I think Yelp has finally closed the old review page about this location since a lot of people were mistakenly reviewing an older or different facility. Yay! I've now been at this space for a few months and it's been fantastic. Online auto-billing has been flawless and I have yet to run into an employee that wasn't friendly and helpful. Here's my original review after I moved in: This is the 4th storage facility I've had an intimate relationship with over the years (the last being 5A at the bottom of Cedar, now called Extra Space Storage), and so far this is the freakin' Taj Mahal of storage spaces. I reserved my 10x20 space late last night online and received a very friendly call from their manager this morning before 9:30am and went down to check it out late afternoon. When I found the right office (there are at least 2, and I went to the wrong one first but was immediately directed across the street to the right one by a very friendly employee) I was immediately shown my reserved space by the manager, who was also very friendly and helpful. I was instantly shocked at how clean and well-lit the space was. But this was daylight, so I wasn't really impressed until later. We went back to the office to do my paperwork and there was a woman who lost her key being helped by yet another friendly (and patient) employee. After a few minutes I was booked, signed up for automatic payment, and on my way. Then I had a car-full of stuff to drop off tonight literally 10 minutes before the gates closed and I was in and out in 5 minutes. The lights were AMAZINGLY bright at night for this kind of place and I didn't feel unsafe at all. read more

Note to management: invest some $$ in fixing the unbelievably decrepit elevator, and put a passcode on the stairwell to allow folks to walk up and down. Poor customer service. read more

I have recently tried the "$1 - 1st Month's rent" program at this local Public Storage facility. It is a great way to try out one of the storage spaces at this or one of the other Public Storage locations. The location was easy to get in and out of, being near a freeway (and also near a Target store). The storage space was clean and had an interior light in the storage space. All of the personnel at this location, including Tamika, Ashley and all of the other ladies that assisted me with my storage needs, were helpful and friendly. I recommend this Public Storage location for all of your storage needs. read more

I just signed up for a storage space and wanted to warn people about the relentless, small-time grifting with which they welcome new customers. First, you are required to "buy" a lock for them (cylinder lock) for your space for $22. You don't get that money back if you leave and I'm assuming most people leave the lock for them to resell, since I doubt it's usable outside of this context. If you care, call ahead and ask what kind of lock you need. If it is available in hardware stores, I doubt you will pay $20. Second, you have to pay for insurance. That's true even if you give them evidence of insurance the next day (I did) and before you put anything in the space (I did). No refunds. So minimum $11 welcoming chisel. You can avoid this by bringing in evidence of insurance (it was easy to get from my renter's insurance carrier). Finally, there's an undisclosed "admin (move-in)" fee of $24. You can't avoid this one. So, all told, they grifted me for $55. It's not a huge amount of money for me. But Public Storage is dishonestly taking $55 from every person who believes their on-line come-on (by the way, I have no doubt all of this is theoretically disclosed somewhere in the process of clicking "agree" but it's been deliberately designed to avoid notice, so I'm going to stick with my description) and that is a lot of dirty money for them. They should be ashamed of themselves but I am certain they are not, so I think it's worthwhile publicly shaming them here. read more

I am a COMPLETELY dissatisfied customer and taking my business elsewhere and telling others to do the same. Due to the fact that I made a reservation (on the 800 number) for a storage unit at your 2nd Street Berkeley, CA location at the $1.00 move in and $65.00 per month and was told another rate upon arrival. From the start the staff was unprofessional and rude. They didn't try to resolve the obvious problem and told me that if I wanted the unit I would just have to pay the higher amount. This even after the 800 number representative called them and told them that the rate was confirmed earlier in the day. Also after the District Manager, Jay Deva, was contacted his response was for me to rent it at the higher rate and he "would see" if he could lower the rate if I rented it at the higher rate. The counter person Angelica told me at one point it was time for her to leave for the day so I needed to hurry so she could leave on time. The property manager Monica happened to walk in at about 5 minutes to closing and I tried to have her help solve the problem and she replied "this is my day off" and left after interrupting me and Angelica. This is not acceptable to advertise and confirm rates that are much lower than what a potential customer will be charged. By the way I personally called Jay Deva twice and left messages hoping that he would be able to help me and he NEVER called back nor did the property manager Monica call me back. POOR POOR POOR customer service all the way around. read more

