mushroom rosti, smoked maitake, kale, boursin, toasted seeds, and two perfectly soft poached eggs
    Nat L.

made resos for a belated birthday brunch at maxine's cafe and bar and honestly, it was such a good call. from the second you walk in, the space just pulls you in. it leans more parisian bistro than anything else, like a cozy little spot you'd duck into in france and end up staying way longer than planned. warm wood, soft golden lighting, vintage details, and just the right amount of playful charm. add in a soundtrack of old school tunes drifting through the room and the whole place feels effortlessly cool in the best way. we were initially seated in the back, but it felt a bit stuffy. thankfully, the hostess was amazing about it and moved us right away, no hesitation, no awkwardness. always love that kind of easygoing hospitality. and then the cutest surprise, a handwritten birthday card waiting at the table. such a small touch, but it made everything feel extra thoughtful and personal right from the start. we both went all in on the mushroom rosti, smoked maitake, kale, boursin, toasted seeds, and two perfectly soft poached eggs, and wow, it absolutely hit. rich, earthy, super satisfying, the kind of dish that makes you pause mid bite. we thought we had room for a dessert crepe to share, but reality check, we are not built like that anymore. completely full, no regrets, but dessert was not happening. the whole vibe was relaxed and unhurried, which made it perfect for a long overdue catch up. no one rushing you out, just good food, great music, and even better company. only hiccup, i'm pretty sure my latte wasn't made with oat milk, and i definitely felt it a couple hours later, which slightly took the shine off an otherwise perfect brunch. still, such a fun, feel good spot that totally delivers on atmosphere and experience. would absolutely go back.

Food? Fantastic. Staff? On top of it (and all gorgeous btw). The atmosphere is so cute and clean. Loved!

Great experience at our first meal in Vancouver here. Service, food and outdoor patio were excellent. We tried their cappuccino and latte and their espresso martinis! All were very good! The food! Truffle cheese omelette and the short rib hash special . And of course some carby fries ! Delicious and tasty! The short rib hash !! Wow! The cheese could have been less runny in the omelette but it was nice and indulgent! Our sever was great with suggestions and the martinis foam level was top notch! The place was hustling for Sunday brunch . Loved the outdoor patio with heaters. Really great place to kick off our Vancouver foodie weekend

This place was so amazing. My friends and I came here on a Tuesday before our flight back home. The service is absolutely wonderful, our waitress was so so sweet and truly so accommodating. The decor inside is super cute!! And the food was delicious, it was my first time trying a rösti!! Best hash brown I've ever had!

I have a lower limb disability and was very happy about how attentive they were about this. When we arrived, they asked if the two steps up to the table would be OK and pointed out where I could learn my walking poles. The food was delicious and the portions were just right, not too much food given how rich it was and not too little. We were there celebrating my birthday, so they gave me a mini version of their signature Shaft Slushie to celebrate. They brought my husband a hot chocolate with oat milk for my husband, as they noted that he did not order an alcoholic beverage with brunch and had ordered oat milk for his latte and asked if it was OK. It was great that they even clocked that and took it into consideration. It was a great experience overall and I applaud the staff at Maxine's for their attentiveness. I find most places these days aren't as observant as the staff here is. Will definitely be back and recommend them to my friends.

I highly recommend a reservation because there's usually a line out the door. We came for breakfast and it was delicious. Great service too.

I would definitely give 4.5 stars if 0.5 is allowed! We went to this restaurant as part of the visa infinite dining for the 5 courses prix fixe menu. Their menu also includes a martini as well! The ambiance is elegant but relaxed with an old school decor. All the staff was so attentive and we were well taken care of. Aside from the first 3 courses, there were 3 choices for the entrees and 2 choices of desserts. We chose the salmon rosti and celeriac schnitzel. It was my first time having celeriac. The schnitzel pan frying was very well done and the outside of the celeriac was very crispy. My personal favorite aas the burrata with roasted beets. the colorful presentation was very appealing and the addition of pistachio was a great contrast in texture The minor downside was a couple of sauces of the night were a bit to the salty side to my preference. This included the sauce americaine for the lobster gnocchi as well as the mustard jus which came with rhe celeriac schnitzel However, the night ended with 2 great desserts, dark chocolate torte and brown butter cake. Both were very light and fluffy and the sweetness was on point! will definitely visit again to try their regular menu items.

