I bought lights, fenders and used toe clips and since it wasn't too busy, one guy spent 15 minutes finding the right nuts and bolts for me to attach the toe clips. Thanks! read more

This is my new favorite bike shop. I rolled in with my vintage Schwinn looking for a fender. I wanted a cheap one! They didn't give me any shit for that. They helped me figure out what size I needed and then managed to dig out a used brown back fender that matches the color of my frame almost exactly. Magic! AND they put it on for me. I enjoyed hanging out behind the counter watching the bike mechanic put the fender on and chitty chatting. He also looked over my bike for me, cleaned the chain, filled the tires, gave me tips on simple maintenance. Then I dug through the used parts bins and found some reflectors and a handlebar cap, which another awesome guy in the shop helped me put on. He also helped me solve the problem of how to attach my back light better. I am super impressed with how much these guys care about making my bike trips around the city more safe and comfortable. read more

Recycled Cycles - My bike - Bikes Near Me - Seattle, Washington

Was on my evening commute the other night, noticed something funky with my crankset so I swung by their shop to see if I could drop it off for repair. The guy at the counter said "well, let me take a quick look" -- popped it off, replaced a few things, and sent me on my merry way, charging only for the parts. You can tell the people here just love bikes, as their expertise is clear, all with super friendly service. I'll definitely use them again for future service and sales read more

This place is great for bike nerds and DIYers. They have well stocked used parts bins and I've always had good luck finding the random bits I need. They have new stuff too if you can't find what you're looking for, or it's a consumable or accessory you're best off getting new anyways. The mechanics are very knowledgeable and helpful. Today was exceptional, I needed some parts to build up a tandem and they found me everything I needed and then some, including a Campy cassette for another bike that would have cost me easily double to order online. I brought in an oddball v-brake that they had never seen before (yeah, very oddball) and the mechanic mounted it to a fork to test it out and we figured out how it works. Before you scour eBay and Craigslist check out Recycled Cycles. read more

This review is specifically related to our experience working with Chad at Recycled Cycles. I know quite a bit about bikes, but my boyfriend was in the market for his first road bike - and I wanted him to work with a pro. We set aside an entire day to visit bike shops, with the expectation that we'd have to really search for someone who would take the time to properly fit him, make recommendations, and to find the right bike. We walked into Recycled Cycles, and after browsing for a bit, started talking with Chad. He carefully listened to our plans (riding around Seattle, short commute, but also taking long training rides for a future tour in France), explained frames and fit to my boyfriend, and started to make recommendations based on both budget and need. He did a fit assessment, and sent my boyfriend out on test rides. After finding a bike that fit, Chad walked us through the pros (better performance, better gearing) and cons (price) of selecting the more expensive model and components. He was great at translating gear speak into layman's terms, and my boyfriend left with both a new bike and a better understanding of how his bike performed, how to take care of it, and the fit. The Boat Street store didn't have the right size in stock, so Chad called ahead to the Fremont store to get the bike set up. We drove over and left with the bike within an hour. Instead of spending the whole day hunting for a bike, we spent the afternoon riding the Burke. Fantastic service! As a caveat: We live near the Fremont store and have occasionally dropped in for help or other add-ons (fenders, lights, etc). Service there great, but bike selection-wise, go see Chad and the University crew first. read more

Totally exceptional knowledge and service, way above and beyond. I needed new tires, fenders, and a rack for my touring bike; my old shop closed a bit ago, and I was in the market for a new neighborhood bike store. Not only did the folks at Recycled Cycles set me up with all the gear I needed, but when I mentioned that budget was a factor, they went out of their way to source me with good quality, mostly used parts. I got out of there with about half the bill I'd expected. They helped me cut costs by installing most of it myself, with the opportunity to ask them questions and get my work checked. I think I was there for the better part of two hours, and they were totally patient, even with some fairly novice questions. John taught me to change my tires, and spent about twice as long with me explaining things as he would have if he'd just done it himself, and now I can change bike tires! Alexander helped troubleshoot my installation of fenders and a back rack. Both of them were exceptionally patient, helpful, and informative. I realize I should mention: I called ahead before I did this, so please don't go in assuming that they always have time to do this, based on this review. Assisted installations aren't a formal service they offer--there are places (like Cascade Bicycle Club) that can also teach you how to maintain and repair your bike. I called in and asked if they could teach me how to change the tires, and they said they'd be happy to, if I came in at a slow time. The rest of it was only possible because of timing and customer flow, so adjust your expectations accordingly. A quick observation, as I was in the store for some time, working on my bike: the folks at Recycled Cycles treat each other with a high level of professionalism and respect, even when they're goofing around. Bring that same respect to the table when you come in here, and you'll have an experience that is truly out of this world. read more

