I've not visited this business before but I took a deep dive on their website and really loved the business model and cool creative names for tune ups. I like that it's women owned, local, and the bike selection is curated. What makes the website stand out is the links to the various brands and suppliers in which I took a good half hour going down a fun rabbit hole. By far, this website is the most in depth I've seen. There's no pretentiousness, info is up to date, and it looks like a fun indie shop. You also get to see who the mechanics are and their interests. I've never done a review for a website before and I hope it has an equal impact as an in person review. I'm excited to visit this bike shop. read more

You never forget how to ride a bike, but you certainly can't prepare yourself for crashing on one, which I did yesterday, just past J.P. and Gertrude, when my front brake inexplicably locked up and sent me flying head-first over the handlebars. A couple stopped to help me up and looked up some repair shops in the neighborhood so, carrying bike over my shoulder, I dragged myself to Free Range Cycle where Luke was able to assess the damages, repair the front brake, and get me back on the Burke Gilman by the time it took for me to walk to the PCC and back. I live down in the Mount Baker neighborhood, but this would be my "go-to" shop for any and all repairs - and certainly emergencies - if I lived north of the Ship Canal. read more

My favorite LBS! They specialize in steel frames for the retail part of the business which is rad, but will work on all flavors of bikes. It is physically a small shop (and they and they don't seem to have a warehouse) so their retail stock is somewhat limited compared to other shops, but for service this place is excellent. The best part of this shop is the atmosphere. If you are a person who is uncomfortable in many bike shops because of the Bike Bro™ attitudes, this would be a great place to check out. It is woman owned and has none of the toxic attitudes. They know their stuff and they're no nonsense, but they won't make you feel like a dumb@$$ just because you aren't a professionally trained mechanic. They also won't try to pull the wool over your eyes just because you "look" like someone who stereotypically looks like they might not know about bikes. Labor rates are maybe a bit higher than some of the bigger shops but imo it's worth paying more for a shop you trust. And besides, you save money in the long run by working with a shop that runs an ethical business: fewer return visits, less upselling, etc. read more

I've come to this shop a few times for various purchases and repairs. The one that sticks out in my mind was when I was buying parts for a touring bike and needed to pick out a set of tires. I'd already looked up a few tires online but information on them was scattered and contradictory. Talking to Shawna really helped because she put it in human terms: "Here are 2 touring tires with the characteristics you want. This tire is heavier but more puncture resistant". Saved me hours of research and indecision. Also, I appreciate that she suggested a moderately priced tire rather than the more premium Rene Herse or Gravelking ones. I needed to have my BB refaced because it still had the factory paint on the face, so the cups did not lay flat, and thereby caused two .05mm-1mm wobble in the large chain ring. With 2x-11 speed gearing that is enough to make the trims and shifting sub optimal. Shawna did the work like an expert. PERFECT now. Shaved off about 1mm total between the two side. She also knew not to chase (re-tap) the threads unnecessarily. Super fast, perfectly done, and only $15. Seriously, where do you get expert work done, fast for that price these days? It is a one woman shop. She returned my messages via email, like she says in the message on the phone. She does what she says. Exchanged 6 emails. I came down from Lopez Island to have the work done after Alley Cat in Bellingham did the build and got about everything wrong except the brake bleeds (Crank fell off on first ride, both derailleurs not adjusted, handle bar caps falling off, and headset loose). I am so pleased, I almost want to get another bike and have her do some work, or have her do some other work on my bike. If I do another build I will have Shawna do it. Lastly, she was highly recommend by another bike shop Dandelion Seattle, which only does e-bikes. read more

I bought my Surly Midnight Special here. I thought these guys were awesome. The owner is very sweet and patient and helped me make my choice as I vacillated between the surly and the salsa. She installed the bracket for my saddle bags and threw on some pedals and I was out the door and on my way. The only comment I'll make is that in the warm weather they are pretty busy with repairs and there may be a wait. But they are a great local business and I will support them. read more

My chain broke on a bike ride through Fremont, and I walked it up to FreeRange, but the sign said they had closed 30 mins earlier. My husband was with me, so he rode home to get our car. While I was waiting for the car, the person closing up shop noticed I was having bike trouble and came out to look at my bike/chain and even offered to fix my bike even though they had already closed up shop. I was in a hurry so I couldn't take get it fixed right then so I'm not technically a customer yet, but I plan on coming back for my next service, parts or repairs. read more

