Sat at the bar to dine. Johnny served us and was very polite. The food we ordered was very good and consistent. Tried the tuna tartare -- fresh and great with the wonton chips provided. Hamachi crudo -- fresh and also delicious (probably could be sliced thinner or chopped to better the experience of the texture). Second, we had the tagliatelle -- great portion to be shared and good flavor profiles; it was subtle but tasty. For mains, the black bass -- cooked well and another good portion size. I liked the creativity of the dish pairing, thought the okra went nicely. Also, the burger -- loved the french fries, and the tile fish which was subtle but also very good. Cocktails were sufficient. We didn't order anything spectacular. We also didn't order any steak; I was steered away from that. Overall a good food experience and I think worth dining. read more

Mom and i walk route to downtown madison almost every day that i am at home in NJ. Friday evening walk and now that i'm an adult with a job ig i was ITCHING for an end of week brewski. We were like lets try this place out. Mom got a glass of rose prosecco and i got a cocktail that tasted like black cherry white claw. We both got So unreasonably crunk and walked the long uphill home. Then i baked a carrot cake until 2AM. I don't write reviews often.... My wife and I have given this place countless opportunities, at least 10. Each time they've fallen short - typically on front of house service. Usually you can expect to be ignored, watch the bartender look at your empty glass several times and not ask if you'd like another. Despite the high prices, we constantly gave them another chance because while the service disappointed the food was always stellar. Tonight, the service was great when they were around, but the kitchen is where it broke down. Salads were taking 45 minutes so the front of house was chipping in back of house. Worst of all, the food was subpar. Honestly pains us to write this - never wanted a place to succeed so badly that just can't seem to get it together. We've given this place enough chances, won't be back. read more

The Madison wine and tap room is a great addition to the downtown Madison. It is located behind the walgreens with ample of parking. When I went I made a reservation and they needed it since they were busy, the second time a reservation wasn't really needed. In the front there are a bunch of items to pick up for take out with some fresh pasta, cookies, sandwiches. In the back there is a restaurant and bar. The pizzas are amazing ! We really enjoyed it here. I went again for brunch and I will say the brunch was subpar. The service and the food was just average. My BF and I tried it out Friday night. Very happy for them that they seem to have a good business going as the tables & bar were about 70% full and there was a consistent takeout business. Attached to the Madison Market, this sleek and sophisticated space allows you to get together with friends, family, coworkers and more for all kinds of drinks or food. The ambiance is great and there are some screens that offer sports viewing. There are over 25 wines for you to pick from, and you can pick how big your pour is, so ypu can try several! 1 oz, 3 oz or 6 oz. The wine bottles are loaded into machines so the pours seem to be aerated a little more than usual, pretty cool! I actually started witj a cocktail on my first visit- the Rose City was delightful! I am recommending it to all of my friends in the area. My only criticisms are that not all of the wines available on their menu are sold at the Madison Market, even though they have a lot for sale - and I went on a Tuesday and their "small plates" menu was much smaller than usual. AMAZING SPOT!!! We made a reservation after seeing this place come up on Open Table and we loved it! Super chic restaurant with great service, great drinks, and great food! A more casual, chic spot. Get there for happy hour if you can. The drink deals are great. We ordered everything to share, but the mushroom risotto was out of this world. We licked the plate clean! The pizza was wonderful, and our waiter recommended we get it "well done" which was a GREAT suggestion. The pizza was so nice and crisp. Overall amazing experience! Overall we had a nice time, but for the price I really wouldn't go back. I went once before with another couple and had a better time. They really need something on their menu like a basket of fries - even if they cost $12 - because the portions are quite small and I'd want something else to round it out next time. The restaurant has a Sunday brunch that is quite good. You can order breakfast items, lunch items or pizza. If you don't feel like dealing with a crowded diner or pancake house, this is the place for you. Plus you can get a mimosa or a prosecco to relax with while you wait. I've had their omelets and burgers among other things, nothing to complain about. Good French fries or home fries. The service is good and friendly and accommodating. The only thing that is weird is that they don't automatically provide condiments. If you want salt for your fries, you have to ask. Same with pepper. Toast comes without butter either on the toast or on the side. You have to ask for it. Same with ketchup for the burgers or fries. If I knew this up front I'd know to ask, but as it was, we ended up waiting with our entrees cooling while they went back and got these items. It's kind of hospital style in that regard. Still, this is a great addition to the Madison dining scene and I want it to succeed! read more

Was hopeful trying this place for the first time. Came for an early dinner with my parents. Noise level wasn't very loud at 5:30. Tried the pizza special which was great. Steak tacos were tasty as well. Quinoa and garbanzo salad was ok but needed some more flavor (lemon and salt?). Disappointed in the steak frites - steak was dry and flavorless and the cuts weren't very good. My family was split on the burger - one loved it and the other thought it was too greasy. Most disappointing was the service - or rather the lack thereof. Waiter was slow to come to the table, but after apologizing the first time them took over 29 minutes to get us our drinks. He only came back to check on our table once we had our mains when we were almost done eating. My husband and I would have liked to order a glass of wine for our main course but we're never offered the opportunity. Even refills on soda and ice teas were limited. There was no excuse for the poor service. The restaurant wasn't busy. Even though we were celebrating a birthday, dessert was out of the question. God knows how much longer that would have taken. Plus $18 for an awful glass of Chardonnay? I wouldn't come back. read more

Second try tonight. Very good food and nice wine selection , but bad service. Last week we sat at the bar, and were ignored by no less than 4 staff for about 15 minutes before we could even order a drink, and then only because we asked for it. Tonight we tried a table. We ordered wine with the food but it came only after we asked for it, half way through the starter. The waiter who brought the starter first offered it to a neighboring table. As we ate, we witnessed another couple leave the bar angry because they had not been attended to after a long wait. Needs at least another bartender (mixologist working hard) and at most a retrain of all staff to me more attentive to customers. Unlikely we will try a third time. read more

Food was good but very expensive for what you get. Meatball appetizer was $18 for two meatballs. I asked for extra ricotta cheese and wasn't warned that I would be charged for it. My friend asked to add beets to her salad instead of the tomatoes it came with and was charged 8.00. For beets?? Just make sure you read the fine print at the top of the wine menu too. They charge by 3oz/6oz/bottle. I didn't see the fine print and asked for a glass of Sancerre. When the check came it was $30! For one glass. Being a former server myself and the company I was with was as well, I feel like the server should ask do you want 3oz or 6oz if you ask for a glass instead of automatically trying to upsell you (and by double the price). I tried to find a manager to talk to about this and couldn't find one. I ended up spending almost $80 for two meatballs, a glass of wine and half of a tuna tartar appetizer. Don't think I'll be back. Ambiance is cute though I will say that. But too many turn offs and there are more reasonably priced small plates restaurants in the area. read more