I'm the second generation in my family to frequent Recycled Cycles, and there's good reason for that. I'll write about a recent experience that sums up why I love Recycled Cycles. I recently bought a new to me Felt Verza City hybrid bike via Craigslist and immediately brought it into Recycled Cycles for a tune-up and to get some accessories. The fellows in the repair shop took a look at the bike and then showed me what it needed and explained why. They mentioned that my chain would need replacing at some point, but said it didn't need to be replaced yet. That's a good example of how Recylced Cycles doesn't try and upsell me. A sales associate helped me pick a rack and fenders. Once I had those selected, the fellow from the repair shop gave me a quote for the work he planned to do and installing the accessories. This was on a Sunday afternoon, and he estimated that they'd have my bike done by Thursday. I got a call on Tuesday saying it was done, but the shop could also hold onto it until later in the week (which was actually helpful). I appreciated the fast and honest service. I ended up deciding to trade-in to Recycled Cycles the road bike I was replacing with my new hybrid. I brought my old bike into the shop, and a mechanic confirmed the trade-in value that a different mechanic had given me a month earlier when I'd first started shopping for a new bike and knew my old one would have to go. The mechanic then helped me transfer accessories like my pump holder, lock mount, and Cateye from the old bike I was trading-in to my new bike. I'd been planning on doing these things myself, but I really appreciated the professional help - it was great to ride away with my new bike all set up and outfitted. I wanted to use the saddle from my old bike on my new one, and doing that required a different seat post. The mechanic helped me find one from one of the used bins, and when he rang me up for the work on my new-to-me hybrid, he threw in the seat post for free. That was a lot of detail, but it captures my experience every time I've come into Recycled Cycles - the staff are helpful, don't upsell you, explain what your bike needs and why if you're having repairs done, give you helpful info about retail products, and get repair work and tune-ups done by the date they promise or before. Lastly, I like that Recycled Cycles gives used bikes and parts new lives. It helps cut down on waste and helps people get on bikes in an affordable way. I will happily keep spending my money at this local business! read more

This place is perfect for the u-district. It's a mixed bag of new and used bikes and parts with a large price range. The place is pretty well organize with one end being for sales and the other for repairs. I came in with my vintage Raleigh the other day with a stripped crank set and needed a replacement. Although the guy who i asked for help out with at the counter seemed to be having a bad or at least really disliked the hot weather, he was more than happy to help and i really appreciated it. Since my bike is so old and a Raleigh, it's supposedly very difficult to find a replacement crank set, something many different people have told me. Regardless, the sales guy bustled around the store trying to work out a solution for my problem. Even though they charge about 60 bucks (or so the price board says) to work on a bike, plus parts, a couple of guys ended up spending about an 40 minutes on my bike and hardly charged me anything, they were just glad they were able to scrape together the seemingly impossible to find parts that i needed. On top of that, without my saying anything, after a mechanic fixed my crank set, he also greased up my chain and fixed my brakes. The point here is that, Recycled Cycles seems to be a place that cares that people have the proper equipment they need to safely ride their bikes. Although they deserve it, the feeling i got is that making a profit isn't their number one goal, getting people on their bikes is. read more

