My friends, this is one of the best meatball subs I've had. Perfect rainy day grub. The bread - crusty but won't rip the roof of your mouth. Oh so dippable. The meat - it's real. Not out of a can or a bucket, you can taste the quality. The Sauce - rich and bold, felt like it simmered for weeks. The assembly - meatballs staggered to prevent them falling out. My company recently ordered catering from Railtown Cafe for a virtual event. To say I was shocked is an understatement - not only from getting catering for a VIRTUAL event, but also for the immaculate quality of the food provided. Each of us received our own platter of: - Antipasto ($9.50): Cheese and charcuterie, grilled vegetables (broccolini and peppers), olives, pickles, mustard, fruit preserve, bread and crackers; and - Mezze ($8.50): Grilled cauliflower and zucchini, pickled red cabbage, marinated feta, olives, falafel, baba ghanoush, hummus, za'atar bread. The beauty of a charcuterie board lies in its presentation and variety. Boy, oh boy, was each element delicious in its own right and when combined. The most memorable taste to me was probably the baba ghanoush (eggplant dip), which smacked me with its earthy flavour and velvety texture. It was also the first element that I tried, so it was an extraordinary way to start my culinary adventure into the board. Obviously, both cheese and cured meats are essential elements. The cheese selected here was simply exceptional. Now, a quick browse online indicates that I may have gotten camembert, cheddar, feta, and parmesano reggiano. In any case, I had a range of flavour profiles to choose from - sweet, sharp, nutty, mild, you name it. As for cured meats, there was also a variety to choose from, all of which were delicious. My internet sleuthing suggests that I received pepperoni, chorizo, and mortadella. (I'm sorry if these are wrong, Railtown Cafe and cheese/cured meat connoisseurs everywhere). The sauces and dips can't be ignored either. The mustard, fruit preserve, baba ghanoush, and hummus were all exquisite. Like the cheese and cured meats, they brought a lot to the table in terms of variety and texture. All in all, they complemented everything. What took this charcuterie board over the top for me was the Mediterranean twist from the Mezze half. I loved tearing apart some za'atar bread to dip, noshing on the bite sized falafel, and garnishing each bite with pickled red cabbage. Heck, I even liked the bitterness of the olives and I'm normally anti-olive. For what it's worth, I believe any event - large or small - would be served well by Railtown Catering. I placed a large phone order for pick up which included my "no dairy" chicken club. The place was bustling and my order was all ready for pick up despite the lunch rush. Great friendly service and very cool place to hang out for lunch if you have the time to sit (which I did not). Unfortunately the great service did not make up for the fact that my chicken club sandwich was not dairy free. I got the order back to the studio and had to pick the cheese off a beef brisket and eat that. Overall the food was ok but not really what I was looking for. read more

This place is hidden amoungst all the other warehouses and shops in Railtown. The staff here are friendly and really helped me while I struggled to carry my child along with my diaper bag to carry the food to my table. Much appreciated. During my last visit, I tried their lemon blueberry muffin and the meat lovers quiche. I remember thinking, what kind of muffin costs $3.75? Well, apparently one of the best muffins I've ever had. It was packed with lemon, blueberry, almonds and enough sprinkling of sugar on top. The muffin top was crispy and crunchy, while the body of the muffin remained soft. I was going to save it for later, but ended up eating half of it. The meat quiche was also probably one of the best quiches I've ever had. This was clearly a meat lovers quiche since it contained an overflowing amount of bacon and ham. On top of that, there were tons of vegetables such as tomatoes, spinach and onions. I always struggle with ordering something meat lovers or vegetarian because the meat option never contained enough vegetables, but not anymore! Along with my food, my usual to go drink would be coffee, but I decided on their raspberry lemonade since it looked so refreshing. That hit the spot and wasn't too tart. I wish Railtown Cafe was open on the weekends since I live and work in Burnaby on the weekdays. Parking can be limited, but not impossible so give it a shot. read more

