They also include first tuneup for free! Communication with them was awesome. Very professional and helpful. I took a basic bike in for brake and derailleur service. Both sets of brakes were same or worse than when I brought it in. They were nice and (maybe, we'll see after a day or so) fixed the problems on the spot. Though only because I found the problem for them and kept at them until they had taken another crack at doing the work over several rounds. I would not recommend these bike mechanics. read more

After a brief virtual encounter with a SF bike courier, I got inspired to get my mountain bike back into a proper functional status. Found Mend Bicycles, where else but Yelp, of course! Great stellar 5 star reviews, so thank you fellow Yelpers for steering me in the right direction. Yes, pun intended. I called last Saturday 5/2/20, polite and professional service on the phone with my customer info entered into their system. I brought my bike onsite within the last hour of their business day. This indie shop is located behind the NE corner of 75th and 35th in the Wedgwood neighborhood. They have a convenient parking lot too. Currently, customers cannot come inside the shop. Due to Covid-19, you call ahead and then are directed to another door to drop off your bike. Following an evaluation, one is notified by email of an estimate of the recommended work to be done. I called on 5/7/20 to check on the status of my bike. Turns out my estimate was emailed to the wrong address. I need to enunciate more, especially wearing the ubiquitous face mask. Got the estimate re-routed, work seemed reasonable, called back and approved the work to move forward. I received notification on 5/9/20 that my bike was ready for pickup. Earlier this afternoon on 5/10/20, I paid for and picked my mountain bike. Yay, perfect on this sunny Mother's Day! My bike was left with the capable and professional team at Mend Bicycles. I am happy with the final results, fair price, timely service, and overall experience. The SF Yelper got the idea initiated. But the previous Seattle area Yelpers provided the intel to personally vett Mend Bicycles, thanks again! Highly recommended! read more

They gave my bicycle a thorough tune up, attached aluminum fenders, and replaced tires, chain, and brake pads. The total cost was about $500, which may have been overboard for a $400 bike, but after 10 years without proper maintenance I felt it was well worth it. James was very helpful with giving recommendations and different options. The bike rides wonderfully now, and they even reattached the basket in a more stable way. I recommend Mend as a very good value for bicycle maintenance and repair. read more

After my recent confusion as to what was happening with the bike dropped off over a week ago, James wrote to me and figured out what went awry. Turns out the bike was ready when it was estimated to be ready (Saturday) but the email was inputted incorrectly so we didn't get the memo. We were able to pick up the bike today without issue and everything looked and worked great - took it out for a ride as soon as we got home. I found my new local bike shop! I needed a full tune up & some parts replaced on my tri bike. I first emailed to ask some questions & they responded within a reasonable hour. I came in for a quote & they explained the costs & their policy. They quoted me $40 over the estimated costs of labor & parts for incidentals, so if they find something unexpected that costs $40 or less, they'll just do the fix; if it's more than $40, they'll contact me to discuss. I brought my bike in 2 weeks later to get the work done when I'd be out of town. They told me it'd take a week, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was done the next day! I'd recommend mend bicycles for transparent pricing (I've definitely had my share of price surprises with other bike shops) & great service. read more

Word of mouth from a couple of friends brought me to Mend and I had a few good experiences with the shop crew buying parts and servicing a couple of my bikes. More recently I ran into a warranty issue unrelated to the shop that could have derailed the summer. James and his staff went out of their way to work with the manufacturer and get me rolling. I know from past experiences that many of the other LBS's in the area wouldn't have gotten involved, but Mend went the extra mile for me and now I'll be using them exclusively for my parts and more complicated service needs. read more

James is consistently kind and patient with my kids and I as we ask endless questions, try on all the things and take a long time (weeks sometimes) to decide whether to buy. He's given me solid advice about how to extend the life of one of my vintage bikes while also being very clear with me about danger signs I need to watch for when it crosses from merely old to unsafe. His crew includes some sort of wizards - my bikes ride better after their tune-ups than they did new. It's so wonderful to be able to hobble a disabled bike a few blocks to a shop that's open every day and get immediate help that we make a point of buying as much of our cycling gear here than at the big guys - and we encourage the neighborhood to do the same. I just went in with a weird flat tire, and the two young ladies there were super friendly and helpful. I was told no charge since I had bought the tire a few months ago and it was defective and caused the flat. So I was given a new tire and tube. I recently brought my husband's beloved Co-Motion Mazama to Mend for an overhaul, and was so pleased with the knowledge and expertise, creativity and hard work of the mechanics who worked on his bike. My husband's home mechanic (that's me) had let a number of bearing surfaces go far too long without servicing, so when Mend began to dig into a proper overhaul on the bike they discovered a number of problems (including a rusty spacer fused to the steerer tube...aaagh!) that needed fixing, several of which were complicated (the bike has some non-standard components), and all of which they approached with patience and persistence and plenty of bike smarts. Now my husband's favorite old ride is in better-than-new condition, and his home mechanic's reputation has been saved (mostly) by Mend's excellent and very reasonably priced service. I highly recommend their overhaul--the labor included is very fairly priced, and they make very competent and practical decisions about what needs replacing. One last note: Mend also does a great job pre-selecting high quality and reasonably priced cycling gear and accessories. I recently bought a really excellent pair of warm and waterproof Enduro gloves, which have proven perfect for rainy winter dog walks as well as rides. I feel so lucky to have such a nice, local bike shop that carries almost everything I need for safe and comfortable cycling, and to maintain our fleet of bicycles...including, as it turns out, some expert assistance in doing so! read more

