Attended a birthday party at The Smokehouse, the beer garden located behind the Stirling Hotel. The outdoor space is huge, with a large parking lot, lawn games, areas for children to play, and a spacious tent filled with tables. There is also a small bar where you can order drinks and bring them back to your seat. Our group had a private tent area reserved, and the event was well organized. Buffet-style food had been arranged before our arrival, and we were able to bring in decorations, a birthday cake, and other party favors without any issues. The outdoor bar stops serving around 9:00 p.m., but we were able to move to a covered area near to the hotel restaurant and bar, which was equipped with heat lamps and provided a comfortable place to continue the evening. Service throughout the event was quick and friendly. I would definitely recommend The Smokehouse for group gatherings, birthday parties, or a casual day out. Went with my family,with zero expectations, my previous experiences here were not good, I only went because they chose to go. This review is specific to my food and service to the table. I ordered Daily special "Nashville Hot Chicken" fried chicken. What I got was 3 chicken tender sized pieces of chicken. Here's a clue, if you're going to list us as Fried chicken, indicate that they are chicken tenders and not thighs, breast, wings or legs as is normally served in a "fried chicken" plate. Some of the coating on each piece of chicken was black from over frying. The three pieces were lying in small puddles of oil. The fries and 5 small pickle slices were good. The cole slaw was ok. Service was lacking having to constantly ask for water, which I was drinking. Ambiance was loud with space between tables was practically non-existent with waitresses butt in your face as they're taking the order at the next table. That's it no more! read more

My boyfriend and I came here on a Friday night. Parking was a little tricky but we ended up finding a good spot. We went to the barbecue section in the back of the restaurant, as soon as you walk into your right, there's an order station that accepts cash and card. You grab a menu and browse through till ur ready then return them in the basket. When you order your food, they give you a buzzer and you can choose to either pick a seat in the enormous backyard area or walk yourself to the bar right across and order a drink, soda, alcohol, water, they have everything. When your buzzer rings you're going to walk over to the bar area and on the side is where they will hand your tray of food. There's a selection of napkins and sauces under the tent. The food was great and the service was well. This is definitely a place to bring a family and children. Weather was beautiful, no bugs. read more

Iconic setting that is part Western saloon part ski lodge and extra cozy dining. The smokehouse outback is open in warm seasons and always delivers the best ribs around! We went for a Saturday dinner at 6pm and the wait was a half hour but it was totally worth it. We grabbed drinks on the outdoor patio by the fire and under heaters and by the time we were finishing our drink our table was ready. We had the prime rib and ribs and fish and chips. The food was phenomenally good. I've also had the Tavern Burger and it was great. Their fries are not my kind of fry as it has the batter on it but that's my only complaint. Have to downgrade my rating due to recent experiences with the beer garden. The inside menu is always delicious but the smokehouse menu in the beer garden is awful. Nachos are super weird with a strange cheese and baked beans. Brisket was tough. Wings are small. All of it is extremely expensive for what you get and there's no service, you have to stand in line and then pick up when the buzzer calls you. Love live music and the band was great, but it was so loud I had to put earplugs in. My group couldn't talk to each other. Sad about this experience but I really hope they see this review and make some adjustments. read more

Such a shame the food here has gone down hill. They used to have higher end salads and some inspired meals but now it's basically overpriced bar food. I came here a few weeks ago with my buddy, he enjoyed it so much he told me he went back later that day! Food: I ended up going with a truffle burger which was perfectly done. The truffle mayo and tossed greens in the burger complimented the patty and bacon well and made it wonderfully delectable. My buddy got some voodoo rub wings (not pictured) which were amazing as well. Aesthetic: there is so much to unpack about this place. The hotel itself is a beautiful, wood paneled interior building with a nice rustic appeal, but the outdoor area which I did not experience seems to be the biggest draw of the place. My boyfriend and I have been here twice since last year. The first time was during the winter and we sat at a high top table alongside the bar area near the entrance. I had a spectacular burger which I enjoyed immensely and highly recommend. More recently we returned and were seated in the charming outdoor area where fans were running for our comfort. I enjoyed two mocktails, one with a mix of oat milk and juices which was surprisingly delicious. The fresh oysters were really good and my boyfriend enjoyed fish tacos. I ordered the crab cakes with a mix of fingerling potatoes and corn. The crab cakes had good flavor but not enough crab for my preference and too much filler. But enjoyable nevertheless. Further back is a large but charming beer garden where one can enjoy live music on the weekends. Plenty of parking. Confusing. Came for the BBQ. Hotel restaurant opens at 11:30, the separate BBQ space does not. In fact no one knew exactly when the outdoor BBQ opened. Spoke with no less than 5 staffers and got 5 different answers. Had drinks, lunch, left in the late afternoon and still no BBQ. Oh well. The grounds do kinda look amazing and spacious with several well stationed areas for outdoor dinning. Beers are all local brewed and the food was very good. Wings were HUGE, first was in very disappointing and dry however all the rest were juicy and flavorful. Mac