Hubby and I went today and ordered the business lunch. What a great deal! I had the crusted redfish and he had the pork tenderloin. We both had the duck gumbo and the lemon bar for desert. All that for $15 each. Albeit the portion are a little smaller but I couldn't even finish all of mine. The gumbo was nice and smokey and nicely seasoned with a little bit of a bite. Dined here for the first time on Sunday night 12/13 to celebrate my wife's birthday. To begin, my wife and I ordered the Texas old fashioned and Oaxaca Old fashioned. Both were very over priced at $15-$18 a piece and took a while to come out. The Texas old fashioned had a very artificial taste, and my wife could not drink it. By the way, an old fashioned is our drink of choice everywhere we go. We got the shrimp bruschetta for an appetizer, which was very good. However, the shrimp was over cooked with a gummy texture. For the entrees, I got the wild game grill, and my wife got the bison filet with grits. All of the meats were cooked nicely, but once again lacked salt. The mashed potatoes were horrible. Somehow, they had a watery taste and texture and lacked butter, salt, and cream. I've had better instant mashed potatoes. The grits that came with my wife's plate were also extremely bland with no salt. The portion sizes were also very small, and we left still hungry. However, the food did come out quickly. We would have ordered more drinks and dessert, but we didn't want to waste anymore money than we already had. Our server was nice, but did not come to our table very often. The rainbow lodge was recommended to us, but it was a disappointment. When you spend a lot of money on dinner, you expect more than watery and flavorless potatoes. read more

First stop during Restaurant Weeks 2011: The menu read delicious and the food was too. Our waiter was Jeremy, and he was full of recommendations and jokes. He was a little scattered since he had a lot of tables to look after, but he stopped by a few times to say that he had not forgotten about us. He brought us a bread basket that he said was irresistible, and he was not a liar. The bread was hot and smelled fresh. The crust was a little too crunchy for me, so I picked out the warm insides and melted in my seat. Unfortunately, they are not as good after they've cooled. For appetizers, we had the duck gumbo and rabbit boudin balls. The duck gumbo was almost the best gumbo I have ever had, ever (sorry, mom). The rabbit balls were just OK compared to the gumbo. They were mushy on the inside and turned to mush when I tried to cut them. The mush was pretty good though. They sat on a bed of red onions. I don't like onions at all, but these were pickled and edible and were a good compliment to the balls. For the entrees, we had beef shoulder tender over short rib risotto and the roasted duck leg over couscous. The beef was cooked to medium perfection and juicy. The risotto was flavorful and creamy. It also had english peas in it, and I love peas. The duck was also cooked very well, juicy and not gamy. The couscous had greens and ham which made it yum. The waiter told us that these dishes are not usually on the menu, but made specifically for HRW. The the beef shoulder was better than the duck, but I liked the couscous better then the risotto. For dessert, we tried the croissant bread pudding with vanilla bean ice cream and lavendar panna cotta with apricots. Lavendar is a flavor I think my mom would like more than I. The whole time I felt like I was eating something that I should be washing my hands with, not pleasant. But, I could see how it could be seen as refreshing to others who like eating soap. I bread pudding, however, was better. -1/2 star for making me eat soap, and -1/2 star for making me valet my crappy car. There is self parking for lunch and valet only for dinner. The valet is comp, and the driver is nice and cracked my windows for me like I asked. TLDR; best HRW I've had. Will go again. Get the duck gumbo. read more

Fantastic place! I wanted good food. My wife wanted romance. The rustic feel is perfect for the guys and just enough ambiance for the girls! She started with the fried quail over grits and bacon gravy. That was a meal in itself! Next she had the sea bass over crab ravioli. One of the best things she ever had! I had the duck gumbo and red snapper and thoroughly enjoyed it. Next time I am going to try the wild game mixed grill. The bread pudding was average but the lemon jar pie was quaint and delicious. What an amazingly wonderful dining experience! I had been to Rainbow Lodge numerous times growing up, but I had never been to this location. What a hidden gem! We arrived with our eager party of four to partake in Houston Restaurant Weeks. It was such an amazing dining experience. We all got different apps, entrees, and desserts. Each one of us thoroughly enjoyed our dishes. They were all generously portioned and delectable. Our waiter was super attentive and sweet. He did not rush us off after we finished our desserts, and he allowed us to sit and soak in the atmosphere. It is a very romantic dining spot; however, the tight quarters did make the volume a little loud. Overall, it was a evening to remember. read more

We weren't here last night to attempt to celebrate our second anniversary... And after about 5 minutes of being in the restaurant I apologized to my husband and told him I owed him another anniversary dinner since this one stunk so bad... Why was it so bad you ask? Well it all started with terrible service. Is there a word for worse than terrible? That's what it was. We were seated and then we waited... Finally our waiter came up and asked us if we would like any drinks or a glass of wine... whilst still holding the drink menu, which he finally handed over after I awkwardly asked for it. We then eventually did order some drinks - which was the only plus of the night. The drinks were pretty delicious. But the waiter then didn't drop off any food menus. There was probably a good 10 minutes of waiting between ordering our drinks and getting food menus. I would have asked for them, but our waiter had just like vanished. And during this waiting for our food menus, I was ready to just pay for our drinks and go. But we ended up staying for the whole meal - our mistake. We finally did get food menus and an opportunity to place our order. I had the sea bass and he had the steak. Again, another plus - the steak was actually cooked correctly - nice and rare. But it was delivered by the bus boy and without a steak knife - which it took a few minutes for us to flag down the waiter. A giant minus to the night was my sea bass - it was EXTREMELY greasy. Like I could see pools of grease in the "sauce" - very unappetizing. I mean, if i'm paying like $35 for a piece of fish - my dish shouldn't be half grease. I would have said something to my waiter - but we didn't see him again until he delivered the check. I swear I saw the bus boy more than I saw the waiter. So yeah - if you are expecting me to drop over $100 per ticket - I expect something better than what I got. I am very disappoint - and would highly recommend you go somewhere else for your fancy dinner. read more

