Been going to D'oro's for years and so glad the recently reopened for weekday lunches again. The owner, Sam, is one of a kind, hands on, so attentive, and makes you feel like family. The food, always fresh and delicious. Just yesterday we had the mushroom ravioli (yum!) and you can never go wrong with the Gorgonzola gnocchi! Like with many restaurants during the pandemic, staffing was difficult at first but they are back and going strong. True gem right on Main Street in Chatham! Highly recommend! A standard Italian restaurant with standard prices for Chatham but there are better Italian restaurants. I came with 3 others and was dissapointed by a few things. 1. The wait staff was very chatty and it was distracting. 2. 2 of us ordered the lamb chop special and one was to be cooked medium but both came out well-done. 3. The meatball appetizer was decent but not a standout. The interior is lovely and does give a nice Italian vibe but for the price, the food was quite underwhelming. read more

Came here for a baby shower & what a tiny cute restaurant right on the Main Street. Appetizers were delicious. We had the stuffed mushrooms (an absolute must try), calamari, mozzarella caprese, & mini baked eggplant rollentini. For lunch I had veal with mashed potatoes, & vegetables in a light Marsala sauce. Hate to leave a low review for this place, but I was so underwhelmed by the dinner I had there recently. The ambiance is nice, and it's byob which can save you $. Staff is lovely. But the food was so disappointing. Had the salmon, which was served with a large spear of steamed broccoli, one cooked carrot stick, and about 2 tablespoons of mashed potatoes. Plating was boring and almost looked institutional. The only creative (and I use the term loosely) element to the dish was the champagne mustard sauce for the salmon. Someone else got a chicken dish that looked bland and boring and tasted average. Caesar salad was pretty saturated in dressing. And the bread they bring to the table reminded me of lightly toasted Wonder bread. Things tasted ok overall, but everything was a dish I could've made at home. Super tight seating ... waiters constantly bumping you. Service is ok - they try. Food is almost inedible - my pasta was undercooked (forget Al Dente - this thing was brittle!). Celebratory dinner and the food did not disappoint!! Each entree was absolutely delicious. Our favorite appetizer was the zucchini flowers, loaded with ricotta and fried to perfection. I need to bump my review up to a 5 after our meal last night. We were able to secure a table for 14 only 2 weeks before Christmas and upon arrival we found we weren't the only ones who decided to get all of their local friends together for a holiday feast @ D'Oro. There were 3 or four other groups of over a dozen diners which I'm sure is difficult to manage for the staff. That said, our waiter did a fantastic job managing our boisterous table, taking our orders and getting all of our hot meals on the table all with a span of about a minute. As you can imagine the place was packed with many tables serving multiple groups during our stay. You would think that the quality of the food might slip on such a busy night but on the contrary everything was just as delicious as always. Everyone seemed to love their entrees. I once again had the Cornish Hen which was incredible. On top of the delicious food, the professionalism of the gracious staff made this a special night for all of us. Well done D'Oro! read more

I give it a 3 but could easily be a 4 star with a little help. The chef has a heavy hand in the salt, dial it back a little let the flavors work for you. The fried calamari appetizer were big pieces of calamari that are too chewy. The special veal meatballs were excellent except to much salt. The linguine and clams are very good along with the veal campagnola. The linguine all's scoglio was great except for the salt again would be a great addition to add some toasted bread crumbs on top! The service is great and the people are nice. I will be back again please just fix the heavy hand on the salt. read more

The restaurant was very busy and the kitchen seemed like it was struggling to keep up (week before Christmas so will give them a pass on the service). The calamari appetizer was not cooked and was luke warm. it was cleaned properly but the coating was mushy. The arancini was delicious and hot. We were a party of four and two of the entrees arrived and the reaming two were delivered several minutes later. All the mains were delicious (although we never did receive the grated cheese for the pasta) . We had an early reservation and service was great when we arrived, but as the restaurant filled, our table got less attention (and there was a long wait for a table when we left). The noise level is pretty high. The little flaws won't deter us from returning but probably won't order the calamari again. read more

