I came here to get a bike rack for my Trek 7.2 FX bike -- I'd had trouble with some racks I'd gotten in the past because the attachment rails weren't long enough to connect it to the frame. Darian helped me look through multiple options, and when the rack I ended up buying also didn't fit (apparently the attachments on my frame are unusually spaced out), he stayed 30 minutes after work to help troubleshoot. The large bins of used parts would be enough to recommend Recycled Cycles, but the great staff and decent new and used bike selection put it over the top. If there is any work or parts I need for my rides, this is the first place I stop without hesitation. I can't count how many diamond-in-the-rough old parts I've been able to salvage in their store, often at $5 a piece. Not only that, but they're happy to give tips on installation and fitting, and have gone beyond the call by digging around with me to find compatible components. They're new stuff is great too - everything from fixed-gear and tandem bikes to racing jerseys. They lack a few of the odder-assortments like colored brake lines or top-tube protectors, but if they don't have it, they will always recommend a local shop in town to find it. Three times they've sent me to small shops on Capitol Hill and I found exactly what I was looking for every time. They staff obviously loves bikes, and are happy and willing to share their knowledge with customers. While it's not as trendy as a few shops in town, they know about all of them and are more helpful than any I've found. Very highly recommended. read more

This is my new favorite bike shop. I rolled in with my vintage Schwinn looking for a fender. I wanted a cheap one! They didn't give me any shit for that. They helped me figure out what size I needed and then managed to dig out a used brown back fender that matches the color of my frame almost exactly. Magic! AND they put it on for me. I enjoyed hanging out behind the counter watching the bike mechanic put the fender on and chitty chatting. He also looked over my bike for me, cleaned the chain, filled the tires, gave me tips on simple maintenance. Then I dug through the used parts bins and found some reflectors and a handlebar cap, which another awesome guy in the shop helped me put on. He also helped me solve the problem of how to attach my back light better. I am super impressed with how much these guys care about making my bike trips around the city more safe and comfortable. read more

This place is great for bike nerds and DIYers. They have well stocked used parts bins and I've always had good luck finding the random bits I need. They have new stuff too if you can't find what you're looking for, or it's a consumable or accessory you're best off getting new anyways. The mechanics are very knowledgeable and helpful. Today was exceptional, I needed some parts to build up a tandem and they found me everything I needed and then some, including a Campy cassette for another bike that would have cost me easily double to order online. I brought in an oddball v-brake that they had never seen before (yeah, very oddball) and the mechanic mounted it to a fork to test it out and we figured out how it works. This place is perfect for the u-district. It's a mixed bag of new and used bikes and parts with a large price range. The place is pretty well organize with one end being for sales and the other for repairs. I came in with my vintage Raleigh the other day with a stripped crank set and needed a replacement. Although the guy who i asked for help out with at the counter seemed to be having a bad or at least really disliked the hot weather, he was more than happy to help and i really appreciated it. Since my bike is so old and a Raleigh, it's supposedly very difficult to find a replacement crank set, something many different people have told me. Regardless, the sales guy bustled around the store trying to work out a solution for my problem. Even though they charge about 60 bucks (or so the price board says) to work on a bike, plus parts, a couple of guys ended up spending about an 40 minutes on my bike and hardly charged me anything, they were just glad they were able to scrape together the seemingly impossible to find parts that i needed. On top of that, without my saying anything, after a mechanic fixed my crank set, he also greased up my chain and fixed my brakes. The point here is that, Recycled Cycles seems to be a place that cares that people have the proper equipment they need to safely ride their bikes. Although they deserve it, the feeling i got is that making a profit isn't their number one goal, getting people on their bikes is. read more