Stopped in for an afternoon treat! The menu looks great...filled with loads of fresh ingredients! Looks like it has been developed well with a good grasp of flavours, and ingredients! Love to see that in a menu...not just your typical generic cafe...you'll be in for a real treat with any of these menu items! The salad bar looks great...filled with a ton of tasty looking ingredients...will have to come back to try it out! I opted for a scoop of their honey almond ice cream! Tasty but not too sweet...love that it is their own line of fresh flavours! They also gave me a sample of the Citrus Juniper Sorbet...tart and a punch of flavour! I had mine with a Cortado from down the street so I wanted a flavour that would go well with that! Impressed with this menu and the service! It is an open welcoming space. I try to avoid coming here during the lunch hour rush because it gets so packed but when I went at around 3 pm on a Tuesday, it was pretty much empty. If you're able to, time your visit so you don't have to wait too long for your order. I went this afternoon after not having gone for a long time and they had a couple of new items including the Iced Lavender Fog which I ordered. I wanted to try their polenta cake but I opted for the spinach and ricotta roll instead. It was really buttery and flaky! The lavender fog was delicious and smooth and not too sweet. Lastly, I got buttermilk scone which is quite good as well. Service is also consistently good, especially when it's not too busy. I'm glad Railtown is only a one minute walk from work. Bonus points for letting me use my own Klean Kanteen for my drink! read more

This cafe is hogging the neighborhood parking spots where it is already severely limited. They have numerous commercial vehicles parking on the residential area which they should find their own commercial spots. If you go to the rail town cafe in rail town , you can see the street is parked with all their vehicle . There was 1 truck parked permanently for more than 10 days on railway and gore without moving which is extremely unfair to the resident. -- I would also like to share my experience. One time I park on railway street and there is a their truck that parked so close to my car after I parked. They damaged my car because they have to open their back door and there is no room because they park so close. I really wanted to like to this place. This is a 3.5. We had the Pork sandwich and the Italian sandwich. I had the Pork sandwich which was advertised as having juicy pork, jalapeño, and pickled vegetables. The pork was really dry. There were very few jalapeño pieces, and the pickled veggies were sporadic. When I did get the veggies and the jalapeño though, the sandwich was fairly good. The salad dressing on the green salad was great, but way too much dressing! The quinoa salad and the Italian sandwich were better choices. It was recommended. I would like to go back, but next time, I will stick to the salad meals. read more

Bright, friendly staff who seem like they genuinely enjoy working here. Huge, delicious salads made how you want them. Outstanding sandwiches, easily to Meat and Bread level. Amazing cuts of meat and veggies on delicious, crunchy bread. Try the chicken club on focaccia. Or the Reuben! Oh the Reuben! I've never tasted a better Reuben. I mean, in New York, in T., in wherever...never tasted a better one (with the exception of my mom's Reuben-loaf, of course, but that's a story for another post...). And the baking! Fresh. Delicious. I have been to many cocktail parties and catered events and I am so glad to find this company and their amazing food. Each bite is full of flavor and the artistry is amazing.. Imagine eating a perfectly soft poached quail egg, Beef carpaccio, Ahi Tuna nicoise, Short Rib sandwich bites, Golden Beets with goat cheese and hazelnut, Chicken Karrage Skewers, there were a few others.. A great lunch time spot in a part of town with not the most options. I was working in the area and needed a keto, healthy lunch option that wasn't just bacon and eggs. Railtown delivered. You can design your own salad and all of the different things you can add have a nutrition liable the staff are happy to share with you as they make it in house. I got a loaded cesear salad, tipped with lots of veg, chicken, bacon and the house cesear dressing. It's a pretty large portion, much more than a side salad. The restaurant is designed as a more "to-go" style place though there is a few tables if you choose to stay a while. The layout is designed for good flow and the decor is quite pleasant. The staff are very helpful when picking your toppings. My only complaint is the price, as with all salad bars I'm always a little sour when you come out paying nearly $15 for a box of veg and a few tiny strips of chicken. read more

