This is one of my favorite spots in the La Mesa area. The staff is always warm and welcoming, and the entire café has such a cozy, inviting vibe. It's also very kid-friendly and a great place to read or study, with dedicated stools and seating designed for that purpose. I really appreciate their no-WiFi table concept, which encourages community, conversation, and being present rather than glued to a screen. One thing to keep in mind is parking, it's mostly paid street parking and can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. That said, it's still worth the effort. Their scones always look incredible, though this time I kept it simple with a latte, and it was absolutely delicious. I love the cute little "thank you" card they give out!
It is hard not to give this place another five star review. I usually do not review a shop more than once, but during my second visit to Public Square I was transported right back to happy little coffee shop heaven. It almost felt like experiencing it for the first time again. I will not go into too much detail since my first review already covers a lot... This time we arrived about an hour before closing. They offer an afternoon happy hour from 1pm to close (4pm). Scones are $2, some lunch items like the tomato soup and carnitas sandwich are $2 off, and certain lattes are only $4. Last time I ordered a matcha latte with pandan syrup which was great, but this visit I wanted to try their signature pandan latte. My partner ordered the dark chocolate mocha latte. We also grabbed two scones with fig and honey butter and maple cayenne butter. You can check my first review for more details about the butter. The space was extremely clean and cozy. The interior has lots of greenery and warm lighting. I like that they rely on natural light mixed with softer yellow lighting. It makes the space comfortable whether you are studying, getting work done, or just winding down after a long day like we were. The barista at the register was incredibly kind. She was handling both drink making and the register while a steady line of customers kept forming. I was not able to catch her name but she maintained a great attitude the whole time. The person clearing tables and running food was also very friendly. We were given a number for our scones and they arrived in less than five minutes. They smelled amazing and tasted even better. Warm and fluffy with a slightly crisp exterior. Our drinks came out about ten minutes after ordering. The dark chocolate mocha latte was crafted really well. You could taste that slight bitterness from the dark chocolate but it blended nicely with the espresso. My pandan latte was refreshing in a caffeinated, comforting kind of way. I was curious whether it was more of a pandan milk drink or if there was espresso in it. I could definitely taste espresso but the drink still kept its bright green color which made me wonder if it might be a lighter roast. The pandan flavor adds this nutty, almost macadamia-like flavor that makes the drink creamy and really enjoyable. Overall this place continues to impress me. Great service, consistently delicious drinks and food, and a cozy atmosphere. I cannot wait to come back and try the carnitas sandwich next.
Portions here are huge, so definitely come hungry. I had the chia pudding, and my sisters and husband enjoyed their meals. I did find the Not-So-Old-Fashioned Biscuits and Gravy to have an overpowering rosemary flavor. If you like rosemary, you might enjoy them. The breakfast sandwich was tasty, and I loved the Black Sesame Latte. They provide non-dairy milk, which I appreciate. Service was great, and the restaurant setting was warm and inviting.