I am back here a second time in 2 months. They gave me an almost brand new Xtracycle and installed it beautifully, including new bottom bracket, cranks, front deraileur , front disc brake upgrade, chain and rear sprockets. They even made my horn from the Bikesmith Val work better than ever. It no longer gets waterlogged. They made a custom mount for it. Just returned from a three week visit in Seattle. Rented a road bike at Recycled Cycles for a week, and it was great. Great communication with Andy from the shop prior to my arrival. Found the staff to be helpful, patient and professional. Thanks Ben. The first bike I took was too small, and they swapped bikes without a problem. Charlie (I hope I remember the name) the mechanic did a good job setting my bike according to my measurements I brought from home, and swapping the pedals. They were helpful, though could have been better, in pointing me out to paths to ride in the city. Ended up returning the bike a day early, and got refunded by the full daily rental rate, while they could have refunded pro-rata by the discounted weekly rate. Great shop, with all the used parts you can think of, at excellent prices. While the road bike rental rate is one of the better in Seattle (other places wanted over $60 a day), $180/week (+taxes) is still high. Other places go as low as $150 a week, though unfortunately did not have my sizing. And yes, Seattle is an awesome place for cycling. Staff and employees are both approachable and professional. They are personable and build great rapport with their customers. They are also very accommodating and open to answer and any and all of your questions. He is knowledgeable and very thorough when it comes to making sure he understand the questions you are asking, that you are asking key questions and make you feel comfortable before making a purchase. It will speak the the inner person who longs for garage sale type shopping and the "barneys" crowd of bikes. I can find parts for my classic Peugeot road bike and some parts for my latest downhill monster. There is a great mix of riders that work there, some young and learning others with a bit more wisdom. Most of the riders seem to be of the road/cross crowd but there are a few true rippers of the dirt that work there. Was there this weekend to upgrade an old bike but saw the price of a new Diamond Back hardtail and could not pass up the deal. VERY happy with the transaction and the free tune up after 90 days of riding is a very nice thing. Also for 30 days any parts we buy will be installed for FREE LABOR!!! The bike was everything needed up thats a great deal. I tend to install my own parts but I have no shame letting someone else do it. read more

They had a nice space and a lot of nice bikes but it wasn't quite what I had expected. First of all there were very few "recycled" bicycles and since that's what we had gone there for it was a little bit of a let down (especially given the name of the place). This also put the bikes that they did have out of our price range. The other thing was, since we went there on a summer weekend, it was quite busy and difficult to get much help from the staff. Had we wanted a new bike, more money and wasn't so miss led by the name I probably would've been more impressed. Besides all that it seems like a good all around bike shop. read more

My bike shop of choice, as every time I've been down there with a problem, it's been taken care of for me in short order. Granted, there are still issues with my bike - but, like they say in the restaurant industry, "If you start off with shit, it doesn't matter how you prepare it, you still have shit." I've got a Raleigh M20 mountain bike that has definitely seen better days. I've been hit by one car and slammed into another car that pulled out in front of me. So, like I said, it's seen better days. But repairs have been done in what I would consider a decent amount of time, even if they were somewhat expensive - however, expensive is in the eye of the beholder. A $500 repair bill might be a staggering sum for some, while others might not even bat an eye. Either way... It's not a bad place to go, if you have some knowledge of bikes. If you don't, it's probably not the best place, but have some patience and you can probably walk out of there ahead of the game. read more

I am one of those yelpers that tends to review only the extremes - the v best, or the g.d. worst. Plus add some laziness and you get maybe one review every two years. Whoops. The Boat Street location of Recycled Cycles merits one such review: these guys - and I mean 100% of the staff, whoever is working on whichever day - are consistently friendly and helpful. I'm not a gearhead (but boy, would I like to be) so I often go into shops like this intimidated as I often don't even know the right questions to ask... and these guys are just super nice and non-judgey and I always leave having learned something AND with the right gear. I have been a loyal patron for going on 6 years. I have never been treated badly, although I have had to wait multiple times for service, but c'mon, good things are worth waiting for. The staff has always been accommodating, willing & able to provide my bikes with service (when other shops have scheduled me two weeks out for a 10 minute wheel truing!). The used parts bins here are always changing stock & bound to have a surprise waiting to be found. New bikes? Yeah they have those too. We just purchased a new Raleigh here for effectively half the price of an equitable bike from another shop/manufacturer. read more

Great shop. When I came in with a last minute fix that I needed to finish asap, they found time to squeeze in my request (press bearings into my frame) and got me on my way within minutes. Also when I needed service on my fork and shock, they pointed me to a shop that could address the amount of neglect (I mean maintenance) that it needed. I appreciate a shop that is willing to say, 'you'd be better served here' rather than work on something that they are not properly setup for. Recycled Cycles has always been good with helping the uber cyclist as well as the novice. I now start with them when I have a cycling related issue that I'm unable to solve myself. The last review was a little shakey, but after pricing around a basic check up on my bike, I decided to go to Recycled Cycle. Their basic tune up is $50 + parts, which in my case included a new rear cassette and chain. I'm a complete bike novice, and was just given an old mountain bike from my dad (a bike nut) so it came as no surprise he had jimmy rigged an 8 speed gear shifter onto a 7 gear cassette. All this was explained to me by the guy when I checked it in, and how much it would cost. When I went to pick it up, it the total cost was a bit under what I was quoted. I also needed a new seat, and one of the employees helped me pick out a post and just swap it with the one I brought in which didn't fit no matter what I did. He hooked up my seat right there in the store, I got a cheap seat, and now I have a bike to ride around Seattle in. Overall, the customer service was hit and miss, most of the employees seemed to be running around avoiding eye contact with people, but they were in the middle of helping someone else. The one gentlmen who helped me (I can't remember his name) was very friendly and helpful, and while in line I noticed he was helping many other people with basic bike maintenance questions. Can be hard to find, but worth the find for some good used selection and bike maintenance. Good prices. read more

