This is my second time at this pub. The first was almost a year ago when I found it around the corner in my little slice of Jersey City. Obviously the outside is traditional to the moon but once you go in it is a mix of character and new age bliss. They only have one happy hour special at the moment which is a beer, a burger and a shot for $10 which can't be leaked. Unfortunately I wasn't opting for the burger but I was able to get a beer and add a $2 shot to get the most bang for my buck. The tap collection is a great mix. It's one of the few places that has a a selection of local New York Piers, including harp lager, but then you always have your traditional Sam Adams, which this time was a winter white air and of course PBR. The beers come in 10 oz mugs which is an interesting size. They range from $5 to $8 at this moment. And the well liquor is not the type that will give you a headache unless you're just drinking it in excess. When I came there was no one there but it was a slow Monday. Either way the service was great. The music mix was fun and very diverse as well as they have three TVs that you can adjust. Pool tables, arcade game. Retro lounge chairs with a cute custom table. I'm a sucker for a bar where I can go by myself until the home and this one did the trick. Prices are reasonable but I miss the $3 beer days lol Since I didn't get the food and I do think the price is a bit high for the area and giving it four stars. But honestly for what it is I would pay a dollar extra for a beer here versus some other places. read more

I have been here a few times and I mean it is a typical pub like any other. It's pretty clean and it can get full. I had their burger one drunken night and I knew it was good but I didn't quite remember it. So today my husband and I got their burger again and HOLY, it is one of the best I have had in JC. My husband actually told the bartender the story about how we tried a hyped up burger in the area and it was so so and she actually told the owner about it and he made us the burger from scratch. Very nice addition to the McGinley Square neighborhood as the name already implies. If I can describe it any way it has a bit of a dive feel along with a speak easy feel (except it's above ground). Nice selection of craft beers that are constantly rotating. The owner seems to have a sharp eye for picking good craft beers from various breweries. To top it all off all craft draft beers are 5$ flat. Not a huge bar but can fit a decent amount of people. He has a decent selection of board games out and a dart board of your feeling daring. There is also a nice cozy back room with a fire place. It's perfect for those cold winter days. Parking will be a bit tricky, but you may luck out on Bergen Ave or one of the nearby residential blocks. Just a fair warning there are no tvs, but he has a big projector to turn on during football games I believe; just call ahead if that is important for you. Recently MSP has more of a college bar vibe. Glad they are doing well and have also recently added burgers and tacos to their food menu.

Had an issue with a charge on my card, they responded and fixed that issue promptly. I genuinely do appreciate that and it's in my error that I have not updated as quickly. It's a great bar, great atmosphere, and you can meet interesting people there. Good beers in small mugs for $5. Don't be fooled by the low price though. At $5 for a 10oz. mug, that's an $8 pint. A little high for the neighborhood, but not that bad for good beer. The vibe could be better. Bad sound, worse lighting. The crowd can be a little frat ratty on some nights. All good if you're into that, bruh. I've had a good burger here once, but that also depends on the night you go. The bartenders cook them. Tried to order a burger medium and was told they only come well done. The location is a bit random but again, for those prices, it is awesome. They have bar pies which are $10 and pretty good- most places in the area close early so you don't have a lot of other options. They also have flights, beer cocktails, regular cocktails, and a nice bottle selection. Apparently the owner is not interested in adding more food. I think this is a missed opportunity if they actually do not because they will definitely attract more customers. No TVs or anything either. I believe it's a Great Local Spot! With friendly and attentive staff, good food (The Angus Burgers are the best burgers in the city! Reopened citizen kane. Which was way more authentic and fun although that was a long time ago and many things seem like more fun when you're young and dumb(er?). Yes it has beer, a minimum requirement for bars. Yes it barely fills a void in the neighborhood. Owner kept it shuttered for nearly a decade until I'm guessing the fulop administration pressed him to get it open. Bartenders don't know their beer and aren't good conversationalists (working is such a bummer when you've got facebooks and instagrams to look at). But; they are a breath of fresh air compared to the owner who sucks as much as humanly possible on more levels than I'm comfortable posting on Yelp. Hard pass all around. In the Journal Square vicinity, there are (2) popular places to get a good late night burger: the New Park Tavern, and the McGinley Square pub. I have been a regular at New Park Tavern, but I wanted to be fair and see who's burger is better.... well, I announce a winner - 'McGinley Square Pub'... the burger is as thick as the one at the New Park Tavern... however, it wins hands down for being juicy and for flavor. I was told by the staff that the kitchen is open as late as the bar is, which is a policy I like a lot (though on slow nights they may close it a little early... suggest you call ahead...) So look... if you're reading this and haven't gone to McGinley Square Pub, trust my recommendation and give it a try... you will not be disappointed. Also, if you happen to be in the downtown area and want to try something different, venture over... I will say that it's easy to pass by this bar... it's not posh... there's not a huge selection of anything... and I cannot vouch for drinks. I too passed it by many times and thought... 'naaah'.... This place is awesome. Alcohol: They have a good variety of craft beers for $5 each. I've gone two times and both times the bartenders were so nice and assisted me and my friends in finding a craft beer we liked based on our other beer preferences. By checking in on facebook, we also got a free fireball shot. Also, on weekdays they have tons of drink specials such as $2 margaritas and discounted shots. The drinks are definately a great value. Entertainment: They have a variety of games to play such as jenga, chess, never have I ever, cards against humanity, etc. They also have a back room where you can set up a pool table (cups, water and balls supplied) while paying $1 a song to play music on their electronic juke box with any song/album you could want to hear (including new music). Food: They have $8 frozen pizzas which arent the best pizza in the world but get the job done (especially when drunk and craving food). They also have icecream infused with a 5% alcohol content. We had the vanilla bean bourbon ice cream and it tasted almost the same as regular ice cream. While it was $20 for a fairly small container (4 serving sizes apparentely), it was well worth it getting tipsy off of ice cream People: The only downfall to this place is the lack of people there on both a friday and saturday. read more

First thoughts - the front bar is small and dark, the drinks are cheap and with some better marketing I think this place has potential. While considered a local bar for me, the location lends itself perfectly to the college crowd as St. Peter's is next door. I'm curious to see the crowd over time. I just moved around the corner from this place from NY. Is it a change of scenery here? Definitely yes. But this place seems like a saving grace in the neighborhood. My roomie whom is a bartender told me about this place and how laid back and awesome it is. $5 beers?! They also apparently have pizza, which I am sad about knowing after the fact... I bought a $.99 cent slice from the place next door. The bartender was super friendly, though my clumsy self knocked over the ice in my drink when trying to be kind and scoot it towards him for easy reach. What can I say? I'm lovably awkward, or something. I really dig the back room they have. It makes me think of a tucked away speak-easy, and they have candles that give you that vibe as well. The best burger I've ever had in my life, hands down. The woman that makes them kills it. I tend to get meat sweats on burgers of that size but the ingredients that she puts in somehow negates that. And even though they're huge, I have no problem finishing them. Beers are on a constant rotation and the bartenders are on top of the orders, no waiting to grab someones attention. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is the ambience. For a pub like that, especially one with a fireplace, it needs to be a bit darker and cozier. They don't have that part dialed in yet.