Hands down the best coffee in town. Consistently excellent, thoughtfully made, and never misses. The food is just as good--fresh, well-executed, and clearly made with care. Great vibe, friendly staff, and the kind of place that reminds you why supporting small businesses matters. Support local--especially when it's this good..
4.5/5! Lively, homey coffee shop in the center of La Mesa. Coffee: 5/5 The sesame latte was wonderfully umami. 1/2 sweet was the perfect sweetness for me so I'd imagine 100% sweet would err on the sweeter side. Both the hot and iced versions were smooth and delicious. The baristas are clearly talented. Food: 4.5/5 The breakfast sandwich was solid, the focaccia bread tasted fresh and was certainly the highlight of the dish. Service: 4/5 Service was decent! I got the impression that the service lady taking orders was a bit overwhelmed. Ambiance: - Very lively - definitely on the louder end of coffee shops. The interior is nicely decorated and they have various merch/bottled drinks for sale. Parking: - Metered La Mesa downtown parking. Can be difficult on the weekends but you can dally snag a spot along the street.
I have been making my own coffee at home lately so I have not been discovering new coffee shops but wow I will be back at this one again soon. I have really loved exploring the La Mesa area and it really has some great spots so it has turned into one of our favorites areas to walk around and discover something new. I was not super hungry when I was here but I could not say no to a scone with a flight of butter. You got to pick which flavors you wanted on the flight and the scone was perfection. I got a classic vanilla latte with oat milk and would definitely order it again. The staff here are truly awesome, so friendly and helpful which really sells it on the fact that I want to come back here again soon!
First time visiting and it certainly will not be the last. I got the fresh scone with the honey and fig butter and my friend got the guava butter. They were but so good! I love that you can buy jars of the butter and they discount to refill the jars. I got a vanilla bean iced latte and she got the brow suga latte. Bother we're definitely delicious. The instead is so cute and I love the you matter mural. They are very inclusive of everyone. The baristas were very friendly and welcoming to call. Can't wait to go back and try other items
What a cute coffee shop! You can tell it's a spot people love to work or study. The menu includes great coffee and non-caffeinated drinks, but also a breakfast and lunch menu. This time I went, I was super tempted for the grilled cheese and tomato soup, but wasn't super hungry. I decided to order a scone with three different types of butter. I'm obsessed with the butters! The scone was delicious but the butters were the real stars. We got the maple cayenne, fig and honey, and cranberry orange. I liked them all, but the fig and honey was hands down my favorite. My iced brown sugar latte was perfection. Definitely a place I'll continue to come back to whenever I happen to be in the area!
I Stopped by Public Square Coffee on a Friday afternoon while checking out the farmers market. I ordered an agua fresca for my son and treated myself to a Buko Pandan both were delicious! It did take a bit of time for them to prepare, but honestly, totally worth the wait. You can tell this place has its community lots of regulars hanging out, folks working remotely and using the café as their unofficial office. While I was sipping my drink, one guy was trying to speak Tagalog to the barista (props for the effort!) and then launched into a full-on history and political convo only at a neighborhood coffee spot like this, lol. I'll be back for sure
I've been hitting up all the trendy spots lately with my son, and Public Square in La Mesa is definitely a winner. This place is super hip and attracts a young, lively crowd. We went on a Saturday morning and it was packed, it seems like everyone had the same idea to grab coffee and scones here! Here is what we ordered: * The Scone: This was amazing. It has that perfect texture, crusty on the outside but incredibly soft and moist on the inside. Pro tip: You have to try it with their honey butter. It is so good. * Avocado Toast: Another hit. It comes on crunchy toasted sourdough with fresh arugula on top. Simple and delicious. * Hot Chocolate: Heavenly! It was creamy and rich, exactly the way we like it. * Matcha: This was on another level. Very cool and rich in flavor. Even though it was busy, the service was super efficient. You just order at the counter first and they deliver the food right to your table. Highly recommend if you are looking for a great brunch spot in the area!
A lovely spot. Outdoor seating available and many tables with charging ports. Fantastic and beautiful food done quickly. Recommending the drench toast and the Changa latte. Well worth the trip.
We came to try the coffee drinks, but would come back again for the food. The upside: Very Friendly Service Excellent Food Cool atmosphere Great prices Lots of outdoor seating Nice downtown location in La Mesa The downside: The wait to get coffee was like none I've ever experienced. We were told up front that the wait for our iced lattes would be 20 minutes. We wanted to order food too, so we're fine with that. However, our food was long gone before we ever received our coffees. At 30 min. I went in to check on our order (food had arrived by then) because we were sitting outside and thought maybe we hadn't heard our name get called at 20-ish minutes. Was told politely and apologetically that our order was up next & it would just be a couple minutes...15 more minutes (45 total now) and our coffees were finally received. The coffee was very good but honestly no coffee is amazing enough to wait 45 min. for, especially considering late morning on a Thursday. The place was busy but not too packed to find seating and there were maybe only 5 people in line to order when we arrived. So, while I would not come back for coffee unless the place looked fairly empty, I would definitely come back for the food. The sugar scone that was highly recommended and the butter flight of all 6 flavored butters was as fun to try as it was delicious. My daughter had the signature breakfast sandwich and it was really good as well. We would definitely come back for either of these 2 food items any time...just might need to get the coffee elsewhere on the way. Giving 4 stars overall because of the wait on coffee, otherwise I'd give it a 4.5.

