My first visit, I can't wait to return! Fell in love immediately with the ambiance and warmth. True architectural eye candy. Beautifully appointed. Friendly, knowledgable, staff. You know they love working there. Bob, the very charming owner, shared some interesting and highly entertaining RI history. My filet was outstanding along with everything else, the hot bread, the dressing(s), the hand stuffed blue cheese olives for martinis. So much attention to small details that contributed to a special dining experience. Try their signature ginger vodka too! Their crème brûlée has earned all the accolades. Save room!

It's been a long time since we were last here - too long, as in pre-kids, as in 25+ years ago, as in ... well, enough said. So I'm happy to re-acquaint ourselves with this premier restaurant and introduce my adult children to further their palates. And it didn't disappoint! We started with appetizers of escargot (bien sur!), terrine de campagne, and a wild mushroom pate. The escargot were succulent - only complaint was that we needed more garlic butter to sop up with the bread. The terrine de campagne was rustic, fatty, and flavorful. The pate of wild mushrooms was outstanding and delicate. For main plates, I had their crepes de boeuf in a sauce Diane - good and the sauce definitely needed plenty of bread to savor. One daughter had lamb shank, another had duck confit, and my third daughter had boeuf bourguignon. All were tasty and well-cooked but the standout was the boeuf bourguignon: so rich and deeply flavorful. My wife meanwhile, quietly enjoyed and engulfed their vegetarian cassoulet which she said was delicious and satisfying. We still had room for dessert (absolument !) and shared a wonderfully refreshing citron mousse, a rich and intense chocolate custard, and a classic crepes Suzette. Very good. Wait staff and service was excellent; and the owner also made the rounds to each table, a nice personal touch.

What a hidden gem! If you are looking for an authentic French restaurant, then look no further. The ambience is cozy, romantic and just absolutely stunning. The service was great and the Owner came by to chat and told us a bit about the history of the restaurant. Every meal comes with bread and salad. The bread is served warm with a homemade butter. There were several meals on the menu that I wanted to try but I ended up ordering the Coquilles St. Jacques et Crevettes Lorraine, which was scallops and shrimp in a sour cream, bacon and horseradish sauce. It was very tasty. My husband and I were very pleased with our experience and decided we will definitely be back.

There is limited option for vegetarians but the place is known and famous for their mushrooms. The bread there is one of the best i have ever eaten. Note that they do teach you how to bake or cook if you are interested. The soup was great, my wife doesn't eat mushrooms either so we had limited options. The owner was kind enough to make something different which was a great service that he provided by being accommodating. The table was a little small to hold all our dishes. They do offer space for small office parties. Note it says they are the oldest French restaurant in USA.

Delicious classical French cuisine. Ambiance was warm and cozy and quiet. Felt like a trip to Paris!

The oldest French restaurant in America! A space to host exclusive dinner parties, events or take cooking lessons or maybe just a romantic dinner for 2.....They have it all! I don't think French cuisine and vegetarian go together in the same sentence. Esp. If you don't eat mushrooms too. That was pretty much how my dinner was binged on bread and a plate the nice chef put together just for me. The dessert was a shot of molten fudge. Small portion, great impact. I could eat a big bowl of just that. But if you eat meat I'm sure your promised to have a good time. The ambiance is perfect, romantic dim lighting feels like your underground away from all the hustle and bustle. Service was excellent and price is not bad too. Dinner for 2 about $50-$75. Highly recommended!

I honestly was really expecting more. The only thing I liked was my drink which I would get again. The food was truly just sub par. The bread was hot dog bread, not a French baguette. The food was flavorless - i got the bouillabaisse and did not like it at all. We got the pate sampler to share and perhaps that was the only tolerable part to the meal (only reason for the 3 stars but it's me being generous). The price range on this is so expensive. I expected a lot and it was just awful. Would not go back and save your money.

