The food is dependably good; the owner/cook evidently knows and cares what he's doing in the kitchen. I have never eaten a bad meal here, and have brought my brother, my girlfriends, and groups from work. The owner/cook is attentive and orders are correctly and promptly filled. So then why this 2-star review? Because of the owner's bad error which does worse than ruining the experience at his restaurant: he's got this awful "music" (I'm being generous to call it that)--a single track about 10 minutes long--on infinite repeat. It is tuneless, talentless, trapped-in-purgatory music, the kind playing in the dim, dank corridors of the only motel in an economically-challenged town that hope forgot in 1977. The kind you might expect to hear while waiting on hold for three hours to talk to the tax people or try to fix a screwed-up plane reservation. The kind probably played in the infinite elevator to Hell. It has no start, no middle, no end; just the same few note sequences, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, endlessly, from opening time to closing time. It is the kind of opaque, dishwater-grey nothingness that might very well play all day, every day, in the heads of those suffering from Alzheimer's--what a lovely feeling to push on customers, don't you think? And it is not just obnoxious, but also obnoxiously sticky; it is an earworm. You get to hear it all goddamned day, hours after leaving the restaurant. I tried for awhile to just grin and bear it, because the food is tasty. But the other day I just had to know why. I held my tongue til I was the only customer and the owner/cook wasn't busy, then I tactfully, respectfully mentioned to him that as much as I like his cooking, the music could do with some variety. He made a face as if I'd insulted him and said "It's a playlist." I said "It...does not seem like a playlist, it seems like just the one track on repeat." He said "No, no, it isn't!". His weird reaction might almost be justified if the track were by a band he plays in during off-hours or something, but no, it's the lowest grade of commercial slop. And that's why the 2-star review, because there is no valid excuse for inflicting this on the people who keep you in business. Nor for snapping at a customer who takes care to ask about it politely and in private. If he's trying to create a relaxing ambiance, it's an utter fail, especially given that he's got a television up in the corner permanently tuned to parade-of-horrible-headlines news. C'mon, dude; whoever needs to go doomscrolling right this minute can whip out their phone. Turn off the TV and the music. Or put on some real music. Any kind at all; I don't necessarily have to like it, just not this awfulness. read more

I ordered the vegan burrito which comes with tofu, veg, daiya, sour creme and salsa. Plus their home breakfast potatoes! Holy moly, the amount of veg in the burrito was excellent but it overshadowed the tofu. I didn't think their was tofu actually. And the veg was huge chunks so you got a price of zucchini in one bite. The potatoes hit the freaking spot! They were so good. This epic breakfast cost me a whopping $13 and it was completely delicious! It is a must try in the area. Fruit was extremely fresh and the menu options are pretty creative. Cafe du Soleil as I remember it was always a lively, bustling community - hosting events and gatherings constantly. I can imagine COVID has been tough on this classic Commercial establishment. Without the people filling it however, I realized that it's not much to look at. Just putting it out there that Cafe deux Soleil is not the same as Cafe du Soleil. With only two letters making a difference in their name, I'm sure there's been confusion. Cafe du Soleil is a cozy little cafe along the Drive. Not very busy on a weekday afternoon, there were only a few other people around who seem to be regulars. They have a great selection of breakfast items including some vegan options as well. I chose to get The Mess. This included spicy cheesy hashbrowns, eggs, and toast. I also added on a wild boar chorizo sausage. This was a pretty filling meal. The cheesy hashbrowns were just alright though. Wish it had a bit more spice and was cheesier. It tasted like it was mixed with some salsa. They did bring some ketchup and hot sauce to our table. So I just added some more hot sauce. Overall, it's a solid breakfast place with reasonable prices and good service. read more

This is a placeholder for myself to come and try this place next time I'm in the area. Pictures of food posted by others look great. Learned about this restaurant from the recent news (people can google it if they really want to know what happened). This might not have happened if credit cards were accepted (less cash in the til). I would be willing to pay the extra credit card surcharge that business can now charge. Now that business are allowed to charge extra for the use of credit cards, from the customer's POV, the only reason they aren't accepted is because of tax evasion or money laundering. read more