I love their scones, and butters! it's unique and since scones are made in house they're always fresh!! but the sandwich it's really what impacted me! the bread????? it's SO SOFT, and delicious I couldn't believe it! bacon it's thick bacon??? excuse me? amazing!!! the best breakfast sandwich I've had in my life, I'd buy just the bread by itself haha I'm used in the US not everything is fresh, a lot of things are frozen, even bread it's frozen and then they bake it; so it just reminded me in my childhood when I would get fresh bread hahaha such an amazing experience for me to eat this sandwich, thank you for making this in this great way God bless the hands who made it read more
Public Square Coffee was rated as a favorite among locals in La Mesa and I can definitely vouch for that. I've always walked past them every year during the La Mesa Oktoberfest and have wanted to try their coffees and their popular scone and butter flight. I came on Sunday for a little pick me up coffee and their scone flight. I immediately fell in love with their scone. It had a crunchy shell and broke apart softly. Dusted with some powdered sugar and warmed up from the oven made it so delish. In order, my favorite butters were the Maple Cayenne, Cranberry Orange, and Guava. I already love anything butter so these were a hit for me. Definitely would order another scone as it was not enough for the trio of butters. For drinks, The Pandan Latte I had stood out to me as I love this unique Asian flavor. If you never had Pandan, it is similar to coconut and vanilla. I could taste the espresso and pandan flavors in the entire drink. I'd love to come back to try some more goodies from the menu. They mix it up and offer pizza + beer on Fridays-Sunday after 5pm in collaboration with Pierre's Pizza Place. There's a lot they offer at Public Square and it was a great experience for some morning goodies! read more
Met up with a friend Friday morning to get some work done here and had a great experience! There is 2 hour metered parking on the street (.75cents per hour). There is indoor and outdoor seating but we chose to sit indoors to utilize the outlets for our laptops. Service was great , everyone is super friendly! I got the pandan latte and it was delicious but a little more on the sweeter side , which is expected. I did not get food today but they have yummy options. They have a bathroom for customers which is super clean and even had a wholesome message for parents! read more

Was expecting a lot with all the reviews, really nice ambiance. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. ordered a scone with the cinnamon butter and a cold brew. Was hoping for some cold foam but they don't have any so had them add little oat milk as like some cream with my cold brew. The scone with the butter was pretty good. I did not like the cold brew at all. Don't think I will be returning for coffee read more
I've been here a couple of times already. I don't think it matters which day of the week you go, it's always filled with people studying or catching up with friends. The signature bfast sandwich is always a good go to. I recently tried the grilled cheese sando with the tomato soup. The sando was good but small and didn't have enough cheese for the amount you're paying. I didn't think it was worth it, but the tomato bisque soup was really good and I liked the texture of it. My husband got the carnitas sandwich and it was good but not amazing. For the drinks, I've gotten the black sesame and the pandan latte on different occasions. Both good and nutty, but I prefer the black sesame. I enjoy coming here bc it has good drinks and food that's not too much. Good amount of seating and service is standard. read more