Best wild game and wine restaurant in Houston. Seafood is excellent and the bison and elk are awsome. Wine selection is good with desert wines that will knock your socks off! Service is the downfall of this otherwise wonderful dining experience. The ambience is 5 star, situated as it is in the middle of a large city it carries the appeal of a cabin nestled deep in the back woods. The interior rustic yet comfortable. The food was excellent. We had the wild game sampler which was well prepared and presented. The lobster Thermidor was truly decadent. The crispy duck leg was again well prepared and presented. All were truly a delight to the palate. But alas the service. The junior staff was generally attentive; however, the waiter was a poor excuse for what should be a 4 or 5 star restaurant. He had to read the specials from a "cheat sheet." In the 90+ minutes we were there he visited our table 5 times. We had to ask for refills of beverages. They did not clear the table between courses. The final touch...they charged incrementally for the non-alcoholic beverages. Talk about being tacky. read more

Ceaser salad was warm, bagged lettuce with bottled dressing, no anchovies or shaved Parmesan cheese. It was gross. The server at our table had simple chronic halitosis which completely put us off our meal.The crab cakes were soggy and covered in sauce, not seared as they are supposed to be. We hosted a birthday party for 30+ friends and Rainbow Lodge on a recent Saturday evening.. I can't say enough about quality of food and the level of service we received. Every thing served was out of this world delicious. Salmon, pork tenderloin, shrimp, corn fritters...all of it served piping hot, fresh and delicious. The ambiance of the stone fireplace in the Trophy Room on a cold night was perfect. The servers were professional and responsive to every request. I made post Valentine reservations for my fiancé and I, and it was definitely worth the wait. It so happens that our server was a gentleman named Jeremy, and that was definitely a plus. I've been to other high class restaurants in the past, but never experienced service of this caliber. Upon arriving, everything was business as usual. It consisted if the obligatory greetings, ordering of drinks, and introduction of the menu; but from that point on, everything was above par. As my fiancé was placing sugar packets in her tea, Jeremy passed by our table, took the open packes, and immediately discarded them; in turn keeping our table clean at all times. After explaining the menu, he placed our napkins in our laps for us and expeditiously returned with our main courses (compliments of the chief). When we received our meals, he requested that we cut our beef/rib eye's down the middle, so that he could check to make sure that our request for well done was achieved. As usual, he stopped by frequently to check up on us, and even brushed the crumbs off our table when it came time for dessert. There were probably a few other nuggets of gold during his service, but in conclusion, he made our visit a lot more enjoyable. His service, combined with the cozy, clean, and romantic vibe of the restaurant, left my fiancé and I feeling wonderful...and the food was definitely delicious, in every sense of the word. I would definitely like to plan a repeat visit, and recommend this establishment to others. P.S. We recommend the bread pudding for desert. Had dinner here with a large group of colleagues on a night out from the conference I am attending. This restaurant specializes in wild game choices. The restaurant was well-prepared for us with pre-poured wine and a competent bartender. The menu for our group was pre-set with two starter, four entree and two dessert options. I had salad greens for my starter. It was very simple, but fresh. Most everyone else had a gumbo, and there was ample bread on the table for dipping. The entree I chose was a wild game mix, as did everyone else at the table. The plate had a small (2-3 oz.) portion of elk, venison, quail and wild boar. It was served with a couple of sprigs of nicely prepared asparagus and a bed of grain (cannot remember, but I believe it was couscous or maybe a rice barley?). All of the game samples were well-prepared. My favorite was the elk, which I had never tried before. It was sweeter than beef, and was prepared medium rare. The wild boar chop was also a favorite. My dessert choice was an ample portion of bread pudding with a scoop of ice cream. Although I would have preferred a little more sauce (was a bit dry), the dessert was delicious! The ambiance of this restaurant was lovely, and the service was excellent as well. I would recommend this restaurant for a special occasion. I could see it as a very romantic setting. I rated the overall experience four stars instead of five stars for two reasons. I had a couple of mixed drinks, and neither was to my own personal liking. The other reason is that the bread pudding was a bit dry. All in all, a great experience that I would happily repeat! read more

It was weird how we had to wait 5-7 min after we were sat to receive menus FROM our server. Like why wouldn't the host seat you with menus? Confusing AF. Anyways, knew everything I wanted to order by the time he came back for our drink order. Had popular dishes such as fried quail to start and mixed grill for dinner and both were meh. Quail with grits, bland. Bland, bland. Bland.. bland? Yep bland. And overbattered. Mixed grill; what was what?? All tasted the same!! Ok the chop was the best, fed most to my dog since it was 80% fat. Atmosphere wasn't even that great.. I asked through OpenTable to be sat in a nice area with a view and our hostess tried to seat us in a dark corner.. are you kidding me??? Dumb! We sat outside bc inside was lame, overcrowded and smelled old. Food was LACKING!! We were recommended this restaurant by fellow restauranteurs in the industry and felt so let down. 3 stars go to our waiter alone. Back patio dude on the far right, "friend" you were awesome!
