This is my favorite bike shop. When people ask me where to go for a used bike, I send them to BikeWorks, for new bikes I send them to Recycled Cycles. Disclaimer: I have never bought a bike there or had repairs done there. The best thing about the shop for me is the used bike part bins. Most of the used parts are from old bikes and are cheap, they often give me some used cheap part for free when I'm buying other things with it. I bought a new wheel and tire there that was below the price of other places I looked, though the employee did try to get me to buy an expensive hand built wheel at first. I also bought a nice rain jacket on 20% sale for someone that turned out to be slightly too small, when returning it for a larger size the sale was over so I was worried they would charge me the extra amount, but they went ahead and applied the 20% to the exchange as well. If I could give this place a 6 stars I would! I purchased a new bike at the Fremont location (now closed) 4 years ago. I usually leave my bike inside my apartment but last week I locked it up outside on a very public street to make more space for a guest. Within the day the bike was stolen and I hadn't even noticed. I received a call from this Recycled Cycles asking if I had purchased a bike 4 years ago. Apparently someone had stolen my bike and then tried to trade it in at this shop. Recognizing this was fishy, guy working ran the serial and called me up to let me know he had my bike! They held it in the shop and even did a bit of maintenance on the bike before handing it back. They also threw in some complementary accessories since my bike basket had been stolen. I'm overall super impressed with the level of customer service I received here. I would 1000% recommend this place to anyone looking to buy a bike. read more

I wouldn't trust my life to their mechanics. Went in for some minor work on my bike, had to wait 3 WEEKS to get it back. When I finally got it back, they had lost a spacer to my freehub and it was grinding and vibrating the bike, so I had to ride on a loaner wheel and wait AGAIN to get up and running at full speed because, naturally, they didn't have the missing spacer in stock either. If this had been race season I would have been screwed. So I'm pretty sure their business flow and quality control could use an upgrade. If I was on a fast descent, I wouldn't trust my life to the job they did putting my bike together. The reason for 2 stars instead of 1 is that you can get lucky and pick up a really high end part on the cheap there sometimes. read more

I bought a sweet bike off of Craigslist that I knew needed some work. I brought in my bike expecting to rack up quite the bill, but was pleasantly surprised. They even called me prior to completing the job to make sure I was okay with the estimated cost! As a poor college student at the time, I was grateful to know exactly what I was paying for. I've been pleased with all the bike gear I've bought here. Staff is very friendly and helpful for finding exactly what gear you need for the level of riding you do. Recycled Cycles (Boat Street) is the perfect place if you: 1. Definitely know your bike parts and your bikes as you can assess the value of their used parts they have available. 2. Are a commuter cyclist and need the basic parts to get your bike in operable condition. 3. Next to Herriott Sports Performance, Recycled Cycles might offer the best bike tune-up and wheel trues in Seattle. 4. Easter Eggs of vintage parts you are trying to find. I've seen Judy triple crown and Girvin forks here! Highlights, tips and 'keep-in-mind' things: 1. The customer service has improved since last year with more helpful and less condescending staff. 2. If you know what exact part you're looking for, such as "3 x 8 Shimano MTB shifters" or "square taper triple MTB crankset", you can usually get the staff to help you find those parts over the phone and put a hold on them should you pick them up later that day. 3. If you're a UW student, faculty or staff, bring your UW ID card as it will give you, I recall a 10% discount (which is not dealing with the 9.5% sales tax). 4. If you're looking to rid some used parts in hopes of using your pennies of store credit towards something else in the store, they may be of some help. Keep in mind, you might think your fork is worth 20 emotional dollars now but expect like next to nothing but I actually respect the low balling since I couldn't sell my stuff on Craigslist or eBay for that price. 5. If you don't know what you're looking for, just bring in the bike or the part. 6. You can many times get a bunch of used reflectors for your bike for free. Sales floor: 1. I feel that the price of the used bikes reflects how well they've refurbished the bike itself than what you'd find on eBay or Craigslist. The pre-owned bikes do feel new and in fact better than the department store assembly jobs you see at Fred Meyer, Target or Dick's Sporting Goods. I think the pricing is on the higher end but the refurb is immaculate. If they're rebuilding the front/rear suspensions (if applicable) on these bikes, well...then yeah, it's immaculate. 2. Selection is good for commuters, cycling enthusiasts and around entry level competitive cyclists but don't go in thinking they've got $5K carbon spec'd machines everywhere. 3. Apparel and accessory selection is more so suited towards cycling commuters. Service: 1. It's stupid good in the technical knowledge department of new and vintage. Some of the shop guys are very, very comfortable doing a rear end linkage rebuild on a vintage MTB. 2. Turn around time is within a few days. Make sure you make an appointment as they have a lot of clientele that just floods them. If Recycled Cycles could only slightly reduce the price on their used parts such as the saddles and forks for example and ace down their special order inquiries (I was let down by the inability or desire to help me figure out how to purchase a Raleigh Skarn MTB while Alpine Hut in Seattle's Interbay and Las Vegas Bikes in Nevada reached out and found one. Didn't work out as Raleigh's customer service department is horrible and also their MTB racing teams have quite a few riders that are snooty). Overall, good place for used and sometimes obsolete parts. Great place for tune-ups. It's the 27.5/650b of bike shops. read more