Cool LBS near a family member I was visiting. She recently bought her first bike and I was excited to grab a few essential bike items for her. The bike mechanic was friendly and knowledgeable on his first-hand advice for purchasing a floor pump. I also bought a small Allen key wrench set and chain lube as well. The visit got weird towards the end of my time when I was checking out their tire inventory (specifically the price of GP5000 TL cause I'm a bike nerd and like to support local bike shops as much as I can). I was told by an employee that I wasn't allowed to stand by the tire section because it was in an employee only section. Unfortunately I didn't spot any signs saying that it was employee only section and the tires were hung up on the wall just like all the other items in the bike shop. The layout of the store seemed logically enough with two work bike stands (one for the bike mechanic to do bigger repairs/adjustments and the other for quick fixes/diagnostics of problems). The tire inventory was located by the quick diagnostic repair stand which was empty and not currently in use so I assumed customers could take a look at the tire inventory for themselves which seemed out of the way of everything else. The employee seemed a bit frantic when she saw me checking out the tires and seemingly scolded me like I was a child for not knowing where I was suppose to stand. Again, I didn't see any signs saying that customers were not suppose to stand by the tires hung up on the wall with prices on them for sale. The employee didn't even ask me what kind of tires I was looking for or even offered me the chance to look at their selection. I was a bit confused at first on why I wasn't allowed to check out there inventory but understood the employee's request and put the tires back on the rack and stood back in a customer friendly zone. I then had to awkwardly ask her to hand me back the tires I was previously in the middle of looking at which made me feel like I was a kid in grade school asking the teacher if I may use the restroom. The employee seemed annoyed and not helpful during that particular interaction and I didn't really feel welcomed anymore so I went ahead to check out my other items I had already decided on and not buy tires. I understand that bike shops have gone through a tough year dealing with the pandemic and the influx of newcomers into the world of cycling. But making people feel not welcomed was not something I was not expecting and only makes more people go online to buy their cycling needs instead of support their LBS. Overall I appreciated the friendliness of the bike mechanic and the other employee who helped check me out but I left with the feeling of not being welcomed back due to my interaction with the rude (Im sure she not like that all the time) employee. Hopefully they can make clear boundaries in the bike shop for customers to know where they are and aren't allowed to stand so that others won't go through the same experience as I did! I brought in a bike I had bought from Craigslist or similar. They did a great job overhauling it, replacing worn parts, etc. I had never managed to make it up the hills of Roosevelt between UVillage and Northgate, but with the gears now working like a charm, I did it! They took a week to tune it up, but it was worth the wait. Nice and friendly staff as well, which isn't always the case at bike shops. I called to make an appointment to bring my bike in for new brake pads/chain, and seemed to have a misunderstanding where I thought I couldn't make any appointment to have my bike serviced, so I ended up just bringing in my bike. Despite no notice, I explained the situation and they were extremely helpful (by the way, it DOES help to call and set up an appointment first). I've lived in Wedgwood for 13 years. I have 2 young kids and my family was excited to have a local bike store in our neighborhood. I've been in a couple times for small stuff and they were fine. Today I'm shopping for my son's birthday bicycle and thought I'd support the neighborhood store. Door was open, I read all the signs, I had my N95, latex gloves and glasses on. Thought maybe my son could test ride a bike in the parking lot. Here's what I was greeted with: Me: Hello! Guy #1: Didn't look up from workbench Guy #2: Didn't get up from workbench. Gal: #1 talking loudly on the phone. Didn't notice me........... Me: Hi! Gal notices me and suddenly starts yelling "Sir, leave the store, you're not supposed to be in here, omg, please leave now! (To guy at workbench #1) "You should've locked that door!" (To the telephone, "I'm so sorry, some guy just walked in the store!!" So anyway, "some guy" took the $1000 I was ready to drop on a bike to Gregg's Greenlake where they were professional and interested in helping me rather than making me feel embarrassed, frustrated and surprised. And "some guy" will be buying his family's bikes and recommending his friends buy their family's bike at "some store" that isn't Mend. Beyond bad customer service - straight up rude.
