great recommendation from a friend. the three of us stopped in for brunch after a moderate hike nearby, which felt like a well deserved reward after working up an appetite. we arrived around 12:30 pm on a monday and were pleasantly surprised that there was no wait. we were seated right away and had plenty of time to settle in, catch up, and enjoy the slower pace of the afternoon. i was told this place used to be a tiny little shop, and it's nice to see how much they've grown. they've taken over the space next door and expanded the seating area, which makes a huge difference. you can actually relax, enjoy your meal, and have a proper conversation without feeling like you need to rush out the door so the next group can sit down. that extra breathing room really changes the experience. i was also happy to see they offer a matcha lavender latte with oat milk, which immediately caught my attention. unfortunately, we arrived too late for their early bird special, and i'm still a little disappointed about missing it. twelve dollars for a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich with a hashbrown patty and coffee or tea is hard to beat, and honestly, it gives me a good reason to wake up earlier next time. i decided on the vegetarian benny, and it absolutely hit the spot. two perfectly soft poached eggs, fresh avocado, oven roasted tomatoes, chimichurri, arugula, hollandaise, and cornbread, with three hashbrown patties on the side. every component worked together beautifully. the dish was seasoned really well, full of fresh flavours, and beautifully presented. the bright colours from the avocado, tomatoes, and greens made it look as good as it tasted. the chimichurri added a wonderful freshness, the hollandaise was rich without being overwhelming, and the cornbread brought a subtle sweetness that balanced everything nicely. it was so good that i practically inhaled the entire plate. definitely a place i'd come back to. next time, though, i'm setting an alarm and making sure i arrive early enough to finally try that early bird special. read more

Brunch place at the top of Burnaby Heights. Heard a lot about it but took a while to try as they have really short business hours (breakfast/lunch only). Parking is available on the side streets. The dining area is divided into 2 distinct sections. Looks like they took over the adjacent business space and knocked out a doorway. Staff are friendly and cheerful. No complaints. I wasn't sure what to try, so I had the kitchen sink. Might as well try a mix of everything. As per the menu, it was 2 eggs, sautéed red onions, red peppers, kale, green onions, sausage, bacon, cheese, hashbrowns. Reminded me of eating an omelette that fell apart. Gray Olive Cafeteria is a bright and simple brunch spot that serves a variety of classic, but well-executed brunch dishes and drinks. The popularity of the place showed as we waited almost an hour for a table today (granted it was a stat), with people continuing to flow in while we were dining. My boyfriend explained that they were originally a small diner, but later upgraded to more spacious seating. The waitress (who was also hostessing) was kind and apologetic for the wait. After we sat down and ordered, the food arrived very quickly. The chicken and waffles immediately caught our eye as it seemed almost one person at every table had ordered it. For $1.75, you can also opt to have your chicken made spicy, and it was very worth it! I also really liked the waffles, despite usually preferring chewier waffles. These waffles had a crispier bite, but were fragrant and delicious regardless. The crab cake benny was also a delicious umami bomb with great textures and flavours. Keep in mind, there probably isn't a lot of actual crab (mostly imitation from what I saw and tasted), but it still tasted good. One standout was the hashbrown potatoes. They were perfectly seasoned and so crispy! I also appreciated that everything wasn't too salty and perfectly seasoned for my asian taste buds. My last visit was pre-covid and they have since expanded into the previous insurance business location so there was tons more seating room, a welcome surprise. I ordered the classic platter and thai iced yin yang with oat milk. The drink was not particularly strong in either flavour but on its own was a tasty drink. The platter was pretty good an came with a full serving of potatoes that I couldn't finish as it was huge. Everything was cooked well and it was tasty. Service was friendly and waters were topped up. I heard about this place several years ago but never got to try it until now. Mainly because it is always busy. Maybe it is slightly better now with a waitlist function on Google. We finally got to try the food here as we came in before 10 am. There were only 2 free tables at 940 am and it was full house by 10 am. So either come early when it opens or use the waitlist function. The menu is fairly simple with the typical brunch items like the egg