.

If, however, you have a questionably overpowered long-tail cargo bike running a custom Bafang BBSHD mid-drive setup that may or may not have been engineered during a caffeine-fueled "more capability and power is always a good idea" phase... these are your people. I rolled in with what can only be described as a mechanical riddle wrapped in an enigma of wiring harnesses and torque sensors. My Bafang BBSHD setup had become inhabited by a small tribe of mean spirited electrical gremlins. I'm capable with bike mechanics, but this had gotten over my head - I was bracing for a massive bill (maybe significant part replacements). Instead, the team at Alki Bike & Board just... handled it. Calmly. Confidently. No drama. No upsell. Just pure competence. The bill was less than 1/10 what I had expected. This crew is overseen by a guy called Dayton - I'm not sure if he is more Thor or Hercules. On one hand, he seems like he could summon lightning directly into a mid-drive motor. On the other hand, he has the calm, slightly amused strength of someone who has already defeated twelve labors involving stripped bolts and cross-threaded bottom brackets. Either way, the man is operating on a different plane. He diagnosed the issues quickly, explained everything in plain English (instead of "mystical bike wizard dialect"), and fixed the whole situation for a small fraction of what I was mentally preparing to pay. I didn't believe him when he told me. Bottom line: Extremely knowledgeable Honest pricing No ego, no attitude Dayton = certified bike demi-god If you are near West Seattle and your bike needs anything beyond a gentle pat on the saddle, this is the spot. 10/10. They also did not sell it to me in the manufacturers packaging, it was instead in ziploc bag. After leaving the shop I double checked the price and went back to confirm I was charged for the right chain, thinking they rang me up for a 10 speed chain or something. The owner not only double downed that I was charged for the right item, but also he gave me a "deal". Credit where it's due, there was no fuss with processing the return from the owner. When I confirmed that REI, EVO, and Greggs all have this exact chain listed at less than $12(and in stock) he just told me, "yeah I'd pop over there then." I won't be back, but if you choose to do business here I'd be very cautious and check their work.

I was then promptly ignored as other customers walked in the door and he started talking to them (despite the fact that I was standing right in front of the salesperson). I was actually interested in getting a new floor pump. I was waiting for the sales guy to stop even for just as second to say, "are you doing okay?", but nope. I guess I didn't rate for whatever reason. Perceived fitness level, income....? I checked out the floor pumps. They didn't seem to be particularly well made, although the Dual Charger gets good reviews online. No reaction from the sales person as he dealt with other people and ignored me. I heard guys in the back, service area, talking, talking, talking. Did the one sales guy holler to the back and get someone to come out since he apparently can only deal with one customer at a time? Nope. I started to make my way out but stopped to look at the shoes that had clearance signage, but couldn't actually get at them because they were blocked by multiples bikes still in boxes shoved up against the shoe display. One more chance for anyone in the store to try to sell me something. I didn't even get a "thanks for stopping in". This is a real shame. A Trek was the first "real" bike I bought with my own money as a teenager. I have fond memories of Trek. I'm just getting back into cycling again. I actually have money to spend at this stage of my life. The single most important thing you can do in retail is acknowledge and greet the customer. And as the saying goes, you only have one chance to make a first impression. I bought a pump elsewhere, as well as some jerseys and shorts. (Full disclosure: if I seem a little harsh, I worked in bicycle and outdoor retail for 10 years, as a tech, service manager and store manager. As I shared the serial number over the phone, the staff person was not able to locate it in the computer. The rationale was that if the bike fell between a timeframe of specific years there was no record. The associate appeared helpful and listed the colors of the bikes by year and suggested I go on eBay or another site I don't recall to look up the bike. Now, there's nothing wrong with the over the phone service and the staff seemed like they did their job. Having worked in customer service and sales, I've had associates take down my name and number, do some research, and locate the a skew and model. I've also had associates ask me if there was anything they could do to help further make the customer experience stand out? This could be, come in the shop. I can talk to you about the warranty to see if anything is covered, or feel free and send me pics via email to send to corporate. The funny thing is, recycled cycles pulled up the picture of the bike, eyeballed the year and gave me price of the worth in 5 minutes. Even though they didn't work for Trek they knew their bikes. As a potential Trek customer, I hope that staff are trained to know about the history of the products they are selling and not just the latest models. I hope this can be a learning opportunity at Trek to please try a little harder as this experience needs a tune up.

A couple stopped to help me up and looked up some repair shops in the neighborhood so, carrying bike over my shoulder, I dragged myself to Free Range Cycle where Luke was able to assess the damages, repair the front brake, and get me back on the Burke Gilman by the time it took for me to walk to the PCC and back. I live down in the Mount Baker neighborhood, but this would be my "go-to" shop for any and all repairs - and certainly emergencies - if I lived north of the Ship Canal.

I debated for a couple of years whether to electrify my road bike. I had ridden it for probably 10…read moreyears and loved it. I didn't want to spend thousands on an e-bike and have two bikes to maintain. Bike Swift was really good at setting expectations and addressing concerns I had about extra weight, braking, and changing the feel of the bike. After picking up my bike, there was an issue with what turned out to be a non standard bottom bracket. They were diligent about figuring out and fixing the issue quickly. I've since gotten a bunch of rides on my converted bike and am really happy with it. As we had discussed, it still handles well and braking is not an issue. As a plus, the system they use is very configurable as far as customizing assist levels so that even with the extra weight, a 7% assist level makes it feel just like my bike did before conversion. I would have had to pay probably $3,000 to get a lower weight e-bike that did not fit me as well as my bike still does, and am really glad Seattle has a shop that provides this service.