Stopped by Public Square in La Mesa for lunch on a semi-rainy day with a friend. It was super crowded, so we ended up sitting at the bar in the corner. The vibe leans more industrial and rustic rather than cozy. It's got character, but not the kind of warm, inviting feel you might want on a gloomy day. We both ordered the tomato soup and grilled cheese, a classic comfort combo. The grilled cheese was packed with flavor and on super thick bread. The tomato soup was rich and creamy but leaned a little on the sweeter side--good, but I personally prefer a more savory tomato soup. I originally wanted to try their pizza, but unfortunately, they don't start serving it until 5 PM, which was a bit of a letdown. To round out the meal, I got a chocolate chip cookie. It was solid--warm and enjoyable--but not particularly memorable. Overall, a great spot with good food and a lively atmosphere and study spot. I'll definitely be back to try the pizza! read more

Absolutely love this place but it definitely fills up. Order inside and grab a table either indoors or outside. They've also got mobile order for pick-up at the window which seems to be the way to go since the line does back up. Loved their Pandan latte over the Black Sesame. It had a delightfully light coconut and floral flavor. Their breakfast sandwich was also pretty good. We opted to add arugula and chili oil for a little freshness and spice. They're well-known for their scones. There's a 2 scone/6 butter deal that allows you to sample all their butters and their crisp but moist scones. Faves were peanut butter ube and maple cayenne butters. Super walkable area with lots of spots to eat and shop. Another fun brunch spot for the rolodex and in a really charming part of La Mesa. read more

Had a yummy gluten free breakfast yesterday! I had the gluten-free breakfast sandwich and it was delicious and had to kick because of the spicy chipotle aïoli. Also, I was feeling adventurous and tried the panadan latte. Panadan is an Ayurvedic plant from south east Asia with great health benefits. I had it with whole milk and it was very rich and creamy And sweet . I usually drink black coffee, but I had never heard of panadan and so I went for it . aside from the sweetness I really enjoyed it. It's great to see that public Square was hopping around 10 AM on a Thursday. I hope you try this drink and let me know what you think of it. read more

- spacious shop along a line of cute local shops, it's in a great area to walk around! - there's a plaza down the street for parking - came to grab a quick coffee but seems like a great place to study! plenty of seating and outlets too - there was a line on a sat morning but it moved quick and service was prompt and nice - the dark chocolate mocha was delicious! such a rich chocolatey flavor (they use 85% chocolate) but the espresso was still strong and flavorful read more

OFFERS DISCOUNT FUR CASH PAYMENTS New favorite coffee shop! A friend and I just started to homeschool our girls together and thought as a treat for ourselves, let's explore different coffee shops in the process. We stopped in yesterday: point number one, they had cute affirmation cards to give to our kids. Love a kid friendly environment! I usually order matcha everywhere I go but I was feeling adventurous and asked the cashier for her recommendation. She said to try the pandan latte. It's green like matcha and still sweet and smooth, just a little nutty. Then she suggested the brown sugar latte - said it was a top seller and was sweet with a familiar taste that agrees with almost everyone. I went with the pandan and was not at all disappointed. I plan to try other drinks here, but I've got to order the pandan a few more times! I also ordered the scone & butter flight...DELICIOUS! I could eat the butter alone they were so good! We talked about going back yesterday for happy hour lol. I've already made a coffee date with another mom to share this place with her. read more
DRINK: latte milk options are only normal or oat, the drink was pretty good but not anything special and not very sweet. I think I'm bias with the sweet aspect because I like mine overly sweet FOOD: The food here is amazing, especially the breakfast sandwiches I definitely recommend trying! Ambiance and service were 5 stars right away. Our cashier/server gal was super bubbly and helpful. Like she had more energy than me on my most energetic day, haha. My brown sugar latte was so delicious and great price, not sure if it was a 2pm happy hour or something? I'm happy though! Finally, the food was delicious! The avocado hummus toast (no egg) was perfect. Delicious bread! We will probably come back when we're back in town. Oh good kefir soda too! read more

My first time at public square coffee house was around noon on a Wednesday and it was busy! Parking was a bit difficult since everyone's shopping and enjoying the holiday season. The cafe itself is big and makes a great place to hang out and possibly study if you don't mind loud music. The customer service was great and the baristas make delicious drinks. Kate was very sweet and didn't mind giving me personalized recommendations for drinks and pastry pairings. I ordered an iced pandan latte with oat milk and an iced chaga latte with oat milk. Both drinks were yummy and not too sweet. The espresso flavor in both lattes were masked by the syrups but were still very good. I would definitely come back. read more