I am back here a second time in 2 months. They gave me an almost brand new Xtracycle and installed it beautifully, including new bottom bracket, cranks, front deraileur , front disc brake upgrade, chain and rear sprockets. They even made my horn from the Bikesmith Val work better than ever. It no longer gets waterlogged. They made a custom mount for it. I am a returning customer to Recycled Cycles because of a very positive experience I had working with Chad a little over a year ago. This week I returned to inquire about a new bike that may suit my needs better. Poor Darien had to answer the 300 million questions I had and literally walk me through every model on the floor before I was willing to make the purchase. His thorough answers to my endless questions and never waning friendliness made me feel confident in his knowledge and great in my decision of which bike was right for me. Since the purchase, I've had to return three days in a row for minor adjustments (none of which were anyone's fault). While I was frustrated because I just wanted my new bike to be flawless and ready to ride, the shop staff has been more than accommodating, friendly and easy to work with. Perhaps my favorite thing about Recycled Cycles and the thing that separates them from many other bike shops I have been to, is the personal touch. Aside from being knowledgeable, the staff is hilarious and fun... and they even offer some really cool things like custom painted cages, water bottles, etc... read more

Just returned from a three week visit in Seattle. Rented a road bike at Recycled Cycles for a week, and it was great. Great communication with Andy from the shop prior to my arrival. Found the staff to be helpful, patient and professional. Thanks Ben. The first bike I took was too small, and they swapped bikes without a problem. Charlie (I hope I remember the name) the mechanic did a good job setting my bike according to my measurements I brought from home, and swapping the pedals. They were helpful, though could have been better, in pointing me out to paths to ride in the city. Ended up returning the bike a day early, and got refunded by the full daily rental rate, while they could have refunded pro-rata by the discounted weekly rate. Great shop, with all the used parts you can think of, at excellent prices. While the road bike rental rate is one of the better in Seattle (other places wanted over $60 a day), $180/week (+taxes) is still high. Other places go as low as $150 a week, though unfortunately did not have my sizing. And yes, Seattle is an awesome place for cycling. If you're visiting town, don't miss the cascade cycling club website. They have daily rides, at all levels. Thanks again to Recycled Cycles! I had fun! read more

Recycled.. now home to Stranger's Sexiest bike shop employee!!! Congrats AK! This place is great and worth stopping by. It will speak the the inner person who longs for garage sale type shopping and the "barneys" crowd of bikes. I can find parts for my classic Peugeot road bike and some parts for my latest downhill monster. There is a great mix of riders that work there, some young and learning others with a bit more wisdom. Most of the riders seem to be of the road/cross crowd but there are a few true rippers of the dirt that work there. Was there this weekend to upgrade an old bike but saw the price of a new Diamond Back hardtail and could not pass up the deal. VERY happy with the transaction and the free tune up after 90 days of riding is a very nice thing. Also for 30 days any parts we buy will be installed for FREE LABOR!!! The bike was everything needed up thats a great deal. I tend to install my own parts but I have no shame letting someone else do it. read more

They had a nice space and a lot of nice bikes but it wasn't quite what I had expected. First of all there were very few "recycled" bicycles and since that's what we had gone there for it was a little bit of a let down (especially given the name of the place). This also put the bikes that they did have out of our price range. The other thing was, since we went there on a summer weekend, it was quite busy and difficult to get much help from the staff. Had we wanted a new bike, more money and wasn't so miss led by the name I probably would've been more impressed. Besides all that it seems like a good all around bike shop. read more

My bike shop of choice, as every time I've been down there with a problem, it's been taken care of for me in short order. Granted, there are still issues with my bike - but, like they say in the restaurant industry, "If you start off with shit, it doesn't matter how you prepare it, you still have shit." I've got a Raleigh M20 mountain bike that has definitely seen better days. I've been hit by one car and slammed into another car that pulled out in front of me. So, like I said, it's seen better days. But repairs have been done in what I would consider a decent amount of time, even if they were somewhat expensive - however, expensive is in the eye of the beholder. A $500 repair bill might be a staggering sum for some, while others might not even bat an eye. Either way... It's not a bad place to go, if you have some knowledge of bikes. If you don't, it's probably not the best place, but have some patience and you can probably walk out of there ahead of the game. read more

