Picked up lunch here. Ordered the shrimp tempura crunchy roll and Hoso Maki variety. The cashier at this location, did not understand or speak much English. When I asked a question regarding the combination meals she appeared not to understand me. I repeated the question several times and her response was not responsive. After I was able to place my order, I waited for a few minutes. The service was quick. The storefront was aged and small. When I tried the shrimp tempura roll, the rice was terrible! Very soft and sticky and zero flavor. No crunchiness to the shrimp tempura roll at all. In addition, the ahi nigiri looked bad. Almost like it wasn't fish at all (see photos). I was really hungry and tried the nigiri and a piece of the roll. I stopped because the nigiri tasted odd and the rice was horrible. I just could not eat it. That's how bad it was. I didn't even try the hosomaki. It's in my refrigerator now. I will not order from this place again. Too bad. The Kozo sushi place that I used to buy sushi from has since closed due to the pandemic. The menu is significantly longer, but I can always get a (canned) tuna roll and egg maki and it tastes *exactly* the same as it did many years ago. This Kozo has been around my whole life, although it used to be next to Ba-Le (who remembers that?) and the old bowling alley (and that?!). The new/current iteration is clean and service is still efficient, but there's never been a place to sit since covid. The make your own bento thing is genius but extremely confusing. I have been coming to kozo since I was a kid. Something about the crab cucumber rolls is so comforting. Now, I order them for my kids and well as the egg maki which they love. I like how they have expanded their menu to include bentos, poke bowls and hot soups. My favorite is the chicken katsu bento that comes with 2 California rolls, rice, lettuce and tomato. The sauce on the katsu is like a creamy aioli and it's so good. However the chicken is so thin and it's been over cooked lately. I always call and order ahead because they do take a very long time especially if it's busy. It's always clean and always consistent sushi. All that haven't changed except the filling ...uhhh "spicy tuna no green onions please"..."it doesn't come with green onions"...oh! Okay...omg it really doesn't which is unheard of in sushi world but not only it's straight poke only no spice no flavor as well. When I first unrolled it I thought they gave me tuna mayo it was just the saddest thing I've ever had. The ume cucumber was delicious fresh veggie and perfect amount of ume but that alone isn't enough to draw me in. I asked for shoyu and they said it's rolled in with my napkins...nope! Kozo Sushi Kahala is fantastic. I usually place a phone order, because it can be quite large. I order a bit in advance to give them time to prepare the order and me time to get ready to leave. The parking lot is small, but the 4 or so stalls fronting the shop are limited to 15 minutes. Perfect. Most people are picking food up and leaving, so chances of obtaining a stall out front is good. I have not had to park in the mall parking lot, yet. The menu is quite extensive and everyone can find something they want. The quality of the ingredients is top notch. Very fresh. Sometimes I have to ask for wasabi, but most of the time, the cashier will ask me. There are no restrooms or indoor seating in this location. Social distancing signs are respected by most who shop here, and staff are very conscientious about cleanliness. read more

They seem popular because they always have a lot of people around to order and pick up food. We always call ahead to order and just walk in to pick up. It's always ready and always delicious. If you're looking for decent price sushi then kozo is a good option. Their fish isn't fresh from the auction daily and it definitely seems previously frozen based on the texture but the taste is enough to crush a craving! Their spicy ahi donburi is $7.77 (love those angel numbers) and in comparison with $14 fresh spicy ahi from other places, this can definitely be considered a go-to spot if you don't need the higher quality fish. Normally, I only eat fresh fish, however, I've been going to kozo since I was in elementary school and my mom would pick up tekka maki for our school lunch so I'm kind of a sucker for the nostalgic feeling. I stop into this Kozo sushi location quite frequently as it is so conveniently located for me. I always get the spicy ahi don (not the deluxe, I love the simplicity of the regular spicy ahi don) their rice is so good, sticky and the perfect flavor; it doesn't overwhelm the fish. The spicy ahi is also so yummy and has the perfect amount of sauce. Lately I've been getting the smoked salmon hand roll as well and it is awesome! I love that you wrap it right before you eat it so that the seaweed is perfectly crunchy and not soggy at all. This time, I brought my husband home a few things he selected from menu. There is tons of things you can order from hand rolls, hosomaki which is those mini rolls of either, cucumber, kanpyo, ume, avocado, natto, etc that is cut into 6 pieces. Many different rolls such as the dragon, dynamite, California, etc. Bentos and if course their famous party platters. Whatever your flavor I'm sure you will find something to eat. Really good for take out. If you have never been here before this is not a restaurant where you have table service.