@RailtownCafe You really wowed me. Can't wait to return and have lunch. The build your own salad reminds me of Pluto's in San Francisco. Haven't had anything like that up here in Vancouver & it was always a favourite meal for me. There was a roasted beast cooling and that made me feel like a starving street dog. Smelling the delicious aromas made me wanna howl, because I was just there for coffee and a treat. And seeing the enormous Focaccia bread was almost too much to bear. Thank goodness there seems to be a good selection of gluten free. More dairy free would be nice though. (Especially for the desserts.) What a place. The tables, the cool chairs, everything is begging to be photographed. The people watching was also fun. I kept wondering, 'what do these people do?!' Unfortunately they are usually only open during the day time on week days for lunch so I have not yet had the chance to check out their regular menu, but, lucky for me, they do amazing barbecue nights in the summer on certain Friday nights. I'm not sure what the schedule is like for these but they've been doing it for at least the last 2 summers and I've been to 2 before and recently went to their Ocho de Mayo event and it was delicious as usual! For $16, you line up, pick 2 sides (Caesar salad, coleslaw, potato salad and/or mixed green salad), get your jalapeno corn bread, pay, then walk outside to the huge smoker/bbq they have setup and they pile it all on! Corn on the cob, brisket, sausage, roast chicken, pulled pork and of course some tasty barbecue sauce on top. The plate is hefty and delicious! My faves were the super sweet corn on the cob and the melt in your mouth brisket. The place gets busy but people are always eating and getting up to let others take over the tables so seating isn't a huge issue, just remember to be considerate! Plenty of free street parking in the area too! Not sure how often they will be doing the bbqs but best to watch out for it on their Facebook page! read more

Came here for their bbq summer session. It was pouring with rain and there wasn't enough dry seats under the umbrellas or inside. Some of us in our party were drenched head to toe. We lined up and got our sides and then lined up for bbq meats outside. The chefs outside were also standing in the rain that most of the meats were drenched in rainwater. Not sure how they keep selling tickets rain or shine. They should at least allow us to use these tickets the following weekend when the weather isn't so foul. One of us asked to swap sausages for another piece of chicken as they don't eat pork but he was turned down. The weather didn't help but the fact that the food was drenched in rainwater was the deal breaker and the heavy metal music was blaring so loud we ate and ran. We wanted to stay and hang out for a few more drinks till the rain stopped but heck our ears really hurt. Oh... The bbq wasn't great either. Chicken was okay, brisket isn't smoky enough and the jalapeño cornbread with pretty much no jalapeños. Tickets were about $18pp purchased in advanced online. Meat came with extra sauce = rainwater! read more

I've eaten here twice - just a sandwich on both occasions, a vegan one and a salmon one - but both were waaaay too sloppy. You can hardly pick up the sandwich without it completely sliding apart in your hands and dropping all over before you can even take a bite. Salmon sandwich in particular was just drowning in pesto and the salmon was super sloppy and really quite disgusting. Threw most of it away. Definitely not impressed! read more