Absolutely fantastic brunch spot at the heart of downtown. Service is very friendly and professional, ambiance makes you feel transported into a fancy Parisian cafe. Came here spontaneously with my friend with no reservation and got a latte, a hot chocolate, a sausage roll, the smoked salmon rösti, a Benedict with house back bacon, and the banana bread pudding. One of the best brunches I've had. The star here are the potatoes -- the potato rösti and the crispy potato that came with the Benedict. Eggs on the Benny were cooked perfect, sausage roll was peppery, rösti was delish, I didn't have a single bad bite. For brunch, it's also pretty reasonably priced. 5/5, no notes. Would go again. My only regret was not coming in hungrier.

I made a reservation for a weekend breakfast here for our anniversary and we had a delightful time. The food was incredible and the service was so friendly. They knew it was our anniversary and they gave us a hand written card plus some adorable free hot chocolate since we weren't keen on drinking that early. The french toast was unreal and I probably could have eaten it all by myself. I'd love to go back next time I'm in Vancouver.

Went for Sunday brunch to Maxine's, we walked-in and luckily got a table for two by the bar. They were pretty busy so I would recommend getting a reservation here for a bigger group. Their space is pretty big and the location is right by second beach. I got their chickpea falafel bowl which came with quinoa, falafel, pickled vegetables, tahini, and lettuce. It was not bad but it would have been better if the falafel was crispier. It was a bit dry, more sauce would have been better. My friend got their benedict and quite liked it, they were very generous with the hollandaise sauce. I will say, considering how crowded the restaurant was and that we were seated on the bar, it was not too loud. My friend and I were able to have a good conversation and the seating was not uncomfortable.

The food was great except for my Korean fried rice, it was lowkey just rice and soy sauce that wasn't cooked with it. The lady was nice and helped recommend some of the dishes. However, as we were praying for our food she wouldn't stop talking to us, idk if she just didn't notice or sm. The place was nice and the outside had heater which was great for the cold weather.

Our weekend excursion to Vancouver literally started off at Maxine's. It was about 2 blocks away from where we were staying and we needed some food before checking in. Our server was very knowledgeable and personality plus, helping to make this an enjoyable experience. It was happy hour, so ordered 3 appetizers to share, along with some needed cocktails due to our stress of the trip. Shout out to the chef for the egg plant parmigiana, so delicious. And I'm still thinking about the rosemary fig martinis I enjoyed so much. Maxine's is added to our itinerary for our summer visit later this year and we'll definitely be planning to dress a bit nicer for our next visit, as we felt a bit under dressed in our travel clothes

    Smoked brisket croque madame
    Juliana M.

One of the most popular brunch spots in Vancouver. You definitely get the French inspiration in the decor and in the food. The Truffle omelette and the "his dudeness" were so good. I didn't order the croque madame but it looked amazing and I want to get it next time. The only underwhelming thing was the side of bacon we got. It was on the pricier side, a smaller portion, and tasted like it came from the microwave. Overall, a great experience and the staff is super attentive and friendly!

Jam Cafe, Vancouver Jam Cafe is my favorite brunch spot. Anywhere. That sounds like an exaggeration. It isn't. I've been traveling to Vancouver for work for almost a decade, and every single trip includes a stop at Jam. If I'm lucky, two. I've also become that coworker who convinces everyone to meet outside at 7:45 in the morning so we can be part of the first seating at 8:00. Thankfully, we're all from the East Coast and have been awake since 5:00 anyway. Over the years I've successfully JAMfluenced more business travelers than I'd like to admit. And yes, it's still worth the wait even if you're not first in line. The restaurant itself is tiny. Cozy farmhouse vibes, mismatched decorations covering the walls, and maybe 15 tables between the dining room and patio. It feels more like someone's favorite neighborhood breakfast spot than one of Vancouver's brunch institutions. The menu is comfort food turned up to eleven. Everything is indulgent, creative, and somehow still balanced. You can tell the kitchen starts with great ingredients because every component tastes like it could stand on its own. I try to branch out every visit... and then usually end up ordering the Tater Tot Bowl anyway. Crispy tater tots, buffalo sauce, Mexican street corn relish, and ridiculously good pulled pork. It's the kind of dish that sounds like it shouldn't work, but every bite somehow gets better than the last. And then there are the cinnamon roll pancakes. They are enormous. They're also one of the best brunch dishes I've ever eaten. Birdfluencer Lorraine M. declared them the best pancakes she's ever had, and after several visits, I don't have much of an argument. Service is exactly what it needs to be. Friendly, efficient, and quick. The staff knows there's a line forming outside before the doors even open, but you never feel rushed. Overall, Jam Cafe has officially become part of my Vancouver tradition. At this point, a work trip to the city doesn't really start until I've had breakfast here. If you're visiting Vancouver and only have time for one brunch, this would be my pick without a second thought.

