This place is related to The Story Cafe in Richmond, whose food I liked (but remember the service was very slow). The menu here looked pretty good, so decided to give it a try. We made reservations on OpenTable. At the moment, the Sequel gives 1000 points for dinner reservations. We arrived on time, and were immediately seated in the corner. It's a nice space suited for a fine dining atmosphere, but not very big. We tried the following: - Scallop Ceviche: OK. This would be good, but far spicier than any ceviche I've had. Wasn't a problem for me, but my wife couldn't eat it because it was too spicy. I think a warning on this one would be helpful. Otherwise, the preparation and presentation was good. - Grilled Squid: Good. Nicely cooked, and generous amount of salt to give it flavour. - Foie Gras: Good. Well presented, and apple and figs were nice. An additional slice of bread would've been nice. - Beef Papardelle: Very good. Short-rib and demi-cream sauce was delicious. May favourite dish of the night. - Signature Cheesecake: Ok. Very average. Could have used some sort of sauce/coulis to make it less dry. Service was fine. They categorize themselves as casual fine dining, so the service level was more like casual dining because it was more relaxed Overall, it was a good meal. I would say for downtown, this is more a "good value" restaurant. The food is pretty good, as is the service, but it's not going to outshine other restaurants in innovation or quality. read more

Walked by this restaurant many times and finally have a chance to taste the food. The entrance is not on the street but through the residential entrance. Modern decor. At noon they offer both the brunch and lunch menus. My breakfast bowl offers two poached eggs and prawns. They did not ask me the doneness of the poached eggs and arrive medium just as I like them. For the sautéed mushrooms and spinach - mushrooms feel like they are deep fried than sautéed and are on the oily side - despite I asked for easy on oil and low sodium. I came back for dinner on a Saturday. I just walked in without a reservation; sadly no tables available (all reserved) but I could sit at the bar. Bartender took my order. The waitresses served the food. we had: beet + burrata salad - great salad. Nice mix of beets, greens, one reasonably sized burrata ball, and pistachios. Dressing was awesome too. Im usually not a salad fan but this one was just right. 5/5. Canadian burger + truffle fries. Excellent. easy 5/5. Beautiful char on the burger (traditional patty, not a smash patty) but still juicy. lightly toasted bun but still crisp. Served with lettuce, tomato, thick-cut smoked bacon, an onion ring, and pickles. What's not to like? If there was a weak point to it, its their sauce. Seems to just be mayo. But I didnt mind, since the pickles added the necessary acidity and balanced it out nicely. Fries were great too. medium sized cut, very crisp outside (i believe lightly battered) and fluffy inside. Beef tagliatelle - pretty good. The noodles are on the thick side and the sauce was lacking a bit of depth. But the dish was a solid 4/5. Everyone was super friendly, and service was great. It might be due to miscommunication among the service team, we sat down for close to 10 minutes and our server had not stopped by with water or beverage offer. However i have to say the service was great after that initial mishap We both chose to have vegetarian dishes for the day. We ordered organic symphony greens with added shrimps. The mix of green vegetables was very fresh and the citrus balsamic dressing was a great touch We also ordered the asparagus garden. which came with a variety of grilled vegetables. The grilled asparagus and and grape tomatoes were very well done. The added cheese on top was a great addition. It was the walnuts and honey which caught my attention to the dish. However the amount of walnuts and honey was too little for the dish which made it hardly able to taste We both had a good experience for the brunch and we would like to go back to try other brunch plates which also caught our attention this time read more