I used to go to Pot Au Feu for lunch regularly when I worked downtown in the early 1990s. We decided to spend our anniversary at the restaurant there this year. In most ways, the restaurant has literally not changed, which is a good thing. To begin our celebration, we opted for the champagne toast that begins with the popping of the cork with a sword. Sabrage is a technique for opening a champagne bottle with a saber. The owner of the restaurant is not just an experienced sommelier but an experienced Sabreur, and a member of an exclusive club of Sabreurs who regales on the history and practice. It is a pricey addition to a celebration but, we thought, well worth the experience, particularly since the owner has the charm and personality to make it even more so. On to the food and wine.... The wine list was short and so it was somewhat disappointing when our original choice was unavailable. Given the difficulty explained to us in obtaining our initial choice, seems logical that it is replaced for now with something of equal quality. We had the Margaux instead and it was just fine. Unlike most French restaurants, this one offers a nice selection of pate choices. The problem was our server could not keep our order straight - there were only 4 to our party. We ordered one pate only to be served another. When we brought it to the attention of the server, she just brusquely said "well, you can have that one." She never brought us what we ordered. We enjoyed the salad intermezzo and they make their own dressings and it was every bit as good as I remembered. We had a varied menu for entrees and all told, probably a 7 out of 10. Overall the food was good - I am a Paris trained chef and one of my guests is a French innkeeper. We had the: Bouillabaisse Marseilles - tasty but sauce was too watery Boeuf Bourgignon - the beef was flavorful but there was nothing else to this classic French stew usually of lardons, small vegetables in a wine sauce. It was just beef that was fairly dry. Definitely a very different preparation but flavorful. Filet Mignon aux Champignons - very good Steak Frites - also very good but the steak was so small that it was a bit shocking; it looked like just a corner piece of beef. We gave the review for stars because on balance, it was a very nice evening. The owner certainly made it very special despite the fact that the service from the waitstaff could've been better. The ambience is also quite nice and one that impressed us all because it felt like we were transported back to a Paris of old that largely no longer exists. We will come back to give it another try on a less formal night for us. The onion soup that kept coming out of the kitchen for other tables looked divine and we would love to try their savory crepes.

Had a great experience with some girlfriends here for dinner. The online menu mentioned foodies beware, but as a self-proclaimed "foodie" I thought it was great. Got the Boeuf a la Bourguignon, which I lucked out because it was the last one they had available for the night. Super good with the cheesy potatoes they serve on the side. We also got escargot, which I was scared to try because I had only had it once at another spot and was a bit chewy, but definitely give it try. Loaded with butter and garlic. It was very good over all. I was pregnant at the time and got the French martini mock-tail and it really good as well. Have been making them at home ever since. The service was really great too!!

My foodie friend Remy Dubois and I attended tonignt. was quite impressed with Pot Au Feu when I went tonight. At first I didn't understand the hype. I walked into a random basement in Providence not really knowing what to expect. The food was exquisite, and the service was pretty good. Compliments to the chef!I was scared they were going to steal my jacket, but was relieved that I got to keep it. Ratatouille was good, no baguettesOwner called me a crybaby

This was my first time at Pot au Feu and it was pretty good. My friend loves this place. I tried the mushroom soup, beef bourguignon, dill potatoes, au gratin potatoes, steak and mushroom crepes, crepes suzette, and pot de creme. I loved the au gratin potatoes. The sauce on the beef is a bit salty and it is thick but the flavor is good. The other items needed a little more salt but it was on the table so no big deal. We liked the flavor of the crepes but it would have been better if the steak and mushrooms were cut into smaller pieces. Warm French bread and butter was a nice start to dinner. The owner came over and talked to us and service was very friendly. The atmosphere is nice. Overall, it was a good visit and we would return.