I am one of those yelpers that tends to review only the extremes - the v best, or the g.d. worst. Plus add some laziness and you get maybe one review every two years. Whoops. The Boat Street location of Recycled Cycles merits one such review: these guys - and I mean 100% of the staff, whoever is working on whichever day - are consistently friendly and helpful. I'm not a gearhead (but boy, would I like to be) so I often go into shops like this intimidated as I often don't even know the right questions to ask... and these guys are just super nice and non-judgey and I always leave having learned something AND with the right gear. Thank you! (BTW, can you please rub a little of that off on your counterparts in Fremont? They, on the other hand, consistently feed my fears through their actions, tone of voice, etc., etc.. Blech. I live SO much closer to that location but only go there as a last resort. Or if I want to be treated like an idiot (perhaps the time will come for this. Or not.).) read more

preface: having worked at two bike shops myself and visited countless shops all over the west coast and asia, i can say this is up there as the best. service: the people who work at recycled are not the extremely friendly smile all day robotic clown type. the people there are all very welcoming, patient, understanding, helpful, and honest. it is so fantastic to have employees that treat and care for others as worth while humans. really earnest folks here. bikie stuff: its mostly used with decent amount of new. seems more commuting and gravel oriented, followed by road and mtb stuff, i think they have recumbent and unicycle and bmx stuff too, maybe. the magic of this place is you save money, are less environmentally harmful than buying new, find qwerky/vintage/rare items, supporting a dope company with a killer bike collection to awe at. read more

I have been there a couple of times and during my last visit, I enjoyed working with Kendra (believe that is her name). I have been a loyal patron for going on 6 years. I have never been treated badly, although I have had to wait multiple times for service, but c'mon, good things are worth waiting for. The staff has always been accommodating, willing & able to provide my bikes with service (when other shops have scheduled me two weeks out for a 10 minute wheel truing!). The used parts bins here are always changing stock & bound to have a surprise waiting to be found. New bikes? Yeah they have those too. We just purchased a new Raleigh here for effectively half the price of an equitable bike from another shop/manufacturer. read more

The last review was a little shakey, but after pricing around a basic check up on my bike, I decided to go to Recycled Cycle. Their basic tune up is $50 + parts, which in my case included a new rear cassette and chain. I'm a complete bike novice, and was just given an old mountain bike from my dad (a bike nut) so it came as no surprise he had jimmy rigged an 8 speed gear shifter onto a 7 gear cassette. All this was explained to me by the guy when I checked it in, and how much it would cost. When I went to pick it up, it the total cost was a bit under what I was quoted. I also needed a new seat, and one of the employees helped me pick out a post and just swap it with the one I brought in which didn't fit no matter what I did. He hooked up my seat right there in the store, I got a cheap seat, and now I have a bike to ride around Seattle in. Overall, the customer service was hit and miss, most of the employees seemed to be running around avoiding eye contact with people, but they were in the middle of helping someone else. The one gentlmen who helped me (I can't remember his name) was very friendly and helpful, and while in line I noticed he was helping many other people with basic bike maintenance questions. Can be hard to find, but worth the find for some good used selection and bike maintenance. Good prices. read more

They were knowledgeable about their bikes but you have to ask lots of questions as they will not give up any information without a little prodding (especially for a newbie like me who hasn't bought a bike since 1995) but once you get them talking you can learn about the various kinds of bikes they sell. And how to choose a proper one. I went to a few different shops. I had it narrowed down to two bikes and either shop would have worked. This bike just fit me better :) They sell new and used and have repair service. They also sell parts etc read more

Great great great shop. I've spent quite a bit of money here, and I've always found that I get my money's worth. The people that work here know what they're talking about and they treat me like a human being, which is kind of a rarity in bike shops. This is a shop that caters to the everyman, rather than the million dollar tri-racer superhero. They have a great selection of quality goods for normal people with normal salaries. They also have a ton of used stuff, which is great for a parts-bin digger like myself. I built up an old Klein frame into a SS MTB solely using parts that I got out of the used bins here and I'm sure that I spent less than $100. Even if you don't actually need anything, it's very easy to walk out of the store with something that you found in the bins. This can be a bad thing at some stores, but you usually only leave $5-10 in their till as you walk out. Nice. Their prices on new stuff is also pretty damn competitive also. They often come close to internet prices on everything. I'm definitely swinging down for my Cross Check when I get off of my ass and buy it. Kudos to this place. It's the best shop I've ever set foot in. read more