I've been reluctant to review this so-called café. It's more of a deluxe bistro. I'd like to keep it hidden to have it all to myself and the growing crowd that are in the know. When the IT crowds are thin, I'm there, having the good coffee, a kiche (spinach & feta, or any variety they have), the blueberry-almond muffins are incredible. This is the best place in town for muffins. Yes, you'll pay 65¢ more, but well worth it, and you'll be getting your requisite amount of fat and sugar. Sometimes I'm lucky and there are still a few bowls of bacon left midday, and I get away with some of them for a low price. Coffee refills 50-55¢. I haven't had the supreme sandwiches or salads, with chunks of freshly-baked chicken, pork or beef, which look extremely appetizing. Just not there that time of day. Hidden away on the north end of Strathcona. Don't let the empty space fool you. People have made off with their goodies and have them safely stashed away at work. I loved every bit of it! We stopped in for lunch as I had hear a new place opened at the end of Gastown on Railway ave. It had a big lineup as we arrived, which was a good sign for how popular the place was. The line moved really quickly, and the staff were happy and friendly and having a great time - the atmosphere was really fun for a lunchtime sandwich bar! We ordered a club sandwich and the pork sandwich, with sides of soup and the daily fresh juice. The tomato soup was great- rich flavorsome and thick, with a few pieces of fresh crusty bread. The sandwiches were just fantastic- after I had discovered Meat and Bread in town I didn't think I would ever find anything as good... until here! The club came on a thick fresh slice of focaccia, and had a whole sweet and juicy chicken breast, tomatoes and arugula (that they grow fresh on site in a greenhouse) and thick cut 72 hour sous vide bacon. O M G. I want to eat another one right now after writing this. Oh the juice is fresh strawberry mint lemonade- perfect way to wash it all down. Great little spot tucked away on Railway Ave. Went here for lunch with my boyfriend and it was packed. Fortunately, they have a great system in place for efficiently moving customers through the line, and it's working really well. I had their feature salad that was enormous and had so many different kinds of vegetables in it. The chicken was tender and seasoned deliciously. First time I had the roasted veggie sandwich which was very good but not overly creative. On subsequent visits I've tried a variety of their sandwiches, and have yet to be disappointed. Cauliflower with toasted almonds & blue cheese soup was stand-out! Sampled the daily special of mac & cheese which was nice & creamy with a crunchy panko topping (kids loved it), and a delicious ginger spice cookie. Oh yea, and an awesome mango passion iced tea! In fact all their juice/tea combos are pretty rad. Prices are reasonable, running $7-10 for a sandwich. Noticed they had a veggie quiche for a steal at $4/slice. Pair that with a cup of soup & you've got yourself a $7 lunch. The build-your-own salad also looks intriguing. We ordered the Christmas prepared meal from Railtown Catering this year. It was our first time having anything from this establishment. On every front possible, it was a terrific experience. The ordering process was super easy (and options were great; Railtown's website made it easy to select but also super simple to customize and add-on any part of the meal). When road conditions made the scheduled pickup date a no-go, Railtown was super flexible in accommodating. Importantly, this is despite the cafe being closed for renovations. In fact, when our schedule on the day-of pickup got messed up (for reasons completely unrelated to Railtown) they were awesome in accommodating. Overall, a superb ordering and pickup experience outdone only by the quality of the food. This was a full turkey dinner with stuffing, gravy, yams, multiple types of bread, an extraordinary salad, and a superb pecan pie (I'm not a pecan pie person, and I thought it was incredible). We'll definitely visit from and order from this place again without hesitation. Huge thanks to all of the cooks and staff there for delivering on a really excellent Christmas meal. I like this place. The service is always really friendly and fast. And considering they are always getting slammed at lunch time, that's pretty amazing. Vast array of sandwiches and salads, as well as the option to create your own using your powerful imagination. They always have a veggie soup happening. Yummy desserts and the most adorable savoury veggie quinoa muffins... not sure if they are vegan but definitely vegetarian. Seating can be non existent depending on the time you arrive, but people seem to get in and out quickly and are willing to share tables. If you drive here, prepare to be incredibly frustrated as parking spots in this neighbourhood are like unicorns. The food is worth it though. read more

This is a great new lunch spot (and/or breakfast spot if you're up early enough and would like something quick) where the food is fresh, tasty, and doesn't come with any pretentious edge. The tables are comfy, the space is airy and the staff are really quite nice. Sometimes you walk into a place and you have no clue HOW to even order? Too many menus, too many options, where do you stand, etc. Sounds silly, but I hate when lunch and confusion come hand-in-hand. This is not the case here... You walk in, greeted by the sandwich guy, and he guides you in your nomnomnoms. J had the pork sandwhich, and I had the caprese salad with avacado; both were VERY tasty! The other thing that's great? Special daily homemade ice-tea and lemonade! They were giving tasters of blondies, which although we didn't order (too full!), were really good! We'll be back when we're in the area again. The chicken club sandwich, which made me come back four times since I stumbled upon this place by chance, has been consistently excellent. I can honestly say that it is one of the best rendition of chicken clubs I had yet. Every element on the plate is made in-house, including their wonderfully fluffy and moist focaccia bread. At $10, this is not a cheap sandwich, but the portion size is big. It will definitely fill you up. (UPDATE: I wrote a draft of this review on December 2015, but I went back today, January 2016, for lunch and they had a notice up apologetically announcing that because of the increase of cost in produce and meat, they had no choice but to raise the price of all their sandwiches by $1. While $11 price tag makes their sandwiches quite expensive indeed, I really appreciated their thoughtfulness and show of respect for their customers.) They also carry house made ice cream jars and delightful baked goods, including focaccia bread, baguette and loaves to go. I also overheard their catering service is nothing short of fantastic.