Service was good, friendly. The restaurant is the same as I recall, clean enough. A little cramped and the seating isnt too comfortable. Ive had it before and at least its pretty consistent. Ive tried several other things on their menu in the past too, all pretty solid 4/5. Nothing standout as so amazing to deserve 5 stars, but consistent and tasty. I did have a reservation which they charge $10/person for, purely for donation to a charity and does not contribute to your meal at all, and also nonrefundable. While I find this somewhat annoying, I dont blame them for doing this from a business standpoint. They always have a lineup so there is no shortage of customers for them. There is no reason they need to deal with the headache of a ton of reservations. On the flip side, they honoured my reservation in a very timely fashion and I bypassed the line, so props to them for doing that part right. If you have to park, then you may find street metered parking or use one of the nearby paid lots.

He suggested a Benedict dish, but I'm not a fan of runny eggs. I had already decided on the El Camino poutine and plot twist....it also came with two runny poached eggs. Even so, it was still delicious, mainly because the yolk texture wasn't an issue with the crema on the dish. That poutine was an easy 9/10. It came loaded with cheese curds, pork carnitas that weren't dry at all, bacon, pinto beans, roasted pineapple for a little sweetness, salsa, jalapeños, pickled onions, salsa verde, cilantro crema, and spinach. The herb potatoes were seasoned so well too. All in all, a great last meal in Vancouver from the food to the service (even beyond Dursh, everyone was helpful) to the patio vibe. Great spot.

I was meeting a friend here yesterday who's visiting from California, and when deciding on a meeting place, we realized a bunch of the Gastown coffee roaster places were closed on Sunday, so I mentioned Breka , knowing it was opened 24/7. (LOVE this!). Plus, this site is close to Waterfront Station, and my friend had a busy day planned, taking the Seabus to N.Van and doing a lot of sightseeing. So this Breka was perfect. I was there early at 10 am-ish, and from the outset, I was impressed: exposed brick wall, long counter and display case, fully stocked with the most beautiful pastries and tarts and cakes, and lovely looking sandwiches, too....Just lovely. I ordered a tea from the guy taking the orders. At the check-out, the woman working the cashier was the most unfriendly, aloof person I have ever encountered at a Breka. She was downright dour. Never looked up, never smiled, said I owed X for the tea I ordered, gave me a receipt and said I was "number 3", no "thank you" (despite my saying thanks!), nothing. She looked really unhappy and bothered to be there. (I sat at a nearby table, waiting for my number to be called. I saw her interactions with all the people behind me - and there were quite a few, as it got suddenly busy in the cafe. She was cold and unfriendly to everyone in line as she rang them all up. These are mostly tourists! Why have a dour, borderline-hostile woman at the check-out counter of a busy cafe in a touristy part of our city? I just don't get it). Anyhow, I waited 10 minutes to hear my number called, but I never heard it. I walked up to the take-out area and there was my tea, on a receipt that said "number 3". Did they call out my number? I honestly don't know. I was seated at a table a few feet from the area and listening for my number and I didn't hear it called. I was not impressed with this set-up. Not at all. My friend arrived and got a chocolate concoction which looked amazing, and he loved it, so there's that. I still love Brekas but I probably won't return to this site. Between the cold experience at the cash and the prolonged waiting for my order (a cup of tea!), and not being sure if my order number was ever called, it just all left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

This place was absolutely worth it…read more We stayed at the Fairmont which made this super convenient. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. The menu selection for adults and kids was excellent. And the food was just fine right and at a good quality. The star is the high tea. If you've never done high tea before definitely do it here. We go regularly and experienced some of the best one's in the US. This i think is the best or second best I've ever had. The value is there. The ambience was exquisite. The charm was there. And the food was excellent. Every bite was executed well. We even had vegetarians with us which sometimes get short changed and they got as good of an experience as we did.

