We waited for a table for an hour. Two glasses of Chardonnay at the bar and the manager could never find us table. Worst experience ever. The food looked average at best. I will never return and cannot recommend! read more

Atmosphere and customer service was outstanding!!! I ordered the chicken meatball & spaghetti and I didn't like it. It's a very popular dish, I just rather have ordered the meatloaf. That was amazing!! I ordered a Cadillac margarita and it was just ok. I will go back again, I just didn't order the correct items. read more

I love this place. One of my fave places in Dallas. The Newporter salad is a work of art. The only bad part is there is almost always a wait. But I guess good things are worth waiting for. read more

Waited for 30 minutes to be seated and as we are being escorted to our booth the waitress says we have to take our hats off. Is that not something the host should have told us 30 mins prior? I mean this is ridiculous. We mentioned it to the manager... he didn't even know what to say. Bad service and incompetent manager and host! Horrible service. Never going back. read more

The food at this place is very average yet pricier than it has any right to be. For a place called R&D Kitchen there was a surprising lack of creativity. All the entrees were served with broccoli, and it was lemon flavored which was gross. The positives I can take away is that the service was impeccable and the receipt paper was a very nice material. read more

Mixed experiences here. My husband loved his carnitas sandwich. But the chicken meatballs spaghetti with broccoli was plain weird. Waiter was okay friendly, but didn't make us feel welcome with our toddler (even though it was 5 pm). read more

Lunch yesterday at the bar was absolute perfection! I ordered the ahi tuna salad and a glass of the chardonnay on tap. Service was attentive and cordial, without being intrusive. Waitstaff was very busy and communicated well with each other to see that customer expectations were exceeded. I was by myself and felt totally fine alone. Restaurant is always clean and organized without being fussy. Highly recommend of food quality and service. read more

OMG. Wow. Holy Moley Texas this place is great. First the drinks while expensive were perfect - Margarita and Old Fashioned. Ordered the Chicken Meatballs and Wild Mushroom Meatloaf - Damn if this isn't brain food. Couldn't stop eating either. I'm full and still craving more. BTW check the photos. The "Osaka Style" Pressed Sushi is incredible. They seem to pre-make it which I don't want to know (lol) but it was super fresh and amazing as well. Chef - you and team kick ass! read more

I don't normally write reviews. Was finally compelled to write a review for R+D because of one thing. It is their REUBEN sandwich. I would put it up there as one of the best sandwiches in town by a long shot. Also the ambience is very modern twist on a mid-century impression. Perhaps it is the low ceilings but I really enjoy coming here and have enjoyed it for many years. read more

Stopped in for the first time and were not disappointed. One of the tastiest brunches we've had in a long time, and we try a new brunch location every Sunday. The Rubenesque and cole slaw were amazing. read more

Came here and am vegetarian. Not much to choose from. Got a chicken salad with no chicken for $19. Asked if I could sub chicken for avocado. Waitress had to check with manager, then came back and said, sorry, they'd have to charge us for the avocado. I mean, are you kidding? I'm not a fan of being nickle and dimed, so won't be coming back. read more

I can't say enough good things about this restaurant! The service was wonderful and the food was unlike anything I've ever had. It is obvious that this staff works so hard to provide the best food quality and service. Great job! I look forward to visiting again soon! read more

I always love R&D Kitchen the food and service are always very high quality. The only downside is it is pretty noisy but if you know that going in, you will have a great experience! read more

Cool restaurant but bad experience. Terrible service sitting at the bar last night. Definitely should have waited for a table instead of opting to eat at the bar. Food was pretty good but not worth the money they charge. Could get a better meal (sushi or otherwise) for the same price somewhere else. Not recommended and probably not going back. read more

We had a great lunch. Both service and food was excellent. The deviled eggs appetizer was fantastic. The Rueben, ahí tuna salad, and chicken were all great choices. We will be back. read more

Really annoyed. Got to the restaurant at 6pm, it's fully packed. We decide to go to the bar, there was an empty seat so we got it. The person next to me was making out with an old man; A blonde girl who kept picking her nose and seemed on drugs. Took them 30 minutes until the guy persuaded the drunk girl to uber with him, they left. I I bought a bottle of wine and several minutes prior to the other seats being open/the drunks and druggie left. The bartenders still inattentive. The waitress and waiter/ bartenders took forever to get our food order or even check up on us. Took forever for our food to come out. Unfortunately, the food is good but we don't ever want to come back. Really busy place, good food and crappy service, not worth the wait. read more