Benny, chicken waffle, big breakfast, pancakes and sandwiches. I'm actually glad the menu is not very big as it makes narrowing down the items to try easier. I initially wanted the chicken and waffle because fried chicken. Who can say no to that? Then I saw lemon ricotta pancakes. Oh my! I have not had that since Bills in Sydney, Australia. The pancakes were very fluffy and the lemon flavor was strong. The whipped cream was light and the honey butter and syrup went well. My friend had the chicken and waffle, so I got to try the fried chicken. It was nicely seasoned and crispy. The meat was not too dry. The waffle was also very fluffy. Service was good, they came round often to check and to top up the water glass. Good quality brunch is hard to come by and even harder to find something that is unique and not boring. @thegrayolive, not only do you get great cookery, the dishes we tried was unique in its choice of protein, garnishes, and sauces. Thick cut pork belly, pan seared to perfect crispyness, is hard to say no to, especially when paired with well poached eggs. The potatoes were nice as well, with great taste and even better texture. I started off with their seasonal pumpkin pie latte, it's such a comforting fall drink. Their veggie benny was delicious, I like that it's served with a biscuit instead of an English muffin and you have several sides to choose from: fries, hashbrowns, tomato soup, fruit, green salad or poutine. This place was honestly a pleasant surprise! The unique menu brought us in for a late breakfast. The shop was bright and clean with simple decor. I appreciated that they were cleaning well between diners and offer a good amount of space between tables despite the small shop. My friend and I both really enjoyed our meals. She had a benny and I did the breakfast sandwich with garlic aioli instead of black truffle. The eggs were cooked perfectly with fresh scallion and the bacon was more like pork belly. What they call hash browns are more like home fries and perfectly crispy and seasoned and delicious. They were also not at all greasy. I have no idea how they made them. After reading all these great reviews, our experience at The Gray Olive was so unexpectedly disappointing. We were seated promptly at a table without cutlery. After a few minutes the server came by and dumped four sets of cutlery and napkins on the table and walked away. 20 minutes later, she came to take our drink order. When we said we were also ready to order our meals, she said we could wait until after we received our drinks. After such a long wait, we said no, we'd prefer to order now. She seemed confused but took our order. I ordered a drip coffee, and another server came by with the pot ... unfortunately I couldn't have any because I didn't have a cup. Finally, a cup 3/4 filled with coffee arrived. No cream or sugar. A few minutes later, we managed to flag down a different server to ask for cream. She returned with a small pitcher containing about 2tbsp of cream. Okay.... 3/4 breakfasts came. The only condiment on the table was ketchup. The food was all right, nothing special. We had to ask where the other breakfast was, and the server seemed confused as to why we were asking. The fried chicken was almost inedibly greasy, and the hash browns were the frozen squares that come out of a bag. Neither here nor there. We asked for pepper ... we got one package of pepper. We asked for more pepper ... we got five more packages, three of which were empty. And three packages of salt for four people. We were never asked how our meals were, and I never got more coffee. The restaurant itself has no concern for acoustics and is EXTREMELY loud. We kept having to repeat ourselves to the servers. There were two servers, both of which seemed like it was their first day on the job. There were two good things about the meal. One were the fries. Those had a kind of peri-peri spice on them and were fresh and tasty. The other was my poached egg, which was perfectly soft poached. All in all, that brunch was over $100, money I wish we'd spent elsewhere. I would not recommend The Gray Olive and would not return. read more

The Gray Olive absolutely never disappoints for breakfast/brunch. We've tried almost everything on their menu and have loved it all (except maybe the red stuff on the crab cake Benny). Their hashbrown patties (limited time offering, apparently) have a unique and delicious flavour due to the spices they use... Yummm!! The serving staff are also extremely nice and good to deal with. We've never had a bad experience, ever. We would probably continue to go there every week, but the menu isn't that big and we don't want to get sick of stuff. I was a first-time customer at the Gray Olive today, but I can see myself frequenting this establishment a lot more in the future. While I cannot comment too much on the service since I only ordered takeout, the employees I encountered weren't unfriendly by any means. As for the food - I can