The service was warm and attentive without being overbearing, and the food? So much of it. We actually had to take some home, which almost never happens with high tea. The pastries and sandwiches were not only beautifully presented, but also creative and well-executed--nothing felt like filler. You can tell there was real thought put into the menu. The space itself is elegant and charming, making it perfect for a pre-spring outing, a catch-up with friends, or a low-key celebration. Would I come back? Absolutely--especially for a themed menu like this.

I've only been to the original location on Robson years ago, so wasn't sure if the quality had stayed the same, but we thought it was worth trying. We ordered a Tiramisu and a Bresilienne to share between four people. It came out it in relatively short time. And wow, they were both even better than I remember. Their waffles are incredibly crisp and light, despite the amount of toppings on them. I don't know how they make them so they stay so resistant to going soggy. And despite the amount of whipped cream, ice cream and sauce on them, the waffle was always able to balance out the sweetness. Their waffles are just perfect balance of flavour and texture. Service was also quite impressive. Our server was very pleasant and attentive, and brought share plates with out being asked. Overall, a great dessert. I don't know why I haven't returned earlier.

We were having gorgeous weather in Vancouver so we decided to eat on the covered patio. The place is pretty cozy, but was only moderately busy when we went. They have a pretty good menu with lots a Benedict's and a build your own breakfast option that seemed pretty nice. I took the recommendation from our server and got the bacon benny. It did not disappoint. I think I have recently discovered that I love poached eggs and these were perfect. The yolk was nice and runny and the white was firm but not hard. I like to cut in to my egg and have it run down and get messy on the plate. The hollandaise was excellent. So many breakfast places will serve it broken, but not here. It had the perfect amount of lemon, butter ratio for my taste and I really enjoyed it. The bacon was good, not to salty, and the english muffin was, well, an English muffin from a package that they toasted and out on the plate. I did splurge and paid the extra dollar for the truffle potatoes and they were very good. I love truffle oil on potatoes so I am a sucker for it whenever its on a menu. You just cant mess it up. Fried potatoes, truffle oil, and a lemon squeeze to bring it all together. My wife got the brunch burger and she loved it. It was a messy breakfast burger that a lot of places have but this one was done right. A poached oozy egg, on a burger patty with american cheese, the best burger cheese in my opinion, bacon, hollandaise and arugula on a brioche bun! It came with tater tots and they were nice and crispy just like she likes them. Well, why didn't I give it five stars you may be asking? Great question. Here it is, each plate came with a side that was just awful. Mine had some "fresh" fruit that nearly made me laugh. It consisted of the saddest, limpest piece of watermelon I have ever seen this side of a trash can. I also had an old crusty orange wedge and a single grape. My wife got a slimy side salad that I think was holding on for dear life. Both, we deemed inedible and moved on immediately. I think there is a rule, or at least there should be one, in restaurants that if you wouldn't eat it then don't serve it. There might be another one that says if you eat rotten food maybe get a different job and see rule one. Overall, we liked the place and would go back. We would just avoid the salads and fresh fruit and stick to the food they cook.

But first, the food - I ordered scrambled eggs, chicken apple sausage and paid an extra $1 for truffled lemon potatoes. The verdict? 4 out of 5. I'd ordered the eggs "very soft" and they verged on medium-firm. They still tasted good. I'll gladly pay extra for the truffled potatoes next time. My husband ordered the salmon avocado benny. While he loved the tomato soup he chose on the side, he was less enamoured by the benny itself. I had a taste and was underwhelmed by a forkful of overripe avocado and slightly fishy-tasting salmon. We finished with an order of beignets which despite being freshly-fried, were bland; although the accompanying strawberry sauce was deliciously tangy-sweet. Onto the service. This place spins like a top, and I mean that in a good way. Although we came at a peak time, all front of the house staff we encountered -- from the hostess to our bubbly server, to the smooth manager -- struck a perfect balance of being in flow, working flawlessly together, and maintaining light conversation with us. Exemplary. 5 stars out of 5.
