Came here for dinner for a birthday dinner. Valet parking (which is unnecessary for this place). Not sure how to describe the decor, mix between an Italian grandma's living room and French. It's a $72, for course dinner. A single piece of shrimp in a mustard dressing to start, paradelle with veal as an appetizer, snapper for main, and ricotta cake for dessert. Our waiter was nice and knowledgeable. They were a bit confused when it came to service. They served the wrong dishes for some courses or served another tables dishes instead of ours. The waiter could have checked in a bit more in between dishes. The shrimp was interesting, it had a tangy creamy taste. My favorite dish was the veal paradelle, the veal was soft and buttery. I hadn't been here in a few years. My wife and I decided to celebrate Valentine's Day a week early and boy are we glad we chose this restaurant! Their five course prefix menu has absolutely something for everyone and the presentation and exquisite quality of food. makes it one of the finest Italian restaurants in New Jersey. They have incredible cocktails probably the best old-fashioned we've ever had, a wonderful wine list, including wines by the glass and also half bottles which I love. Our server, Gus was not only very knowledgeable about the menu and accommodating. He was also simply a warm, friendly and funny person. Charming dining room with an old school feel. Food and service are very solid and if you are looking for a formal meal with delectable flavors and portions then look no further. Came for dinner and had a good meal. The ambiance inside is like a nicely decorated home and the service was great, very attentive. You pick one appetizer, one entree and one dessert. The bread they brought to the table was decent, sliced baguette or equivalent and a white bread with seeds in it (similar to rye), but honestly it could be better. Neither was as soft as I hoped, but that is minor. They start by bringing out the Ecuadorian shrimp as a bite (one shrimp) which was good. I ordered the parpadelle as my starter and it was a decent size. My only complaint was the primary flavor in the dish was rosemary and I was hoping for more than one strong flavor. The pasta and ragu were cooked nicely. For entrees we split the short rib and the branzino, both a good sized serving. The short rib was cooked well, but was exactly how you expected short rib to be served, over mashed potatoes with jus. There is nothing wrong with that, I was just hoping for something a bit more unique or creative. I feel you could get that dish at many other restaurants, that it would not be reason to come here on its own and did not justify the supplemental charge. The branzino however was divine. Perfectly cooked with lots of flavor. Easily the best dish of the night. They bring out sorbet before dessert, not my favorite but others at the table liked it. This was an elegant location with a vaulted interior and loud atmosphere. The menu was fixed pricing ($72 for four courses) along with a couple extra costs depending on what was ordered. It was odd that the menu had no titles for items, just descriptions of different dishes. The service was appreciated in the beginning but fell off towards the end with our check and dessert taking a while to arrive. To start off the meal, multiple types of bread were given. My favorite was the sourdough. The rye was just alright. The bread was ideal for future dishes though. The first course was an Ecuadorian shrimp. It came in a mustard sauce with vegetables. This was a nice start to the meal. The shrimp was perfectly cooked, and the mustard sauce was tasty too. It was a nice compliment to the shrimp. For my second course, I chose the pappardelle. It came in a braised veal shank and marrow sauce with minced cherry pepper and Italian mascarpone. This was definitely the best dish of the night for me. The pasta was fresh and cooked to my liking while the veal shank and marrow sauce was great. It was a perfect blend of so many flavors coming together. I did not really taste the cherry pepper, but it did not matter because of how good this dish was. I also tried the butternut agnolotti. It came with a sage brown butter and buffalo mozzarella. This was nicely done as well. The pasta again was cooked perfectly, and the sage brown butter was a nice compliment. It was very rich but paired nicely with the butternut flavor. The entrée portion, I had the veal scallopini. It was three pieces of veal with prosciutto, fontina, and eggplant in a wine sauce with hearts of broccoli. This was okay. The veal was tender and very thin, but it lacked seasoning. The sauce was pleasant as well as the cook on the broccoli, but the lack of enough seasoning really threw me off. I also tried the pignoli crusted faroe island salmon that was over roasted