Absolutely delicious! First time here with friends. My shrimp Francese was amazing. Husband is still raving about the pork chop and penne with vodka was awesome as well. Came here for date night with my husband and we had such a great time. Service was so great, all the staff are so attentive and friendly without feeling like there is always someone over your shoulder. We were seated quickly, the tables are so clean and crisp. Each table has a beautiful yellow rose that matches the walls which creates a warm ambiance. We were given delicious warm bread with a herb olive oil that was too good to stop eating. For our appetizers we ordered the fried calamari, mussels, mozzarella caprese and the arugula salad to share. Everything was perfect, I'm still drooling just thinking about the fried calamari. For our entrees, my husband got the pork chop, he loved it! It was cooked perfectly with a delicious sweet taste from the balsamic reduction and the medley of peppers and potatoes was just the right addition for the meal. I ordered the chicken caprese and it was also cooked perfectly. For dessert, we split a creme brulée and I had a cappuccino. Honestly I was just so impressed with all the food being so delicious and at such great prices, you get 5 star food and service without feeling like your dinner is a special occasion splurge. On top of that this place is byob and I've never experienced such great timing with dishes coming out. Also, forgot to mention above that as we were coming in they had just finished a private party for about 50 people.... 1. Everyone leaving looked happy and satisfied 2. More than one guest told us we had to try a specific dish on their way out 3. This did not hold up us getting a table and they transformed the space from private party balloons and decor to their normal restaurant space so quickly and effortlessly, I didn't even realize it happened until after it was done. New York Times was wrong about d'oro. They were argumentative and difficult. I used to believe when dining out, the customer was always right, but at D'Oro, they are dead wrong. When I asked the waiter for NO Scallops, this does not mean that I wanted them. I said NO Scallops. The waiter replied... " you want them, they're delicious" What I said was NO SCALLOPS! What ever happened to the customer is right? At D'Oro, the customer is never right. I didn't want extra cheese on the salad, again, he said that I wanted it.. NO.. What specifically did I say to WANT what I did not want? We're never coming back.. is that enough? read more

This space was Danielle's for a while, then Fuoco came in and lasted a few months. My guess is that D'Oro will be here for quite a long time. The owners are a couple that have lived in the area for a while. He acts as maitre'd, occasional waiter and helps out in the kitchen on occasion, and I've seen her acting as the front of the house quite a bit as well. Everything I have had here so far is great, and we've been here a lot. D'Oro is classic Italian done really well. On the appetizers/salads, I can definitely recommend the portabella pizette, the calamari and the spinach salad. The pizette especially, with a nice light basil pesto and tomatoes over a great portabello mushroom, is great. If they have a pasta special, it's usually available as an appetizer portion as well. On the dinner side, you're good with whatever you get, but I have to specifically mention the cornish hen. I hardly ever get chicken or chicken related meals for dinner. This pan roasted boneless cornish hen with escarole and cannellloni beans was much tastier and better than I ever expected. In fact, I should have gone there tonight, because unlike a lot of other local restaurants, D'Oro is open on Mondays. And there's one little point of contention that keeps D'Oro from getting to five stars. I have been here on a few Mondays, and on two occasions they seemed understaffed. The first time apparently one of the cooks did not come back for the dinner shift. This led to very long delays for meals, but the owner was gracious and we came back again. There were some delays this time as well. Nothing near bad enough to keep me from coming back, but I'll think twice about making another Monday trip (but damn that cornish hen is good). What a pleasant surprise in the heart of dwntown Chatham. The serivce was fabulaous and the food very, very tasty. Only complaint at all would be that the portiuon sizes were not 'NJ Strong'. Take the time to enjoy this place though. All of the servers were very friendly, and even though it is BYOB the staff offered us a Sambuca with coffee beans to top off our meal. I ordered chicken and sausage which was not on the menu and they were more than happy to accomodate. The dish was very well prepared and nicely served. It was perfectly spiced. Others ordered the posk chop and specially prepared chicken and were very happy with their choices. Check this place out if you are in the area. CHatham is not Madison when it comes to downtown ambience, but you will be very happy with your choice of this 'second city' Italian restaurant. read more

