This ramen shop popped up after a major remodel to the building which sat across from the Brendan Theater, so it's a prime location for the downtown Concord area, especially during movie go-er times to have customers pop in for a visit.
Parking around the area will be hit or miss, as it is the downtown area technically, so be prepared to circle around if you're there on a weekend, or during busy day times/events.
The place isn't very big, but enough for about a dozen tables scattered around the restaurant. Most of the tables are small, and even the larger seating against the wall, I wouldn't want to come here if I'm in a big party as you may not even find seating here, or be comfortably sat. As you walk in, the order counter is right there, so you just take a browse at the menu, and put in your order. It's not a sit down and order kind of place, so make sure you are ready when you walk in. The staff is friendly, and even after you are sat, they have people walking around to the tables tending to the customers, so that is a plus. Just a thing of note, since the place is fairly small, once they get busy, it may be a long wait, and they typically have a hard time keeping track of how to seat when that happens, so make sure to have patience with this.
It's not a large menu, but it's a ramen place, so how big do you actually need their menu to be?
I've tried 3 of their ramen flavors here. The Tonkotsu ramen, the miso ramen, and the black garlic ramen. Each of the flavors will come with different things included in there (such as egg, or no egg), so make sure if you want the other additions for some of the broths, that you need to pay to add them on. The portions here are decent, but certainly on the skimpier side of the noodle spectrum.
My favorite flavor out of the 3 I've had? Probably the black garlic ramen, but let me say this with the caveat that it wasn't that great. The soups here are rather bland, and tend to have consistency issues, as I've had the same soups twice, and they tasted different each time, so not sure if fluke, or something else. But in general, even when the soup was more flavorful, it still teetered on the line of being too bland, and not rich enough for what you'd expect from a ramen broth.
There are some issues with the toppings to the ramen itself. I had this discussion with a few people, and the word that I came up with, and they seemed to agree with, was that the toppings felt plasticky. They don't feel fresh, and overall, they just have this unusual hue to them, and at times, appear to be glossy, and this is on food that should NOT be glossy to begin with. They don't taste fresh, but it's not as if they're going bad or anything, so we can certainly draw a line there. They're just okay, and don't feel like any of the toppings add anything important to the ramen.
Of course, the main offender here is the noodles, and the meat. While the noodles are okay, it's not exactly what I expected from a place that advertises they're the fundamentalists of ramen. I mean, if you can't even get your noodles right, you may need to take Ramen 100 first, before you can even meet the requirements for Ramen 101. Sorry, bad teacher joke. It's just not what I had hoped for in a ramen place. The noodles are not Q enough, and just doesn't seem to hold well as you secure into your chopsticks. The quality isn't exactly top, but I've certainly had worse. Ramen was good, but not great. The meat was also greatly disappointing, as they ALWAYS (every time I've been), have come out overcooked, unflavored, and sometimes, not even warm (not looking for hot, but not even warm) except the side that's sitting on the noodles when you first get the bowl. It's either overcooked, or it's old meat, but either way, it's never good, which is disappointing.
One thing that stands out here is surprisingly the side dishes/appetizers, so I'd definitely recommend ordering the kara-age, or other fried dishes, as the sauces that come with it too are nice. If you're not satisfied with the meat in the ramen, this is a good addition to any ramen if you're not feeling that included protein.
Overall, the review is really a 3.5, but closer to the 3 side of things since there are some inconsistency issues that arise from my multiple trips down to Ramen 101. Food is better than okay, and pricing, it's not bad. Would I recommend coming here? Of course, but temper your expectations a bit, as they're clearly not going to be one of the top ramen places, but they can stand on their own at least and provide a decent meal. Maybe not quite Ramen 101 yet, but hopefully in the future, they will eventually get the fundamentals down. read more
