I've been wanting to check out Providence Bar & Kitchen after viewing exciting cocktail content on its socials. I dropped in at 7:30 PM on a Saturday night and grabbed a seat at the bar. The space has a warm and modern feel. On the food side, I enjoyed a beet salad. The dish was beautifully presented with a generous portion of beets underneath a tower of greens, topped with a fried goat cheese cake. Delicious! For cocktails, I started with "The Perfect Pairing" - a seasonal whiskey cocktail with Widow Jane applewood rye, Aperol, spicy pear liqueur, bitters, and muddled orange. I really enjoyed this sturdy cocktail. I'm not much of a dessert cocktail person, but Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream is my flavor, so I indulged with mixology ace Giovanni's "Mint Chocolate Martini." Pumping up the vanilla vodka, creme de menthe and another liqueur was mint chocolate ice cream. Other guests were raving about the espresso martinis (that use freshly brewed espresso right off the machine). It's safe to say that dessert cocktails are a strong suit at Providence Bar! Chatting with owner Eric, I learned that the patio has a retractable roof which will be opening up with warmer weather close at hand. They also hold special events (wine and food pairings, cigar nights, mixology classes). With great food, cocktails, and service - Providence Bar is highly recommended. Summary: Food was excellent. Overall service was lacking. We arrived at the restaurant and we were seated promptly. The host provided us with our menus upon each of us sitting in our chair, and we thought we were in for a nice customer experience. Upon being seated, we waited about 10 minutes to get bread and water, and then another 10 minutes after that for someone to take our drink order...and then the bar was backed up, so we did not get a drink in hand until about 30 minutes in. You would think that if it took that long to get drinks, you might want to put the appetizer order in when we ordered the drinks. This did not happen. We did not put our food order in until about 45-60 minutes. The apps we ordered were very good. The entrees were good as well, although upon ordering filet mignon medium rare, the meat was severely undercooked (essentially raw and jiggling). We had to request the order be heated to the correct temperature, which our waiter did without hesitation. Unfortunately, as we waited for this to occur the rest of our meals waited to be consumed. We then ordered our coffees/desserts - only 2. Our coffees came out within about 10 minutes, which we finished in another 10 minutes. Dessert did not hit our table for about 25 minutes. We had a 6pm reservation for 3 people. The entire meal took 2.5 hours to compete. We only ordered a total of 3 alcoholic beverages, 3 apps, 3 entrees and 2 desserts. From my perspective, the restaurant did not staff an adequate number of wait staff for the volume of customers. Additionally, there should be a dedicated staff member that can run drinks to tables. Even the person that filled water glasses and delivered bread was falling behind. She brought out apps plates to our table as we were finishing up our apps and eating out of our bread plates. Not a big deal, but just added to the underperforming service. Again, food quality was excellent, but the restaurant did not nail a great service experience on this night. What a cute spot! Plenty of seating indoor or outdoors. The bartender, Thomas, was informative and friendly! As per his recommendation we split 2 Apps, the lamb chop lollipops and the calamari. The zeppole at the end were a big hit, though they were more like beignets than traditional zeppole. Absolutely Stunning! Wait until the Michelin guide hears about this place! We stumbled into Providence Bar & Kitchen rather randomly, expecting a trap rock experience, which is to say decent fare. How surprised were we when were treated to a Le Bernadin class of experience. Their menu is extensive, with each item conceptualized and executed to perfection. No detail overlooked, with each ingredient fresh, and expertly put together. I would not be surprised if there were taste tastes upon taste tests to get it exactly right prior to offering the dish to market. I have had swordfish with seasoning which revolutionized the dish here. Octopus, never chewy, expertly prepared. The wine list isn't just sommelier curated but picked to give the patron a new experience, a new take on what they had already tried. Overall, it is hard to be surprised with a dining experience given the option, but this place absolutely nailed it. Service was top notch. Giovanni understood the art of catering and making an experience truly elevated. The staff behind this pace is other level. read more

Admittedly, I think that the major reason for my meh experience here was because I came in a group. We had a (pre-planned and reservation made) party of about 20 people. I'm not sure if they underestimated how much staffing they'd need or what, but service-wise this was a difficult lunch to have. Started with appetizers. They were fine. The calamari was actually pretty good. Arancini and the meatballs were not my favorite. Mussels are just not the most shareable appetizer. The waiter went around and asked who wanted a caesar salad. In the end, maybe 70% of the people who asked for one were given one the first go-round and then probably 85% of those who asked ultimately got one. While the apps came out fast, the mains took an exorbitant amount of time. We were really the only party there so I'm not sure what the place is like if things get busy. But non-exaggeratedly they probably took about an hour to 75 minutes to come out. At that point, I had really had enough calamari to call it a day on a meal and took the salmon home. This salmon was fine, a fairly nice piece of fish. The seasoning and sauce were fine. Do I think it was particularly "parmesan-crusted" as advertised-not really but I didn't mind that. But do I think it was a skosh expensive for a lunchtime dish? A bit. Ultimately I think maybe they were just overwhelmed. A solid example is asking for lemons for the water three times to two separate people before getting it-which isn't a big deal but when you're waiting there for so long waiting for food it does weigh in. The parking lot in the back is a very nice option. So maybe it's better for smaller meals, who knows. But I wouldn't recommend having a larger party here. read more

