    Ceviche shrimp bowl
    Caroline F.

This is my go to spot when I'm hungry and want something that won't make me feel groggy after. I always get a bowl, with my favorite currently being the shrimp ceviche. The portion is quite large and so filling. The ingredients are fresh and so flavorful. The menu is quite vast, I don't think I even read the whole thing. If eating there, there are 4 tables that seat 4 each indoor. There's also a large table outdoors. Even when very busy, it doesn't ever get very noisy. It's a very cozy space, but people do a very good at respecting noise in here. The food comes out quickly and you bus your own tables, but it adds to the quaint cafe feel. They even offer catering for a very reasonable price.

Cute and clean place that you can get takeout or eat there in kakaako. Can't go wrong with salmon bake! Love that they have cheese on it, very subtle but tasty. Wish they gave more rice but i do like that they didn't skimp out on salmon. Service was fast

This was my 2nd time here. But it had been maaany years. Honestly, we just needed an excuse to visit their neighbor Hana Tea. Came in with 2 friends for dinner. (2nd) First impression: all of the chairs were up before 6p, and they don't even close until 7p? Seemed kind of unwelcoming? The place smelled of bleach - which I find pretty unpleasant, but at least they clean, right? My build your own thing was just oookay. I had a half rice wrap, or "sushirito", as we can't help but call it. I chose the spicy ahi and was asked if I wanted the sauce inside or on the side - I said on the side, but immediately after she asked, the cashier was distracted by something and pretty sure she didn't hear my answer. I paid and asked for a printed receipt on the tablet - which I heard printing. The owner(?) took the ticket and put it on the line, so I figured maybe I'd get my receipt later - nope. My friends and I each ordered ONE THING, we didn't even get drinks since we were getting boba down the street, btw highly rec Hana Tea. And yet, something was not 100% right with each of our orders. There were 3 workers at the time, and each of them seemed to not know how to do something essential to our orders? Not super friendly. Orders took kind of awhile. Food was just ok - 1/2 rice is the way to go, I think. Ahi was prepared in front of us, though. But I tasted something smoky-ish? Which I wasn't expecting or into, but that's preference. Probably won't be back for awhile, if at all? I just think there's better options out there. Also, not sure who *does* validate in this building, but it's not Up Roll or Hana Tea. Street park or 20 min free in the lot. No validations given.

Ordered lunch from uproll via ubereats I got the make your own bowl and my son got two kids rolls: avocado and chicken. We also got the mango sorbet drink and the purple lemonade. Bowl was fire. Customizable. It was $26 on the app which is pricey but I get it, there's an up charge for ubereats orders. My son's rolls were good. Skinny I wish the nori went all the way around the roll since it's for kids and it did end up falling apart but overall my son enjoyed it. Drinks: mango drink is amazing. I'd def get that again. Purple lemonade drink was absolutely disgusting. Tasted like watered down dimetapp with lemon pulp and sugar. Would not get again I love uproll and would come again just won't get the lemonade.

Hadn't been here in years even though I love this little Japanese run place on Halekauwila and Keawe in Kakaako that specializes in fresh and healthy rolls and bowls. My friend just moved into the new Ililani condo across the street so I introduced him to it. To place your order you need to follow 4 steps by choosing 1) your protein (choices include ahi, salmon, shrimp, chicken, crab, and vegan) 2) bowl or roll 3) rice- white or brown, salad or quinoa 4) dressing. It took a while for us to decide since everything looked so good. We were both happy with our choices. I decided on the aburi miso salmon in a bowl with brown. With good Japanese style portioning, it was just right so I felt sated and full enough without feeling full. My friend got the lava chicken in a roll with rice and ended up saving his other half for later. Many of the drinks were also very tempting, but I decided on the limeade which was a delicious and refreshing drink full of lemon or was it lime ? chopped into tiny bits with soda water and mint. My friend got the beautiful purple Butterfly Arnold Palmer which not only looked good but also claimed to have anti aging, eyesight improving, hair growing, and antioxidant properties! I was surprised to learn that they also serve Motsunabe! Make a reservation if you're interested in that. Seating is limited with about 4-5 tables inside and an outside table that can seat about 6. Will definitely have to go back for more of this tasty and healthy food! My favorite combo!

I am so happy that I came into this cafe. The workers were very nice and answered all my questions. The food was absolutely amazing. I got a Keiki crab roll that was phenomenal! It was only $5. I also got the guy shrimp bowl. My sister called from the mainland when I posted the picture to get a bette view of my food. She said next time I come visit you o bring me back a bowl. Will definitely come back again. Lots of options including vegan options.

    Signature Drink Menu

After being intrigued by the concept of a sushi burrito, my friends and I visited Up Roll. We went 1.5 hours before closing but it looked like they were ready to head out for the day since all the chairs were stacked and lights were dimmed. Note that you can park in the public parking structure to the left of the store, but they do not validate. I wanted to order the Ahi Lover Avocado but when I asked the cashier if I could substitute the ginger marinade with spicy mayo, she was confused and proceeded to up charge me for spicy mayo. While making my party's orders, it was clear that the staff wasn't sure how to make the signature items as they were looking at the menu for the ingredients. Normally this wouldn't be an issue as maybe they were new, but it took a long time to make them. We went to another spot to eat our food when we noticed both of my friend's side orders of spicy mayo were missing. We were too far out to go back to the store but unfortunately both of my friends were charged for the spicy mayo. The sushi burrito itself was good. Not the best quality ahi but it was a fun and creative concept. Personally, I won't be returning as there are better sushi/poke spots in town that have better service and quality food. However, I'm still glad I gave them a try.

