I was changing my car battery myself, but I couldn't remove the bolt that strapped the battery to the car. Eventually, the bolt got stripped. I swung by, and one of the mechanics who was busy working on a car already, told me to just pull up and he'd take a look. It took him all of 15 seconds to assess the issue and get that bolt loose, and he wouldn't accept any payment. I wish all mechanics were like Ray's. read more

5 stars are not enough! Top notch PROs! I have an 2002 MR2 that had a transmission noise. I took it first to Dublin Toyota for an estimate. They told me that my transmission was shut and also one of the axles. Both needed to be replaced. They wanted over 4.5K for that. I took it to Ray's auto, where after inspection I was told that the noise came from a loose bearing, the transmission is fine and the axle needs the boot replaced.While he was at it, the clutch was replaced as the car reached 100K miles. The whole things cost me less than half what Dublin Toyota wanted. Guess what - the car now runs super smooth and quite. Now I can tolerate a 10-25% difference between vendors, but to charge twice and not get the problem fixed is just too much for me to call reasonable. Ray is an incredible mechanic with an amazing ear for diagnosing issues. His workers look up to him. From now on, I am having both cars serviced only with him. read more

Updating my review to 6 stars. Ray's Auto is honest, thorough and reasonably priced. I joined Yelp in 2008 just to write a review about this auto repair shop. This place was recommended to me by a local smog test technician when I asked about an "honest" repair shop in the area. This place is just that. Ray is the type of guy that will advise a customer based on what's best for their car (and budget) rather than what's best for his bottom line. Seriously. Thank you Ray! Its worth noting that this place is about 33 miles from San Francisco. My AAA covers towing for free up to 35 miles so when my car needs repair its easy to tow it right to the lot. Stay clear of auto shops like these. Took in a car to have its engine coils replaced and he only replaced one of them and only one of the spark plugs when he knew the other ones required replacement too. Didn't mention anything to us about it and months later the cylinders were misfiring. Took it to ace auto shop and they told us whoever worked on it last made the mistake of only replacing one coil when he should have replaced all of them so now we had to replace all of them. When we contacted ray to see if he could work on it he told us "he's too busy and doesn't want to deal with our car". Not only that but offered no warranty for the work he did on that one cylinder. Fortunately for us ace auto felt bad enough and gave us a discount due to Ray's negligence and horrible customer service. We used to always go to Ray's but he never have us good customer service. read more