I came here after trying about 10 bike shops in the area...I don't know why it took me so long, I guess I just figured they wouldn't have many to choose from in my size because I'm so short. And while they didn't have a ton in my size, they did have a pretty decent selection and one I fell in love with right off the bat. The guy was so helpful that even though it was a little more than I wanted to spend, I decided it was worth it because of the awesome bike and the awesome service. When I went to Gregg's, the people looked annoyed that I was asking for help. Here, a guy named Andy helped me, and he didn't give me the "oh brother" look when I said I didn't know much about bikes, but explained things to me thoroughly in terms I understood without being condescending (which is one of my biggest pet peeves, and that alone will make me go elsewhere). They were meticulous about checking everything over to fit my short stubby body (my words, not theirs). They had me jump on it again and again to test everything to make sure it fit me perfectly and told me to bring it back asap if something felt weird, where they'd adjust it/ fix it at no charge. Plus, any accessories you buy within 30 days of buying the bike are installed free, which is a plus because I need some soon. I already told my boyfriend to give them his business, and now I'm telling you. Just go already. read more

Just returned from my second visit. These guys (and gals!) are great. I agree, the service isn't 'HI! Can I help you?!' - but nowawdays what place is besides timeshare condos? Anyway, whenever I've asked for help, they've always been great. I bought my second bike here and they've been great to help me (a novice!) get smart. I've never felt like they were 'too cool' to help me. While I was there, they seem to draw a wide range of bikers, from families with kids getting their first bike, to hard core messengers and fixies. Seems like a good sign that they have something for everyone, and get a lot of repeat business. Not only do they have a great selection of new and used bikes, but it's one of the few places I've heard of that has used parts and clothing as well. Makes this hobby way more affordable. read more

These guys are great. They were super helpful with fixing my tire issue. First visit, but they're definitely going to be my go-to bike shop! Extremely friendly service and you can tell they really care about their customers. I recently bought a used road bike off Craigslist. I'm new to road bikes and new to biking, so i didn't know anything. But they were extremely kind and took the time to explain what work they did without making me feel stupid. They were transparent about the pricing/labor, etc. and talked to me about the most cost efficient way to group repairs. They even took the time to help me look up an obscure bike part, as well as explaining the advantages of different types of bike locks! I will definitely be returning in the future! read more

I came here to get a bike rack for my Trek 7.2 FX bike -- I'd had trouble with some racks I'd gotten in the past because the attachment rails weren't long enough to connect it to the frame. Darian helped me look through multiple options, and when the rack I ended up buying also didn't fit (apparently the attachments on my frame are unusually spaced out), he stayed 30 minutes after work to help troubleshoot. We eventually got it attached, for no extra cost, and I can't thank Darian and Recycled Cycles enough. Thanks! read more

A friend of mine took me here the first day I moved to Seattle to pick up some parts for a single speed he was working on. Judging by the line of customers to the shop area, and by the speed the queue moved, you could sense these cats don't mess around. Great service, fast, friendly, and very knowledgeable. Now that I commute to work on two wheels, I needed to get some necessary gear for the wet conditions. Front fender especially. After shopping in Capitol Hill for parts due to convenience, I wasn't happy with the fender selection (due to my front suspension) or the prices. I decided to make the trip to RC's. I prepared by calling ahead to see if they could muster up an affordable solution. Greg answered my call and told me they could. 5 minutes after arriving and talking to Greg, my bike was on the lift. Two seasoned pro's creatively worked in tandem on my custom fender, and got the job done before I had a chance to peruse the impressive selection of new and used gear. How much for the parts and labor? I asked...Five bucks?...You gotta be kidding me. read more