Been here a few times. Relatively large space with tables for mid to large size groups & bar seating as well. The bartender (s) here are very friendly and can make you just about any drink (even if it's not on the menu). The drink names are quite funny as well. This round we had the miso Sablefish which was a bit on the small side but I going the flavors went well together & the zucchini noodles definitely don't make you leave feeling weighed down. My date had the Ribeye which yo be fair was a very large slab. However our cook this round was a bit overdone even though we asked for medium rare. Such a shame cause it sure was expensive but then that's the cost of meat these days I guess. For dessert, we got the half size Flambe Crepe Suzette. Mini fire at the table when placed down and not too boozey tasting with the grand Marnier added. We thought the half size was fine for us as we were not that hungry. Amazing food and chill atmosphere! The Sequel has a nice menu with vegeterian options, burgers, french and italian food. A good mix for picky eaters! Located near Coal harbour, finding the entrance is a bit tricky, just go inside what looks like the lobby of a building, the entrance is on the right Lovely vintage decoration, nice bar in the middle and a smaller dining room in the back after the kitchen. We had dinner in the small dining room, there was a Charlie Chaplin movie being projected on the wall. Our food was excellent. Probably the best food we had since we loved to Vancouver. Lots of flavours, riched and balanced. I have no complaints. The cocktails we tried were also very nice. Went for lunch on the weekend with my nephew and hubby. The service was friendly, and the place was nice, although I really hope they do something about the chairs making horrendous screeching noises as it drags across the tile floor... ouch! I had the savoury breakfast bowl... and it was HUGE! I actually think it would be better if they just served it on a plate because the bowl made it hard to eat as the pieces were too large to eat without using a knife and fork and the bowl just made it more difficult than necessary. The flavours and quality of ingredients were excellent, so I do recommend it. My husband had some sort of decadent deep fried chicken with a creamy gnocchi with a poached egg... it is super decadent and rich. If you like that sort of thing, it's delicious. However, I think it's probably something best shared, unless you are in your 20's and your metabolism and digestion can handle it, lol! My nephew has the smoked salmon bagel, which came with a lot of gorgeous vegetables. It was so huge, I don't see how anyone could actually take a bite successfully without unhinging your jaw. He said it was delicious, but yeah, the eating was a challenge, so maybe skip it if you're on a first date lol. Overall, we were really impressed with the quality and quantity of the food. They seem to have some aesthetic ideas of presentation that are getting in the way of the actual eating, so I hope they manage to figure that out. Atmosphere is plush, downtown vibe. Upon entrance, the huge bar occupies the central area of the space. One wouldn't suspect that there's more seating at the back. It's a nice space. Food is nicely presented. Some dishes are outstanding while most of them were lacklustre. *Garlic Escargot: this dish could use some salt. Escargots were swimming in butter and tasted too oily and bland. The thick toast were yummy though. *Burrata Cheese & Beet Purée Spring Salad: again this dish tasted flat. Beetroot purée was not outstanding. There's no hint of tanginess, citrus nor saltiness to contrast and enhance the bland burrata. *Miso-Glaze Sablefish: not bad. The pickled beets and pearl onions were a good side to complement the dish. *Bone-in Pork Chop: this is the WINNER of the night. It was tender, tasty and well brined/seasoned deep into the center of the pork chop. I will definite order this again. *Braised Beef Cheek: tender enough to hold its shape with a bit of a chew but demi glacé was a bit lacking in depth. Service is good. Trendy place that, like most trendy places, isn't really about the food. There are some good dishes here, but you have to order carefully. Went here with a party of 5 for dinner and tried a handful of dishes. Some big misses for us were the escargot (no flavour), triple berry mousse cake (not bad, just nothing to write home about), and the charcuterie plate (the cheeses were all fairly mild, not really too different than what you might get at Costco). The braised Oxtail was a hit, and didn't have the issue that a lot of wine braised dishes have, where the wine flavour overwhelms all the other flavours, and everyone preferred to the tiramisu to the berry mousse. Halfway through dinner, a live band came in and it became too loud to really hear anyone talking. That's probably what people are here for, but as folks who were there for the food and the conversation, that wasn't to our taste. I generally don't care about service and don't factor it into my rating unless it's terrible, but it's worth mentioning that the service was impeccable. They did rush us a bit because they had a reservation coming in at a later time, but I can't fault them for that and I think it's actually nice that they try to make sure you can get in at your reserved time. read more