Great shop! I had my bike tuned up, fenders added, and a new lock mount installed. A few weeks after the changes my bike started slipping gears. I stopped by without an appointment, they explained what was happening and made the minor adjustment that was needed on the spot for free. I decided to take my bike here after moving to Seattle and searching extensively for bike shops. I'm really glad I found Free Range Cycles! The staff is extremely hard working and knowledgeable. They took their time to explain what needed to be done to my bike, and were super supportive in general. My bike is neither thriftstore stylish or new and flashy, and I'm not too proud to say that I have no idea how to change the tire. One thing I like most about this shop is that they don't give me attitude for either of these faults. The staff are polite, efficient, and totally lacking that "holier than though" attitude that some bike stores give to their unhip customers. Freerange is perhaps a bit more expensive than REI, but you also don't have to put up with the madhouse of REI's bikeshop on a weekend. Their prices are fair and I trust them not to do (and charge me for) more work than they need to. I've been there twice: once for a full tune up and once to change a tire. I've been wanting a new bike for the longest time and I found the perfect bike PLUS had a really great experience with the staff. I've been looking for a simple commuter bike to get me to work and on little jaunts on the Burke-Gilman, but I am a complete novice when it comes to bikes--besides the little work that I did online researching. I was pretty enamored with the Jamis Bikes, but I wanted to give a couple of other brands/places a try because, like I said, novice. My price limit was aroud $700. I went to Greggs, terrible customer service. Elitist, and the guy didn't want to answer our questions. Went to REI, and the bike selection seemed ok, but none of them were very sexy in my price range. I know, a bike isn't all about looks but it is important to feel good while riding you're bike--esp if you're going to be on it everyday. However, the woman was VERY helpful, and she said their new stock wasn't coming in for another 2 wks so to check back then. So, I decided to jaunt down to FreeRange to check out their selection. I went into the (very small) shop and described what I was looking for and what I wanted to spend, and the guy got straight up and said "let me show you what I think will be a perfect fit." Lo and behold, it was the Jamis bike that I had been lusting after! The dude spent time answering ALL of our questions, and explaining the difference between the different bikes we were looking at. He even changed out the handlebars and adjusted the seat for my friend (who has short arms and legs) even when she wasn't buying a bike that day. We each took a couple of bikes out to ride, and were able to get a great feel for the bikes. The owner, in my opinion, was pretty fantastic. She was helpful, answered our questions, and wasn't at all unfriendly or rude. She was very matter-of-fact about some things, but I found her to be extremely friendly, she gave her opinion when I wanted it, and was overall really helpful. I really liked when other customers came in and she called them by name and KNEW their bikes and the owners. And even though she knew that I was a beginner, she never once made me feel stupid or less informed. Two hours later (ish), I made my purchase complete with fenders, lights, a slim bike rack, and everything that I needed for my bike. I had such a great experience here with the staff and absolutely LOVE my bike. Now I just have to get over the fear of it getting stolen to actually ride it :) read more

Don't Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The lady who works and maybe even owns this place is not helpful or even a little bit nice.I've been in a several times over the years, 1 out of 5 times she is tolerable, most of the time she is mean. Never again!!!!!!! Go to Recycled Cycles or Counterbalance they have only ever been pleasant, helpful, and chill. I would also, like the other guy said, rather carry my bike someplace else than go back. It is the only local independent store in my neighborhood that I will not go to. read more

Agree with the general consensus on Yelp - these guys are a nice, small shop, decently friendly, but they aren't great salespeople. I think "indifferent" is the word I would use - they're glad to help you out, and will help you put on or fix up whatever you need with their tools and time, but they're not going to go out of their way to figure out what you need. My experience today, though, was pretty good - the owner (who was working the front desk) helped me find fenders for my odd, shock-laden bike, figure out how to put them on, and pounded the weird shock-mounted front fender in for me. When I asked about spoke wrenches, she tried one to make sure it would fix my wheel, and spent a couple minutes straightening out my wheel a bit while she was a it. It's a four-star place, minus one star for attitude and warmth, but they get a bonus star back for straightening my wheel and fitting the fenders for me. read more

I'm a bicycle dummy, and when my movers showed up, my mountain bike (which hasn't seen a mountain in six years) was in pieces. They put it back together, but tires were flat and I didn't know whether they'd done a good job. FreeRange doesn't do tune-ups on the weekends, but they said they'd take a quick look. Without judgment, the guys gave me explicit instructions on how to use their foot pump and told me the ideal PSI for my tires, checked out my brakes, and answered a zillion questions about lights, locks, slick tires and overall city riding. They didn't try to sell me the most expensive stuff in the shop. When I thought aloud about buying a rack and some saddlebags, one of the guys told me he preferred a simple messenger bag (ie -- maybe you DON'T need to spend more money here). Plus, I love the cute chicken theme. read more