enthusiastically comment that the fried chicken sandwich was one of the best I've in recent memory. They use chicken thigh and not chicken breast, which is a decision that I feel passionately about - always thigh over breast for sandwiches; it makes for a juicier bite. Brioche bun, tomato, lettuce were all good, but the pickles! The pickles in the sandwich were the perfect complement to the savory fried chicken - deliciously sweet and crunchy. This is coming from someone who doesn't even normally like pickles. The steelhead salmon eggs Benedict was also a hit with my grandma. She appreciated the generous amount of salmon given, as well as the fact that it was served on a biscuit and not an English muffin. The hashbrowns were the perfect texture and the seasoning was on point - highly recommend this as a side. I also got the daily soup special, which was a curry cauliflower. Bold flavors, but my only complaint would be that it was way too salty. I added hot water when I got home though, and then it was perfect. While not a cheap option, The Gray Olive definitely offers bang for its buck, and it's open during this social distancing time. I would say it's kind of a hole in the wall place as it's local, small and cozy and you may not notice it walking by, but it is a gem! They don't have a ton of menu options but I think that's the best as they focus on what they make best. Ambience: large open kitchen in the back. Well ventilated as we didn't smell like the food afterwards. Minimal decor. Decor: small dining area. About 7 couple tables that can be transformed into quad tables. We ordered Chicken & Waffle ($21.25) and Pulled Pork Benny with hash brown ($19). Food was ready in less than 10mins. Food, portion, taste: - Chicken & Waffle ($21.25): meaty slabs of chicken and waffles. The whipped butter is delicious. The batter on chicken is crunchy but soft inside. The chicken is juicy. - Pulled Pork Benny with hash brown ($19): pulled pork and egg are nicely done. The cornbread is a bit too crumbly for me. They used a bit of jalapeno in the cornbread. The pulled pork sauce is not bad and didn't overpower it. Hollandise sauce is rich, but not overtly. Hashbrowns are fried to perfection - not over fried, have structure, and soft inside. Great place to go for lunch or brunch! Although, seating is limited and it can get quite busy, so I don't go as often as I would like. I have two go-to items, the pork belly breaky sandwich and the avocado toast; the former for when I'm feeling a bit more decadent and the latter for when I want to eat healthy. Over the past few months, I've come to really appreciate perfectly done eggs--be it poached, marbled, etc. About a third of the time I go out for brunch, the eggs fail to have a rich, runny centre like I desire. The Gray Olive never disappoints! The Gray Olive also allows for customizations! I don't like tomatoes, which are in both the pork belly breaky and the avocado toast, so I always remove them. This little brunch nook in my neighbourhood is just PERFECT. I haven't gotten a chance to come to this place until recently. And I really love it btw. I came here with some friends from Toronto, to show them Burnaby Heights & Brentwood. So I had to find a little brunch place. Being in the chapter of the pandemic, the waiters checked all of our Vaccine QR codes properly, and they only limited to 4 people per table. Each table had their own little plastic borders and I approve of this! I love the décor of the restaurant as it is very modern and very chic. And their lattes were DELICIOUS. I ordered a matcha latte with oat milk and it was very foamy and delicious. I love a good oat milk foam. I ordered The Crab Cake Benny and I shared it with my friend who got a Pulled Pork Benny. They were both very delicious, and it comes with a side of choice. I got the hash browns and my friend got a Poutine. I wasn't expecting this form of hashbrowns, but it was delicious. And I got some siracha dipping sauce on the side. The eggs on the crab cake bennys were perfectly poached and cooked as I sliced open them. The yolk melted perfectly over my hashbrowns and the whole crab cake. The surprising thing as well was that the platter was HUGE. maybe a bit too much for a lot of me and my friends. So that is a plus! I will be coming back next time, maybe ordering take out. And hearing about all the reviews about their Chicken & Waffles, I might get that. The eggs were perfectly poached and the Hollandaise was flawless. I love that you can choose between fries, hashbrowns, fruit, or soup as your side. The soup of the day was a clam, potato, leek and corn soup, and it was the most perfect chowder I've ever had. Their chicken and waffles were also a delight. Two massive pieces of fried chicken with a perfectly seasoned, crunchy batter. I have never had better fried chicken. The Sriracha ketchup was a fun sauce on the side. It was our first time to come here for brunch today. We realized that there was a lineup and