Just had a very good dinning experience. The food was excellent (as you can see from the pictures). They had a burrata mozzarella on special which was amazing. The only flaw was the bread they brought out seemed to have been cut earlier in the afternoon and when the waiter dropped off the dessert menus he didn't tell us they were out of three (bread pudding and lava cake were out and our two choices). As I walked in for the first time, the place was reminiscently packed and noisy like a Chinese Dim Sum restaurant. (Unfortunately, for me, no dumplings.) A mess o' old people permeated the clientele with a smattering of very young children. Many of the aged may have lost their teeth and taste buds at this point. I was disappointed when it came to menu choices, as they were not very accommodating. The menu was like a law that was laid down with no accommodations except for charging an extra $2 for what finally came as a very small CESEAR SALAD which was not only not worth a share charge but was a total failure with some lonely looking, very finely chopped lettuce that a tablespoon was needed because the fork could not be inserted into a leaf. There was so little dressing, that they must have used an atomizer on the tasteless salad. All the main entrée plates, no matter what was ordered, came out looking formatted like an Applebees plate might look; 1 pre-measured rounded scoop of this, 3 of this, and 1 of this in a uniform pattern. Not what one would expect for a somewhat pricey restaurant. Now down to the "nitty-gritty". The VERDURE ALLA GRIGLIA that came with too little goat cheese, had very small fine grains of sand in it. The PORTOBELLA PIZZATTE also played in the sand box. This dish said it came with Heirloom Tomatoes and, I assumed they were fresh cut unaltered, but they ended up as hot and stewed under the mushroom with bland tasting cheese on top. (I would have preferred smoked mozzarella rather than the generic tasteless cheese and with and a real fresh slice of tomato.) The CALAMARI FRITTI was cut too wide for me. Some of it was chewy and some mushy. The batter on the outside was not very crisp and was soggy in too many pieces. It looked like maybe it was either not fried long enough or the frying temp was not hot enough. But I have to say that the Grilled GAMBARI AL PIACERE in itself was tasty. I also liked the fresh made mashed potatoes. The Ricotta Cheesecake, while tasty, goes under the "gritty" heading. No, it didn't have sand it. Buon appetito. read more

The menu offers the same old same old Italian you can get at the pizza place down the street. The desserts are amazing though. I wish the chef would come up with some other dishes. Can't fathom why anyone would go here. Chicken cacciatore consisted of small piece of chicken breast cut in half with generic tomato sauce and mashed potatoes. Tasteless and not worthy of the name of chicken cacciatore . Service was ok but there are so many better and authentic Italian restaurants in the area. Totally disappointed.if you notice most pictures were taken many years ago. Had arugula salad and the pictures shows chunks of goat cheese. Mine had slight sprinkling of goat cheese. D'Oro doesn't quite live up to its name (which means "golden" as they proudly state on their website). The food is very good though not excellent. The portions are small and certainly not worth the prices. I had the Petto di Pollo Farcito (described as "chicken breast filled with parma prosciutto, mushrooms, fontina cheese, spinach, fresh sage baked with Madeira wine sauce"). There was very little cheese and I neither saw nor tasted any mushrooms or prosciutto. In fact the only thing I tasted at all was the wine sauce which overpowered everything else. Suffice it to say, it could've been been better. For dessert I had the cannoli which was fantastic, but then again, when is a cannoli ever not fantastic? The space D'Oro occupies is fairly small and, though they don't pack too many people in, it seems pretty cramped to sit there for any length of time, especially given that the chairs are rather uncomfortable. It's also extremely loud. I'm told the restaurants that occupied that space previously were even louder though I don't see how that's possible. The staff was friendly and helpful however our waiter was very difficult to understand, partly because of his accent but mostly because of the noise level. He did go out of his way to try to annunciate each of the specials and desserts so he is certainly not to blame. They really ought to just print out the specials and desserts to avoid the confusion. It would also cut down on the noise as the waiters wouldn't have to speak over the din to be heard. Overall it wasn't a bad dining experience but I wouldn't recommend it. read more