We came for happy hour on a Thursday and it was empty when we arrived at 4pm. Service was great! Super friendly and fast The chicharon was really addictive. Loved the crunch and the dipping sauce it came with. Only complaint was that some of the pieces were kind of hard/ not fried properly. Great for snacking and to go with drinks Ribeye flatbread was okay. Nothing amazing. Ribeye didn't stand out. Pork belly tacos - meat was really tender. I like that it was really messy and fall apart in your hand. Could have had a bit more meat in it Calamari was well executed. Fried well. Not chewy Drinks were better than the food. The espresso martini was our favourite. Strong coffee flavour. Very smooth Their happy hour menu is quite large. Location is a bit out of the way but I don't mind it. The food across the board was ok. No showstoppers. Definitely get the chicharon and espresso martini. Good place to relax with friends. read more

I've been wanting to try The Sequel since I saw of the opening. Finally came around to trying it out. I did come for happy hour. They do have a happy hour menu which is the only one they offer during that time - the regular menu isn't provided during happy hour. I tried the Spring Flatbread (no mozzarella) and Plant-Based Cauliflower Wings Food: because we were just limited to their happy hour menu, my review is based off of this. I did enjoy both dishes got. The cauliflower wings had a bit of spicy kick to it but in a good way. It was not crazily spicy - a nice balance. The flatbread was a nice balance to keep the cool from the spiciness. My favourite part was the tomato chutney on the flatbread. Decor/aroma: I know Nox Restaurant used to be in this location previous to The Sequel coming in. Although I never got to try Nox while it was there, The Sequel seemed to do a great job in keeping the aroma (from what I hear). Small but beautiful and the vibe definitely felt classy but cozy. Service: for a restaurant that's fairly new, I feel like they did they best that they could, but I do feel like this is a part of the restaurant that could be worked on a little bit. Overall, if I could give a 3.5/5, I would. This is definitely a restaurant I want to come back to and give another chance. Of the restaurants we visited in Vancouver, this was our least favorite. We were not acknowledged by the waiter, who was past our table several times, for over 5 minutes. When we i formed him we had a celiac in our party, he said everything could be made GF. After ordering we discovered that was not the case and there were only 2 items that were GF. To the restaurant manager's credit, he did bring out a complimentary GF item to make up for the writer's error. The food was just OK. The portion sizes were nice (not too big). I had a pasta dish, my husband had lasagne, one friend had lobster bisque, and one had one of the GF items. The atmosphere was nice, but the wow factor was just not there. read more

I ordered the Titanic and changed the protein to smoked salmon for $2 more. The smoked salmon was extremely generous and thick cut. The scones were the perfect blend of savory and slightly sweet. I really enjoyed my meal here and can't wait to go back. There were so many dishes that I wanted to try. A couple of things that I would give feedback on was that I found that the tables were placed extremely close together. It felt a bit uncomfortable to have a proper conversation with someone without feeling like you were either making your neighbors have to listen to your conversation or vice versa to have to hear your neighbor's conversation. The other piece of feedback would be that they should serve more than 4 pieces of potatoes. They tasted so good, but I found that the portion for the potatoes were too small. read more

I guess this place is still in "soft opening" so I'll withhold final judgment, but I was expecting more. The preview menus online looked great, but we went for lunch/brunch, and there wasn't anything terribly exciting. I ended up ordering the "Duck Confit Hash and Chilli-Fried Egg: duck leg confit, red onion, green chilli, flat-leaf parsley, broccolini, blackberry sauce, hashbrown, a sunny side up egg. ". With the word "hash" in the description--twice--I was expecting... well, hash. The dish consisted of a confit leg and thigh of duck, and about ten smashed but definitely not hashed potatoes. The "green chili" was several thin slices of jalapeno resting on the egg. It was okay, but certainly not as described. It was certainly the most inaccurately described dish I've ever had. On the plus side, the build-out is lovely, and the service was good. A bar dominates the surprisingly small room, and the cocktails are creative and well-prepared. read more