I've been wanting to come to this location for a while now but parking definitely can be tricky. Most of is street parking or in the back there is a small area for parking. On a Friday at 11-12 o clock it was packed and had to park kind of far and walk to the shop. The brown sugar latte was perfectly and really enjoyed it. The espresso carnitas was also super delicious and I would definitely get it again. The space is great for homework, lots of plugs and variety of seating at tables or chairs or couches. They also have a table set aside that isn't allowed for laptop usage, and is mainly there for conversation and talking or eating which I think it's really really great. They also have an outdoor space as well that is shaded.for all my parents, they have a kids menu and some kid friendly options like apple juice or apple sauce pouches. Overall! Really great job! We ordered-- -Americano ($3.95) & Green Tea ($4.25): classics but everso satisfying -Scone & Butter Flight ($10.75): soft, dense crumbly cake-like pastry enclosed by crispy biscuit-like shell. comes with 6 uniquely flavored butters (cinnamon, maple cayenne, peanut butter ube, pandan-colada, cranberry orange, and guava). this is a great sharing appetizer! thought the butters had subdued flavors & texture not as thick/ creamy. -Avocado & Hummus Toast ($12.95): tasted fresh w/ addition of creamy hummus & fried egg resting on thick sourdough bread -Coffee Carnitas Sandwich ($12.95): carnitas was a bit dry and couldn't taste much of the espresso rub, but was enjoyable combined with the chipotle aioli & pickled onions nestled between fluffy, chewy focaccia bread! I've been here a few times previously to do work and would sometimes have a hard time finding an indoor table due to its popularity. Always bustling, positive vibes (they give small cards with inspiring msgs!) & welcoming community! Overall a solid local brunch & coffee spot, would return! I ordered the Brown Suga' Latte and my husband got a dirty chai. We decided to do them iced, a delicious choice. The ambiance is so fun! They're playing soft music, there's tables, chairs and sofas to get comfy in. There's a corner designated for board games and there's a wall for coffee and tea related retail items. The menu says they're known for their scones and flavored house butters. I may have to get back in line to try one! The line comes and goes quickly, but they definitely have a strong Sunday morning crowd! read more
The vibe is so chill, I love all the live plants plus they have them for sale! I had an iced pandan latte and it was absolutely delicious. Perfect amount of sweet and nutty. 10 out of 10 recommend. When I got my coffee, there was a nice little card with it that truly brightend my day. read more
Our experience at Public Square Coffeehouse was awesome! The coffee was really good. I ordered an iced vanilla latte, and it was rich and flavorful, not too sweet or bitter, just perfect. We also tried a scone with an off-menu fruit compote, which was also tasty. The avocado toast was fantastic with fresh avocados, arugula, radishes, and feta on sourdough.It was a bit messy to eat so get extra napkins. The breakfast sandwich on a ciabatta roll was good and was a little spicy, I guess from the smoky aioli. It too was also really good. The vibe is cozy and relaxed, and the line moves quickly. They even sell plants! Definitely worth checking out if you're in downtown La Mesa. read more

Such a great go to coffee and food vibe if you want a quick bit to eat ! This place definitely gets busy and most times there is a line but it goes pretty fast. Today was the first time I tried the scones and OH MY GOD soo good!! I always think of a scone as being stiff and hard but this is perfectly cooked. We got the scone with the 6 butter flight. I think some of the butters are better than others but always good to try all of them! There coffee is next level as they have great signature drinks and then also just regular coffee. We knew it had to be good due to the long line and almost every table was full. We scanned the menu and I decided on getting the dark chocolate mocha latte and damn was it good. Good amount of coffee and chocolate but not overly sweet so loved it. (I got mine iced) The cappuccino was good but I'm not a big cappuccino lover so it didn't do it for me but my boyfriend liked it. I got the scone with the peanut butter ube butter and OMG was it delicious. The scone was buttery and flaky and I loved the sugar crustedness of it but it wasn't crazy sweet. The peanut butter ube butter was smooth and creamy and delicious. You can buy the butter separately and bring it home. (I'll do this next time) The shakshuka was also very good. Good flavor and the side bread is perfectly crunchy. The service was excellent. Ambience is busy and lively and I love it. I can see this place being a regular go to for coffee and scones. read more

