Rampant Theft My interior, second floor storage space was burglarized and the thief put on another lock, which I had to pay a locksmith to remove. The locksmith showed me the damage to the door from the thief cutting my lock with a saw (photo attached). The staff basically shrugged, said this scenario has happened at other Public Storage locations, and wouldn't even refund my last month's rent. As I was moving out my remaining items (the thief spent considerable time going through my contents), I warned a man going into the facility that there was no security and he said that his space had been burglarized as well. He said that all of his tattoo equipment was stolen and that the staff doesn't care. The Berkeley Police Department officer said that thefts were happening all the time. If you're two days late, they'll send you a notice declaring that they will auction your shit if you don't pay quick. This happened to me when my credit information was entered INCORRECTLY. They ended up breaking my lock and evaluating my stuff, just three days after a missed bill. I immediately called corporate and they told me that they apologize for the irrational behaviors and actions of the Berkeley PS, but because they're a franchise, corporate can't do anything about it. I've been storing my stuff here for over a year. It's always easy to get in and out, and I've never had trouble getting a flatbed cart when I need one. Also, the ladies who work at the desk are the best. I recently downsized into a smaller unit and Tamika helped me pick a new unit and close my account on the previous one with no trouble at all. This place gave me the heebee jeebees. The janky elevator made a very loud creaking sound when you took it up to the second floor and has a door that needs to be forced open by hand when you take it down to the ground floor. The hallways are bare and dark. They floors and walls look like nothing more than plywood that has been painted over. You would film the next Saw movie at this place. If you have to put your stuff somewhere though then this is the type of place to go. Don't visit at night or by yourself though. read more

Had no problems with this place until today...when we found out our space had been robbed. Looks like we're one of a dozen or more spaces on the same floor that got broken into. I understand that these things happen, and it sucks. But what I don't understand is the utter disregard the staff showed us when they told us the news, or led us through the procedure. They have no interest in getting the police involved, and they didn't tell us that if we wanted to file a police report, we should do it on the premises. They told us to go through the space, verify if anything was stolen, then come down to the front desk. Y'know, like they had some forms for us to fill out or something. Nope. When we finally returned to the desk and told them we'd been robbed, they just handed us a brochure for their insurance company (which we have) and told us to call them. That's it. It wasn't until we got all the way back home and called the police that THEY told us that we should've called from the scene of the crime. Of course, this is after we put out storage space back in order. When we called back to let the employees know the proper procedure (so they can hopefully spare the other dozen robbed customers the same grief), they told us they "were just following orders" from their district manager. So, official word from PS Public Storage is NOT to get the police involved when over a dozen units are forcibly broken into, or to help their customers go through the process correctly? We felt even worse when they told us that they don't have any security cameras on any of the floors, just the lobby and the parking lot. When we first signed up, I actually felt better seeing the security monitors. I should've looked closer. Yeah. We're looking for a new storage company right now. One who actually gives a damn when your stuff gets stolen. read more

Storage is storage... I thought. I just got a space there to pack stuff away for a year of school. I chose Public Storage because I've used their facilities before (in AZ), they are so giant it is unlikely they'll go out of business while I am out of the country, and they allow you to manage your account and pay online which will be useful overseas. So I rented a space online, which was fairly easy. You can choose a space and do all of the paperwork ahead of time so all you have to do is check in when you get there. THEORETICALLY. But it wasn't. The fact that I did everything online caused serious confusion between the THREE people who were intermittently trying to help me, getting confused and passing the buck. I was trying to get my space for an hour. The woman working at the counter was as dim as the storage space the finally gave me. Finally I got passed on to the brightest of the three stooges who at least figured out how to use the phone to call his manager. I had to fill out almost all of the paperwork all over again, pay $20 more for a slightly larger space and buy an additional $8/m of insurance. They ran my credit card a second time (the first being what I already did online) and mentioned that I "might be charged twice, but we can refund it." and then the guy who showed me the space took me to the wrong one, before placing me in one that is down a hellishly long corridor that smells like cat pee. Though there are no cats. Rats maybe? Maybe they should get some cats then. There was a couple who came in just after me who reserved by phone and the operator assured them that if they went to this one - on 2nd in Berkeley instead of the one much closer to their house in El Cerrito - they could rent a "drive up" space so they didn't have to move delicate cargo on elevators etc. When they got there they were told that no drive up spaces were available and "drive up" actually just means you can park in the lot while you shlep your stuff upstairs(?). Then they proceeded to have a nearly tearful/rageful exchange with the manager over the phone. They have carts you can use to bring your stuff in, but they are locked to the wall and you have to leave your drivers license to get one. And if you are there while no one is in the office, like I was at 5:15 tonight, you are SOL and have to carry all of your junk up the elevator and down two hallways to the other side of the building and convince yourself that it is the same as going to the gym. The front gate only lets you in with a code, which I understand and appreciate, but the back gate only let's you OUT with a code too, which doesn't make much sense. Why would you need special access to LEAVE the facility? Unless, as someone else mentioned, it is where they film the saw movies. read more