R&D Kitchen is our new favorite restaurant in Dallas! A Perfect lunch was found by my wife and I. Startters included the coconut shrimp roll. Followed by the Ruben and the Dings Chicken sandwhiches. The food, service, drinks and ambiance here are all amazing! It's a great spot for lunch or dinner. A few of my favs are the Cheeseburger, Osaka style pressed sushi (THE BEST) & the Filet. As far as drinks go, the Greyhound they make is amazing as well as their margarita. I also love their lemonade here, very fresh! Their fudge sundae for dessert is a must. You can't go wrong with any of the food here- it's all super tasty. The service is always great every time I go. Everyone is very friendly. I recommend calling in advance because there's usually a wait time. read more

We had dinner here last night. Our second time here. Overall good experience and friendly staff. It is absolutely absurd, antiquated and sexist that my female counterparts can wear a fashionable hat (not a baseball cap) in this establishment, yet I am told that I will need to remove mine in order to eat inside. That is now the last and final straw in regards to my and my close circles presence in this restaurant. The Hillstone Group CLEARLY needs to evolve and realize that these antiquated and unacceptable policies are about to start costing them not only an astronomical amount of money but their reputation. Bad form, truly bad form. I will continue to take my business and money down the block to Il Bracco where my head-ware is allowed inside and parties larger than 4 are welcome on the patio, no questions asked. read more

Such a great experience! Awesome customer service, our waiter was very friendly and eager to offer suggestions. The nigiri was delicious! Fresh wasabi and they make their own soy sauce! I wish they had a better wine list but consistently delicious food and servers that are almost always stellar. Its a unique place in that you can grab a quick casual bite or make it a more formal date night experience. On one hand, I'd like to see the menu change from time to time but on the other hand, every dish I've ever ordered has been really flavorful and nicely presented, and I find myself wanting to go back to eat the same things! Its just one of Dallas' best run restaurants and always a fun dining experience. read more

I'm teetering between 3 and 4 stars on this one; the food was really great and I was impressed with the unique options, but unfortunately the service downright sucked. A colleague and I ducked into R+D for lunch on a busy Tuesday afternoon around 12:30. Geez, I should have made a reservation! There were at least a dozen people waiting outside in the heat for a table and the place was stuffed to the brim with lots of Ladies Who Lunch and business meetings. We were lucky enough to grab the last two seats at the bar. She got a club soda (which came in a cute personal bottle) and I got an iced tea. Then we waited. And waited. Finally, we were able to order an appetizer but before we could spit out our entrees the bartender walked away. The dip came out quickly - I loved it! The guac was super chunky with a fresh lime taste, and the cold queso (pimento cheese-like stuff) was a big pile of deliciousness. In fact, it's a week later and I'm still hunting the internets for the recipe. About halfway through demolishing that, we finally ordered our entrees. The salad was one of the best I've ever had. Huge shaved chunks of cheese; moist, fresh, succulent chicken; awesome spring lettuce and a flavorful dressing all combined to make a flavor that popped in my mouth. Delicious! However, we were rarely checked on and I felt like we were always waiting on something (to order food, refills, etc). The bartenders couldn't have been more unhappy to be there and I heard several of them sigh or bitch about something more than once. What a shame. Just be prepared for the price point. Our tab for two non-alcoholic drinks, the duo dip, two salads and tip was over $50. Ouch! read more

6 years I have had a love affair with R+D. Different days, different times, dates, friends, meetings. Staff is on Point. Exceptional Service Always. This spot is perfection. (Other than the parking and the almost 30 somethings that have aged poorly along with their attitudes.) Let me help you, put this place on rotation. Yes it is a Hillstone Concept and Yes that location is in the same Square. (The other going up in Highland Park Village will primarily be a bar, so stoked) Here is how to Menu. Devil Eggs, Check! Pine Room Salad, Check! Sushi, Absolutely, Check! I am not a lover of cooked fish but I think they make love to the salmon before they bring it to you bc I have to uncross my legs it makes me so happy, I mean, Check! Brussel Sprouts all day, Check! If you want to live on the dangerous side of life, mix your hot lightly coated fatted up B Sprouts with your Pine Room Salad and let the fig date action heat up and bite on that. You are welcome! I am usually on a Hot Tea with Lemon Sipping bc of money conversations, but I have hopped on the Vino here.....um Yes. The Bar is Perfect for Two, Sushi or Beverage. If you slide into a booth enjoy the look on on the dining room and the overhang of the wood. It is a little noisy in here, but hey, when you know, you know. read more