For the summer of 2013 - I was heavily interested in getting a bike for the summer - so I needed to start my research somewhere on getting a bike. After understanding all of the various bike types out there, I've decided on getting a hybrid bicycle. After being told by one of my friends that this place allows bike rentals, I had to stop by and start renting bikes to give them a feel. It's been a long while since I've used a bike - as the last bike I used only had two gears, and had caliber brakes and reflectors, nothing like today's bike with 27 gears, hydraulic disk brakes, LED flashers and pneumatic shock absorbers...! Wow...! It's a lot of motorcycle technology on a push bike. In any regard, renting a bicycle does help out a lot in determining what kind of bicycle I should purchase, it's a great way of learning what bicycles today now feature, and what to look for, such as the size of bicycle. One thing that stuck in my mind is the service that these representatives had; they are all genuinely happy to help people, from counter sales, floor sales, and the service counter, everyone is happy and had a true earnest to assist me and everyone else for that matter. While it is a bit more hectic during warmer days, the sales representatives assisted everyone the same way. All of the sales representatives that I spoke to or observed knew of technical information about various bike types, but also gave tips on using bikes, or various helmet styles, bike accessories, and with other customers, offered biking directions/routes to various locations around the area, even told people where to park where it's free to park for no time limit (further west on NE Northlake Way, past I-5, reverse angle parking on right hand side if driving west. 10 minute walking distance) Alas, I wasn't able to purchase a used bicycle (I have no need to get a brand new one), as I was practically gone for two months out of the summer for my career, but I'll be looking towards Recycled Cycles in the future to get a bike. Note, considering where they are located - which is near the Lake Union Loop, renting a cycle, and biking the Lake Union Loop during the warm days is a perfect way of spending the day, and there's various places to stop and get a bite to eat or drink on that loop. read more

I really want to like this place as it's a local shop and in a great location but I had to stop in there to fill my bike tires up with air and I was sadly disappointed and extremely irritated when I left the shop. I am a non-biker, everything about screams you don't know what you are doing and I am well aware of that. I ride my bike to work and that's it. So I was on my way to work and both my tires needed air so I swung in there. I ask the one guy where the pumps are, no words just points to where they are at. I am fumbling around with them and another employee tells me it's a duel pump, whatever that means. I ask him to show me where on the tire it shows how much air and he says somewhere on there, well no kidding thank you. I think he picks up on my irritation and comes over to show me but has to point out how dirty my tires are. I tell him I know I need a tune up and a cleaning. He says, well you could probably clean it yourself. Me: yeah I could but I would rather pay someone to do it. Him: yeah I see that. Ok so he finds the number and says "you aren't 300 lbs are you?" Me: " actually 299 what difference does it make?" He shut his mouth and told me the number to fill it too. Never again will I go here. Don't ask some women if they weigh 300 lbs, help when asked and just do the job you are suppose to, not stand around with your co-workers and shoot the breeze. I got to work, told all my co-workers and told them to spread the word. read more