Ray's my guy for a couple of years now and I've had nothing but great experiences. He hires only great mechanics and several have had prior lives I've been able to use. For example, one of the guys did car stereos and electronics for years before working for Ray. So yes, he can service the transmission or switch out a fan clutch but he also did an awesome custom install of my GPS and iPhone dock for just a couple of hours labor. Needed a car inspection on a used car I was checking out from Bay Area Auto World around the corner. They fit me in on Saturday May 24th thankfully and took my car in at the exact appt time. Mechanic was polite, professional, thorough and diligent in preparing my report. Needless to say the car didn't work out, but being fully informed of the car's condition saved me from buying something that needed too much work. Night and Day between Caspian Auto and Ray's. Called and spoke with lead tech about having my Navigator's suspension refitted from air bags to Eibach Springs and Struts from Strut Masters. The guy was totally professional. He explained it was a simple remove and replace and had experience doing it. Which was what I was expecting after consulting and speaking with Strut Masters support. I took my 2006 Ford Focus in last week to have the water pump replaced. With ~145k miles on the odometer, I did not mind having to make this small repair. However, I was NOT looking forward to having to find a new mechanic (since I moved to Pleasanton approximately one year ago). When I initially called Ray's, the mechanic did not try to sell me on a Ford-branded pump. I received a reasonable estimate and assurances that the repair could be made in one day (I only have 1 car, so this mattered to me). Not transparent with the work that they are doing. I have changed the oil and researched the filters and plugs. I just needed a stripped oil plug removed so I could complete the oil change and I was told that the parts I bought were wrong and that I would be charged for them putting things back together, although they did not remove anything, they simply lifted the car with a jack and looked at everything. I would have been more than happy to pay for the labor but the owner telling me that they had removed the oil plug when after watching them, they clearly had not was a big caution sign for me. When I get to the shop I saw what looked like an older Persian man, yelling and screaming at a young man. I couldn't understand him, but when the young man tried to respond he yelled at him more. Most recently, my daughter was on her way out of town, and had a check engine light. I made the call and Javier told me to get her in to get it checked. The friends I've referred to him rave about how much better he cares for their cars compared to dealers or other shops. I'm very picky about who works on my car and wary of those who try to take advantage of customers, especially women owners. I know more about automotive systems than most people, so I can usually tell when a mechanic tries to take advantage of me, overcharge, or suggest repairs or maintenance that isn't needed. Ray has ALWAYS been trustworthy, gives sound advice, and has always been willing to answer questions by phone and fit me in on short notice. The garage and service bays are very clean and organized. I went into Ray's first thing this morning because my car was making some strange noises. He immediately took a look and found that when my dealership had replaced some belts, they had forgotten to re-tighten some of the bolts they had loosened, causing a loud rattling sound. I contacted Ray and was quoted a price for repairs at less than 1/2 the cost of Toyota. I am on a restricted budget as a single Mom. To sum it up Ray is fast , honest and reliable . I received a call that there was an incidental finding that I had to a couple of crack hoses and an issue with my radiator. Advised me that he may need to keep my car overnight because he didn't feel comfortable releasing vehicle to me without completing this repair . His integrity is refreshing !!! I was a bit anxious as I couldn't be with out car as it's my only means of transportation. He dedicated a mechanic to my car and made it a priority . My dad went to speak with Ray cuz his car stalled in San Ramon.Ray said to have it stall there and he will take a look what is wrong w/the car.I called him to ask if he will give me a free estimate on what is wrong on the car but don't do any work in the car.He said he gives a free estimate.He called me an hour later and told me that the car has defective igniter and no spark and it will cost $450+tax.I asked for a written estimate or diagnostic so I can show it to my dad but he said they do not do that so he just wrote something by hand.I told him not to do any work in the car.I called around and found out that the repair will only cost between $320-350.When I called them back to let them know that I will have the towing company get the car and deliver them to another shop in Pleasanton, the guy said it was ok.Then 5 mins later, Ray called me back to let me know that there is a charge for a diagnostic.I told him that he refused to give me a diagnostic or an estimate.But he said they are 2 different things.I told him that he refused to give both of them.I do not need him to do a diagnostic cuz the new place will do their own diagnostic.But he said that he is not stupid and that I should pay if I want to get my car.He is rude and a liar and just wants to rip people off.He is giving all the additional charges that I ended up having the work done there because he is giving us with no choice. He is telling us to pay for stuff that he did not want to give in the first place. I will never go there again. His rates are really high and he does not even do a good job. read more

Bottom line: these guys are excellent. It's no wonder they are so well-reviewed. I worked with two people: Cody and Ray. Both were patient and helpful over the phone, and their service was thorough and timely. I used them to check out, independently, a used van I was buying from a nearby auto dealership. They were able to accommodate me the next day, and they prepared a thorough list of the car's condition. I used the review to negotiate some work by the dealership before I took possession of the van. They even took time after I picked up the car (from the dealership the next day) to give it one more quick look, no charge, to assure me it was all in good condition. Ray was very thorough in describing, over the phone (since I couldn't go in then), everything he found out about the vehicle, as well as providing it in writing. Brought my car in for a service, Ray was nice enough. Get car back with a horrible rattle from the engine.Take it back and he says its the muffler and charges me to fix it. Engine rattle occurs again in the parking lot so I go back in to say its not fixed. Instead of walking to the car which was only a few parking spots down, asks me to bring it around. Says the cars fine still because he didn't hear it. I've had the car for years and never had a problem with it until I took it to Ray's. The guy wouldn't listen at all when I try to explain what's happening and started taking about something else. Takes me for a complete idiot and goes on about the muffler. I was very insulted because I know the difference between a muffler and and freaking engine rattle. Still refused to listen. Car still rattles months later but have no money to take it to another shop because of how much was spent at Ray's. Absolutely do not recommend if you don't want to be taken for a fool. read more