I met a friend at Cafe R+D for an early dinner/happy hour for her birthday. I arrived and sat at the mostly empty bar to have a glass of wine while I waited. After a couple of tastings to decide which I wanted and great conversation from the bartender, Betty, I settled in on a good chardonnay (white is the appetizer wine, you know). My friend showed up and we decided to sit in one of the bar tables with full view of the bar and entrance for the best people watching. The whole restaurant was very beautiful, in a laid back, cool sort of way. I think it has the Houston's vibe, only tweaked... much more light, open and airy, but still warm. It had many interesting options for places to sit... the open banquettes next to the windows, the fun bar, great patio outside, the tables next to the kitchen, the tables a little deeper in the restaurant that have the gorgeous rounded wooden ceiling (teak?)... I really want to go back and try them all, because I think your experience could be different in each little spot of this small restaurant. We were feeling like ordering a bottle of wine and some appetizer-snacks. After some good guidance from the waiter (I feel like I know a lot about wine but recognized very few bottles on the menu, which is so cool) we got a nice bottle of red. Their wine glasses are not "wine glasses" in the true sense with the stems, they are small glasses. Kind of like the Riedel "O" but with a bit more of a bottom. I dig that. For snacks, we had the french fries, a spicy tuna roll, and the duo dip (which was guacamole and a cheesy dip that sort of reminded me of spicy pimento cheese) with chips. The fries were probably my favorite part, which reminded me a lot of Houston's shoestring fries. I can admit that in the light of day, the whole guacamole/spicy tuna roll/french fries/chips/pimento cheese flavors were pretty bizarre but at the time, total comfort food. For dessert we had the bananas foster pie. Awesome. The graham cracker crust had bits of chocolate in it, the pie itself was a great combination of banana, whipped cream and caramel. Yum! I can't wait to go back, bring 5 friends and sit in one of the big banquettes and have a proper meal. All of the food that was being served around me looked amazing! ***** Ooooh! One more thing! The cool bartender, Betty, told me they have a fantastic brunch on Saturdays and Sundays that goes until 4pm with lots of mimosas and bloody marys and other great brunch drinks. Awesome! read more

