The place is nice and large to accommodate families, teens, or just a couple looking for a nice cup of coffee and a muffin. They have a vast array of desserts. Moist muffins, decorative cookies, cakes, pies, and anything sweet that your heart could desire. They also make breakfast sandwiches and some of the best flavored lattes. Have ever had. Rao's has a charming old world feel local cafe & bakery. All the pastries here were fresh and eye catching. I ordered about 8 different pastries; while they were fresh I would say the pastries style is like a Texas' 50s era interpretation of Italian and European pastries. They were okay enough but not sophisticated. It's not an exaggeration when my family, who loves anything related to apple pie, did not fight over Rao's apple strudel. I walked into Raos today to purchase a few muffins, only to see flies INSIDE the muffin case walking all over the muffins. After notifying the barista, all they did was remove the opening to the case in hopes that it would "fly out". That doesn't change that flies were on the muffins, that's disgusting. After asking if there were any in the back I was told no that's all that were available, so I said no thank you I'd buy a drink instead. I walked to the register and turned to see the barista putting the case opening back on the muffins. No switch out or anything, that's surely a health hazard. This bakery is terrible! First off, my wife and I walked in with our baby around 10am all the employees just stared at us, no one greeted us, nothing, surprised for a local bakery. We ordered a scone, apple pie, sticky bun and a macaron. First the scone tasted like card board way too dense as well. Apple pie tasted like cleaning chemicals, terrible. Sticky bun not bad, pecans yummy. The macaron had way too much sugar in it. This was the second time going to restaurant and we will not be back. read more

Horrible management and ownership! Bought a cake for my moms birthday and asked them to write 'Happy Birthday Mom' when we got the cake it was happy birthday mom written on a plastic piece that fell down and ruined the frosting of the cake. They were a 35 min drive and I called them saying why would someone take it upon themselves to write HBD in the dumbest way possible. We asked for a refund or a partial discount on the cake we exchange it for and they said NO! Knowing that we drove for a while and would have to do it again. Josh, I am a repeat customer. Not sure how your records are kept at that particular store, (Spring) but I use them for all of my events and I have a lot of events. If you can look that up, please do, so you can see how much I use your store. I also refer anyone who asks for a Bakery to your Rao's Spring location. As an aside, I was quite embarrassed the LAST time a friend I referred to you - went to your store in Spring - and was shocked at the lack of customer service. It was unfriendly, she asked for a specific cake flavor and was told they didn't have any, moved on about their business...never asking if there was something else they could offer or do for her? She was just left standing there... I was embarrassed. I don't even work there, but I referred her and I hate she got that impression especially at my recommendation. Anyway -moving along to the reason I am writing this email... I have usually not had a very hard time in the past when I use your bakery. I will mention that there is always a different person in charge, or a different manager, or a different baker...seems like a lot of revolving doors. I rarely speak to the same person twice, lately. So , yes, it is concerning and I always hope my order will be given the proper attention it deserves. Last week, I ordered a cake and cupcakes for my daugher's birthday...via email. I didn't know my husband had already been there and was told the order was not ready ( We don't live around the corner either?) At this time, I am placed on hold...and another person comes on the line. Asks me how they can help....I explain again, why I am calling. ME: Yes I am calling about my order? I missed a call from Brian? My cupcakes aren't ready? RAOS: Oh, yeah, we cannot make your cupcakes. Not strawberry anyway. ME: Why? RAOS: We don't have the ingredients. RAOS: "ok ma am what we can do is put strawberry filling in the cupcakes and use blue frosting to match the theme....will that work???" "We do have your cake order, the girl just picked up the phone and didn't realize you had a cake order too" ME: "well I guess it has to work. I have no choice at this point" RAOS: okay we'll get that ready for you! SO my husband goes back to the store..now, remember, I gave Brian my cc info the day before?..and they make my husband pay for the cake again??? If they didn't charge my card...why did he take down all of the critical info ? Did Brian forget? Is this store understaffed? It really defeated the whole point of me asking someone else to pick up the cake, which I am sure is common as most people are busy that day and we send someone to pick up the cake! Not to mention how uneasy it is to know I gave someone all of my cc info and it was not used for the purpose intended? Or was it???? I went in last night to look at the case and see what I would like to take home with me. It was 6:30 and the dessert menu at another restaurant in the center didn't press my buttons. I would have liked a piece of the key lime pie and a muffin. I understand there is a labor shortage. There were 3 people behind the counter talking amongst themselves. Not 1 broke off from their conversation to acknowledge my existence or presence. I was the only one in front of the case. Business and tip lost. Needed a last minute strawberry birthday cake and this place was a short drive from where I was working that day. They were happy to accommodate and the cake was moist and delicious, and they had several varieties premise and ready to buy. The frosting was a teensy bit overly sweet (tooth hurtingly sweet) but I enjoyed the strawberry jam like filling. Cake also conveniently came with a cake slicer. Their sugar cutout frosted cookies were really disappointing though :( too much almond flavor, too dry and crumbly and overpowered by the sweetness of the top-dry/crunchy icing. But they're really cute! Cake prices were very affordable as well and it seemed like a great place to meet someone for coffee and snacks and maybe play a game. Very homey, open pretty late. Well, called for a king cake. Drove 15-20 min after being told all they have to offer. Get to counter and had to ask as we were stared at and not greeted. Told about small king cakes and strawberry and cinnamon. When ordering smalls then 2 min later told no smalls left. So we settled on cinnamon and told no cinnamon left. Finally frustrated chose strawberry and watched the girl walk around and go in back and then come back and just