eggplants, peppers, onions, and currants with a wine lemon and basil sauce. This was solid. The salmon had a ton of pignoli crusted to it and the cook on the salmon was ideal. The sauce was good as well. The intermezzo consisted of lime sorbet with pineapple and coconut. This was a nice palate cleanser, and the coconut appeared extremely fresh just from the smell alone. It was nicely done. For the dessert course, the crispy banana tart was ordered. It was sprinkled with hazelnut praline and drizzled with caramel sauce along with a side of caramel gelato. This was not too heavy, and the caramel obviously went well with the banana slices here along with the tart. The tart was very crispy and paired nicely with the caramel gelato Again, everything appeared very fresh. I also tried the chocolate soufflé. It was served with pistachio and straticella gelato. The pistachio was alright while the straticella was my preferred choice. I would have liked to see more of a pistachio taste. The chocolate souffle was done right. It has been several years since we have been here, and we thought it was time to come back. I have been coming here since they opened in the mid-1990's. They had no liquor license back then (great times), and the food and service were amazing from day one. Fast forward to Saturday night...we had reservations for my birthday. The request on the reservation was for a table by the window. It was also stated on the reservation that it was my birthday. Upon arrival, the woman at the host stand was oblivious to the fact that we requested a window seat. After we insisted she look at the reservation, she finally gave us a window seat. ( There are a couple of tables for two that are less than desirable, near the columns in the middle of the room - we always want to avoid those tables.) We were seated, and service started wonderfully - just as we remember it. We started looking at the menu, got the wine list, and picked out a Pinot Noir. There were a couple of food specials, but neither appealed. Our waiter came back to take our order, and that was going well....until he actually made us order our dessert when we ordered our appetizers and entrees. I asked why we had to do that, and he said it was because it was "prix fixe". Ummm...WHAT? It's been prix fixe since day one, and we never had to order dessert the same time as our meals. It was upsetting at the time, but even moreso once we finished our dinner and realized we didn't really want the desserts we ordered. We were really full, and definitely would NOT have ordered the Italian Ricotta Donuts (surcharge) the the very dense, very rich chocolate tart. The amuse bouche - surprisingly - was exactly the same as it always was! It might be time for a change....lol The apps and entrees were amazing. Even the sorbet was perfect. Both entrees had surcharges - they weren't anything that should have warranted $8 and $10 surcharges. The little tray of extra dessert they brought out was out of place in a restaurant like this. A few biscotti and some toffee?!?! Seriously? What happened to the cute little pastries - the little tarts, cookies, etc? They should just bring out a small plate of biscotti and keep the candy. Oh, during dinner, our waiter came over and asked what name our reservation was under...lol. Clearly someone screwed up somewhere. Service throughout was attentive. No birthday candle, no acknowledgement, nothing. It's likely we'll come back - the food is excellent. We definitely will NOT be forced into ordering dessert at the beginning of our meal - ever again. If that is indeed a requirement, we'll walk out and never return. read more

Food hits all the marks one expects in a Jersey Italian restaurant, but small things were lacking that just made it fine but not memorable. Dinner is a 4 course pre fixe with a starter and palate cleanser. I had a chicken special as my main course - it felt more like a southern or typical American dish with just chicken, pile of mashed potatoes and gravy everywhere on the dish. The chicken was cooked well but not much there in terms of enjoyable flavors. The dish was also supposed to have prosciutto but I got maybe two tiny bits that could have been bacon. The chicken dish on their regular menu sounded pretty great and more typical Italian but I figured the special would have a bit more oompf(I was wrong) On to issue with 1-2 staff members- they seem to change the vibe as they look to provide Parmesan or black pepper but forcefully provide bare minimum and move on without allowing you to decide if it's enough or you need more. The dessert was very okay. I truly enjoyed the palate cleanser (lemon sorbet) much more than the actual dessert (the chocolate cake). It felts too dense and the cherry sauce just didn't add to the dish and overwhelmed the overall flavor. Truly a wonderful dining experience!! The atmosphere inside is beautiful. Each course of food was amazing!! From the bread on the table upon arrival through dessert. My only complaint was the service at the end of our meal. We had a 630 Tuesday reservation for a group of 6 (business dinner). At 830, the servers took everything off the table (the glasses, the flowers, the candle) and put their coats on and stood off to the side staring at us. It was a poor ending to a really wonderful dinner that left us with a bad taste, hence the 4 stars. I expect better from a restaurant like this. read more