Had an enjoyable meal here celebrating my wife's birthday. The service was spot on - cool, pleasant, knowledgeable wait staff. There was live music from a pianist that was perfect. Tried their NY Sour cocktail, which is a bourbon sour topped with red wine - interesting. We ordered the calamari to share; they were happy to adjust the order to remove the peppers for the kids. The octopus app was tender and delicious. My wife enjoyed her mushroom bisque. The kids got the pasta - clam liguine and pasta bolognese - large plates, next day leftovers! I liked the branzino. Now, I wouldn't say it was bad, but it certainly wasn't great and it wasn't really worth the price that they charge. We had the Sushi Pizza, never again! The fish did NOT taste fresh and it was a bit bland. I had the sausage pasta which was okay at best. The pasta choice of these tiny shells was interesting and it had a nice bite to it but the flavor was very one dimensional. My partner go the steak frites but deemphasis on the steak since it was so tiny. Ultimately, it just wasn't what one would expect for the price so overall not worth it. read more

My husband and I had a wonderful dinner tonight. We started with a drink at the bar. The bartender made me a mocktail that was quite good. We shared a Caesar salad that was so good. The eggplant was sliced thin and lightly breaded. My husband loved the salmon. We shared the cheesecake - highly recommend. Our waiter Caesar was excellent! Service couldn't have been better. As frequent fliers since it first open in 2014, we continue to enjoy the great service, fresh food and welcoming ambiance of owner and staff. As such, a refresh of prior reviews is long over due. Now more than ever, amidst the social restrictions of the day, we find ourselves relaxing on the outdoor patio, under the night sky or weather-proof awning. I went back last Friday and the food is not as good as it was before. We ordered three appetizers, each one either overcooked or not crispy as it supposed to be. I wish I could give this place 0 stars. Not even sure where to begin. While I know that they are popular and my review won't make them lose their current/loyal customers, I would like to at least give the ones who haven't gone some heads up. The food is horrible and overpriced for the quality you get. They serve frozen meatballs and chicken tenders to children. It was disgusting. The service was decent, but we felt rushed. From the moment we sat down, until the moment we got up, we we're rushed. We spent 200$ and literally spent an hour, maybe an hour and 15 minutes at most. Like I said, I know I can't stop their loyal customers from going, but me, I am never going back and would never recommend this place to anyone. First time here. Nice atmosphere, good drinks, decent food. BUT I ordered a salad that was very reasonably priced at 13 and asked if I could add chicken. bill comes and the 'added chicken' was 14 bucks. I have never added chicken to a salad and the chicken costs more than the salad!!! i checked with the waiter to make sure i was reading it right. Yup! He gave me a 'sorry' but thats it. My wife and I had dinner at Providence Bar and Kitchen. Like our last experience, food and atmosphere were excellent. Prices a bit high but the value is there! We had one situation which the restaurant handled very professionally: our mains came almost immediately after we finished our appetizers. Much to quickly. When I complained both the waitress and the manager apologized profusely and took responsibility for the lapse. And the apologies continued. Hey, mistakes happen. It's the way a service business recovers and resolves a mistake that makes a difference. The waitress and the manager were sincerely and genuinely sorry. I was very impressed (and a little embarrassed I had complained). I would recommend Providence for many reasons; service is right there at the top! We will be back - regularly. read more

This was the first time eating here. Staff was friendly and attentive. My granddaughter had the ravioli and loved it. I had shrimp francaise and it was so delicious! My husband had sirloin . He likes it rare. It was sizzling on a platter long enough for it to be more medium. Although he said it was " okay", for the price it should have been terrific. We would eat here again, but he'll try something else. All in all I would say try this restaurant. The staff really was that good and I was not disappointed!! read more

