First time at this location. The store is located on Young street in the Former J Shop. The interior is nice and spacious. They had a large selections of bentos. I'm glad went there early. Saw the post of othere who went midday and the selections were few. The service was excellent and friendly. Prices are a good value. Wife and I enjoyed our food. See Pictures. Enjoy

U-Kitchen just opened near my Condo, so decided to stop in to check it out. What a huge selection of Bentos. Salads, Pasta, Musubi, Desserts, etc. to choose from. I hadn't planned to buy anything, but did pick up their Variety Bento. So glad I did. It was so delicious and fresh. Comparing it to other Bentos I have had, this IMO one of the best in quality & taste. I will definitely be back to enjoy their other offerings.

Takeout lunch from Honolulu, Hawaii... I was driving past the former location of J-Shop when I saw the sign for U Kitchen! I recognized the name because I had purchased reasonably priced Nori Bentos for a meeting in the past from the Kalihi U Kitchen! They weren't set up on Monday, 8-17-26, so I told myself that I would return ASAP. A few days later, I brought a friend with me to check out this newest location of U Kitchen on Young Street. There's a lot of free parking right in front! I even saw Marissa K. there, and a classmate from high school! Wow! Such a popular place! Inside, it's clean and bright! The bentos and musubi are displayed on the table in the middle, and the refrigerated items like beverages are in the far corner. The cashiers were friendly and efficient. Note: Pay cash to avoid the credit card fee. I got the garlic salmon bento. It was delicious and fresh with tasty sides and white rice to match! I'll be back soon!

Hot and new U-Kitchen location in Makiki. Located inside the former J -Shop. This is the third location for U-Kitchen. I met owner Yudai Fukuda today. I arrived around 12:25 pm and they were almost out of everything! I lucked out on a Shrimp Tempura Bento ($6.99), Chicken Katsu Donburi ($12.99), dango ($?) and a Kulu Kulu Tokyo Cake dessert $3.95. Mr. Fukuda informed me to come early for the best selection. U-Kitchen opens at 10 am. Ambiance is clean and welcoming. Tables hold the ready made bentos for selection. There is a refrigerated section for drinks, desserts, fresh fruits and take home meals. Free parking in front of the restaurant and on the street. Located across One Kalakaua Senior Living and next door to 5 Unite Here!

Shout out to Jackie .K and Donna .O advising to go early for the best selection. Today I decided to buy lunch for the family and I arrived around 11:45am and there was still lots of selection available. Prices are very reasonable from Chicken Katsu, Butterfish, salmon , shrimp tempura, hamburger steak, Saba. Service was very friendly and helpful. I had about 5 bentos in my hand and the nice worker came to grab and helped me carry it to the counter . U-Kitchen is located on Young St. the old J.Shop location lots of parking right in front the establishment. I seen their bento's also for sale in Times super markets . I'll be back in the near future looking for a quick lunch to go . Support local

I wanted to try their bentos and musubis. So I told my husband let's go. Reading the reviews from Craig T and also Donna O.and Jackie K. I got the grilled butterfish bento and konbu musubi. My husband had variety bento and salmon musubi. The bento ill eat it for dinner. My konbu musubi was good just right for me. My husband bento he said its good. Brought also a kulu kulu cream puff will try tonight. This place is bigger selection in bentos and their showcase with drinks, dessert, and fresh fruits. Will be back again. The cashier was friendly and took my things to the counter so I didn't have to carry them around.

Tuna maki and assorted sushi.
Jim C.

A great bargain. Obviously not a secret. Went there after 1pm and they were practically sold out. My assorted sushi was above and beyond the other bento take out. The fish was a better grade than others. The size of the cut was a bit more generous. A simple shop with quality as the main attraction. The server was so friendly and kind. Energetic and straightforward. Get there early for a better selection. Catering available, too.

There is walk-ins but I wouldn't risk it The food was incredibly fresh. As it goes without saying, when you're in Hawaii you're as close to eating the freshest seafood as you can without being in Japan. We both ended up getting their Signature Negitoro Bowl but the Tokujo version which has Salmon Roe + Snow Crab + Uni and added a fresh Yolk Soy Sauce. Because why not have the Lamborghini of Negitoro bowls while you're visiting here. Along with that I ended up with a half sized udon miso soup and my wife a crab miso soup. As you can see in the pictures the food came out looking just like it did on the menu, no false advertising there. The egg soy sauce was a perfect creaminess that complimented the saltiness of the Uni and Salmon Roe. Once you mix everything together there's even added house made soy sauce on the side of your want more saltiness back but add some yuzu ginger with each bite and you get that perfect blend of flavor. There's fish was insanely fresh and had zero fishy smell or taste. The rice underneath was cooked well and the side squares of nori was perfect to make our own hand rolls. There's no alcohol served but they allow you walk 15 steps outside to the nearby convenience store where they have the cutest little dog and bring in your own beer or sake. There's miso soup was good and warms you up, but will say the corner we sat on had the AC blasting (which we're not complaining) but it did cool down our soups a little faster than we could enjoy so in the end my wife's crab miso did get a little salty. But overall the food was amazing, service was friendly and vibes were warm. Absolutely will come back the next time we're in Oahu.

