For a few years now, I've been buying my beans, five pounds at a time, from Brew Coffee Spot in La Mesa. I like the roasting profile they use, and for a while, they've stocked a Costa Rica Sonora Black-Honey Natural that is just fantastic. Joe Paraiso, the owner, is a very experienced coffee purveyor, and he's been incredibly kind to me, sharing his time and knowledge to make sure I get what I want. And, not for nothing, when I'm at Brew Coffee Spot picking up the beans I ordered online, I always have a coffee. Joe either does a great job of training his baristas, or he's REALLY good at hiring talent, or both. When I moved back to San Diego six years ago, I had a meeting with someone at this shop, but because I've moved to a completely different part of the area I had not gone back. Recently, I spent some time back in La Mesa and thought I would go back and try this spot out. I've been here a couple of times, and overall it's been a good experience. Their lavender latte seems to be a popular choice, so I gave it a try, but it just wasn't for me. When I let them know, the staff was incredibly kind and quickly offered to replace it with a regular latte, which ended up tasting great. I love a freshly brewed tea, but having loose leaves in it is not enjoyable. I ordered the chamomile tea and on my first sip ended up with residue in my mouth. You should not have to worry about leaves floating around when drinking tea, and I have never been served tea like this before. You have to enter your order number and the exact dollar amount of your purchase. I ordered through the kiosk near the pickup area and declined the receipt, so I had to go back and figure out those details before I could log in.There's a two-hour WiFi limit, which feels reasonable since this place fills up quickly. This version was too thin and lacked the rich, condensed-milk creaminess that balances the bitterness of the roast. It's a decent semi-sweet coffee. Props for trying though. Bitchin' Avocado Toast ($10.40) Menu description: Avocado, Bitchin' sauce, sliced hardboiled egg, salt and pepper, and brew seasoning on rosemary bread. I dined in, and the avocado toast was served on a plate, which made it feel more cozy and intentional. I grabbed a packet of Tapatio from the condiments bar near pickup to go with it. Portion-wise, it felt fair for the price, especially compared to other café spots. You can't really mess up avocado toast. My only critique is that the avocado didn't have that fresh-cut taste. It felt more like a pre-prepped mash or spread, instead of freshly sliced or smashed in-house. It was missing that brighter flavor and texture. The chipotle-style sauce on top helped a lot, though. It added a nice punch of spice and made the overall bite more interesting. The rosemary bread held up well at first, but by the second half, it started getting messy with all the toppings. Not bad, just harder to eat cleanly. Ambiance and service I didn't interact much with staff since I ordered through the kiosk. I met my cousin for coffee on a Saturday afternoon. She chose Brew Coffee Spot. It was my second visit to this coffee shop, but the first time was a quick takeout visit over two years ago. We were both hungry so we took some time to look over the coffee and food menu. Really, it was much more extensive than I thought it would be. It would have been so hard to decide, but I was excited to find that they already had pumpkin spice lattes on the menu. For food, we decided to split the turkey pesto panini. It came with chips, but they were able to give us an option of a side salad. They were great about splitting the sandwich and salad on separate plates so we could share. When our food and drinks came out, it was nice to see they were on real plates and in real cups with real silverware. Not too many coffee shops do that these days. The sandwich was good and salad was fresh. I enjoyed the latte, though it wasn't the best pumpkin spice I ever had. I ordered it iced and it wasn't quite as cold as I would have liked. They have a large seating area with both indoor and outdoor seating. They sell a lot of cute cups and coffee accessories. All in all, it was a great experience. This review is about an experience I had about a year ago, which was also the last time I visited this cafe. With finals season coming around again, I was reminded of this place and my experience trying to study there. I normally don't leave negative reviews, but I felt it was worth sharing what happened. I purchased a drink and sat at an open table to study. About 20 minutes later, a man dressed in casual clothing approached me and told me he needed my table for an upcoming trivia event. When I asked who he was, he identified himself as the manager's son. What confused me was that there were other customers throughout the cafe studying and working at tables, yet I was the only person asked to move. The trivia event wasn't scheduled to start for another 30 minutes, and no alternative seating was offered despite the cafe being full. I wasn't upset that space was needed for an event, but I was disappointed by how the situation was handled. A simple explanation, advance notice, or effort to help me find another place to sit would have made a big difference. Instead, I packed up my things and left. As a paying customer who came specifically to study, I felt unwelcome and decided not to return. I hope management takes a more considerate approach to customer communication in the future. read more

Although they were VERY busy, I only waited about 10-15 mins for my drink and food. Not bad- and the wait went by quickly because I was sitting on a comfy couch. My peppermint mocha latte was good, but if you prefer a strong latte, I'd recommend adding an extra shot of espresso to your drink at this shop. Note: They have an extensive espresso menu with lots of unique options so I'll be excited to try something new next time. The caprese panini: this one was sooo good. We come here all the time because we don't live far. I've been living in La Mesa now for 2 years and we always come here for breakfast after a workout.