Cute little place that we've visited for brunch several times. Quite a few vegan options, including a tofu scramble, vegan burrito, and some sweet items too that I didn't pay much attention to. I have been there on several occasions and this cafe is the best for brunch. It is a family-run business with great service and awesome food. I frankly do not understand why there is no brunch line up at this place. For vegans--try everything on the Vegan menu. Pancakes are fluffy and delicious, tofu scramble is perfect, and veggie sausages are the best I ever tried. If they sold them at stores, I would love to buy them. This place changed ownership in 2009. It is still vegetarian but instead of being staffed by hot queers, it's owned/staffed by a middle-aged couple (a portly man and his wife whom I have never spoken with). The food seems similar but is much better quality and better presented; however, it seems a little out of place since the place is still decorated like it used to be, that funky brightly-coloured Commercial Drive decor style. They don't have organic soy milk for coffee. I was not cool with that. However, they do use organic tofu (I asked), and their tofu scramble was pretty good. It was served with a pile of absolutely delicious wonderful potatoes and two halves of English muffin. I was pretty impressed because I ordered the tofu scramble and they didn't butter my muffin, while my friend who ordered eggs did get butter. Intuitive vegan-friendliness, thanks guys. 50c charge on Interac. That sucked actually. I tipped 50c less than I was planning to because of this. Sorry, but that's how I roll. Anyway, I know there was some big fuss back when the place was sold because all the staff got fired and things got changed around in there. I was hesitant to go back in, but it turns out it's even MORE vegan-friendly than it used to be and the food is better. That said, the food is quite good. I had the three cheese omelette along with a side of the wild boar chorizo and it was very tasty. Plus the owner/chef banged it out in record time. The coffee is diner coffee but I believe the refills are free -- so you can mitigate mediocre coffee with lots of volume, if you like (a viable idea if you're having a hangover breakfast). I wouldn't rate it low if it had been described accurately before we ordered. I'm in Vancouver so I didn't think to ask if the hollandaise was real. It isn't. It's that truck stop style of sauce from a package. And I'm no wild boar bacon expert but I'd swear this stuff is the pre made version. Thinly sliced. Cute place for brunch!! The place is small with seating inside and several tables outside. Came in around 10am, on a Friday, was not busy which I liked. Its a self serve coffee, order at the counter type of place. My girlfriend and I both had eggs Florentine, great portion yummy potatoes. The hollandaise sauce needed more flavor and could have been more creamy but it was OK. I love commercial drive and willing to try different restaurants. read more

When I walked in, I was culturally confused and didn't know what to expect. It's a vegetarian café on the drive with a french name, some native art inside, run by an Indian family with some super chill, jazzy, world music. What in the world was the food going to be like? The coffee was self serve drip and the bar-style ordering concerned me as well. Even so, some of the menu items were intriguing and they had the usual, standard breakfast items but with flare (fruit options for pancakes, etc.). This made me consider, "Well, Indians are really great at making vegetarianism delicious." This place was great. I'm giving it five stars because the food was delicious. They use good eggs with orange yolks, they toast the english muffins to a perfect crisp, and use tasty, onion-y spices for their hash browns. The restaurant style was a bit different, but i think breakfast should just be casual and delicious. Prices were reasonable. $8 for the main. I ordered the eggs poupon and my companions ordered the egg sandwich and eggs florentine. Eggs Poupon: DELICIOUS! The english muffins on the bottom were buttery and beautifully crispy. The mustard was seedy and tangy but not too strong to be over powering. The eggs were pretty, with dark orange yolks, and were cooked runny. The grilled tomatoes on top were rich and red. Eggs florentine: good but not as good as the poupon. The eggs were a little more well done and the hollandaise a bit mild. Egg sandwich: delicious, savory mushrooms and grilled onions! This gave the sandwich and overall rich, grilled flavor. The fried egg was medium. This was a hefty sized breakfast sandwich where two hands were definitely required. Only complaint is that they could have used a crunchy roll instead of a regular white bun. Anyways, the food is delicious and reasonably priced, while the restaurant arrangement is different but could be charming. It's definitely worth a go. read more