They were knowledgeable about their bikes but you have to ask lots of questions as they will not give up any information without a little prodding (especially for a newbie like me who hasn't bought a bike since 1995) but once you get them talking you can learn about the various kinds of bikes they sell. And how to choose a proper one. I went to a few different shops. I had it narrowed down to two bikes and either shop would have worked. Great great great shop. I've spent quite a bit of money here, and I've always found that I get my money's worth. The people that work here know what they're talking about and they treat me like a human being, which is kind of a rarity in bike shops. This is a shop that caters to the everyman, rather than the million dollar tri-racer superhero. They have a great selection of quality goods for normal people with normal salaries. They also have a ton of used stuff, which is great for a parts-bin digger like myself. I built up an old Klein frame into a SS MTB solely using parts that I got out of the used bins here and I'm sure that I spent less than $100. Even if you don't actually need anything, it's very easy to walk out of the store with something that you found in the bins. This can be a bad thing at some stores, but you usually only leave $5-10 in their till as you walk out. Nice. Their prices on new stuff is also pretty damn competitive also. They often come close to internet prices on everything. I'm definitely swinging down for my Cross Check when I get off of my ass and buy it. Kudos to this place. It's the best shop I've ever set foot in. read more

I came here after trying about 10 bike shops in the area...I don't know why it took me so long, I guess I just figured they wouldn't have many to choose from in my size because I'm so short. And while they didn't have a ton in my size, they did have a pretty decent selection and one I fell in love with right off the bat. The guy was so helpful that even though it was a little more than I wanted to spend, I decided it was worth it because of the awesome bike and the awesome service. When I went to Gregg's, the people looked annoyed that I was asking for help. Here, a guy named Andy helped me, and he didn't give me the "oh brother" look when I said I didn't know much about bikes, but explained things to me thoroughly in terms I understood without being condescending (which is one of my biggest pet peeves, and that alone will make me go elsewhere). They were meticulous about checking everything over to fit my short stubby body (my words, not theirs). They had me jump on it again and again to test everything to make sure it fit me perfectly and told me to bring it back asap if something felt weird, where they'd adjust it/ fix it at no charge. Plus, any accessories you buy within 30 days of buying the bike are installed free, which is a plus because I need some soon. I already told my boyfriend to give them his business, and now I'm telling you. Just go already. read more

Just returned from my second visit. These guys (and gals!) are great. I agree, the service isn't 'HI! Can I help you?!' - but nowawdays what place is besides timeshare condos? Anyway, whenever I've asked for help, they've always been great. I bought my second bike here and they've been great to help me (a novice!) get smart. I've never felt like they were 'too cool' to help me. While I was there, they seem to draw a wide range of bikers, from families with kids getting their first bike, to hard core messengers and fixies. Seems like a good sign that they have something for everyone, and get a lot of repeat business. Not only do they have a great selection of new and used bikes, but it's one of the few places I've heard of that has used parts and clothing as well. Makes this hobby way more affordable. read more

A friend of mine took me here the first day I moved to Seattle to pick up some parts for a single speed he was working on. Judging by the line of customers to the shop area, and by the speed the queue moved, you could sense these cats don't mess around. Great service, fast, friendly, and very knowledgeable. Now that I commute to work on two wheels, I needed to get some necessary gear for the wet conditions. Front fender especially. After shopping in Capitol Hill for parts due to convenience, I wasn't happy with the fender selection (due to my front suspension) or the prices. I decided to make the trip to RC's. I prepared by calling ahead to see if they could muster up an affordable solution. Greg answered my call and told me they could. 5 minutes after arriving and talking to Greg, my bike was on the lift. Two seasoned pro's creatively worked in tandem on my custom fender, and got the job done before I had a chance to peruse the impressive selection of new and used gear. How much for the parts and labor? I asked...Five bucks?...You gotta be kidding me. read more