Got my sweet bike here, no complaints. I like the no pressure style and casual attitude of the sales guy. I tried out several bikes here and at Recycled Cycles, but the steel frame just felt the best. I would give 5 stars but the owner could do a little more to make you feel welcome and give you that warm fuzzy feeling that you'd like when you spend some hard-earned cash on a spendy bike. I bought a $4,000 bike at this shop. It was delivered to me with the shifters loose, the brake levers not swapped as I had requested, the fender loose, the wrong front derailleur so that I could not shift down to the small ring easily, and the headlight pointing up so as to blind oncoming cyclists, drivers, and occupants of 2nd story apartments. The fender clearance was really tight, and the front fender was very low. I was advised not to ride over any sticks. That's right, a $4k bike that I cannot safely ride over a stick. I returned the next day and the shop "fixed" the front fender, changed out the front derailleur and swapped the brake cables. But the bike was not safe. I rode off a 3" curb that evening and the front fender scraped. My friends at another shop were horrified and remounted it the next day. But they advised me that the fender clearance was not safe and I needed smaller tires. At this point, I get a snippy message from the shop owner because I have posted online that I hate the fenders. I did not identify the shop in that post (or any other). I obviously had no reason to trust them, but I decided to give them a chance, because they said they wanted me to love my bike. I did not accept the offer to replace the fenders because I am genuinely afraid to ride a bike they have worked on. But I did accept the offer to replace the tires. The next email I got informed me that they had ordered 42mm tires to replace the 41s that were too big. Again, not really a move that inspired confidence. I suggested that 38s might be more appropriate. On the way to work the day the tires were to be replaced, the fender started rattling horribly. I stopped and removed it. Four thousand dollars, four weeks and a bike I am afraid to ride. I was actually shaking the entire ride. And the owner informs me that I have handled THEIR mistakes incorrectly. I'm not supposed to say anything online. It will take a bit more work to make this bike safe, but I would rather pay another shop to do the work correctly than deal with Free Range. read more

I found my dream bike here! My bf wanted to buy me a new road bike for Christmas and after checking out several places, I finally found my bike here. The staff are pretty helpful and they have a good selection of bikes, but the downside is they seem to want to pinch a pretty penny out of you. PROS: 1. Really helpful staff. Ready to drop everything to show you many a bike. 2. Good selection of both basic and fancy shmansy bikes. 3. Average prices (not the greatest) CONS: 1. Only $50 discount on a 2011 bike. I feel like other places gave bigger discounts for buying older models. 2. They charged for fender installs even though I bought a bike here and they said fender installs would be included. 3. Squeaky (seat?) something that I still haven't figured out. Need to tone down the squeaking or take it in to be looked at. In any case, I love my lovely red and silver Jamis! read more

I recently moved to Seattle from California and needed a bike shop to fill the very large void left by The Path Bike Shop in Tustin California. After visiting the shop a few times for random purchases (bell, lube, etc), I was presented with the need to order a new bike for commuting around Seattle area since my Surly KM was recently stolen from my apt complex. I must say Freerange and their staff made the entire ordeal a very pleasant and worry free experience, even given the opportunity for major complications. When I called to order my new bike (Salsa Fargo 3 - woot woot!!) my CC info got messed up which could have easily spelled disaster considering Salsa only had 1 XL left in the Warehouse for shipment. However, having spoken with the owner Kathleen Emry several times about the Salse before placing my order she was kind of enough to order the bike for me knowing how much I wanted this bike and it was the last one. Which IMHO, puts Kathleen in ROCKSTAR status. New bike took about 5 days to arrive, the shop applied framesaver to the frame and had the bike built up perfectly to my personal specifications shortly after arrival ready for me to ride. All in all, I must say I'm very impressed with Freerange and Im not easy to impress when it comes to bike shops. However the combination of pleasant, knowledgeable staff and a really genuine concern for their clients (present and future) needs has given me the confidence to proclaim Freerange my personal shop of choice in Seattle. Coming from a "picky bitch" that says a lot. Thank you very much to Kathleen and the entire staff at Freerange. I'll post up some picks of the new bike soon. read more
