Food here is decent, but the last 2 times I've tried to go here I ended up walking out. Both times when I walked in there were empty seats all over the dining area, and a couple uncleaned tables in the bar area. We were told there was a 15 minute wait each time the reason being they were under-staffed. All of the empty tables in the dining room and bar area, yet not enough staff there to wait on those tables or clean off the bar tables for. I can't even say it was very crowded either. Does make a great place for a quick drink though when there is room at the bar. read more

My husband and I went there for dinner with our 2 month old baby and was pleasantly surprised that the food was delicious. We ordered the special which was the seafood pasta and the sirloin sandwich. They were both awesome. The pasta was flavorful and the scallops and shrimps were cooked perfectly. The pasta was al dante and we found out it was homemade and it did taste like it too. The service was also great! The hostess gave us a corner table to accommodate the baby and our waitress Billy was delightful and attentive. I've been to Prospect Tavern several times and absolutely love it. The staff is always really friendly and accommodating. It's one of those places that you just immediately feel at home in. The crowd is always fun loving and while it can get a little crowded during their happy hour special, it is definitely worth it. I highly recommend hitting the tavern up on a Thursday night, they always have awesome local bands that always put the crowd in a good mood. Bar was nice and service was good. Drinks were cute in mason jars. Good selection of drafts. We setrled up when our table was ready . Dinner was another matter. Waiter was polite and attentive, but the kitchen was very slow. After 45 minutes the appetizers finally arrived. The waiter apologized for the kitchen. The were tasty and much appreciated. After another 20 minutes the waiter returned to let us know my daughter's salmon was no longer available. She then changed to a steak. We then decided after another 30 minutes to cancel our order and go to a diner. I have not walked out of a restaurant in a very long time. I had high hopes, but very disappointed. They were kind and did not charge us for the two soups and appetizers. I hope they fix the kitchen management issues. The food we had tasted good, just very slow. read more

We enjoy coming here, both for happy hour daily starting at 3 and for dinner. We like the menu choices, food is good, service sometimes slow but we're not usually in a rush while enjoying our drinks. My only negative was that our appetizer and dinners were served lukewarm- makes a big difference in how the food tastes. Meanwhile we enjoyed the crispy chicken wings , my Reuben open sandwich had moist and tender Corned Beef ( def recommend !) and my husband had his favorite salmon wrap. Prospect tavern has an amazing happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. every day. You cannot beat the price and they have on the selection of beers on tap and in the fridge. The food is wonderful and there are a few items that I recommend like the chicken bites they are delicious and very affordable during happy hour. Other than that the small bar gets very crowded at night it is not my scene but for happy hour I have yet to find a better place. read more

Neighborhood bar, always a good time. Dollar beer Tuesdays always draw a packed house. DJ plays popular music, could be better in my opinion but it's not a club so I don't want to be picky. Gave a 5 star rating because of the owners make me feel at home. I've been to Prospect 5 or 6 times over the past year and definitely wouldn't consider myself a regular, but the owner/bartender Anthony remembered my drink and how I like it served the very second time I came in. I don't know many bartenders that pay that much attention to detail, and definitely don't know any that own and operate their own business. Shout to you Ant if you ever read this! I have been coming to the prospect tavern for years and it just keeps getting better. We enjoy the dining room which has a very warm comfortable atmosphere. The wait staff are very attentive and quick bringing out the drinks. The food is always good, regardless of if it is their burgers, which are great or the steak which is also delicious. And sometimes just eat at the bar where they have 2 tv's. We enjoy going on the later side and staying for the music, great DJ on friday night which does karaoke who is so good, and music on Saturday night as well. The outdoor patio is so enjoyable on a warm evening. Highly recommend Prospect Tavern read more