Amazing food! Had the vegan tofu breakfast wrap, the vegan French toast, and vegan lentil soup. Both were insanely delicious. They make their own sour cream that is basically identical to real sour cream. The wrap looks quite small and there's only a small handful of potatoes but man does it fill you up!!! The wrap tasted like it had actual cheese in it and was slightly fried on the outside. It's very fairly priced, the wrap was only $10. Most places don't think to make their own vegan sour cream. The French toast looked and tasted exactly like non vegan French toast. The lentil soup was delicious, had so many perfectly pairing flavours. I was super impressed with this place, never even knew it existed. Best of all the chef/owner(?) even gave away his secret recipe to the sour cream. Will definitely be returning. read more

So my friend and I have always gone to the other cafe deux Soleil, which is located a little further down commercial. We have never tried this little place, but we were hungry and wanted some breakfast so thought , hey let's have a peak at the menu and see what it's like. In the corner sat who i later found out to be the cook and the owner(wore a chefs outfit but took our orders) So when we first walked in there was no acknowledging us, so I walked in and asked the owner if we could have a look at the menu to which he rolled his eyes and grabbed one.. so as you can imagine by this point we didn't really feel very welcomed. We had a look at the menu and the prices were decent and it was a small menu which usually indicates that the food is very fresh. So we decided to stay. So the waiter/owner comes over starts taking our order and it goes something like this Me: I will get the classic breakfast please Owner: how would you like your eggs Me:scrambled please Owner:turns to friend and you? Friend: classic as well please, scrambled eggs with multi grain toast. Owner:walks away.. Me: OH excuse me, sorry I didn't even ask , what kind of toast there is, silly me.. What do you have? Owner: annoyed voice: Rye,sourdough and multigrain Me: great I will get the rye Owner walks away.. Me: excuse me.. we would also like to try the boar bacon.. Owner walk away... Maybe to some it doesn't seem weird but we found him to be VERY rude, no "can i get you anything else, rolling his eyes, not telling customers that the ATM machine is broken and it's cash only. So I found the service to be 1 star. The food was lovely. But I won't be returning here again and that's unfortunate as my friends and I are always looking for great brunch spots. So I think if this guy wants to have more people coming in, then he needs to change his attitude. Cafe Du Soleil is the small place in the hub of the Drive across from Amici's. This is the sister place to Cafe Deux Soleils down closer to the sky train. Du Soleil means of sun, while Deux Soleils is two suns. Both of these places are vegetarian, although, (blush) I didn't notice for a long time about Deux Soleils, as it is not billed as Veg. We just giggled once when my sister asked if they had any Bacon, and they did not. They are separate establishments owned by the same family. Okay, we've cleared that up. Now to the food. This one is good for a quick bite, lunch or breaky. The soups are good, but do not waste money on what they name Quesadilla. Maybe if you've never had one before, it's okay for you but seriously, it was a tortilla sandwich with cheese. Kinda tasteless, no spice or even grill marks. Never mind. I wondered why I never came in here before. Now I know. Nice kids working there, although they could use a few lessons on FoodSafe1. I personally thought it was gross to have a FILTHY bucket sitting ON the counter next to the cutting board. EEEK! So that put me off. I must say I've been boycotting this place for a number of years now since it changed ownership and as someone else said, is no longer staffed by 'hot queers' but by a family and their kids who are the staff. That just wasn't ok in my books for a long time. I will never know what happened that turned this place from 'the place to be' in my books, bustling with commercial hippies and queers, with that tinge of social advocacy and good fuzzy things, diner-chick except with dynamite fresh and tasty veggie food....into this dowdy place of dark colours and no atmosphere whatsoever. My girl and I went there on Monday the long weekend because everything else was closed. My heart bled a little just being inside and all the memories, given how different it looks now, like eating in the middle of someone's kitchen. BUT, you may wonder, what have I given it 4 stars for. I was glad to see most of the menu was kept the same, and the food, when it came was better looking than before, very fresh and very delicious. As a vegetarian and someone who likes to reduce gluten where possible this gem and literal "hole in the wall" is by far my favorite spot in Vancouver. I love their food. They got gluten free and vegan options. Their tofu scramble with veggi sausages, butter chicken sandwich and hash browns are my favourite. Their coffee and Americano are just so so, orange juice is the best because they made it fresh. They accept cash only (I don't know if it's recently or forever). Also, most tables there are for two people. If you go there with 3 people, there is only one table is available or 3 or you need to seat at the bar area.