Free validated parking is available next door in the parking garage beneath the Bank of Hawaii building. I really like how light and crispy their tonkatsu is here. And the Kurobota katsu just melts in your mouth! If they don't have that available their Bairin Pork Tenderloin Katsu is always excellent too! My girlfriend also likes their Katsu-Dons. Sets come with free refills of rice, miso soup, cabbage, and pickles. Last night they also had several new wagyu additions to the menu that we haven't seen before, along with a wagyu beef nigiri that we had to try and thoroughly enjoyed. Service here is fast and very friendly! We have always enjoyed coming here and the staff take great care of their customers. They also offer a Kamaaina discount for locals with a Hawaii ID, which is really fantastic for people like us who live here and enjoy this place!

Tables for seatings of two or more get booked up one month in advance. Single seatings at the counter are on a limited availability. Service is stellar, ambiance is very cultural. THE FOOD IS AMAZING!!!! They make their own panko flakes with bread specifically made from a local bakery for their restaurant. There are several katsu sets. You come in and are greeted in Japanese. There are two sauces on the table, spicy and sweet. They bring you a bowl with a wooden pestle. The bowl has grating edges inside the bowl with sesame seeds. The idea is to grind the seeds with pestle by rotating the pestle in a stirring motion, grinding the seeds against the bowl's grating edges inside. Then, add your sauce and mix. Use one scoop of the sauce first and add more as you eat your meat. Pickles are brought to the table of ume (salty plum), pickled baby eggplant, and white daikon. You choose your set, then choose your rice from three selections: Hokkaido rice which is slightly sweeter than Calrose rice, seasonal mixed rice, and seaweed seasoned rice. Then you choose your miso soup from the four selections: red miso with tofu, red miso with clams, white miso with tofu, white miso with clams. I had the set with the two pieces pork tenderloin and three pieces of the oyster. The round pork tenderloin melts in your mouth, easy to bite, and is pillowy soft. The seasoning is perfect! It was an exquisite experience! I have been to several restaurants that offer katsu, this is by far the best I've had! If this is what the food is like in Japan, then this will be my next international destination. Tonkatsu Tamafuji also has a location in Japan, so you know the Kapahulu location in Honolulu is authentic!

Exterior just calls out to you. I'll write more once we are seated and taste their food. I already looked at their menu on Yelp, read some reviews and know what I want to try. All 3 employees welcomed us with smiles and a happy greeting. It smells SO good when you enter of good food. Catchy Japanese pop music adds to the festive vibe. Their menu is extensive. Everything sounds, looks and tastes amazing. Erin was the best and such a pretty hostess, table server and made the evening enjoyable. Yuzu was all smiles, cute and prepared some of the food. She also helped Doc make our dinner reservations. Chef was so busy preparing the dishes I didn't get to ask him his name but I flashed a thumbs up to him as we were leaving and he gave a big smile. There was so much delicious food we asked for take out containers for the oxtail ramen and tender grilled beef. We had to pass on dessert. Actually my melon float was like a pretty dessert. Hubs drank a lychee soda. Highly recommend this restaurant. Come for the food, atmosphere and friendliest staff. We were welcomed in, though told that we had to depart by a certain time because there was another reservation coming in. Not a problem for us, appreciated the head's up. We were at a countertop seating, towards the restrooms. We could still see the cooks grilling in our peripheral view. We noticed that when it got busy, the place got super duper smokey really fast, to the point where they opened the front door to air some of that out. I wished they had a better ventilation system because we definitely left there smelling of smoke. As for the food, definitely shareable with different dishes from grilled meats to sides and starches. The server was also kind in helping us navigate through the menu when we had first arrived. There's a lot going on, in terms of specials of the day. Though I noticed, that when it got busy, we saw less and less of our server, and had to flag him down for more water several times. Save some room for dessert, for their sister company (Cha to Gelato Zen) is located right next door. Overall, if you're looking for a lively (loud) spot to drink and/or eat pupus, this place has an interesting vibe to it.