If there was an opportunity to list ZERO stars, I would be. My experience at this store was very similar to the one listed below. I walked into the store excited about purchasing a bike and walked out feeling stupid and like I should have been more knowledgeable before even entering their pretentious establishment .The customer service rep who met me at the front entrance made it known that she had no time for any of my questions and the comments that she did make to me were berating and ignorant. Isn't that the point of going to a bike store, to learn from an expert? To ask questions and purchase the right bike? isn't that your job! I walked away feeling totally disheartened and instead made my way to Gregg's Cycles, where their staff couldn't spend enough time with me. I ended up spending over $1200 on a new bike and gear and continually go back. RC should take a lesson from Gregg's as to what real customer service is about. I will never step foot in RC again nor will I recommend them to anyone,Instead, I will be sharing my negative experience with as many people as possible. read more

Amazing service. Reasonable prices. I needed to reassemble two bicycles I had brought up when I moved into Seattle but I wasn't too excited about the quotes I had received at other shops. A mechanic here gave me a competitive quote and then suggested that he would lower the price even further if the bike came in partly assembled. I bought my bike years ago at Recycled Cycles, so I thought I would give them a call about having it tuned up and updated. I called in to get a quote and had a specific list of things I wanted done. I knew the parts I wanted. Andy answered and brushed me off, saying I could look at the packages on their website or bring the bike in. It isn't all that convenient to haul your bike around town for quotes, so I pressed him and asked if some of the specific tasks I wanted done, like replacing the brake and shifter cables and housings would be included in these 2 packages he thought I would need. Nope. So basically he couldn't be troubled to get me an accurate quote on the work I wanted done. I would think in this economy Recycled Cycles would be interested in more business, but apparently they are not. The whole experience was underwhelming and I am taking my bike to Alpine Hut where the staff was happy to price out the work I wanted. Moral of the story: Recycled Cycles has enough customers and can't be bothered to give basic information to new potential customers or former customers. read more

I wish all bike shops were like Recycled Cycles' Boat Street location. This place is a bicycle lover's paradise, run by real 'bikies'. Too many bike shops are corporate in feel and attitude - they are just moving units, and interested only in selling new, not fixing old.. These places often do not want to repair bikes, especially true with brands they do not carry. Not at Recycled Cycles. The friendly staff, their attitudes and the atmosphere of the place have made it my go-to place for all things bike. I LOVE shopping here. The overhead vintage bikes (mostly not for sale) are pure two-wheeled coolness, and remind me of my life-long love of bicycles and cycling. I appreciate the bins of used parts for sale, and, kudos to them, some old parts are available for free. Recycled Cycles is much more than a bike shop- it is a community resource. read more

I really like Recycled Cycles. This year I finally decided to buy a new bike after funneling money in to my old beater for years. I felt a lot less intimidated by the female saleswomen there, who were knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. And they even ask me about how I like my bike when I go there, months later. They took my old bike off my hands and gave me some money for it, then (hopefully) took off the usable parts. It was good to know that it was not just going to the dump. I am happy to be a patron of their store, and go there anytime I need bike supplies. I will say, however, that I think it is very unfortunate that SO MANY bike shops in this city seem to have terrible customer service ratings. I do not appreciate how some people seem to think biking is an elitist activity, when really people just want to avoid automobiles and enjoy riding their bikes. For a city that is noted as being so "bike friendly", it would be nice if the people who sell and service bikes could fall in that category. In sum, I have had great luck with the service at Recycled Cycles, and am really sad that others have not. It would be nice if that could change. read more

