The mini ramen was a good size but a little too salty for me and the meat tasted like it had been marinated solely in soy sauce. The gyoza were cooked well but I don't like ginger and there's a lot in there. The chicken katsu curry was the best. The broth isn't as juicy good as the usual ramen you would typically have at a real deal Japanese restaurant. Very light and plain. I added all the juicy seasoning and sauces that were on the table and for some reason it turned into a pho. Legit tasted like a Vietnamese pho. Dumps Dumps, about 2-3 stars. I feel like I'm on a 4-star streak with my recent reviews! My bestest most amazing friend Denby R. swung by this past week to visit me on my lunch break. It was much overdue, and I missed her face. So we needed a place for TLC-- Talk, Laugh, and Chew. The dining room was the perfect ambience to catch up. Quiet enough for us to discuss life without having to yell, but loud enough to not worry about friendstalkers. Ramen-Ya was a great option to bond during break! We were seated instantly at lunchtime (1pm), and served within 5 minutes of ordering. With only an hour lunch break, I really appreciate restaurants that can turn the order quickly! That translates to more quality conversations without the rush. Although Denby's spicy seafood ramen looked different IRL vs the pic (broth was orange, pic was green), she enjoyed the flavors. Boyfriend's mom and I both ordered a beef curry rice, boyfriend's dad ordered the seafood chow mein, and boyfriend ordered a Gomoku ramen. Food arrived pretty fast. Everything we got were big portions. My beef curry rice was alright, nothing special about it at all. Curry tasted pretty sweet to me. I ate about half of it and got bored of the taste. My Boyfriend loves to eat ramen, but said that his ramen wasn't to his liking and that he had better ramen than this. I have been going to this restaurant for many years and have never once had a bad experience. My go to is Combo Set A. It comes with a freshly made ramen with 2 pieces meat in the tasty broth, gyoza and your choice of a main dish. The chicken katsu curry is delicious and crispy. I always ask for extra curry sauce on the rice and chicken katsu because their curry is on point! Of course there are other places that make a good curry sauce but for a combo set under $20 that leaves me fully satisfied, where else you gonna go? The waitresses are always very attentive and keep the orders flowing even with the many take out orders. Their customer service is always great even when the restaurant is packed. You'd expect a restaurant with the name Ramen on it to have excellent ramen. This was hardly the case. I took a sip of the broth and almost spat it out. It had no flavor whatsoever. It just tasted like salted water. Everyone knows that the broth makes the ramen. The noodles were fine. It tasted like Sun Noodles from every other place. The pork was flavorful and tender. Been here a number of times and always got a good seat. Place has always been fairly crowded. Had the won ton ramen and it's pretty much more like some meat and more won ton wrapper. On another occasion, I had the fried gyoza curry with rice. Now that was a meal. Gyoza was perfectly deep fried and the plate was huge. Curry was also flavorful. So with the meals not so stellar, why would I give it 4 stars? Because on our first visit we got this coupon to use on our next occasion. It's one of those alright food quality but quick palaces to come for ramen. It reminds me of Ayames in Kaneohe, Hokkaido Ramen, or Sumo kind place. They are pretty attentive and efficient. I got a combo with fried rice, a mini ramen, and gyoza. My fiancé enjoyed the fried rice since we shared it. I'd come back again since it is closer to my house than Gomatei or any other ramen places. Ramen-Ya? More like Ramen-No. If you are expecting above average quality Ramen, look elsewhere. This is one of those convenient, cheap, quick, fast food type of ramen places, such as Hokkaido Ramen or Goma-Tei. I never had huge expectations for this place to begin with as I knew what to expect if I were to eat here, and I've never had the urge or curiosity. But I suppose I had to try since it's so convenient, and I've seen enough advertisements for free gyoza from 2-5pm. Also, there aren't many options in Hawaii Kai. One can eat Costco hot dogs and sodas only so many times. Ramen-Ya is conveniently located in Hawaii Kai Towne Center, next to