So I guess this place is fine if you consider a month to be LESS than 30 days. I decided to take advantage of the deal they had where the first month's rental fee is $1. I only planned on needing storage for a month anyway, so I figured this would work out fine. With the added cost of all of the extra fees, insurance, lock, and keys, the total came to be about $48, which was still a great price. I had to fill out paperwork for about an hour and a half in order to finally get my space, but the employee was very friendly and patient. So I rented the space on May 13th and planned on giving a friend the key and having her take it out after 30 days. The employee told me I had to vacate the space by the June 11th. When I asked her why not the 13th, she gave me some weird answer about their policy and basically if I took my stuff out exactly on the 13th, I would be given an additional 3 dollar fee. I thought that was a little weird since the deal was 1 month = $1, but I still really couldn't complain about the price so I agreed. My friend took all of my things out of storage by June 6th. She called me a few days later to say that she never took the lock off the door, but that was my fault because I never told her she had to (basically if you leave the cylinder lock on the storage door, you still have to pay for space because you pay for the lock and key, and no one else has access to it except you). So I told her to go get the lock off before the 11th so they could cancel my membership. On June 9th, I received an email from a Public Storage employee saying that if the lock was not off the door by the 10th, I would be charged for another month because they could not pro-rate my membership after the 10th. I did not get this email until the 10th and my friend was unable to get to the storage space by the time I reached her. I begged her to wake up early the next Saturday morning so she could get the lock off on the 11th before the office opened up again. She got the lock off on that day, but guess what? THEY CHARGED ME FOR ANOTHER MONTH (and it wasn't cheap). They refused to listen to me after I told them that I was unaware that in their parallel universe, a month constitutes 27 days. I would like to make all users of Public Storage , Berkeley 2nd Street to be aware that the security at this site is lacks. Last night I happen to spot check my storage which I hadn't been to in over a month, and someone was sawed into my storage lock panel. If I hadn't come when I did their next session they would have gotten into my storage locker. I am less than please by the response of the staff and the corporate office which I called. To be fair they did say they are changing their policy about after-hours entry and leaving as of December 1st. That is 4 days away I would go check your security until then. read more

I rented a space on Friday. When I came by on Sunday with a load of stuff to store there was still a Public Storage padlock on my unit so I was unable to get into it and had to take the stuff someplace else. That was the only load I needed the storage space for so when I went to get my lock I found out that they were going to charge me two months rent for a unit that I only had a lock on for 3 weeks and was never able to actually use. When I asked about this I was given a phone number that was never answered. Today I was given a different phone number with the same results. I believe I have been robbed. Please don't give this company any of your hard earned money. read more