For those of you in a hurry, I'll break this down relatively quickly in this first paragraph: yes, R+D Kitchen deserves five stars. No, I did not try their sushi. Yes, there probably is something wrong with me for coming here and not popping a few rolls of the stuff into my mouth. And yes, the worst part about coming here is remembering where the blasted "+" sign is on your keyboard when you want to write about how outstanding a visit here can be. Take those tidbits of information with you, make a reservation and enjoy! Now, for everyone else still reading after that bit of exposition theatre up there, let's move into a more detailed recap of my first time coming here. Located right across the parking lot from their sister restaurant, Hillstone, R+D Kitchen exudes style and hipness before you even walk in the door. In fact, there was considerable debate if I was technically cool enough to enter before my folks and I walked in for lunch on Saturday. Nonetheless, the three of us entered into the warm glow of a restaurant that has service down to a (welcoming) science. The place is kind of a mishmash of seating areas, with a handful of booths off to your left, more tables to the right, a sprawling theatre-in-the-round bar near the middle and an aisle of booths on a slightly elevated back wall. And these seats fill up fast. The hostess who greeted us when we walked in probably put on a good 27 miles in the time we were there, walking parties to their tables with efficiency and friendliness. And this was right when the doors opened. (Actually, we totally cheated and walked in at 10:57 because we're rebellious like that.) In no time at all, Lawren came by to greet us and we knew right away we were in great hands. With the patience of a saint, Lawren graciously handled our plentiful first-timer-questions and made sure everything was to our liking. She was also backed by a food runner who navigated the aisles as if he was the reincarnation of Fred Astaire, as well as a gal on refill duty who I'm convinced was part ninja, as my water glass would suddenly be full after I paused to blink. Basically, the whole team here fires on all cylinders and probably accomplishes more in one morning shift than I will in all of 2016. But all the positive gushing about prime service levels amounts to nothing if the food is not there to support the experience. And, honestly, I had my doubts right out the gate with the noted Dip Duo appetizer. My folks loved this chilled queso and guacamole combo but I couldn't help thinking it was missing something. That vague claim quickly fled the confines of my brain as the chicken meatballs came out and instantly made me join the other two as a firm believer in the culinary skills of the R+D Kitchen staff. As for the non-sushi entrees we got, each one was polished off the plate pretty quickly. The spinach and cheese omelet looked good - I'm allergic to spinach, and being that I did not feel like killing myself, I opted to stick to my vantage point of shoveling the Greek-style chicken into my mouth as fast as my knife and fork would let me. This dish was phenomenal, and apparently the reuben sandwich was equally tasty. Toss in a side of fries for the table and you have a lunch that should probably come with a disclaimer warning that "side effects may include mid-afternoon napping but it's totally worth it so keep eating." What else... The bathrooms are modern to the point where I did a double-take to make sure I actually was pressing on the door to get into the mens' restroom. The coffee carafes challenge the laws of physics in how they're built and I want one for my desk. Oh, and the ninja water-refiller came by even after we tabbed out, which was a nice gesture and beats the heck out of restaurants that basically eject you from the dining room after you've paid. At the end of the day, R+D Kitchen has a formula that works, a staff that works even harder and a presentation that seems poised for newcomers, as well as regulars. It's an easy recommendation for a place to grab a bite to eat, drink or remind yourself that there is a "+" key on your keyboard. read more

Sometimes I think 3 stars gets a bad rap. Our dining was a-ok. We came on a Wednesday night and didn't have to wait for a table. We opted to share a few apps and then order individual entrees. To start we had the deviled eggs, thai tuna and seared tuna. Everyone has deviled egg on their menu now- I'm kind of over it. The thai tuna had macadamia nuts in it for a good crunch and used soy paper. It had nice flavor and even one of our diners that doesn't like sushi enjoyed it. The seared tuna had a fruit and veggie salad in the middle with hunks of mango, jalapeno, jicama and cucumber. I enjoyed that more than the roll. For dinner I had the filet and it was delicious. There was a good sear on the steak and just enough salt. That steak was the best thing I ate all night. For dessert we shared the carrot cake. It was not good- it tasted as if it had dried out? Perhaps it was pre-sliced? Service was really great. I liked the restaurant and it's decor. We had an enjoyable meal. The food was just hit or miss. read more

I really have never had a great experience here... and this time was no different. For instance: After my friends and I all ordered cheeseburgers and fries (yes, we are fatties, but yes, it is delish), the waiter really pushed hard for us to try the "secret sauce." Like seriously, this is not McDonald's, but ok, we'll try it. He went on and on and on about how great the sauce is for the fries. JEEZE! Like really, on and on and on. So we all got our burgers and fries. Slowly we start... waiting on this special secret sauce and of course, some damn ketchup. Nothing. Wait, small bite, wait. Nothing. Ok, time to inhale. We're starving. This is not rocket science. He came by to apologize and said he'd send it over right away. We were practically done by then. But another 5 minutes go by. AND NOTHING. We finish EVERYTHING. Another waiter, not even our original waiter, brings over the sauce and ketchup. Is this a joke? Not to mention he told us he was so, so sorry and he'd pay for the fries. Well clarify buddy... you only paid for one order of fries, not both. We were done with this place after two hours of BS. I won't be returning... even though the bar area is nice and the burger is good. Life is too short. read more

This dining establishment is SO overrated. First time we dined there and our last. The spicy tuna roll was not spicy and the soy sauce they served with it tasted like vinegar. The cheeseburger was dry and so was the bun and the taste was below average for $19.00 There was nothing special about the Asian Chicken Salad. It was very bland. Customers wearing trucker hats, flip flops and athletic wear was not what we wanted to look at while paying the expensive prices they charge. Will never go back. read more