I once walked in here 100% sober on a Friday night. All I did was walk in, lean up against a wall and take out my cell phone and browse The Internet/Facebook like half the other people in the bar. The owner of this place then accused me of "Having a few too many to drink already" and she refused to serve me alcohol. So I left and haven't been back since. Happy Hour 7 days a week from 3:00-6:00pm makes for a crowded bar. 1/2 priced beer and wine and a selection of appetizers. Last night there was a particularly rowdy group of guys and , though the bar wasn't as crowded as we've seen it, they took over the room with their noisy behavior. On top of that tried to blast music but luckily the bartender turned it to a more fun level. We like the regulars, like the food, especially the wings, burgers and Reuben Sandwich. Good pizzas too. The food is dependably good - my personal favorites include the salmon wrap, sliced prime rib sandwich and the turkey and Brie sandwich. Some of my family members are big fans of the Cuban or the burgers. They often have an interesting seasonal cocktail and they always have a large selection of beers. Cheapest beer is Coors Light bottle for $3.50, and mixed drinks are like $8.00 BWAHAHAHAHAHA Are you kidding me? Love this family-owned neighborhood bar in my hometown (maybe the only bar in Madison actually). I came here the other night after an Indian wedding, dressed in a sari, to meet my sister (I bet that was a first for them). Drinks are cheap and the owners and bartenders have just as much fun as the patrons... this is definitely a spot for regulars. The food is actually one of the better things about this place because they can't make a dirty martini for doodley squat. They don't carry my vodka and it's always cool not cold, with scads of olive juice (too much!) but zero olives--or any garnish for that matter! The bartender last time I went (August 2012) looked like she just turned 21 and served my martini w/out a napkin underneath, which of course would then drip shitty Stoli and condensation onto my dress had I not requested one. But this is bartending 101, no? Stick to beer or whiskey. The food is your standard pub fare and hit or miss, just like the service. Anything with beef here is good, especially the skirt and porterhouse steak. The bar is shaped like a horseshoe with TV monitors at both ends. They have a pretty outdoor area where you can grab a smoke and also a juke box inside. Happy hour and karaoke nights liven things up. It's conveniently located near the train station and there is plenty of free parking nearby. Crowd is decent mixture of local mature adults, collegiate coeds and blue-collar types. read more

The food is horrible at this place. I know that it is new, but they need to get their act together. The bar area is nice and large, but the service is really bad - they didn't know how to handle alot of people (we waited for our table in the dining room for an hour). The other major problem is the seating. They made the dinning room too small and crammed too many tables in there. We were basically sitting on top of the two tables on either side of us. In order for someone to get in to the one table, two people had to get up from our table to let them in. Really bad. And then to top it off, the food was just gross. Nasty mashed potatoes (that tasted worse than frozen food) and undercooked hamburgers with buns that just crumbled as you ate them. We couldn't wait to get out of there. read more

When it first opened, it was a cool place to stop in for a burger and drink. A few months later I stopped in and the place was packed for dinner. Not bad for "tavern" food and the service was excellent. I was in there last December and the place was slow. The food was "OK" - but it's tavern food, so all in all, it is what it is - if they take the "Beef & Ale" off the name, I think expectations wouldn't be so high and better match what you're really getting. I hadn't been in a while since, but after a bad experience across the street at L'Allegria, my group decided to go in there for a drink to cap the night. There is a woman behind the bar who couldn't have been more wrong for the job. Ordering drinks from her was painful. She couldn't remember the drink order - for no other reason than she would rather continue a conversation with another customer on the other side of the bar. After one drink, she'd come over and ask me for money to pay. Reminding her there are several other drinks in my order, she huffs and walks off to make them. Again, only returning with second of the four drinks, saskskes me for payment. Now I"m in a huff. I re-order the next two drinks. She brings me one of them (mine) and begins making the fourth and final one. I taste mine, and it's bad. Not her fault. The beverage tap must be out of mixer and it needs changing. It's not my first day at a bar, I've seen this before so I already have another drink in mind that won't require anything from the tap. After chatting for a few more minutes, then finally delivering the final drink I tell her the tap is out and needs changing and this drink is no good - and probably the drink she's delivering isn't good either. She put up a finger to silence me and says, "whaddaya want me to do about it - give them to you for free?". I'm about out of patience, but I reserve my temper and say, "no, I know it's a bit involved, so I've got two other drinks that don't require the tap." She says she can't be bothered and will give me beer. The guy behind the bar with her hearing all this starts to snicker ... the look on his face is one that has seen her like this before. I take back the drinks from my two friends and we walk out. Mentioning this to a few people around town, and they say they all know her - she's a crusty, ornery, person with a very short fuse. Sadly the rest of the staff are scared of her. None of them wanted to help the customer, rather stay clear of her when she's in these moods. It's a shame too. The place has a quaint, albeit cramped charm to it. They could do a lot better without her. I understand the owner of this place was partners with his brother at L'Allegria - but no longer working together. You really need to sit down and work things out. Both places need you two together to work out your staffing issues. You have good places with poor staff. read more

While I love to go out and experience new foods and drinks, this place is a MUST NOT! First of all the food was HORRIBLE! Everything including the chicken finger and mozzarella sticks were burnt. The sandwiches included too much cheese, such as the eggplant sandwich where you would be swallowing copious amounts of goat cheese in each bite. The bar was not very nice and it didn't even seem like they washed the glassware properly. Everyone else must have learned from their first time there not to go back! Another thing is that the owners seemed VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. The owners, who were sitting at the bar when we walked in, did not even greet us!