We looked online for local restaurants to dine at during our stay. Neither my girlfriend or I have ever gone to a French restaurant, so we decided on The Metro Bistrot, due to all the fantastic reviews. I called and spoke with Jay (chef and owner) a week prior to make the reservation. We took an Uber from the hotel, as it's BYOB and brought a couple of bottles of wine. This was a Saturday before a big snow storm the following day. I think due to this, the restaurant wasn't as busy as usual. We ended up being seated in the back room all to ourselves. It was a very nice room that had about 4 tables. Stephanie, our server was an absolute delight! Turns out she works for the hotel as well and she's the one I spoke with when we booked the room. She opened our Beaujolais for us and brought some wine glasses. She kept the bottle chilled in the fridge for us. She went over some of the specials being prepared that night and was able to make some nice recommendations. My girlfriend ended up with the special seafood soup special with a lobster stock as a base. I ordered the escargot. Both were absolutely fantastic. She kept our bread basket filled with wonderful fresh warm bread to soak up all the goodness of the soup and escargot. My girlfriend ordered the boar shank and I ordered the stuffed quail that was stuffed with foie gras and pate. The boar meat fell right of the bone and was some of the most tender meat we've ever had. Both dishes were phenomenal. Jay stopped by our table to chat. He's super nice and even took some photos with us. We ordered 3 different kinds of cheeses prior to ordering dessert. All three we ordered were great! Stephanie also brought us a bowl of crackers to go with the cheese. For dessert, my girl had the cheesecake with an oatmeal crust and fresh berries. I'm not usually one for sweets, unless it Crème Brûlée, so I opted for the Boursin stuffed Shrimp, forgetting it wasn't an appetizer, but a main entree. It was out of this world! All the fish Jay brings in are always fresh and NEVER frozen. He even poured me a small glass of some white wine and it went so well with the shrimp. We cannot wait to go back. The prices are very reasonable and the service and food is second to none. Cheers!

The first time I came, it was a rainy weekday and this time it was a sunny weekend, so I was expecting an even larger crowd; and my prediction was correct. The line was just out the door but because of their awesome staff, the line was moving very quickly. While we waited in line, we could watch them making pastries through the glass, a couple feet in front of us. I admired that level of transparency. When we were third in line, the kindest lady asked us whether we'd be eating in or taking out and she took down our name to help us find a table when it came time. She did the same for the rest of the people in line. She also gave us some recommendations, including the cinnamon bun - apparently they're so good kids cry when they sell out. I didn't intend to order anything with my drink, but I couldn't get the cinnamon bun out of my head so I ordered it along with my iced spiced chai latte. The hen (I think it's their logo) on the aprons of the employees are super cute. We did secure a table. The tables are close together to maximize the number of people who can sit down but I didn't mind. I love their art all around, mostly of birds which I am obsessed with. I love that they have a lot of natural lighting coming through their tall windows. I also like the navy blue and white theme they have going on. The chai latte was perfect. It was the right color (a dark tan), meaning the ratio of tea and milk was good and I could taste a lot of the spices. The cinnamon bun blew my expectations away. The second my teeth made. contact with the icing, it was a magical feeling. I couldn't quite put my finger on what it tasted like, but the closest I got was dulce de leche. It is truly unlike any other cinnamon bun I have ever had. The dough is soft and there is a good amount of cinnamon. It's also $4 which is not bad. I had a bite of their canelé, which apparently requires a lot of work to make. It was very moist, with a great caramelized finish. I am super excited to try their new weekend dinner menu, but also more of their all day menu items.

It feels like her place in the best way -- warm, proud, hands-on. Pastries are legit. Super buttery, flaky enough to make a mess, clearly baked that morning. No sad, sitting-around-all-day vibes. Ordered the breakfast sandwich and that tomato jam needs to be illegal. Sweet, savory, slightly tangy -- it completely makes the sandwich. I kept trying to figure out how to recreate it at home. Not happening. Crispy chicken sandwich was properly seasoned and not dried out (why is that so hard for some places?). Fries were solid too -- crispy, not limp. And the kale salad with roasted chickpeas and chicken made me feel like I had my life together. Fresh, simple, and actually satisfying. It's one of those places you stumble into while traveling and then immediately start googling whether you can justify going back the next day.

We enjoyed a 2021 Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir with our dinner. My husband and I shared two appetizers, the beef tartare and the lobster raviolo. Outstanding! One ravioli priced at $21. I had the Dover soul with almond sauce ($64) and hubby had the roasted duck ($34) for entrees. Both perfect in every way. One minor suggestion is that the Dover didn't need the frisée. It just got in the way.