Had a big family dinner here! After our reservation for 9 people was in the system for the next day, the staff quickly acted and were able to accommodate us in a big table and then a table for two. Price fixe menu includes an appetizer, main course and dessert. The space is pretty, dimly lit and intimate feeling. The staff was attentive to us and the food was good. I liked the dining room and they gave us a very nice table for a 5pm reservation on a Fri night. Service was very good also. For evening, it's a $72 price fixe menu. They start you off with complimentary bread - 3 ways plus an amuse bouche of ecuadorian shrimp. The shrimp was fine but I find it alittle strange to have ecuadorian shrimp in an Italian restaurant. If it was amazing, then I get it, but why feature a dish that is "fine". I had the Soft egg yolk raviolo which was cooked perfectly and had nice amount of sage butter sauce. My husband had Tagliatelle and said it was good and just would have liked alittle more ricotta. For main, I had potato crusted redfish and my husband had veal scallopini. For redfish, the crust was soggy so it almost felt like why have it. Taste was good though. My husband said his veal scallopini was fine. For dessert, I had the banana tart and this did beat my expectations. It was delicious. My husband had the chocolate souffle which looked more like a chocolate lava cake - just cooked more. The place blends in with the neighborhood and I almost missed it. Thank goodness there is valet parking. The decor is a little dated but it's cozy. The service was great with attentive staff. Scalini Fedeli has two locations with one being in lower Manhattan and the other in Chatham. They pride themselves on being authentic and upscale fine dining Italian. This review is for the location in Chatham. NOTE: The menu is PRIX FIXE meaning that it is a fixed menu for one price. You choose one starter dish, one main dish, and one dessert, NOTE II: I emailed Scaleni Fedeli about two weeks informing them that I was a vegan and needed to know if they would accommodate me and never received a response. The location in Chatham is a 260-year-old New Jersey farmhouse and it features high vaulted ceilings, antique pine floors, and a sense of Tuscan appeal. The upper floor is where the restrooms are located as well as additional storage. NOTE III: There is limited lighting inside and attempting to look at the menu may require you to use the flashlight option on your mobile device. TIP I: It was easier to view the menu from their website on your mobile device than using the flashlight to look at the menu. Our group had six diners and our waiter provided us with the specials of the day when it was my turn to place my order, I explained that I am vegan, and I do not eat meat, fish, chicken, or animal by-products. There was some confusion as he didn't seem to understand what by-products were, so I explained, milk, cheese, and eggs. My colleagues' dishes from start to end were a flaming train wreck. There were multiple instances of a communication breakdown and each plate added to the building rage in my colleague. My colleague chose the Sauteed Shrimp with saffron oil, seasoned with Italia parsley and fresh rosemary in a sherry plum tomato sauce with cannellini beans. It did not appear that way when presented. It seemed to me that the shrimp was smothered in a crème sauce. My colleague's second dish choice from the Piatti Di Mezzo was the Ecuadorian Shrimp sauteed in a sherry wine and garlic sauce over pecorino and sweat pea puree. His dessert choice was the souffle but more about that later. Fortunately, my dishes were vegan but lacked flavor and any type of creativity. I must believe that the kitchen must have been fully equipped with all sorts of fresh herbs but my Roasted Beet Salad minus the mozzarella was uninspiring even though it came with sundried tomatoes dressed with a pistachio vinaigrette. The kitchen team converted the Penne with Sausage and wild mushrooms in a delicate tomato and basil sauce into a Penne pasta dish with vegetables and enough water to sink the Titanic. It was not surprising as I had consulted the reviews on Yelp and several other sites and noted that Scalini Fedeli is for those who