Advice for anyone thinking of commissioning any bike or frame build from this shop: GET IT ALL IN WRITING. Every time I talked to the customer rep Smiley, he would move the goalposts. First he would promise me the moon, and then he would gaslight me like "What? I thought you wanted X!" despite having been clear from the very first email about what I wanted. Highlights: 1) First they said they could build me the ebike I wanted if I provided the parts. But next time, he hits me with "I thought you just wanted a frame!", had me commit to doing the assembly myself. Then I couldn't even order my frame yet because suddenly we needed special permission from the owner. 2) They said they needed to measure my ebike battery before building the frame, and that I'd better get 4 battery braze-ons for added strength. And then they put the 4th braze-on in the wrong place (see picture), and wouldn't even refund me $30 for what it cost me. 3) I bought the extra-wide handlebar they told me to buy, because they would cut it to size. Next time I asked Smiley about it he said he couldn't cut it because he hadn't installed himself. 4) They called me the day before the build and asked me if I wanted the "extreme journey" upgrade. I couldn't decide in time so they called back and said "we made an executive decision to throw it in for free". I got charged $400+ for it. I was willing to compromise on everything. I got talked down from a bike build to just a frame. I bought my own parts because they didn't have the ones I wanted in stock. I spent weeks trying to seek a resolution over email but they insisted on only talking over the phone or in person. Giving them 2 stars because the builders and painter still did an excellent job with what they had to work with.

Fishy place...A guy in a red hat overcharged me $17.00 for 2 min of tool time? Felt like a rip off. I won't be back, take it somewhere else or watch YouTube videos and learn to do it on my own and save some $, because these guys are suspect. P.S. Thank you for calling my bike "LOW QUALITY"! I guess if you don't have a $10,000 e-bike your not worth their time LOL! So now when I eventually decide to get a new bike I'll know not to get it from this place. Thanks for making that decision for me pal! Later!

My vintage Erickson sees regular service at R&E Cycles. The crew there has been thorough, friendly and fair each time. Besides this historic shop being a Seattle landmark, they make time for each guest or cyclist in need, and always stands behind their incredibly precise work. We're really fortunate to have R&E!

Alright Seattle, what's the deal. Why are so many bike shops randomly closed? Seriously. We came here in need of a pump and some new tubes. Well, all our local shops were closed on a Tuesday afternoon. So we wandered around hoping to find one that might be open. We found this shop. The staff was friendly and helped us pick out a nice pump. The shop definitely was more than just a supply store. They were doing some serious repairs and stuff there. Got our tubes and some new water bottles for free. Nice guys. They even have a nice coffee shop in the store!

I came in with zero cycling…read moreknowledge, and the folks there were super helpful in giving me some guidance about the different types of bikes. I was originally looking for a used bike but they only had two in my size that were both road bikes. I tried them both but ended up going with a new gravel bike that was a bit more all-purpose! They have a lot across the street where you can try out the bikes for as long as you need. I ended up testing out four diff bikes, and they were super nice about all of it even though it took me forever. They didn't have the color I wanted, but they let me know how to order it online and have it shipped there so they could build the bike for me. They said doing it this way is the same as buying directly from the store! I still get all the benefits like 30 days of free accessories installation and such. My partner also got a used bike that was in great condition!

I chatted with him while he fixed my bike and all of the prices were transparent with no hidden cost. What I love about recycled cycles is the fact that I can learn as I go and at my own pace. UPDATE: After posting this review, it somehow got worse. On a later visit, an employee -- who I…read moreunderstand may be a part-owner -- confronted me about the review, followed me out of the store, and called me a "chicken shit" on my way out, blaming me yet again for the entire situation. I'll let that speak for itself. A business that responds to honest, factual feedback by chasing a paying customer out the door and throwing insults has told you everything you need to know about how it treats people. This update wasn't something I went looking for -- it just confirms the exact pattern I described above. REVIEW: I'll stick to the facts. I spent over $6,000 at this shop -- and apparently that doesn't buy you even baseline customer service. I bought my bike here, and after a front wheel/tire failure caused a crash, I went through a Giant warranty claim with Montlake. The product side eventually got resolved, but dealing with them was frustrating from start to finish -- and the real problem wasn't the logistics, it was the attitude. From the beginning, I got the clear sense the shop saw me as an inconvenience rather than a customer. Communication was poor across essentially everyone I dealt with: no timely updates, no callbacks, no straight answers, and I was the one chasing them at every step. More than the delays, it was the tone -- dismissive, condescending, and openly impatient any time I asked a reasonable question about my own bike. One phone call summed up the whole experience. A staff member told me to "chill out dude, you got a new bike even though it was your fault you crashed it," and to stop "beating a dead horse." Talked down to, blamed, and brushed off in a single call. It's also just wrong -- it reflects a basic misunderstanding of how Giant's warranty and crash-replacement programs actually work. I don't expect a shop to agree with me on everything, but I do expect basic respect -- especially as a customer who put thousands of dollars into this place. The product issue got sorted out eventually; the attitude is why I won't be back, and why I'd point other riders elsewhere.

If, however, you have a questionably overpowered long-tail cargo bike running a custom Bafang BBSHD mid-drive setup that may or may not have been engineered during a caffeine-fueled "more capability and power is always a good idea" phase... these are your people. I rolled in with what can only be described as a mechanical riddle wrapped in an enigma of wiring harnesses and torque sensors. My Bafang BBSHD setup had become inhabited by a small tribe of mean spirited electrical gremlins. I'm capable with bike mechanics, but this had gotten over my head - I was bracing for a massive bill (maybe significant part replacements). Instead, the team at Alki Bike & Board just... handled it. Calmly. Confidently. No drama. No upsell. Just pure competence. The bill was less than 1/10 what I had expected. This crew is overseen by a guy called Dayton - I'm not sure if he is more Thor or Hercules. On one hand, he seems like he could summon lightning directly into a mid-drive motor. On the other hand, he has the calm, slightly amused strength of someone who has already defeated twelve labors involving stripped bolts and cross-threaded bottom brackets. Either way, the man is operating on a different plane. He diagnosed the issues quickly, explained everything in plain English (instead of "mystical bike wizard dialect"), and fixed the whole situation for a small fraction of what I was mentally preparing to pay. I didn't believe him when he told me. Bottom line: Extremely knowledgeable Honest pricing No ego, no attitude Dayton = certified bike demi-god If you are near West Seattle and your bike needs anything beyond a gentle pat on the saddle, this is the spot. 10/10. Will bring my mechanical chaos machine back henceforth!