The bike was in great condition, worked perfectly and included helmet, lock, and spare tire kit just incase we had a flat. I came in yesterday to buy a new helmet and replace a part on my bike that was stolen off of my bike a while ago (damn dorm bastards). Anyways, I walk around like a noob and I go to the back desk and ask for this certain part. The man comes all the way outside to look at my bike to the appropriate piece and then comes back in and grabs it. He put it on my bike and adjusted it perfectly... didn't even charge me for it (although it was a very small insignificant piece). Then the other guy at the front desk helped me choose out a brand new helmet. Awesome. The repair shop looked over my bike for safety, made adjustments to my rear wheel, and even took the time to explain the shifting system to me. Not I my that but mechanic did all that free of charge! I bought my used bike here about 7 months ago, and I really love the shop. I started afraid to deal with a bike shop (oh, the tales of elitism), but I always feel welcome. It's nice that while salespeople are always helpful and informative, I never feel like they're trying to "sell" me something. The selection of women's clothing is pretty small, and the shop tends to cater mostly to men, but everyone is helpful, welcoming, and ready with recommendations of where else to go for women's clothing (Hub and Bespoke, or just REI). This is an overdue review that seems gush-y, but I've been recommending the shop to a bunch of people lately, so it seemed Yelp-appropriate. Enjoy, and happy biking! I wish I could give them a lower rating. I went there with my friend who was interested in purchasing a used road bike. She had 2 simple criteria: 1. It had to fit. 2. It had to be priced under $350. After waiting a while (long enough to realise we'd been waiting a while) someone finally came to help her. It took about 15 minutes for her to convince him that she didn't want to spend more than $350. Finally he suggested a used bike with a 50cm frame. This doesn't seem out of line for most women but she is 5'10" with fairly average torso height/leg length. The way he spoke to us made it sound like he was absolutely convinced that this was the best size possible for her. Long story short the bike was way too small for her when she test rode it and despite this fact the salesman was adamant that she buy it. I don't know why you would want to shop at a place that tried to pass off poorly fitting gear to you. read more

Mediocre bike selection, mediocre service. I went in to find a steel-framed commuter bike in the $500-$1000 price range and found nothing to match my needs. Instead, I found a bunch of entry level stuff for less than $400 and a bunch of high end stuff for around $1500. To top it off, I had to wait for nearly an hour before I could flag down a salesperson to help me (and I went on a Monday , fer chrissakes). They do have the trade in service, which was a nice way to finally get rid of the bike I wrecked three months ago. However, the mechanics are so disorganized I had to wait an hour in line to accomplish the trade in task as well. I do not recommend coming here unless you have a great deal of time and a deep well of patience to complement it. read more

It's always nice to look through the parts bins, and they are very well stocked behind the counter with problem solvers bits and pieces. But mechanic service is hit or miss and the floor staff is either uninterested or uninformed or both. Example 1: Bought a new bike (to their credit they were quite helpful at getting me the size with the right amount of reach) which came with Truvativ external BB and cranks. 50 miles later, the left crank falls off (it was incorrectly assembled). Brought it in, the mechanic threw a new crank bolt on, as I watch him NOT grease the splines or bolt and NOT use a torque wrench to reinstall. As I learn later, this is exactly what you do with Truvativ GXP cranks if you want to ruin the left hand crank so that after the warranty period's up it refuses to stay attached for longer than 100 miles. Example 2: Needed a replacement part for my Sora shift levers. Shimano has a parts diagram for the levers on their website; the parts diagram doubles as an order form, the levers are still being manufactured, and all a shop needs to do is put the part number on your next order through QBP. I know all of this before going into the shop; the service counter staff looks at me like I'm from Mars, repeats the mantra that you can't repair STI levers, points at a $180 replacement complete lever set, does not notice that it's one part that is the same for all Shimano road brake levers, and wanders off to try and move more Kona Dews. I find an identical part in a brake lever in the used parts bin and leave. So, good selection of new bikes and parts, good location, too bad about the staff. read more

Candy store from bicycle heaven! I enjoy doing my own repairs, and I count on used bikes to be cheap because they are a little rough around the edges, so this place isn't exactly my style. Every bike in there seems to be completely overhauled if it's used. I understand that they flip bikes pretty readily. They even have some pretty high-end overhauled vintage bikes that are more expensive than expected. They sell a lot of new bikes too. So, if you don't want to deal with all of the not-so-shiny bikes on Craigslist, I highly recommend this place. All of that said, if you DO like to fix bikes, they have many toy-boxes full of used parts, including vintage parts. You'll have to rifle through them, but they are more organized than some shops. read more
