Celebrated National Burger Day in Bryan/College Station this year. I went with two other friends to Proudest Monkey. One friend told me the owners are also the owners of the Tipsy Turtle on Northgate next to Texas A&M University. So, naturally, I was excited to try this place out. The venue is a little snug, but that is typical for a restaurant located in downtown Bryan. Although the venue was small, the menu was packin'! I really enjoyed the El Jefe burger. It had ground chuck chorizo, Cotija cheese, mango pico, cabbage (I didn't add cabbage to my burger), and jalapeño bacon ranch dressing. I would also say that the server/bar attendants were not that friendly - a bit inattentive and not smiley or welcoming. Someone brought my food out, sat it down, and just walked off. Sat at the bar and SO glad we did. The bartender was awesome with his recommendations! I had the burger of the month, the Guac-a-doodle-blu. If you don't do bread, ask for it in a lettuce wrap! This place is a super fun bar. The bartenders and servers are attentive and friendly, which always helps to have a good time. It has a great menu and the food is really tasty for pub food. The prices for the food, cocktails, and beer are all very reasonable. If it's the weekend expect the Monkey to be rather crowded. The space itself is narrow and deep, as the building is over 100 years old(I *think* the building was a saloon in the past don't quote me on that). The front half of the bar has tables and the bar is located at the center, so when it's busy you do kind of have to maneuver through the obstacles. The only drawback is (as is for every business in downtown Bryan) parking, but even if you have to walk a bit, downtown is clean, safe, and is nice to just stroll. Give the Proudest Monkey a try. Get the yucca! Good local Texan beer selection, tasty burgers, and a great server. The yucca was the show thief, however. It is normally part of a plantain and yucca dish, but they ran out of plantains, and we ended up ordering a second order of the yucca. read more

Our waitress who was the bartender (female with dyed white/silver hair) was so bad at her job. She obviously didn't want to be there. Not attentive at all and not friendly. The old fashioned had a pile of muddled cherries and orange in the bottom, making for a complex drink with minimal sweetness but big flavor. The "License to krill" taco was fresh and the mango pico added a subtle sweetness that was a good counterpoint to the shrimp. The pulled hammy taco was Carolina bbq and was great. Sweet pulled pork, tangy vinegar bbq sauce, crunchy cabbage- together it made a great bite. I think the tortillas were homemade or from a very good tortillaria and warmed properly before filling. The chorizo/beef burger (el jefe) is stellar. You can always build your own - a fried egg is a must if you go this route. Fries - maybe the best in the Brazos valley, not ready to make that call.