We were on the east side of the island for the day and we were HUNGRY after a couple hours of kayaking at the nearby Lanikai beach. While I definitely wanted to try some authentic looking poke spots in Hawaii and this place didn't necessarily give that vibe, it still looked delicious nonetheless. It certainly did not disappoint! I went with the spicy ahi bowl and chose the ginger dressing with spicy mayo and the flavors were just excellent! The fish tasted super fresh and the other ingredients complemented the bowl so well. The ladies at the front were very friendly and delivered with some excellent quality poke! Highly recommend

I highly suggest you do - absolute game changer! Our little one enjoyed a small bowl of udon as well. The ambiance is chill considering the seating is very limited (15 seats approximately). It takes something familiar, strips away the unnecessary decisions and turns it into a process that's incredibly easy to enjoy. The restaurant is tiny, but everything feels deliberate. The staff keeps things moving without making you feel rushed, our waitress was genuinely wonderful with our kids and even the people waiting around us couldn't have been friendlier. It felt like everyone was in on the same little secret. The first surprise wasn't even the fish. It was the cabbage salad. Shredded cabbage, crispy noodles, miso yuzu dressing. That's it. Somehow it's one of the best salads I've had in a long time. It's the kind of dish that makes you wonder why nobody else bothers to do something so simple this well. Then came the negitoro bowl. The ikura shower is absolutely worth the extra ten bucks. Yes, it's a little theatrical with the bell ringing, but if you're going to pour an avalanche of salmon roe over my bowl, you might as well make a show of it. The crab miso soup upgrade is another easy yes. The crab almost feels like they're apologizing in advance for ruining every ordinary bowl of miso soup you'll have afterward. It isn't perfect but nothing is. The rice was a little clumpy and needed to be broken apart. After a while, the flavors begin to blend together more than I expected and those beautiful sheets of nori lose the battle against Hawaii's humidity pretty quickly. They look incredible, but they become soft before you can really enjoy them. I also wish I could order another bowl of that cabbage salad by itself. Our kids demolished the udon. Perfect texture, comforting broth and probably the easiest win of the entire meal. Will we come back? Absolutely. Totoya isn't trying to reinvent Japanese food. It's taking a handful of excellent ingredients, removing the friction and executing the experience with remarkable consistency. Sometimes that's what great restaurants do.

Gyukatsu 4/5 I really enjoy the Wagyu. It's meaty and buttery at the same time. Some Wagyu tends to be more buttery and fatty but this Wagyu has a good balance of both. I do wish the breading was fried a little more because I think it's not as fried compared to the other meats. You can tell it's lighter. Also compared to the other meats, the breading tends to fall apart. Shrimp 5/5 Great. Juicy. Crispy. Good breading. Chicken 5/5 Tender, juicy for a chicken, and crispy. Good breading. I can tell they put some effort into cooking this. If they did that with white meat, that's pretty good. Kurobata 5/5 Juicy. Good breading. I ordered individually because didn't want to risk getting the fat cuts. Good balance of lean meat and fat now. Service 2.5/5 I feel like they focus on larger parties more so than solo diners. There was a couple in front of us who said they come here every time they visit Hawaiʻi and that it's a must-do stop on every trip. When you walk in, it's a small place. You can watch a team member washing the noodles and portioning them into bowls right in front of you. Then you choose your bowl size, small or large, and select your broth. After that, you get to choose from a variety of fried items and other à la carte options displayed on a warmer. Seating can be limited because of how busy this place gets. You line up to get your food, pay for it, grab your condiments, utensils, and a cup of water, then find a seat and enjoy. I've already been here twice, and after writing about my experience, I need to make a third visit happen very soon! There are not enough days off in a week to enjoy all of the amazing food on this island, but I'm going to do my best to experience as many places as I can. It was love at first bite for me with musubi and onigiri, so when I saw a spot dedicated to this deliciousness you better believe I made a point to go there! I ran even faster when StaciLei, Yelp Hawaii's amazing Community Manager, told me it's a must and gave me her list of greatest hits and must not miss items as a guide! Now I've had a lot of these in my life, and I must say, Iyasume are easily the best. See musubi and onigiri have humble origins as a quickly made homespun snack or on the go lunch, and when you spot them in the convenience environment they're often a giant ball of rice with a tinge of protein or seasoning for flavor. At Iyasume, these are culinary adventures, stacked with ingredients, all in handheld form, and the variety they offer is IMPRESSIVE! Of course musubi starts with the classic, SPAM. I had to order the kimchi + spam, shiso + spam, and unagi + tamago + spam, all of which were awesome (even the next day!). Onigiri here are actually layered with ingredients, so you get them in every bite, unlike the convenience store versions! They have a HUGE menu, and I went with spicy mentaiko and salmon, spicy mentaiko and ikura, ikura and salmon, and tuna mayo curry, all of which were great. I LOVE that they make these to order. You can see the line in the back hard at work, and they're very fast. You're sure to encounter a line when you arrive, but don't be scared, it moves quickly. I only had to wait about 5 minutes for mine to come up! Well worth it. Reasonably priced. Very filling. A taste of Hawaii and Japan in one place that'll have everyone smiling!

I bought kimchi spam, eel spam, inari spam, and a furikake rice ball. Didn't really interact with staff as they didn't offer to help while I viewed the items and I selected my items fairly quickly. I found purchasing four musubis very affortable. Finding parking was tough and expensive in the area. Not the restaurant's fault and probably drivers are not the bulk of their business.