n cheese was on point and the star was the blueberry and peach cobbler: sweet, tart and that vanilla ice cream balanced it all out. There is a ton of staff here and they looked very busy but wasn't actually sure what most were actually doing as we waited fairly long to be served. First time here, and I'm not sure why? Came for brunch with friends. We met under the outside tent in the backyard which was huge, for some cocktails before heading inside to eat. I was amazed by the size of the property, they had a barbecue hut outside, you could smell the smoker going. A band setting up, tented seating area, grass areas with seats with umbrellas, picnic tables, families were laying down blankets for young kids to sit on. There was corn hole & a ping pong table (this I didn't see) As we headed inside to eat, we walked through another covered outside patio (I'm assuming for the restaurant fare?) there was regular seating & bar seating (which we preferred since lacrosse was on tv) The brunch menu had something for everyone. We had clams and the pretzel to start. Then we chose crab cake benny, tavern burger and the biggest black bean burger that I have ever seen! All were delicious. Server was great. We have been here many times but last night was pretty bad food and service. Lamb stew was not stew at all but soup - served with soup crackers with very little lamb. The salmon taco special looked awful and had almost no salmon or even slaw in each one of the three small tacos. one of the tacos had two tiny pieces of salmon about an inch long and an eigth of an inch thick. Not 'special' at all and more like a very lame appetizer. It came with fries that were a surprise and not wanted - no reference to a salad option. Not once did the waiter come and ask how our courses were. We otherwise would have told him. I had to ask for my water glass to be filled. Well I used to like this place until today. I went for an afternoon drink or two. Parked in the additional parking section, towards the beer garden. Went and sat down with my girlfriend. A few minutes later I asked a worker why was there a bag on an empty table with chairs? She said it was a private event. I asked why weren't there any signs. She said there was. True, only they are seen once you go in the beer garden. I asked why not where people can see it right away? The female worker just walked away saying they are all over the place. Feeling weird or probably embarrassed I left and went elsewhere. I called and asked to speak to a manager and the female that picked up asked in reference to? I didn't ask for her I asked for a Manager. I hear her speak to someone else and say they want a manager I don't know what the F**k they want. Another female picks up the phone I asked if she's a manager , she says yes, I ask her name and she doesn't give it to me, how can I help you? So I said that maybe the sign should be at the entrance of the additional parking lot so people can see it immediately. Once you park you talk etc look for a chair or table and don't see the beer garden closed sign because it's identical to the additional parking sign. The manager proceeds to say that she has 3 signs up. I said ok but it should be where people park and see it immediately so not to step into the beer garden she cuts me off and says ok I'm going to leave you here and hangs up on me. I wish I had seen the owner because I hear he is a nice guy and probably would have listen to a customers Idea so others don't mistakenly go into someone's private event. The staff at least today was very rude and didn't want to hear their customers'concerns. so it seems to me that as long as the customer is ok with their situation the staff is ok with it. This place is awesome! The burgers are outstanding. The patio is amazing. This is a super cozy spot with a relaxed atmosphere. There's a huge beer garden. The kitchen smelled delicious, the bartenders were friendly and attentive. The bathroom situation (too few) is less than ideal, but that's not a big deal. I would definitely return to have another meal here. I am taking away one star because we tried to get drinks at the bar and it was too crowded to get anything. Came here for a work happy hour and it's was such a lovely time. I think that the entire ambiance of this place is the star. The outdoor space is covered but open air and there is an entire beer garden behind it. The waitstaff was tentative and provided a plenty recommendations. I only had a few appetizers when we were there like the pretzels and the margarita pizza but it was all fresh. The pretzels came with three dipping sauces one was sweet and cheesy at the same time which an interesting but nice combination. The pizza was flavorful and you could tell just made. While I only had Sauvignon blanc as my drink of choice all my colleagues got beers and cocktails which they all said were great. The outdoor space alone will bring me back here! Even though it's called The Stirling Hotel, it's not a hotel, it's a restaurant and beer garden. The dinner menu has a variety of items. I am usually suspicious of menus with a huge variety...because how can they all be good? Unfortunately, my suspicion was right. The fried pickles had a ton of batter (1 star off). The pretzel sticks tasted more like bread than pretzels (1 star off). The fried calamari came with a weird carrot curry sauce (1 star off). The grilled steak tasted like cheap steak without much seasoning (1 star off). My friend got their crabcakes special and only took two bites. For drinks, I did enjoy my lavender lemonade, and my friends enjoyed a variety of beers and cocktails, so I think the drinks are better than the food. Flies were everywhere in the beer garden. They would feast on the food and open drink containers. This experience was such a bummer, as I was really looking forward to a nice outdoor garden to enjoy dinner and drinks. The dining room inside was a bit busy and they explained they were short staffed . Totally understandable given todays Economy. I ordered a fig and sage mule OMG so good !! Before moving to Chicago, I lived in New Jersey for nearly thirty years. I'd seen