I had been at the center where the Providence Bar and Kitchen is located probably 150 times for other businesses located there and never even noticed this restaurant! However, we were looking for something on Open Table and this one came up. We were able to get an easy reservation on the Open Table app., and the food and service were fantastic! We started with a round of drinks that were on the Specials menu. The dragon fruit mojito and the Tequila Veritas were great. For our appetizers, we order one Fried Eggplant & Melted Burrata and One Classic Caesar Cardini and we split the 2 for 4 adults. The portions were big enough for us all to have a nice taste! The Eggplant was tender, breaded to perfection and the tomato sauce and baby arugula were to die for! The Caesar was one of the best I've had at a restaurant all the way down to the two crustinies and the fresh white anchovies. I make a killer home made Caesar and am usually not happy with restaurant Ceasars, but this one definitely made the grade of A+. The wait staff was super helpful and attentive all the way, and really made us feel at home. Provided extra plates for sharing, with no hasile. Practiced social distancing with gloves and masks, and were engaging and friendly. For our mains, we ordered three entre's to share family style. Shrimp Francese, Chicken Scarpariello, and Mixed Seafood Linguine (which was not on the menu that night, but they made it for us anyway!) Everything was perfectly prepared and melted in your mouth. The flavors were definitely there. Typically, I don't write a lot of reviews, but this meal was prepared and executed to perfection, and certainly worth taking the time to spread the word. An absolute 5 in my book. Great food, great service, great setting. First off, they easily and readily accommodated every request we had whether it be for the heating lamp at the table, odd drink requests, or substitutions on the dishes. Major shout out to our server Mainor as well as the manager on duty and our food runners. Everyone raved about their dishes. I had the steak frites. Others very much enjoyed the veal Providence, Mediterranean Chicken, and a Swordfish special. Appetizers and desserts were comparable to our mains. We were here for the first time Sunday night. Our dinner was hit or miss. The hits-We shared a wedge salad and it was a nice size portion with plenty of blue cheese. The tomatoes were sweet. We ordered the Salmon with Pistachio crust. It was a nice size portion and was well prepared. Now the misses- The corn risotto served with Salmon was unremarkable. The Angus meatball appetizer was not beef as Angus infers. They tasted like frozen turkey meatballs. The Steak Frittes was accompanied by a chimichurri that tasted like parsley and olive oil were put in a food processor. Chimchurri should not be smooth but have texture from the chopped ingredients. It lacked flavor of the garlic, shallots and other ingredients. The sauce did nothing to enhance the steak. As others have stated the service was very rushed and because it was not busy the staff was hovering around just waiting to take your dish. It was uncomfortable. The first time we went to the Providence Bar and Kitchen we had a wonderful experience. The staff was wonderful. I would have given it 5 stars. We enjoyed it so much, we returned a week later for an early dinner. I am sorry to say, it was a different experience. The staff was still great, but we had an issue that was handled poorly. My girlfriend ordered a sliced steak, medium. It came out almost raw. When she tried to send it back, we were told the chef did not recommend putting it back under the broiler, as it was sliced, it would dry out. So, she was stuck with a steak she could not eat. I'm sorry, but the restaurant should have prepared a new steak, just the way she ordered it. It was not her fault the steak was not prepared the way she ordered it She did not eat that night They gave us a slice of cheesecake, but that doesn't cut it. We paid for a meal we didn't eat. I'm disappointed, because I thought we might have found a new "go to " place. read more

Must admit, I had high hopes for PB&K but left quite disappointed. The place itself is nice and the parking is awesome. However, the tables in the main dining room are placed too close to each other. Conversation between two people is beyond challenging. And, to add insult to injury, while we were there, they decided to add an extra table to accommodate a larger party and pushed the tables even closer than they were before. My wife, who was sitting on the inside, couldn't even get out of her seat to use the restroom. Now for the food. There is no easy was to say this - it just was just not good. Maybe we ordered the wrong items. Maybe we were there on an off night. The grilled octopus appetizer had decent taste but it consisted of only one small piece of octopus. Not a great value. My wife's Salmon was dry and had little taste. My seared Halibut was seared so much that it was dry and chewy. Based on the disappointing appetizer and entrees, we decided to take a pass on dessert. The bar area is small but was nice and the cocktail menu was impressive. Maybe we go back for drinks at the bar. Definitely not for dinner. read more

I have a feeling that this may become one of our new "go to" places. We've been to this location before when it was a different restaurant, and wow, they did a great job renovating​ this place. They've installed an awesome canopy in the back with heat lamps​ which will make for​ a great 3 season dining experience. We went on a Saturday without reservations and we're happy that the manager found us a spot in the bar. Our server could not have been faster or more accommodating​. The food was good, not great, but I think it may have just been what we ordered. We will definitely​ be back! read more

Do yourself a favor if you don't want to take out a mortgage to eat good food and go a little further down Springfield Avenue to a restaurant in Berkeley Heights, Lupa.