This is my kind of shop! The staff (especially the mechanics in back) really know their stuff, and will give you honest advice and guidance if you spell out your wants and needs. For those who have to have all new stuff, they have that, too, but the heart of the operation is their recycling. They've got bins of used parts at great prices -- great for the DIYer or if you just need one of something like a brake lever. Of course, you need to be able to figure out which parts are good quality and how much life they have left in them, but it gives you that dumpster-diving bargain high without the mess of climbing through actual dumpsters. Disposable gloves or some handi-wipes for afterwards will deal with the "bike mechanic" look your hands will end up sporting. They are also big on store credit. If you've got parts (or a whole bike) that you don't need, ask the guys at the service area how much store credit they'll give you for them. Then, use that credit to give yourself a discount on one of their amazing custom-built wheels (which are a good deal even without the store credit). Novices often don't appreciate how important it is to have a well-built and properly adjusted wheel. As others have mentioned, there's often a wait if you want help from an employee; be prepared for this and spend your wait checking out the parts bins, the hanging bikes or whatever else floats your boat. read more

This is one of my favorite local shops in seattle and I still go out of my way to head over there once in a while. The thing is, this place seems to be trying to be two stores. One for brand spanking new bikes and accesories, and another for wide selection of new and cheap used parts, and a shop with helpful mechanics. neither of them are bad but sometimes it seems like the two don't quite mesh exactly. That said, these are some of the friendliest mechanics in the city and aren't afraid to give a little free advice or wrench something for you that only takes them a second but would take you a lot of time and money/tools to do. they aren't always trying to upsell you something but they'll give an honest opinion if something needs to be replaced, and they'll probably have something around to get you on the road. they have a *ton* of used parts so you can usually find something you need to get your bike going. you probably won't find anything *too* nice in the used section, but i've brought stuff in for store credit enough to walk out with a different handful of parts and not have spent a dime. read more

I have been here many times in the past year, whether it be for my boyfriends project bikes, or my project bikes, it is the place to go for good, used parts and sales people that know and love bikes The mechanics in the back are always really helpful and tend to charge lower labor prices, which is always fantastic. They also make conversation and seem to love their job. I love how they have a stolen bikes list, so they keep an eye out for bikes that have been stolen around the area. Using this feature, I called to report my recently stolen bike. The girl who answered the phone was very short and rude. I was put off instantly, because considering how much all of them seem to love bikes, I thought she would be a little more sympathetic. When I told her I didn't have the serial number, she sighed, "Let me get to somewhere where I can write down the description then" And put me on hold. Now, I would have been totally fine with that, I understand if she was busy or in an awkward spot, but she was rude. When she came back on the phone, probs a minute later, she continued to be short, rude and uncaring, and didn't even take down a full description of my bike. She seemed to genuinely dislike her job or just seem to be having a horrible day. I have noticed that the guys who work there seem to be more happy, helpful and nice, definitely more so than the girls. Basically, this place is fantastic for labor, parts, general questions, and low prices. If you are looking for a whole new bike to buy, or even a frame, that's going to be much more expensive, as I have only seen extremely nice or new bikes there. I would whole-heartedly recommend RC, but maybe just steer toward the men a bit, and be very adamant and clear about what you want. read more

I bought my Raleigh Capri 2.0 new here and later my boyfriend bought his bike (a carbon frame racing bike, forget the brand at the moment) used here on my recommendation. I've also bought apparel and accessories here. I've interacted with the bike technicians to ask questions about bike maintenance and to have my rack installed. Pros: * The bike sales experience is top-notch. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. They let me test ride bikes for as long as I wanted (with my ID as collateral) and did not rush me into making a decision. * I am satisfied with the bike I bought. It is the right fit for me to ride comfortably and fits my needs for recreation and commuting. * After installing the rack I had bought, one of the technicians in the back taught me how to clean and grease my chain for no charge. * My new bike came with a credit for a free tune-up. After 14 months, I'm almost ready to redeem the tune-up. * Nice, long hours in the summer. I was passing by a few minutes after closing one night and noticed them opening the already closed doors and offering service to customers. Cons: * Hard to think of any cons... they don't sell headlights that are bright enough to ride on an unlit trail, but then again, I haven't found a bricks and mortar bike shop in town that sells them. I went back in a month later and was again disrepected, "Sup man" when I entered and told they could not guarantee the tube they had installed like they had said. I won't be going back.... read more

I didn't want to buy an extremely expensive bike, but I still wanted quality, so I went to Recycled Cycles to look for a used road bike. I know it was the beginning of summer, but they had nothing! I am 5'4" and they had no bikes that would fit me, and they had barely any larger bikes either. One of the staff members offered to show me some new bikes, but the lowest grade road bike they had was $700 and I knew I could find a better deal, either online or at a different used bicycle store. I ended up just buying a new helmet, but left disappointed by their low selection, disengaged staff, and slow service.