When I moved in a couple of years ago, I thought I was getting a decent rate for a clean and well secured facility (even an onsite residential manager.) But I was terribly wrong! After a horrific burglary in August, and multiple high rate increases since 2010, and attitude from one too many staff members, I recently moved out and will never use nor recommend their facilities to anyone. Everything looks nice and sparkly clean outside and inside too! I rented 2 units in the climate controlled building because family members had requested certain facility "standards" for storing estate items. They wanted video survellence, air conditioning, residential manager, gated facility, etc. and Public Storage met their criteria. But looks were so terribly deceiving. The move-in was smoothly. After six or eight months, I received a large rate increase. Another followed not long after. Family members began to complain about the increases, but we needed to stay for the time being, so I offered to move my personal belongings from StorageMart (where I was a long term happy customer) to Public Storage to help defray the raising costs, but nothing could stop the not-so-slow deteriation of my Public Storage experience. The rent was increased more frequently than once a year, and staff turnover was high. Some staff were very uninformed, and others had way too much attitude. Certain small repairs that I noticed needed attention had never been handled, even though I asked and was told over and over that it would be done in a few days (the definition of insanity!) This year a new manager, Art, joined this facility. He seemed kind, soft spoken, considerate and always had good intentions, but often couldn't follow through because he always needed approval from "the top" and they never responded very quickly. Art had purchased with his own money, numerous times, hand soap for the bathrooms. Another employee said she kept her own toilet paper in her rented unit just because the bathrooms did run out. And "the top" couldn't get around to providing enough petty cash for these minimal needs. That should be a huge red flag! This August, appx. 5 units were burglarized, mine included. Art had been out late the night before and apparently the thieves were knew he was gone and spent at least 6-8 hours in the building going from unit to unit. They had a lot of time and knew exactly what to do. Apparently, a total of 13 burglaries occured since January, I was told. The police came to take our individual reports and did a walk-through; looked at the emergency door that was used to enter and noted that it had been tampered with many times. Obviously Public Storage didn't strenghen these exits doors from previous burglaries (oh btw, no emergency exit doors have video cameras. Just FYI, the cameras are only located just outside the buildings in the parking lot area and inside each building's lobby. No cameras cover anywhere inside the buildings once you pass through the lobby.) The burglars easily cut through an outside fence along the frontage road. They broke through the same door used many times before, then easily cut through the fence wire used on each unit's open ceilings in the climate controlled building. They broke into pairs of units by cutting through the ceiling wire and climbing into the adjacent unit. To exit each unit, they simply unscrewed the hardware from inside and walked right out. They also pulled the doors back down so things looked normal. They had so much time in my unit alone that they put all the lids back on the hundred or so jewelry boxes they left behind and even replaced their rubber bands, AND put them back all back in a larger container. Unfortunately, no good fingerprints. I also found out that storage facilities in Berkeley aren't required to file their own police report if there are fewer than 8 units burglarized in one incident. So it's up to the customers to provide reports so there's accurate information on file with BPD. All in all, it took until sometime in late October to make the primary repairs. Art had the frontage road fence repaired quickly and he put those plastic tie-downs on to close up the holes in our unit "ceilings", but he left a large area open in mine and never fixed it even though I asked a bunch of times. And since "the top" was so slow to respond, the emergency door was not repaired until October which pretty much gave a welcome to anyone else who wanted to break in. There's more, but its all so ridiculous and I've written so much, if you want more info, write me. I paid way too much store belongings in a facility that looks so pretty, and comes with some "faux" security, and I learned my lesson. Now I'm relieved and happy to be back at StorageMart where it may look shabby on the outside, but its great on the inside through and through (see my review at their page.) In August of this year, I experienced at this facility the worst customer service I've ever encountered anywhere or at anytime. I had called ahead of time to reserve a storage space and to inquire whether a dolly would be available for my use. I was told that a cart would be available for hauling my boxes from the rental van to the storage space. However, when I arrived with my (first) loaded van on a Sunday morning, just a couple of hours before I had to report to work, I was greeted by the young woman in charge, Tamika, and promptly informed that I could only use the cart during regular "office hours"...because others had been stolen from the premises. I was left in a bind, because I did not have sufficient time to unload the van, and then return to my home to fetch the rest of my belongings for another drop-off, all while the office was open. I explained my situation to Tamika, but to no avail. She would not budge, nor did she display any hint of empathy. I cancelled the reservation and left the facility angry. I was unsuccessful when I later attempted to reach the district manager for that facility. I left a message for him, more than once, on his voice machine, but, some 3 months later, I'm still awaiting his return call. Abysmal customer service. read more

Renting with PS has been a wonderful experience. Tamika and Megan's professionalism squashed a stressful encounter into a gratefulness finding this storage. I've gone to several storage properties prior to coming to PS on Second Street. These young ladies showed concern and kindness. They took time to make sure the proper unit would meet my storage needs. They took me to several units until I was satisfied. The property is clean - especially the ladies restroom. The handcarts were always available when I needed it. Whenever I needed anything, Tamika goes out of her way to accommodate. I definitely would recommend this facility to friends and everyone who reads this review. read more

It was extremely easy setting up an account, and they have been very cooperative and understanding while I have been working the kinks out in order to get deliveries to my unit. Everyone at the front desk is extremely friendly and all of the units are very clean. This place is great I went with my buddies to rent a storage for summer break (were from university of Berkeley) and we came after a couple of months later to pick up our stuff since school starts in a couple of days really great customer service the manager I believe, Arthur was really great overall providing my friends of the stuff that's been happening there at that facility since we first stored there overall the manager was really nice and charismatic especially compared to all the people I've encountered at other places that have customer service. Secure, clean, cheap & very capable staff! Customer service here is the best -- Tamika and Shasta are helpful, smart, super friendly and on my visits, I've seen them making the outdoor rounds cleaning the facility and working hard clearing anything ex-storers have left behind. The place is spotless.. Nothing gets by them. Security is excellent at the perimeter and inside the storage areas. While the facility gets high marks, it's the staff here than make me feel confident recommending this location to any of my theft-paranoid, clean-freak friends (there's a clean on-site rest room too). read more