This is my kind of shop! The staff (especially the mechanics in back) really know their stuff, and will give you honest advice and guidance if you spell out your wants and needs. For those who have to have all new stuff, they have that, too, but the heart of the operation is their recycling. They've got bins of used parts at great prices -- great for the DIYer or if you just need one of something like a brake lever. Of course, you need to be able to figure out which parts are good quality and how much life they have left in them, but it gives you that dumpster-diving bargain high without the mess of climbing through actual dumpsters. Disposable gloves or some handi-wipes for afterwards will deal with the "bike mechanic" look your hands will end up sporting. They are also big on store credit. If you've got parts (or a whole bike) that you don't need, ask the guys at the service area how much store credit they'll give you for them. Then, use that credit to give yourself a discount on one of their amazing custom-built wheels (which are a good deal even without the store credit). Novices often don't appreciate how important it is to have a well-built and properly adjusted wheel. As others have mentioned, there's often a wait if you want help from an employee; be prepared for this and spend your wait checking out the parts bins, the hanging bikes or whatever else floats your boat. read more

This is one of my favorite local shops in seattle and I still go out of my way to head over there once in a while. The thing is, this place seems to be trying to be two stores. One for brand spanking new bikes and accesories, and another for wide selection of new and cheap used parts, and a shop with helpful mechanics. neither of them are bad but sometimes it seems like the two don't quite mesh exactly. That said, these are some of the friendliest mechanics in the city and aren't afraid to give a little free advice or wrench something for you that only takes them a second but would take you a lot of time and money/tools to do. they aren't always trying to upsell you something but they'll give an honest opinion if something needs to be replaced, and they'll probably have something around to get you on the road. they have a *ton* of used parts so you can usually find something you need to get your bike going. you probably won't find anything *too* nice in the used section, but i've brought stuff in for store credit enough to walk out with a different handful of parts and not have spent a dime. read more

I have been here many times in the past year, whether it be for my boyfriends project bikes, or my project bikes, it is the place to go for good, used parts and sales people that know and love bikes The mechanics in the back are always really helpful and tend to charge lower labor prices, which is always fantastic. They also make conversation and seem to love their job. I love how they have a stolen bikes list, so they keep an eye out for bikes that have been stolen around the area. Using this feature, I called to report my recently stolen bike. The girl who answered the phone was very short and rude. I was put off instantly, because considering how much all of them seem to love bikes, I thought she would be a little more sympathetic. When I told her I didn't have the serial number, she sighed, "Let me get to somewhere where I can write down the description then" And put me on hold. Now, I would have been totally fine with that, I understand if she was busy or in an awkward spot, but she was rude. When she came back on the phone, probs a minute later, she continued to be short, rude and uncaring, and didn't even take down a full description of my bike. She seemed to genuinely dislike her job or just seem to be having a horrible day. I have noticed that the guys who work there seem to be more happy, helpful and nice, definitely more so than the girls. Basically, this place is fantastic for labor, parts, general questions, and low prices. If you are looking for a whole new bike to buy, or even a frame, that's going to be much more expensive, as I have only seen extremely nice or new bikes there. I would whole-heartedly recommend RC, but maybe just steer toward the men a bit, and be very adamant and clear about what you want. read more

I bought my Raleigh Capri 2.0 new here and later my boyfriend bought his bike (a carbon frame racing bike, forget the brand at the moment) used here on my recommendation. I've also bought apparel and accessories here. I've interacted with the bike technicians to ask questions about bike maintenance and to have my rack installed. Pros: * The bike sales experience is top-notch. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. They let me test ride bikes for as long as I wanted (with my ID as collateral) and did not rush me into making a decision. * I am satisfied with the bike I bought. It is the right fit for me to ride comfortably and fits my needs for recreation and commuting. * After installing the rack I had bought, one of the technicians in the back taught me how to clean and grease my chain for no charge. * My new bike came with a credit for a free tune-up. After 14 months, I'm almost ready to redeem the tune-up. * Nice, long hours in the summer. I was passing by a few minutes after closing one night and noticed them opening the already closed doors and offering service to customers. Cons: * Hard to think of any cons... they don't sell headlights that are bright enough to ride on an unlit trail, but then again, I haven't found a bricks and mortar bike shop in town that sells them. I think only the internet does :) read more