want a fixed menu experience and can order from the options available without modifications. This is not a restaurant that cannot accommodate vegans, gluten-free, as well as dietary restrictions and allergies easily. I honestly felt trapped since the moment that I knew I was invited, and my colleague was locked into dish after dish of disappointment. We've all seen the movie scene where all the diner's tops and forks go down, and the heads turn to the troubled table. That troubled table was where I was seated, and it went like this. My colleague had ordered the souffle but did not get a souffle in lieu, he received something else. It looked like a chocolate ganache smear with berries. He called the waiter over to the table and my colleague who has had issues with the two previous plates was at this boiling point. The waiter came, checked his notes, and remarked very stately that my colleague did not order the souffle. The banter between the two escalated to the point where the waiter offered to bring a souffle within ten minutes and my colleague said, forget about it with some more descriptive vocabulary. It was at this point that everyone's forks went down, heads turned, and the dining room was silent. I never thought I would be sitting at that table. My colleague was correct and the continual errors solely on his plates seemed strangely connected. I received my dessert which was berries but had a huge dollop of Zabaglione with crushed amaretti cookies It was presented phenomenally but I had no explanation to confirm if my plate with the Zabaglione was made without egg yolk. No one ever came and said, 'Sir, the Zabaglione was made with nutritional yeast or another egg replacement. Unfortunately, not one staff member said anything even when my untouched plate was picked up. I want to be very clear that Scalini Fedeli is a remarkable location, and I am sure that the dishes are amazing as told by many reviewers from across all platforms. Restaurant ambiance: old school Italian - Tuscany. Great for small gatherings, dates etc. It is on the smaller side and gets busy so reservations are a MUST. When we went the restaurant was packed. Menu: Extensive menu with plenty of seafood and meat options. Loved the porcini ravioli and snapper. Not BYOB but extensive wine list. Cost: $60 prefix for 4 courses. Which is worth every single penny and for the quality of food is a steal. Service: exceptional. Glass was never empty, plates were cleared quickly and courses were brought out in a timely manner. My husband and I went for our anniversary. Let me start off by saying restaurant (though dated and older) is very nice, romantic. We loved where our seat was it was intimate and we could still people watch. The food was very good, we didnt mind the pri -fix menu and the drinks were also good. What bothered me, was the utensils, drinking glasses and plates all had a funny odor, keep of like raw chicken or egg. My husband who usually makes fun of me for my strong sense of smell agreed, and having worked in the food industry said it was probably from the dishwasher. Suppose I would say my experience was almost four stars. Price Fixe menu option was a good concept. The dining room is "historical" or maybe hysterical, unless you really like downright old stuff. The food was ok, but at the prices were not worth it to me at least. The egg yolk ravioli as a starter was sloppy - poorly made large ravioli, and dowsed in brown butter / truffle oil butter. The truffle oil ruined it, and it's hard to tell if there was any yolk in the ravioli I could have made at home - the brown butter truffle oil was a waste. As an entree, went with the short ribs. Like it's New York City younger sibiling, it is pricey but far cheaper than a flight to Milan or Florence. The food from start to finish is always amazing. Still solid after all these years. This elegant Italian restaurant retains that old world feel with caring service. But the cuisine has managed to evolve to include a more contemporary flare. They still have some dishes that are true classics for those who are hankering for a Veal Milanese, but the set prix fixe menu is so varied and their specials offer so many lovely options, it becomes hard to choose what to order! Tonight we dined with our family of six and our table was a medley of so many different dishes. Amongst our orders were a goat cheese and beet salad, the spaghetti arrabiata, the tagliatelle, and the carpaccio of sea scallop. For mains, we had branzino fillet served Mediterranean style, a new take on their red snapper with mushrooms garlic and fennel, the pork chop and the chicken scarpiello. Three of us finished with the chocolate soufflé made to order. I enjoyed the hazelnut and pistachio thin wafer style cookies with hazelnut gelato. Others had berries with zabaglione.