the Stirling Hotel. I'd heard of the Stirling Hotel. Somehow, I never went. So when it came time to find a midway point to meet a friend for dinner, it seemed like the perfect opportunity. Don't be too thrown by the 3 stars, you're going to get a pretty good meal here. There are many craft beer options that you don't always find in New Jersey, and a pretty large menu with lots of variety. Maybe too much variety - I'm not so sure about an Asian Noodle dish in a place like this. That said, it's above average bar food. The black bean burger was huge, really well made with nice texture, a sturdy bun, and flavorful sauces. Unfortunately, the patty itself lacked any seasoning whatsoever. I was able to add some salt and pepper to save it, but some ground garlic or even breadcrumbs would have elevated this considerably. My friend had the salmon dish, a fairly sizable portion, nicely cooked and flaky. Again, there was a severe lack of seasoning here, relying far too much on the accompanying sauce than letting the fish shine. And, you're paying for it. The burgers, with fries, are upwards of $20+, which is expensive in Chicago or NYC. But, in a place that is in serious need of some updating and tweaks to execution, that's several dollars too high. It seems to have been here forever, although it was never really a regular hang-out of mine, even during my long-ago "partying" days, even though it has, and always has had, a "lively" bar. In fact, I can count my "memories" on the fingers of one hand-- Memory 1-- I started drinking at around noon in the "beer garden" out back with an old friend and his then-wife (I think my then-girlfriend, anticipating what was to come, had wisely fled the scene). Around midnight, after several "lost" hours, I had somehow wound up at a private residence in Dover with several comatose drunks/drug-addicts, and remarkably had sense and sentience enough to call a taxi to come take me home. I ended the night safely in my abode, kneeling in front of the Porcelain God, paying it vomitous homage, thinking to myself between gasps, "I'm getting way too old for this shite!" Memory 2--- I was several Vicodin's to the wind, my then-girlfriend was wisely MIA, and my old friend's same then-wife, staggeringly drunk, wanted to dance with me, for some inexplicable reason (the Stirling Hotel playlist tends to favor rock "classics" and I guess one of those "golden oldies" caught her fancy). One step away from the oblivion of a coma, I was unable to say no...or much of anything else, for that matter. I don't remember for how long she managed to "sashay" my dead weight around the "dance floor," but it couldn't have been for very long. Later, she availed herself of my Vicodin after complaining of a "headache," swallowing several, and spending the rest of the night compulsively throwing up (my compassionate friend said to her, "Hey, Hon, could ya turn in the other direction while you're puking? I'm gonna start throwing up in a minute if you don't ...") Memories...light the corners of my mind...! Actually, another memory, long after I had sobered up. I brought my birth mother here, for a burger and macaroni and cheese, which, according to word of mouth, was "great." Not bad, but not "great" either, and not really demanding of a return visit, in my opinion. About a week ago, my old friend (he has also sobered up...a feat I once thought impossible...and gotten a divorce; both occurring at approximately the same time, by the way) wanted to come back here. This time, for dinner only. I was agreeable, if not exactly enthusiastic. Supposedly, ownership of the Stirling Hotel has changed since I last came here. Despite that, nothing much seems to have changed, although "macaroni and cheese" is off the menu. The "beer garden" is still in the back. The bar seems as "lively" as ever. The musical "classics" are still being played at high volume. We requested a table off to the side, and perused the dinner menus, like the old men we're becoming. The youthful "ghosts" of our drunken, drug-addled past stared at us in amazement, shook their inchoate heads in bewilderment and frank astonishment, and then mercifully dissipated and disappeared into the miasma of beer, body heat and loud music that still pervades the place. (I imagined I could hear one of those ghosts mutter as it faded away into the void, "What in the hell happened to those two!?!") I'm not a big steak guy, but I wanted a change of pace, and so I ordered a steak. (The best steak I ever had was years ago at Sparks Steakhouse in NYC, where in 1985 Mafia boss Paul Castellano was disrespectfully blown away before he could enter the restaurant and enjoy a last meal; my oldest friend treated me...knowing of my fascination with organized crime...and a business associate to dinner here. The steak was inches thick, and had not an ounce of fat on it. With a cracked crab appetizer, I remember the bill for 3 came to $400, and that was nearly 30 years ago!) If my friend were rating this place, the rating would assuredly be lower. He wasn't happy, and kept saying, "We should have gone to that Greek place down the street!" He ordered an appetizer of eggplant meatballs. I tried one; the taste was ok but I found it had a gummy texture and was off-puttingly chewy. My friend wasn't any more impressed with the chicken parmigiana and spaghetti he ordered. However, I liked what I had. The vegetable root soup, which contained pine nuts, was hot and delicious. The steak I had wasn't necessarily up to the quality of Sparks, but it was tender enough, and well-seasoned. Fresh asparagus and roasted potatoes complimented the meat, and made for a very satisfactory dinner. None of it was cheap, but I enjoyed it. I don't know when (or if) we'll be back. But if you're into "partying," the bar scene here seems to still be going strong (a word of warning: watch out for those ghosts of our drunken, drug-addled past hanging out at the bar!), and I thought the food was decent, if a bit overpriced. Service was friendly, and efficient. (Another warning; if you party, watch out for the Stirling police. We were lucky back in the day; you may not be.) read more