stand there staring at us for several minutes. Another gentleman asked if we had been helped and we said we weren't sure as she was going to get it for us. Then give him our order and he comes back and says none of those left either and she was nodding as if she knew. But just stared at us??? Wtf is wrong with your worker? What happened to Rao"s? This has been my go-to bakery for years! Naturally, I used it for my daughters wedding shower. I bought our favorite cake with some modifications and our favorite sugar cookies. Although they tasted the same amazing flavor, they were far from what I have come to expect from this bakery. I'm severely disappointed due to so many things. Let's start with the strawberry cream cheese cake. I ordered a plain white cake that I would be decorating with flowers. I ordered lettering on top that was to be pastel green. I got an incompletely iced cake where the pink showed through on the cake under the icing with strawberries on top that had to be removed. And, the letter icing was bright Kelly green, not pastel green. It didn't look good at all. When we cut about 1/4 of the cake it started to fall. The strawberry filling was not evenly spread and was only in the middle about 2 and a half inches from the edges. By the time we got close to half, it fell over. I've never had this happen before. The icing seemed thinner and strawberry filling seemed thicker. Maybe that contributed to the fall? Now for the cookies. I buy them pretty often but have never been disappointed til now. The icing seemed thicker than normal and ran over the edges unevenly and stuck together. I called the night before to make sure my order would be ready, so I'm not understanding what looked like a rush job. I could tell from the package that something was wrong as their was icing on the inside of the package smeared around in spots. I should have said something about it as their were other butterfly cookies done correctly in smaller packages, but I didn't see them until after waiting for the cake to be fixed. Instead, I bought 6 more flower cookies that looked great hoping to salvage the cookie display. However, they packaged some on top of others with nothing between so they stuck together and I couldn't separate them without damaging. Ugghhhh! Enough! I was so sad and embarrassed. I think that's my last trip there. Newer bakeries that are closer to me have opened. I guess it's time to give them a try because something has happened at Rao's and I'm not pleased. Never again will I order from this location. Buyers be warned. You can see the picture of a custom cake I ordered from this location. It seemed they rushed this cake, didn't let it set, never had a good base. I also just ordered a chocolate cake, they put ganache inside which caused this disaster. On the bright side, they refunded me for their very mediocre work, as they should. But when asked for an explanation, they blamed the heat! This cake went from their location straight to our house without being exposed to heat. It had a life of its own sitting on the table like this. So very disappointed. I drove 40mins for turtle cheesecake and intended on getting a personal one but they were out. Being that I'm from Port Arthur I've always been a big fan of Rao's the original one. Decided to ride to this location and get a turtle cheesecake that I had been craving for over a year. Got home to cut into what was supposed to be a turtle cheesecake and was sadly disappointed to cut into a fudge cake. No one in my family eats chocolate cake. Called in to see how this could be rectified and it's obvious that the manager was very dismissive. And made sure to stress the point that we needed to bring the cake back to the store during COVID to receive an exchange. The biggest upsetting thing for me is that I stressed to the workers how much I had been craving CHEESECAKE. So it was very clear on what I wanted. I have been a regular customer at Rao's Bakery for a long time at this point, only to find out FROM AN EMPLOYEE just the other day that a plethora of their items are not fresh or made in house. Including their cannolis, lemon bars, scones and cookies. I found this out upon picking up my cake and being told there would be a 30-minute wait due to the fact that they did not have my order. I was then told that they had a cake ready to decorate in the deep freezer instead and that it would only be half an hour. The divine offerings of Rao's Bakery were sensory overload... the place is very well kept, trendy, and wonderfully decorated. The baked goods were so plentiful and appealing I asked if they've ever had anyone come in and order one of everything. I added photos of our selections, but there's so many other things I want to come back and try. My blood sugar level and wallet will be very upset that I discovered this place... my taste buds and tummy are my new best friends though! I had the Napoleon which is a perfectly made flake pastry with cream and berries... so simple yet so difficult to do well and they have mastered it! Looking for gingerbread men to do a work office team building project, I called several bakeries and found this one to have them (colleague had recommended them as she shops at the ones in Beaumont and port Arthur & raves about them). An order was placed. One dozen! I arrived and was impressed by the shop. When I looked at what they brought to the counter, I was disappointed. Some were plain and others had small M& M buttons down the front. I stated to the young lady that I had specifically requested to have plain gingerbread men...naked. She advised she'd see what she could do. She came back and said there were just enough plain. She showed me a box of all brown cookies. First of all, can I say that i LOVE the fact there is a bakery such as this one near my house? It sucks living where I do because all the good food is down closer to town (for the most part). Anyways--- onwards. Rao's is a cute little bakery/cafe that serves cakes, pastries, gelato, and yes even food like sandwiches and soups. They have a selection of coffee and stuff as well but I'm not a caffeine drinker so I can't attest to the quality of it. The pasties on the other hand are quite delectable. Their gelato is also very delicious! Sometimes though, depending on time of day and week their cakes are dry. I like my cakes moist but that isn't always the case here. Maybe because they keep everything in the cold case and throughout the day it loses moisture? I don't know, but that's no bueno for me. Clean and roomy inside, and they have outdoor seating as well that is shaded. The staff is okay. Not the most nicest bunch but they aren't rude either. I guess with the place looking so welcoming inside I expected the staff to be as well? All in all I love coming here for desert when I get the chance and I hope it never closes! read more