What a lovely experience my girl friend and I had at The Sequel. Our server, Anneliese, was wonderful - answered all of our questions and assured that everything tasted good. She came and checked on us at a good time interval. Not too frequent, but also not completely forgetting about us either. Just right. The food was so good. We had the comfy hash with chilli fried egg and the fried chicken Benny. They were both delicious. I was craving an iced chocolate (like a hot chocolate, but on ice) so I asked The waitress if we could if they could accommodate and make one. The bartender was happy to make something for me special and it was also delicious. They have a great three course menu option for weeknight evenings that I definitely want to check out. It looks like a really great deal - three courses for $29.99. The interior design and decor is very nice as well. Definitely nicer than a pub or the average restaurant. I came here for a birthday brunch during their soft opening. The atmosphere was relaxing and although we stayed for a few hours chatting, we never felt rushed to leave. We ordered crab cake bennies off their brunch menu and the eggs were nice and runny. I loved the beef pappardelle, the 7 hour slow braised short rib was so tender and the goat cheese added a creamy texture. They gave us a complimentary birthday cheesecake, which was appreciated. Decided to try out The Sequel for brunch - at the time of visit they were in their "soft launch", so I'll have to re-visit later to determine a true review. Aesthetically the restaurant is stunning and very instagrammable. The menu too sounds all too appetizing. The restaurant always seems quite busy both when walking by and during my visit. After forage closed, I was looking for a new scone spot and tried their cheese and chive scone. It was fine 3/5 - very mild flavour. I had to ask for butter which I assumed would've been accompanied by a scone order (or even jam). To eat, I had the crab cake benny. There was nothing wrong it with it but it lacked flavor and that is from someone who typically prefers more bland foods. There was your typical melon with a piece of strawberry fruit salad and some smashed/baked potatoes. My friend had the Egg in Purgatory. She too said the dish was fine but lacked flavour. I tried the sauce which reminded me of a marinara pasta sauce. Service was attentive and good. I'd be curious to try this place for dinner and maybe once they refine everything. read more

first foodie outing for a and i for 2025! this is a sister restaurant to the story café in richmond. it's still in the soft opening phase but the restaurant was def busy when we arrived. there are minor hiccups - as one would expect during a restaurant's soft opening - dirty cup, missing fork and slow(ish) service. i chalk it up to the restaurant being rly busy because they did clean up a few tables VERY quickly during our time there. im hopeful for the establishment as we all know how grim the restaurant industry is right now. the restaurant have a very retro 40-50's vibe with charlie chaplin playing on the projector and jazz as the background music. we started with drinks - my rosemary&fennel collins was good - sweeter than i would like but it was delish nonetheless. a had the francis coppola chardonnay - too oaky for me tbh. we both switched to a red after to pair with our mains - my gamay was on the lighter side and a's cab sauvignon was as full-bodied as one would expect frm a cab for starters, we had the bacon jam and crab cakes. we DEVOURED the bacon jam - it was sweet, savoury and VERY onion-y. the strawberries helped to cut the savouriness of the dish, and we HAD to order more crostinis to finish off the jam - loved that the crostinis are made-to-order. for mains, we had the beef wellington and the signature risotto. the beef Wellington was a little overcooked - we asked for medium and it seemed like it was a medium well. nonetheless, the beef was still very tender and duxelles was done nicely. we loved the jus that came with the wellington - we cleaned the plate of it. the signature risotto had a superb presentation - the green frm the pesto and the red/orange frm the shrimp. the scallops were done perfectly, and i loved the pesto in the risotto - i did find the cheese to be a bit overpowering. for dessert, we got the crêpes suzette flambé - we love theatrics! we both found the whipping cream to be borderline ice cream temperature- something that we weren't expecting. the ratio of the whipping cream was a bit off as well - i think the dish would be better off with a scoop of actual ice cream on top instead? despite the hiccups, i loved my time at the sequel - looking forward to checking out brunch and happy hour here! read more

5 stars are not enuf. Decor was sleek and smart, yet cozy. Staff was super. My scallop ceviche was fresh, crisp and delicious, with a mild hint of jalapeño. My spare rib pappardelle was rich and flavorful -- pasta just right. And my wife raved about her lasagne so I took a bite; rich and meaty. They have a very extensive wine list, but Tuesday (and ?) are half-priced bottles on perhaps two dozen bottles. I opted for the GD Vajra Barbera d' Alba, normally a very reasonable C$45, but at C$22.50 a steal. That's a bottle for about the price of glass and a half in the US.