Their pandan latte is one of my ALL TIME favorite coffee drinks, ALL TIME!! The pandan flavor just mixes super duper well with the coffee flavor, I honestly don't know how they do it. My boyfriend and I are obsessed and this is one of our go to spots whenever we want coffee. We've tried making pandan latte at home but it's just not the same. In fact it's so good I brought my parents here and they were blown away by how good and rich the pandan latte was! I've tried their vanilla latte, a mushroom latte (I forget the name), and one other latte I forget the name but the pandan is still our favorite. read more

So upset at myself for not coming back sooner but second experience just as great as the first! A friend and I met up on a Sunday morning for some breakfast. It was pretty busy and both the outdoor seating and the indoor seating appear unassuming but there were plenty of seats to go around with people coming in and out! I just love the vibe in there, it's very much a community spot and baristas are all very welcoming. For drinks this time I got the Iced Brown Suga Latte and my friend got an Iced Dark Chocolate Mocha, both were really good. For food we split the Scones with the Housemade Butter Flight.... SO good I see why they sell the butters in jars they're so dangerous lol, I got the Signature Breakfast Sandwich and added Chili Oil with Arugula, it was so yummy and extremely filling. Hot damn! The scone and the tasty little butters. Im not really a sweets or a scone person but it sounded fun. The scone itself is nice but the butters....the flavors. Cinnamon was my fav! Second best peanut butter ube, and the blueberry was ok but didn't stand a chance next to the others. I also got the pandan latte since it seemed to be all the rage and it was good. Also got the biscuits and gravy, didn't take a pic because I got it to go. The gravy was flavorful and surprisingly the egg on top was really good...not sure why this egg in particular but it was so. Biscuit also pretty good but probably wouldn't eat it in its own. Definitely a line but didn't take too long! Food is quicker than the coffees but the coffees are pretty. Was there around 8:30 am on a Friday. Everyone was friendly. Inside area with many working on laptops and outside area for lounging and people watching. Trendy little spot it seems like and worth the wait! I'll have to go back. read more

Love the coffee house interior design, very organic. Customer service is awesome. They are all pleasant. Why do I always go here? Organic COFFEE!!! This is what you call real coffee. Love their hot dark chocolate mocha, chaga mushroom latte sugar-free and the pandan latte! My all time favorite is the dark chocolate mocha latte. It's a perfect blend of bitter-sweet latte. Don't forget to try their scones with their different flavors of their homemade butter. My favorite is the ube and the original flavor. Of course, their original drench toast. You're trip here is not complete without trying these two! Everytime I am around La Mesa, I make sure I pass by to grab my coffee! Highly highly recommended! read more

Pros: Coffee was good. Counter staff was super friendly. Friend order breakfast sandwich and it looked good and she enjoyed it Very dog friendly. Cons: They still have dividers up between outside seating. It makes it hard for groups bigger than 4. They call your name out for your coffee, but deliver your food, so confusing. Employee told us we would be able to hear our names outside , but you can't. Only non diary option is oat. read more

They served a turmeric latte as a seasonal drink. I don't think it is currently on their menu. Hopefully they bring it back though, it's delicious!
Is this place pretty dog friendly?
We are definitely dog friendly : ) We even put out water bowls and have dog snacks. There’s an outdoor patio and as long as the dogs aren’t interrupting our other customer’s experience, indoor is ok too.
