Not just a meal: an experience. Incredible in every way. My night here is best described as "magical".
I was spending a weekend alone in Houston (you should really try a solo vacation if you haven't) and had a lot of trouble deciding which fancy restaurant I might try for dinner. I was hesitant about Rainbow Lodge for two reasons: 1, everything I read stated this was a romantic venue (not great for solo) and 2, all the pictures I saw were of adults in their 40s-early 50s, not really my demographic. But I took the chance...and I'm so glad I did.
I arrived at the Rainbow Lodge, and it didn't look much from the outside. The valets took my car and I asked the hostesses if I could dine at the bar, and they pointed me in the right direction.
Even sitting at the bar, I received excellent service from beginning to end. Once they found out I'd be dining there, the bar menu and napkins were whisked away and I was provided a beautiful table setting, just like the rest of the restaurant. Unfortunately sitting at the bar doesn't provide any other entertainment (it's not set to watch the chef's pass) nor excellent views, but the bar staff was friendly and there was a TV showing sports. But the bar itself is worth checking out- an incredible one of a kind wood carving of a stream with rocks and rainbow trout (what the restaurant is named for). My server/bartender made sure to tell me about the specials. I was really pleased that they did not treat me like a less-worthy guest just because I was at the bar.
I chose the 5-course tasting menu, which came with 5 courses and an amuse bouche. Each course was presented by the chef, and I'm killing myself trying to remember his name. Cody? Anyway - he was pleasant, kind, knowledgeable, and answered all my questions.
The amuse bouche was probably the largest amuse bouche I've ever had, but it was delish: fried capers, salmon, on-site made boursin cheese, a chip brushed with basil & butter, and something the chef called "black honey". It was fantastic and a great way to start the meal. The fried capers were crispy and delicious. It's always a nice surprise at the beginning.
Next up was the salad, which was really the only thing I was totally mesmerized by. I thought everything was fresh (right from their own garden) and tasty, but nothing unique or special.
From that point on - everything else was sensational. Chicken fried quail? Ahhh YES. Freaking delicious. Came with some fancy cabbage and a maple-y spicy sauce. It's a must-have. Then the most amazing halibut over a parmesan & asiago risotto. Everyone is trying to do their take on an adult mac & cheese, and this is definitely spot on and bonus points for sophistication. Fish is not my usual pick, but I think this was my favorite dish of the night. Then, venison with fig sauce. WOW. Came with white & green asparagus, and lobster mashed potatoes. A lot of the components from this dish were a part of the special I was so jazzed about, so I was really excited to see them on the tasting menu. The lobster mash wasn't as spectacular as I thought it might be, but still a cool thing on menu.
Between courses, I learned more about the restaurant and was pointed to check out their view on the patio. Well no surprise- it's beautiful, and yes, very romantic. Perfect for a special occasion!
Now...dessert. WOW. It's like they had some psychic powers or something because chocolate mint desserts are my absolute favorite. And the best thing was that this dish was more mint and less chocolate. I feel like if someone could concoct the most perfect dessert for me, this dish would be it. I'm not really sure even exactly what it was (see picture!), but man I loved it. Also came with some pistachios to keep on with the green theme and give some crunch.
Throughout the meal I had 2 glasses of wine and a cocktail of my own making (I told them how to make it). I later had a taste of one of their cocktails with cilantro, which I thought would be cool to try, but I wasn't a fan of it. The bar staff was awesome throughout my meal, chatting with me about Houston and you know, life.
Before I left I hit the restroom and randomly asked someone who looked like an employee to point me in the right direction. It was actually the chef! He extended his arm, called me by name, and told me he'd be happy to escort me. Wow!! I felt like royalty.
These people know how to make a night special. I can't believe it doesn't have a higher overall rating. Not only will I highly recommend this to everyone I know in Houston, I will definitely be back with coworkers and friends myself. Great job and THANK YOU to all who helped make my solo dining experience an amazing one. read more
