I've taken my car to this shop for different issues, and every time they've fixed it, I never had to worry about those problems again. When it came to finding a good auto repair shop, one of my biggest concerns was being overcharged for parts and labor. I don't worry about that with Ray anymore. For example, In my last visit, based on the symptoms of my car's problem, I guessed the root cause and was prepared to pay about $1200. He ran a diagnosis and found out the issue was something much smaller and much cheaper to fix. In 2013, when I was certain my catalytic converter needed replacing, I brought the car to Ray. 20 minutes later, as I was walking home, he called to say that it was just a leaky O-ring, no charge for replacement, ready for pickup. He could've told me that the converter did indeed need replacing and charged me for it, and I would've believed it. This convinced me that he's on the level. I've been a loyal customer ever since. Every year, I do three or four long multi-state drives. In the days leading up to each one, I take my car to Ray and his crew for standard maintenance and to look for anything that might be a problem. Came here from a recommendation from my mechanic to get my AC checked and fixed. Overall service was great and price was reasonable. Only issue I had was when I made my appointment they didn't inform me that they would need my truck for majority of the day to run a diagnostic check. So I went for my appointment at 8am, and waited around for about 2 hours before asking how long it was going to take since they had not pulled my truck in yet, and thats when I was informed they would need it all day. Was a little frustrated with finding out last minute as I did not have arrangements in place to leave my truck there. But after all of that, they were able to run the diagnostic, find the issue, fix it same day and got my truck back before the end of day. I've always been a go to the "dealership" kind of girl...but after reading all the bad reviews about my local Honda dealerships service dept. I choose to go with Rays Auto Service. Last year Ray's replaced my breaks and I didn't leave a review...because breaks are pretty simple. 8 months later my van started having this knocking sound...only in the mornings. I figured it was just getting old...as I was hitting the 90k mile mark I took it too Rays and they couldn't duplicate the sound, because it was mid day and the sound usually stopped after the van was warm. They didn't charge me any inspection fee or anything like that. They advised me to leave it over night for a cold soak. I got busy with work and life and didn't take it back...the sound kept getting louder with each passing day. I have had Ray's repair my car twice. They replaced the front brakes the first time and the rear brakes the second. In both cases, I showed up at 8:00 AM without an appointment. Although they open at 8, they were already working on vehicles and ready to deal with customers. I explained the issue (noise when brakes are applied). I left them with the car for the day. Both times, they called me about an hour later, informing me of the needed repair and cost. Ray said they want to access the problem early so they can inform the customer of what will be required for the repair. The car was ready for pick up that afternoon and the cost of the repair seemed very reasonable. It is a pleasant surprise (unfortunately) to get this kind of attention and service, without price gouging. I mentioned this to Ray. After thanking me, he said they always try to help their customers and want to make sure safety repairs are taken care of as soon as possible. I wish more businesses were like Ray's. read more