Dear Research and Development, You put cocktail sauce in your Bloody Maries. You are a genius as this added flavor made me want to eat one million shrimps. All my life I've been drinking cocktail sauceless bloodies. What an idiot I am. Added jalapenos put mine over the edge of bloody competitions. Menu is very simple and all the flavors are splendidly sharp, satisfying, fresh and healthy, but chances are not low in the calorie tot-um pole. I loved the ambiance of the sunny happy light wood lodge patio. Somehow my eyes are gullible and if you are saddling the bar area and looking back, the roof is designed to make you feel like you are on a fancy porch patio outside, when you are actually indoors. Genius! Deviled Eggs = creamy and chunky at the same time. Yummy! Desserts: I watched some middle school kids saddled at the bar chow down on a sundae that came equipped with a vat of chocolate sauce. This family must have been rich in cash and sweet tooths as each child sat with their own giant dessert in complete silence, savoring their magic temple of sugar with serious faces like they were taking the SAT. Lucky kids. I cannot believe they all ate every bite and licked the chocolate vat. I'm very impressed by this family. read more

I have to agree with most of those who have reviewed this place in dissent, or people who I'll refer to as not taking kindly to being hoodwinked. $18 for salad is as criminal as putting pre-calculated tips on your check. What else is criminal? Charging human beings their time and money to eat oatmeal at a restaurant. Oatmeal is what we feed to the animals that in turn feed us with their sweet sweet deliciousness. Do not cut out the pork middle man. It serves no one's best interest. Even the hog would agree. R+D appears to be of typically Preston pretense, but it appears that it is much like the Dallas trophy wives in their dining room. All looks and no real substance. The real head scratcher is the menu itself. This is what happens when you consult Mike Leach when formulating one. Another oddity to this place is the waitstaff by committee approach. I had 4 waiters. One to greet me, one to bring me iced tea, one to take my order and one to square up. By the end of the ordeal I felt like I was sponsoring Ndugu's whole family with my meager tip. This apron wearing clan also had a perplexing dislike for used sugar packets sullying their fair tabletops. It was bewildering. Our used sugar packets were swept off our table in mere seconds. Like we were being watched & timed. Suddenly I felt like I was on Arrakis and I just laid down some free spice for the first person to show up and claim it. By the end of the meal, I actually tried to hide a used packet behind the peppermill, and those waiters sniffed that sucker out. R+D had its moments, it was peculiarly entertaining. Bottom line though, they'll have to do better than a Breakfast Jack with arugula to earn my business again. read more

I knew I wanted to try this place but I also knew I wasn't too keen on it's sister Houston's that everyone raves so much about. We went kind of on a whim on our way to pick up the Christmas Honey Baked Ham. I had NO idea how picky my dad had gotten about eating food until they came up for Christmas...it was very sad for me. I tried to take them all kinds of cool places but he didn't like much of it--next time I'm sticking exclusively with places like Keller's and Red Hot and Blue! Anyway, we popped in here for lunch and had a fairly expedient meal. We didn't really see the server armies either, although there were several people who came to our table throughout the course of the meal. Our waiter wasn't the greatest, but we were more in the mood for conversation anyway, and just needed our waiter to bring us our food :) We started out with the deviled eggs, which were pretty delicious (although I like mine a teensy-weensy bit warmer so they melt in my mouth more). My mom and I split the tuna salad MONSTER sandwich (not labeled as such on the menu but it was double decker that came with three halves! We had a hard time finishing it.) I also ordered a side of spinach, which came with fresh parmesan I think, and it was REALLY good. I bet kids (or husbands) would love it if you can't get them to eat their veggies!! My dad had the cheeseburger which he started to order well done, until I encouraged him to get it medium. Well, my dad obliged but apparently only likes his well done. D'oh. I tried it and thought it was DELICIOUS, my dad was worried he was going to get mad cow. He also didn't really like the bbq sauce on it. I typically don't like bbq sauce on my burgers either but this was really not very much and I actually thought it added just the right amount of tanginess. BUT, all that said, he liked this place more than any of the others (Besides Greek Isles) that I took him to during their stay. They had some delicious sounding brunch menu items as well--definitely want to come back for those and for dinner sometime. The bar also appeared to have a multitude of fresh ingredients for some hopefully tasty cocktails and drinks. The other thing I wanted to comment on was the architecture. The place is all a light colored wood with LOTS of windows/glass walls so it almost feels like you're outside!! Very cheery, so cheers to R+D and I hope I get to come back soon! read more