We used them to store our extra furniture and boxes for about 2 years, and we finally moved everything out recently. We found our whole storage space covered in dead maggots and god knows what else. And one of our movers grabbed a box and discovered a dead rat stuck in our box handle. That explained all the maggots. My question is, how the heck did the rat get in there?! I pay them a lot of money every month and I expect my belongings to be pest-free. That made one of my movers vomit, cuz of how nasty it smelled and that he touched the dead rat by accident. I went to the leasing office to check out and mentioned the problem, they said "oh really? ok, well, here's your check out receipt. bye" No apologies, no attempt to credit me with anything. The customer service was great. But the business itself has problems. Like many others below, I think there are some bad business practices going on here. My rent jumped considerably and they were aggressive when selling the AIG insurance - I had no option. After doing my research I learned that my stuff that was already covered by my homeowners policy. Also homeless people have access to the door codes, they access the area at night and I don't feel safe there after work. The carts are only accessible when the staff is working, so when you are there alone at night, you have no access to a moving cart - the time you need it the most. read more

Last year I was helping someone move a 2 bedroom apartments worth of furniture into a unit at this facility. If you have ever been to this location you know that they have a gate that's about 30-40ft from the building, plus a parking area directly in front of the elevator accessible building, making it very difficult to pull a large truck onto their lot (especially if cars are parked in the spaces outside the elevator doors). The lot is so small that once you pull a truck in nose first, you have to back out in reverse and maneuver the truck out of the gate tail first. Long story short - there are 4-5 car space directly in front of the automatic doors where the elevator is located: (NOW keep in mind this is where all of the customers park their cars and trucks for loading/unloading purposes). Once we finished our work, I attempted to back out of the facility lot, I had to get really close to the parking spaces with my truck in order to angle the truck just right to make the turn out of such a tight space. Once I attempted to back out of the lot I noticed in my rear view side mirrors an angry and belligerent Public Storage employee/manager yelling at me, making crazy hand motions, jumping up-and-down, acting like a circus clown (being very rude). So I climb down from my truck and walk up to her. Angry rude lady: "You need to pull forward and turn this truck around up ahead! If you hit my car we are going to have problems!" Me: "Does it look like I can turn this gigantic truck around in here!?" Angry rude lady: "That's not my problem!" Me: " Why don't you park your car outside of the gate where the employees SHOULD be parking! Not in the spaces that are designed for customer access in/out of the elevator! You guys clearly have limited space on this end of the facility!" Angry rude lady: "Are you really yelling at me? (she was the one yelling) I want your boss's name and number!" My truck wasn't too big for the lot. It just makes things a lot more cumbersome when the people who work there decide to park inside of the gate where there is limited space. There are a lot of spaces available on the street, at least 10-15 spaces every time I am at this location. Wouldn't you think that she would just kindly ask me to stop my truck, then move her vehicle out of the customers way? I think you guys should hire employees that are a little less incompetent and not so lazy. There is a difference of 10 feet to the office door if employees park on the street. read more