Ross and T-Mobile. Their main draw is the free gyoza between 2-5pm, which is what we took advantage of. There's nothing special or exciting on the menu. It's your basic ramens, free foods, fried rice and noodles, and etc. I ordered the Gomoku Ramen and my girlfriend got the mabo Tofu Ramen. I can tell my ramen was just all put together and then the broth was poured or scooped on top. The broth didn't cover everything so I can see a lot of the wakame was not rehydrated, the char siu was dry, and the canned corn was still a bit cold. The broth was extremely light and it didn't taste like anything or have any distinct taste besides the bean sprouts and cabbage. The ramen noodle was okay. It was a little soft and doughy and mushy. It tasted a little like yakisoba noodles. As I said earlier, the char siu was dry, tasteless, and a little tough. The corn tasted like it was straight from the can, BPA included. The menma, or the fermented bamboo shoots tasted like it was straight from the package. The egg was just a Hard Boiled egg that's been cooked beyond saving. Even Tequila can't save it. The only part I liked was the wakame because I like seaweed, and that somewhat saved this bowl of ramen. I had a bite of the mabo Tofu ramen. It tasted pretty good with a nice spice to it, but it wasn't full of flavor. You can obviously see the mabo Tofu was just scooped into if the noodles. The soup from the ramen was seeping from the edges to the top of the bowl, and watered down the thick starch slurried sauce. That made it a little unappetizing. As for the gyoza, the wrapper was the thin variety, and it was pan-fried below average. They were not browned enough, and didn't have the crispiness. The filling was very basic with pork, cabbage, and chive. The taste was absent and no where to be seen. I don't remember ever having such a bland gyoza. Overall, I didn't expect Ramen-Ya to be outstanding, but I wasn't expecting for it to have zero taste and such a subpar eating experience. The service was great though. Very friendly and considerate service. The prices are very affordable, and the portions are big. Those are the positives at Ramen-Ya. On the cusp of a cold, I wanted ramen but didn't want to go into town ... saw the sign earlier for this ramen place and thought I'd give it a try. The interior was decorated quite nicely, and the middle son and I were seated quickly by a friendly hostess. I'm not a ramen connoisseur so I had to ask what the shio ramen was - turns out it's a clear broth, which is exactly what I wanted. It comes with three slices of char siu, and I opted for an egg at an extra $1.50. While I would have preferred pork belly (not an option), the salty char siu gave the hard boiled egg and tame broth the flavor kick it needed. I thought the ramen noodles were perfect but will try the udon noodles (another extra) next time just for variety's sake. Middle son had the chicken katsu ramen in what looked like a shoyu broth - he was slurping away quite happily so I'm assuming it satisfied! Oh, and they even gave us the free gyoza special even though it was 10 minutes after 5 pm, when the special ended - we didn't ask, they just put it on the table as appetizers! Pros: Their combos are no joke, a ton of food. A mini ramen or mini wonton (not mini though-pretty good size, I was full after just rating that) comes with 4 gyoza and your choice of an entree (I.e., chicken katsu with gravy, spam with gravy, fried rice and more) for $9.25 (that's less than a glass of wine at Roy's). Their regular size is enormous(my husband got the fried rice, I think you can feed 3 people with that) and the combo can feed 2 plus there is that appetizer of 4 gyoza. The broth of the ramen was quite good, the noodles taster very fresh and not like a package you get from the grocery store (trust me, I had my fair share of cheap ramen in college, I know good ramen ) on the table, they have condiments to help you customize your ramen to your liking (I.e., tobacco, vinegar, soy sauce, the Asian chopped hot pepper sauce-can't think of the name for it) I added vinegar, that Asian hot sauce and bit of tobacco to mine (perfection)) Chicken katsu, not bad, nice and crispy comes with the Asian gravy that you can buy from the Asian market.. Gyoza pretty decent. Cons: protein for the mini ramen was very scarce, 2 slices of beef (tasty) and one slice of fish cake. The chicken katsu is not made with chicken breast, more thigh or wing.