So many great things to say about R&D! Amazing service. You know how you eat your appetizer and then have to either save your dirty fork for the main course or if you let your server take it and then wait and beg for a clean one while your hot food gets cold? These servers have telepathy or something. As soon as your server clears your table of a course, mysteriously a random person resets the table like magic with new silverware and plates! It's crazy! Food - small menu - which tells me that they have perfected the few things they offer instead of having a book of a menu with toooo many things to choose from. The meatloaf was amazing, the deviled eggs are just as everyone said - we had 3 orders of them! Ask for bread! It's delish too....and comes with this side of homemade dipping sauce-dressing. The filet was good, not the best I've ever had, but good nonetheless and the sides were really delish. Hard to believe this place is part of a chain....we will def be back. Loved it. read more

3pm on a Sunday. Texas summer. Obscenely hot. Practically empty restaurant. Promptly got kicked out because I was wearing a tank top. As I was walking out the door, I walked past three girls wearing workout attire, i.e., tank tops. I was told by a manager that they have a different policy for the ladies. Looking at their website, I can't find any mention of a dress code. In fact, the website states: "R + D is inspired by California's indoor/outdoor culture." If that's the case, they should be encouraging tank tops, shorts, and flip-flops. Their policy of no tank tops for men is both sexist and goes against my Second Amendment right to bare arms. read more

Totally unimpressed. This absurd extension of Houston's (mind you, I like Houston's) has a menu as devastatingly meager as it is incredibly overpriced. The only vegetarian option is a spinach and cheese omelet with potato salad. They are willing to remove meat from other options which is nice- my salad was actually decent but not worth $18! (spinach, cranberries, apples and cashews)... $3 coffee and soda! 2 salads and one cheeseburger with no sides came to 60 bucks with one soda, coffee and tax. I never have to come to Cafe R & D again. On the upside, they have really nice bathrooms. read more

This one is a bit hard to decide... really a 2.5 stars, so I'm rounding up. First... the location and building is absolutely beautiful. We really think it's a "neat" place... but lets get to the goods (food & service). I've been here a couple of times and the food I've ordered has been good. Their burger is amazing and the Rubenesque is the joint as well. But let talk reality: The Ruben Sandwich is $15. There are no sides with that... just the sandwich. So your $15 sammy will easily become over $20 if you require something else. Sorry, but corned beef ain't prime rib and there isn't some international shortage on swiss cheese and thousand island dressing. The sandwich is good, but totally falls apart from the left over grease/oil seeping through the bottom. IE: very messy. I didn't like the warm potato salad. It has some stuff that just doesn't jive well with me... stuff that's good in a chicken salad (grapes)... not potato. The deviled eggs were pretty darn good the day we had them. My wife ordered the Salad with the roasted chicken. That sucker cost $16. I've been to some of the world's finest places and I can tell you, this was no Sixteen Dollar Salad... especially when my wife is picking at RAW chicken. The service is borderline bad. They are just non-existant. If you order water, it comes in a extra small glass. I'll never understand this. I can see it if you are at some small place where you self serve your drinks and they want to make sure you aren't ordering water and filling it with dr. pepper... but no... this is what they do at this overpriced place. Back to the service: We waited about 10min for the waitress to come back and take our order. People that sat after us had already had better service. My tea sat empty for over 15min (most of the actual eat time) and was only refilled after I flagged the server down for our check. It also took her a very long time to return with my credit card so we could sign and get out. Like I said earlier, this is my 2nd time here and the 1st time was about the same. (no refills, slow service, etc.) I will say the hostess was extremely nice. Bottom line is this place is WAY overpriced for what you get and be careful of their undercooked chicken. read more

Don't waste your time or money. Immediately after being seated we were informed the kitchen closes in 20 minutes. My order of chicken meatballs with spaghetti and sauce on the side was rejected. "We serve it as is or with no sauce." But I only want a little sauce I'll take mine on the side. Can't do it, "it's the integrity of the dish". The most insane explanation ever. First from the waiter then the manager. Ended up eating their chicken sandwich, a McChicken would have been better. Chick-fil-A would have been a gourmet meal. Rude waiter, rude manager. Arrogance at its best. Stick with their other restaurant Hillstone, you are treated correctly and the food is wonderful read more