I dealt with her exclusively during my "orientation" and checkout process - everything was explained clearly, honestly, and not in a rushed manor. She's knowledgeable and has a great attitude. Customer service here stinks, to be kind about it. They only have 4 carts available, and more than half the time I come there, all carts are out. Management says that is their allotment of carts and has no interest in the fact that it is not enough for the number of people here. When renting, they try to force you buy useless insurance, as a sly way to raise the quoted price. At first they refused to even rent me a unit unless I paid their exorbitant fees, and you know d*** well they would never pay out even if you had a loss, unless you could prove everything in the unit. Only when I started to walk out, and stated that I would be filing a BBB complaint did they relent and let me have the unit at the advertised price. I am only using this as a staging unit for a few months, or I would have already moved out and found a better place to do business with. read more

Like most rational humans, I enjoy good costumer service . I was pleasantly surprised by the incredible customer service my wife and I received at this Public Storage. Tamika and her team (Loretta, Danielle, and the others whose names I've forgotten - sorry!) are some of the friendliest people I've met at any business, period. This was especially nice because we just moved to Oakland without any friends or relatives in the area, so the good people at PS being so genuinely friendly meant a lot to us - it helped make us feel welcome to the whole Bay Area after a stressful move. The site here feels super secure and I don't feel like anyone's going to jack our stuff. Further, I had a big moving truck which I was able to maneuver without any problemz. So all-in-all this Public Storage site is in the cut, low key, easy to get around in, and staffed by dope people. If you need to drop off your junk somewhere, do it here! read more

Wish I could give zero stars...To be fair, the staff who actually work at the place on a daily basis are nice and helpful. The management, however, is an absolute joke. After 1 year of un-returned phone calls about a billing dispute I filed a Better Business Bureau complaint...to no avail. I guess when you already have several outstanding BBB complaints, what's one more? When I opened the locker, I was promised, in writing, a certain monthly fee. They never honored this and never paid me back what I was owed...They raised the rent price after a year with no notification.... The "manager" would say he would call me back since his computer was rebooting, or make up some other excuse and never return phone calls. Otherwise, the place is clean and kept up well, if you don't mind homeless people wandering around... There aren't many places to store your stuff, but if you can find anything other than this place, do it. read more

I was thrilled to find this place, but wish I had researched better before I moved in. The front office staff has been kind and helpful, but the problem comes on the back end. The company raised my rent by over 15% within a few months after I moved in. (This after I had researched carefully and selected their facility, in large part to reduce what I was paying elsewhere. Now it turns out I spent a bundle moving the stuff into a space that is just as expensive as where I was before. Duh.) The message I got from the staff says something about "corporate policy" to raise rent because their expenses have increased. I think this is bait & switch, and am filing a complaint with State of California Attorney General. (Why waste time with the BBB? I'm not sure what they do, but the AG's office will investigate, at least if they get numerous complaints.) I will move my stuff out just as soon as I can find a decent place that does not engage in this kind of deceptive practice. I would be interested to hear other people's experiences with rental raises. A colleague told me that PS "raises the rent every year". Is this true? read more

While the facility now boasts one cleanish, concrete-floored, air-conditioned structure, it now lacks even partially-self-aware staff. These kids are the snottiest, most power-hungry, and most ill-suited to customer-facing roles I've ever wasted my business on. None can seem to manage the task of updating contact information, by phone or in person, as has been repeatedly demanded in the wake of their selling my storage unit for failure to [process automatic credit card payments, in house]. I get tons of junk mail from them, at my mailing address, but nary an invoice nor auction-pending alert. My email box is full of invoices, months and months worth, but no notification that they'd forgotten how to take credit cards. They don't even acknowledge the six trips I made through the gate, using my code to enter and exit, after the date the account is supposed to have gone into arrears. Public Storage was just part of my strategy for evading some ooky spooky bullshit: everything I treasured went in, so I could stay quick on my feet and not worry about those Barbary Coast era ltd run Maxfield Parrish prints or that wine that was banned before the labels had dried. I stashed fine linens, still sealed in original packaging, ancient rimed costume jewelry, fine leather goods and armoured gear which my present circumstances just don't allow but which are an Important Part of This Complete Jessica. Public Storage denies any written policy on anything, in particular as regards tenant rights and modes of contact. No, they don't post notices on rental doors. They don't try anything. They just sell your stuff, when they feel like it. Someone must share my taste in bed linens. I wonder if they also have a bloodthirsty attorney. read more

