Lunch in Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii... We searched our Yelp app for a place we hadn't visited yet and found Nishi Moncho Ramen. I actually was here many years ago with my friend's son - when he was visiting his grandfather! The free, shared parking at Manoa Marketplace is a bonus! The combination of it all... When you just can't decide Nishi Moncho Ramen is a great option as they do have amount of combination set menu available. A restaurant in Manoa Marketplace that Nadine C suggested is a more informal place though they do offer table service take out is available as well. Walking in is nice to see how spacious they are with lots of seating and as went over the menu was surprised of the different options they have and at great prices especially if you'd like multiple items but also seeing that they had quite a lot of Chinese food selections as well I was quite confused of what type of restaurant it really is. Keeping it simple I ordered combination A which consists of mini shoyu ramen, mini fried rice and four pieces of pork gyoza. All tasted good though may sound strange as it wasn't hot like how I'd like it like it was all (with the exception of the noodles) preheated knowing that gyoza takes time to cook up it came in just minutes and the soup for the ramen wasn't hot at all. Placed an order through their online takeout system, and as expected food came out on time honoring the mentioned 30 minute wait. Do want to note that on the website there wasn't an obvious listing of any additional toppings to choose from and all of the listed noodle options seemed to have a sparse selection of toppings which it came with. Pickup inside the restaurant was fine, it wasn't busy and service was fast. The problem begins upon arrival at home. We ordered three different ramens, requesting an ajitama egg in two of them. The worker who confirmed the order upon pickup also took note of and mentioned that both ramens would have an egg in them and there would be an extra charge. No problem, I figured it would be, even without seeing a toppings list. We paid for 2 eggs, we only got one. Additionally, one of the orders placed requested to remove the ginger topping and said topping was not removed. If I were to use a word to describe our meal, it would be "eh." Toppings were as sparse as we anticipated based on what the online menu said, broth was somewhat bland on both the tonkotsu and shoyu ramens. The noodles were typical ramen noodles. Nothing spectacular but far from inedible. The gyoza were the same. Not inedible, but not good. I think we would have been better off making the frozen costco ones at home. The takoyaki came without tonkatsu sauce, bonito, or any toppings that you would typically see on a takoyaki order and instead with an odd beige sauce on the side that I ended up not using. Overall, even though the meal wasn't as gratifying as we hoped it would be, we still ended up finishing it, so I'll give it 2 stars. Hm...this restaurant has ramen in its name, but I'm confused why after trying out their ramen. Located in the same plaza as Safeway and Long's Drugs. I love ramen so was hyped to see a ramen shop here. Seafood Ramen | $14.50 Ramen with shrimps, scallop, squid, and vegetables. This dish came with 3 shrimps, 2 tiny scallops, and a few curls of squid. The shrimp was good, the scallops were small and rubbery, and the squid was very chewy. Veggies were chopped up pieces of a long leafy vegetable and carrots. All of the inclusions were immersed in a thick cornstarch-y gravy on top of the ramen. The noodles were soggy and overcooked. They didn't seem like ramen noodles - more like a Chinese style egg noodle gravy dish. There was a separate container of soup, but that soup was salt heaven. So so incredibly salty I couldn't fathom pouring it into my "ramen". Portion was also on the smaller side, so not the best if you're hungry looking to get full on one entree. Overall this is not a good Japanese ramen shop. The food seems more like Chinese-Hawaiian style cooking. Make sure to come with the right expectations if you do stop by here. We have been going to Nishi Moncho in Manoa Marketplace for a while! Located near Coffee Bean, Nishi Moncho is a small to medium sized Japanese restaurant. There are a few tables inside but not a ton of seating. The service is consistently efficient. Orders can be taken at the counter after walking straight into the restaurant. There is parking at the front of the restaurant in the marketplace. We got set C, gomoku tofu yakisoba, and the mabo eggplant rice. Set C was good -- the katsu was crispy, the gyoza was tasty, and the fried rice was a good balance of flavor without being too oily. Their gyoza is one that I especially enjoy! There was also a good portion of everything. The yakisoba was also a good portion and tasty. The same could be said of the mabo eggplant. The price of each dish seems reasonable, especially with the portions. Every time we have been, the food has been consistent. We used to come here all the time when the kid went to the neighborhood school and he participated in community sports at the Manoa Valley District Park. We come so often that he knows his usual is Combo Set A (mini ramen + mini fried rice + gyoza). For me, I know their fried rice (regular char siu fried and shrimp fried rice) are consistent in taste and quality. It has a nice slightly wok-charred flavor. Their gyoza is house-made and really tasty. The proportion of filling to skin may not be as generous as some places but it's actually a good size-- not too big, not too small. I think their chicken katsu and chicken katsu curry are pretty good too, but they're better when you eat in. During the pandemic they've accommodated my request a couple of times to use my takeout bentos. (Because they use flimsy clamshell-type plastic containers that don't close.) This family style ramen shop has variations of udon, curry, ramen, yakisoba, and rice dishes. I only go if I'm in the area. My all time favorite to get is their Shio Udon. It's a salty clear broth with ground pork and assorted vegetables (cabbage, bean sprouts, and carrots), topped with thin slices of tender charsiu. I strongly prefer their udon over their ramen. The ramen is always mushy and not very tasty even though it uses the same broth as their udon. I've tried their other ramen and the only other ramen/udon I like to get is their mapo tofu or their curry. The shoyu broth is very bland and I do not recommend. The other items I like to get is their Yakisoba which is very flavorful and the portions are huge. The dishes are full of vegetables and the meats are tender. Otherwise the last thing I normally stray towards is their chicken katsu curry with rice. It's a typical katsu. Definitely not as greasy as L&L and other mom and pop joints. There's always a lot on the plate. If you get the combo special, you can get their homemade gyoza too! I see them making it at the counter together in the back. I had a craving for fried rice and got recommended from a friend to try this place. There are a lot of different things to choose from but I found my perfect meal. The Combo C which includes mini fried rice, chicken katsu, and gyoza (only 11.99). I also got a miso soup on the side. I was really impressed by the amount of food you get for such a low price. There was a lot of chicken katsu with four pieces of gyoza all on a bed of fried rice. The miso soup was even bigger than I expected -- and super hot so be careful! Everything was yummy, especially their fried rice! I went for an early dinner so there was no one else inside. I quickly scanned the menu and ordered my food.