at least a few tables in front of us. We came all the way here to try their brunch, so we decided to put down our name, ordered a couple of latte and waited outside the restaurant (because the space is very small and tight inside). The crispy potatoes were placed in a bowl separately from the ham hock Bennys. The portion of the potatoes was quite big. The kitchen sink was so good that each ingredient mixed well together to become a better dish. Two poached eggs on top of the kitchen sink were so soft and tasty. The portion was quite big overall, so we had to pack some of the leftover home. I saw some people's reviews here that they felt the pricing was a bit high. Indeed I personally felt the price was average with a bigger portion. I would highly recommend eating brunch here instead of lunch (i.e. sandwiches and burgers). Came here on a weekday and was glad to see that there was no line! I tried out their avocado toast, GO potatoes and the chicken, bacon sandwich. The avocado toast was very standard with ripe green mashed avocado and a nice balanced drizzle of balsamic atop some sliced tomatoes. The chicken and bacon sandwich was also alright with the brioche bread nicely toasted and a sizeable chicken breast (although I shared and received the much smaller piece) leaving myself with quite a bit of bread. There wasn't anything really special about this sandwich but it was good. The GO potatoes were fried very crispy and although oily, did not eat greasy which I appreciated. My friend had the Korean Fried Chicken sandwich and the chicken was dry and seemed to be "refried" to order. She said it was only okay. I've been here 3 times and I forgot to review my last visit (which I would have also given 5 stars). I ordered the exact same things as last time and I was not disappointed. I ordered the pork belly breakfast sandwich and had a side of the G.O potatoes. The pork belly was perfectly cooked, juicy, and flavorful-it's delicious (you won't be disappointed!). The G.O potatoes are a weakness of mine because it's extremely rare to find a brunch spot that can cook breakfast potatoes properly. I'm super picky with "hash browns" because I expect a perfectly cooked hash brown to have a crispy outside and the inside being nice and soft (some places will either be overly deep fried, where there is no longer any potato inside or the outside is soft and super greasy)-the gray olive perfectly nailed it with the perfect amount of crispiness and seasoning. These 2 dishes are my go-to favorites. My partner had the kitchen sink and loved it last time and again this time. They do great lattes as well. I know it may seem like I'm over hyping this place, but I give credit if it's truly deserved. This place deserves 5 stars based on my experience eating here. The staff are friendly, the food is consistent, and I'm happy to see this place doing so well. A heads up this place can get pretty busy on the weekend, so my suggestion is to check this place out during the week if you can. They have this amazing looking chicken sandwich that is only offered during the week- it has crackling on top and it comes with a side of gravy. Very tasty brunch... There were a few items I wanted to try from the menu, but settled on the G O platter. Everything on the plate was tasty, but I don't think to my taste the sausage didn't add to the experience (it was super good though). Would definitely go back again! read more

My husband and I decided to have late Sunday brunch at Gray Olive Cafeteria in North Burnaby. It was easy to find along Hastings and the queue wasn't so bad at 2pm (they close at 3pm on Sundays). It was our first time but it was easy to get the flow of it. Once it's your turn and a table or bar seats have opened up, they would assign them to you by pointing it out. You place your order on the counter first then take your seat and wait for them to serve your order/s. Menu on the weekends would be their breakfast and brunch options (they don't serve their lunch menu). I ordered The G.O. Breaky Sandwich with bacon, cheese and avocado. While the hubby ordered The Kitchen Sink. I wanted to try their Spanish Latte but they weren't serving espresso based drinks at that time so we opted for brewed coffee instead. Unfortunately, it was watered down and no amount of sugar and cream could save it. Frankly, I should've just waited for them to start serving espresso drinks again. My husband took a sip and set the coffee aside while he ordered another drink- Iced Thai Tea. He said that it was good. In line with being a "cafeteria," they serve the food on aluminum trays lined with parchment paper. Presentation is nothing to write home about tbh. My sandwich was good, a bit messy to eat but it was tasty (not mind blowing though). Hubby said that he liked the Kitchen Sink. It is an okay choice for brunch but there are other brunch places to try around Vancouver so it might be a while before I come back here. Also, price is a bit high for what you get.