I've have had my storage space for over 5 years due to full time hectic job plus caring for elderly and haven't sorted through my things which I must do now that I'm retired. Tamika called me to alert me about my space not being properly secured. So glad she demonstrated proper security and even assisted me with an oversized box which I didn't have my hand truck with me. When I first moved my boxes to this storage facility, I was thrilled, and gave the facility 5 stars, but over time, the place became so uncustomer friendly, I could hardly wait to move out. So I've updated my review to reflect the reality of this Public Storage. Though clean with a full restroom available to renters, I did learn that cameras are only on entrances. This doesn't help if someone has propped open a door and your unit is housed in one of the many halls. There is no way to see who is taking your stuff...and the individual units are not alarmed. Your neighbor could easily break a lock, take your possessions and move them right out along with theirs. To top it off, in exchange for your driver's license, you can use a dolly....but can only during normal business hours. If you work, forget it. There were also plenty of times when their computer system was down....which means you can't get to your stuff if it isn't on the ground floor. Too much for me. Good-bye Public Storage! read more

HORRIBLE Customer service. I just got off of the phone with an employee here who was very rude and spoke to me with a definite attitude. This morning I called public storage, the main company, and was connected to a salesperson who was very helpful and connected me with this specific storage space in Berkeley. She told me about prices and sizes and all of that jazz, but I told her I wanted to shop around for other prices before I commit. She nicely told me that she could put a free hold for a week on the unit while I did my research and decided on whether or not I wanted it. So a few hours after that, just now, some woman called me from the store. As soon as I picked up her tone and attitude threw me off so I had to ask twice who was calling just to verify what was going on. She seemed angry and upset with me when I was confused about my appointment that the other lady had apparently scheduled for me. I told her I did not know of any appointment and explained to her what I discussed with the other woman. She was annoyed and told me, "She's in L.A. Not here." She then tried to get me to give my information and at that point I was no longer interested. This morning I was looking into renting here, but after that phone call I will take my business elsewhere. I was simply confused about the appointment and wanted clarification. Wow. I still cannot believe the way they speak to their potential customers, and that tone. Geez. Horrible. read more

So far I've had no problem with my unit, and the people working there have been nice. But I find Public Storage's sales system to be extremely annoying. I called them to just ask about units, as I was getting a feel for the prices at the different companies in Berkeley. Public Storage proceeded to call me and leave a message on my voicemail every. single. day. until I called them back. Finally when I did call them back, they said they wanted to confirm my reservation for a unit. I never made a reservation! But they convinced me to make one and I reserved a unit. THEN they proceeded to call me and AGAIN leave a message on my voicemail every single day until I called them back. This time, it was to confirm an appointment to come in and look at the unit, which I had never made. It worked- I came in and looked at a unit and ended up renting from them. But I found it extremely annoying that they lied about appointments and reservations as an excuse to keep contacting me. Also, keep in mind that the price they quote you does not include the mandatory price of a lock, which is $20, or the price of insurance on your goods, which is also mandatory to have. read more

I am generally not a fan of storage units. It seems like a waste of money, and it is. However, if you find yourself in a situation where you have to store things for three months or less as I did in a transitional move, this Public Storage was the best! As others have have mentioned the staff are wonderful, it is clean, and I always felt safe and comfortable there. I agree that Tamika is wonderful. That is who help me get started. I'm happy my stuff is all at home now with me, but I did thoroughly enjoy my experience! Less is more! Don't keep belongings in storage long term if it can be avoided. You could by all new stuff within a year with what you pay for storing things. Well, maybe not. Maybe you have things that can't be replaced. Anyway! Friendly place. read more