I first discovered Ray's Auto a couple of years ago. The auto shop that I had previously taken my family's cars to recently changed owners and had been going downhill from there. My 30+ year-old car failed its smog test, and all I had were the numbers from the test result with no idea what needed to be fixed and dreading how much it would cost. I was in need of a quality shop that was fair and honest, and I needed it quick. I went to Ray's after a couple of people at work recommended it as a general auto repair shop. When I got there, I showed my smog test numbers to Javier and after no more than 15 seconds, he said I should take it to the auto welding place down the block to replace the catalytic converter, which was probably still the original. He was right about both, and a few days and a couple of hundred bucks later, my car passed the smog test. Here's the thing that really impressed me other than the expertise to diagnose the problem so quickly. Javier didn't charge me a cent! I even asked how sure he was and if I should just have them do a full diagnosis. He said he could if that's what I wanted, but he was confident about the problem and didn't want me to waste my money on an unnecessary diagnosis. How's that for honest? Needless to say, I've been taking this same car and my family's other cars here since that day with no regrets and frequent experiences reminding me of their fair (not absolute lowest, but if that's what you're looking for, good luck to you and your passengers) pricing, honesty (e.g., telling me when a repair/replacement can wait vs. when it's urgent...and why), and great quality work (e.g., they just recently worked on a full rebuild of my 30+ year-old car and I couldn't be happier with the results!). If you get a chance to talk to the owner, Ray, you'll find that he not only knows a lot about cars but actually cares about cars...a real car guy in my book. I've been taking all my cars to a shop in Pleasanton off Stanley/Valley for years. I called to bring two of them in for scheduled oil change. She said next appt would be one week. I asked if there's anything sooner? She replied "we're all booked!". I said never mind since I'm going on vacation soon. So, I decided to call Rays and he said that I can bring it down that day. Great! We dropped both cars off and picked them up the next day. I felt so comfortable talking with Ray and there's no B/S. Also there's plenty of parking unlike the one in Pleasanton. Even the mechanics are very tentative and approachable unlike the other place where the gal at the front desk thinks she owns the place and miss know it all. Just recently I had my daughters car that needed an oil change and wanted to check the brakes because the steering wheel was shaking when braking. I called Rays 12:30pm on a Saturday and Dillon said can u bring it down in a half hour? Wow! I'm in luck again!. So I brought it down and the oil change was done and he explained what's going on with the brakes and I was outa there by 2pm! Unbelievable. Even if they weren't able to take me in so quickly, I feel very good about this place. This review is long over due. We moved to San Ramon 7 years ago and found the GREAT services of Ray's Auto! I initially went to them seeking a second opinion on repair costs for my 2001 Toyota Sienna minivan. The dealer was quoting me $1,500 in repairs that they described as urgent. Ray and his team took a look and told me only one repair was needed at that time and it was less than $500. Since then they have been taking care of my mini van and other cars always listening attentively to the concern and providing repairs at reasonable prices. Still prioritizing what is urgent and what can wait. Ray and his team have helped me out several times with check engine light scares, quick wiper blade exchanges etc. This business is run by honest and caring people. On the recommendation of a friend I took my car to Ray's a few weeks ago - as I'd made the mistake of taking my car to a dealership prior - totally my bad! Ray test drove my car on the local streets and freeway just to make sure everything ran smoothly after the service was done. He explained to me in detail what caused the issue, what they've done to fix it, and what to do next time in case the problem occurs again (but he said the chances of the issue reoccurring would be 0.01%). Who is afraid mechanics rip you off? Me! Who doesn't need to over charge to make a living? Ray! Who loves their job? RAY Where should you go if you need a quote? Here! So my car was leaking oil and I freaked out! It was losing oil by the second so I did the following: 1. Yelped the closest place near me 2. Made sure a car rental is nearby 3. Called the mechanic and asked if I can stop by 4. Drove there immediately! Ray said they will have a quote for me within an hour. So I waited expecting to pay a couple thousand. After they examined my car, they said whoever changed my oil punctured the oil filter causing the leak. They quoted me $90 to fix everything in 1 hour or so. I was so relieved it wasn't anything major and that they didn't try to over sell the problem. Also they didn't try to sell me any extra "protective" services. (Super standup gentlemen!) I just decided to sit and wait while they fixed my car. Chatted with Ray and really appreciated a standup mechanic business. Gosh if I have car problems, Ray's will be my first stop! read more

After the service, I can say, my experience was very much inline with other yelpers here. Ray is very professional, and knowledgeable. He spent good amount of time understanding my needs. There was a slight hiccup with the work and I ended up getting the car the day after. That was fine by me. It's not often that you leave the garage with a feeling that you didn't get ripped off. I got a good feeling when I collected the car and settled my bill. The staff seemed honest. hard to believe an auto service place can earn five stars but Ray's absolutely does had a few things going on with an old Lexus. throwing codes, a problem with power windows, broken key fob etc. these guys were awesome. easily $1K less than taking it back to Lexus (based on past experience and looking online for the codes). really helpful, patient, calling to explain exactly what was going on, telling me to keep an eye on a couple of things that might need attention in the future (not pushing at all to do the work now). this place will get all my business from now on. so happy with them. tell everyone! read more

Took my car for a car diagnostic, told the Owner the symptoms and even had a check engine light code. He never bother to check the problem. He said everything was fine. That he drove it in the street and end up charging me more because apparently he cleaned some part which was not in our agreement. Had to take car to other shop afterwards. Had a great experience at Ray's. My car broke down on Hacienda and I had to get a tow. While waiting for my tow truck I decided to yelp local auto shops and Rays had the highest reviews. I called and asked if I could have my car towed there and even though they couldn't see it that same day they obliged. I highly recommend Ray's auto. I've had two issues with my Subaru Outback sport that I thought were major fixes and $$, but Ray was able to get me back on the road and only charged me a few hours of labor. First, I thought my engine went out but it turns out a spark plug had been completely blown out of the engine. Ray retreaded the plug and I'm back in business. I was changing my car battery myself, but I couldn't remove the bolt that strapped the battery to the car. Eventually, the bolt got stripped. I swung by, and one of the mechanics who was busy working on a car already, told me to just pull up and he'd take a look. It took him all of 15 seconds to assess the issue and get that bolt loose, and he wouldn't accept any payment. I wish all mechanics were like Ray's. read more
