We dined at Chantetelle last night, which is part of the Bouchard Inn where we are staying for the week. This restaurant is romantic and quiet with French music setting the mood. We enjoyed a 2021 Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir with our dinner. My husband and I shared two appetizers, the beef tartare and the lobster raviolo. Outstanding! The beef tartare was so fresh and flavorful. Unfortunately, there were only two pieces for $19. The lobster raviolo was filled with mascarpone and lobster topped with trout row. Decadent. One ravioli priced at $21. I had the Dover soul with almond sauce ($64) and hubby had the roasted duck ($34) for entrees. Both perfect in every way. One minor suggestion is that the Dover didn't need the frisée. It just got in the way. Our friends who recommended Chanterelle suggested that we order the Grand Marnier soufflé when we ordered our dinner because we shouldn't miss out on this dessert and it takes some time to bake the soufflé. Oh my goodness...I have never tasted something so divine, creamy and luscious. Silk on my tongue. The service from Nick and the young lady assisting was spot on. It is an expensive restaurant but I think worth the $$$$ Just be aware of the cost so you're not surprised. I've dined at Alinea in Chicago which is a 3 Michelin star restaurant ranked 9th on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list, and Chanterelle might be my 2nd most favorite restaurant after Alinea. Consider Chanterelle for any special occasion!! Went here tonight for our anniversary and the service was next level! I had noted it was our anniversary on the reservation but I feel like restaurants seldom take notice. Not only did many of the staff wish us a happy anniversary, our dessert was inscribed and champagne was received. The server, Max, was meticulous with detail and made sure our dining experience was top notch. We started with wine by the glass then switched to a half bottle of wine, which was perfect for dinner. For an entree, I got the Cornish game hen supreme, which I will be thinking about for a long time. It was well seasoned and the mix of accoutrements made the dish. I wish I got more of the butternut squash/carrot purée!! This will definitely not be our last time at Chanterelle! read more

This restaurant was a culinary delight! I tasted escargot for the first time, it was divine!! The Caesar salad was a unique dish and worth having! They had wine choices by the glass, half bottle and full bottle with choices that will tempt your palette. We stayed at the Bouchard Inn and opted to dine at Chanterelle as it was Restaurant Week in Newport. It was a dark moody ambiance and there is a dress code (it has been recently relaxed a bit). The tables had tiny lights that looked like mushrooms - unclear if it was intentional or coincidental given the name of the restaurant. I had a squash bisque for my starter, a main course of the vegetable option ghost cheese and veggies in a puff pastry), and for dessert the chocolat crème de pot. The others had meat and the other dessert options (pear and soufflé). Everyone at the table thoroughly enjoyed the food. Cocktails were reasonably priced. Service was great. We had someone celebrating a birthday in our party - from the host to wait staff he was wished a happy birthday. We were even able to move our reservation up day of which was lucky and accommodating. read more

I came here last weekend with a friend because we were so excited to check out one of OpenTable's most romantic restaurants in the US! Chanterelle did live up to the hype! The interior was extremely well decorated with a nautical/colonial theme; the seats were extremely comfortable; there was an indoor fireplace going in one corner; and the tables were far enough apart that it didn't feel crowded even when other parties were sat next to us. The service was also incredible. Our "captain" was extremely attentive, and we never had to wait long for our dishes or if we needed something. Onto the food! My friend and I split an appetizer of the mushroom vol au vent (puff pastry), and it was _divine_. The ingredients were so fresh, and the pastry itself was warm, flaky, buttery, and crisp. It was everything I wanted flavor wise and pretty filling even when split in half! I then got the duck a l'orange while my friend got the pork croute. I tend to be a fan of more rare cookings of meat, so the medium-rare (slightly more rare than one might think) duck was just about right for me. The orange reduction sauce was great, too, and the crispy skin they also had was perfect! The only suggestion I might make is that the restaurant default to providing steak knives for the duck, as it was a little tough to cut with a normal knife. I also tried the pork en croute, which was another well-balanced and delicious dish, but pretty well marbled. For someone looking for a lighter entree, splitting this one might be the best move as I could see it being a bit rich if eaten in its entirety. Then the desserts! I got the Grand Marnier Souffle, which was very light, fluffy, and wonderful. It was pretty strong on the Grand Marnier, though, so I would say it's not for the faint of heart. My friend's warm pear tart with vegan vanilla ice cream was also great; it can be difficult to poach pears without it getting too soggy, yet Chanterelle pulled it off! All in all, an amazing meal. Will have to be back again and again! PS with Parking -- they give you a pass so you can park in one of the church parking lots just down the street, so make sure to stop into the restaurant on your way to the lot so you can find a spot easily instead of circling the narrow Newport streets! read more

My husband and I consistently made it a point to visit Bouchards whenever we visited Newport. Our last few visits to Newport, Bouchard's had specific seatings and a price-fixed menu that was not of interest to us. This past weekend we decided to drive to Newport for the day, and while in the car I saw that Bouchard's is now Chanterelle's. We LOVED the menu and were SO excited! AND they have a LOT of availability; basically, we could have reserved any time we wanted. THEN, I spotted a couple of negative reviews where people were turned away due to a dress code. I immediately went to the website and saw no mention of a dress code. We found ourselves very close to the restaurant mid-afternoon and decided to pop in to ask. My husband was wearing a nice pair of long shorts, with a dressy shirt, a stylis hat, and boat shoes. I was wearing linen dress shorts, a WHBM pullover top, boat shoes, and my MK purse. I need to emphasize this because we were not dressed like slobs. But that is how we were treated. At that point, we were informed of the dress code and after looking us up and down, with a grimace on her face, we were told that our sneakers were unacceptable. My husband started to challenge the sneaker comment to say that we were visiting a boating community, and were wearing boat shoes. He suddenly stopped and I said "well, we could try to find something else to wear and maybe we can come back". As soon as we walked out the door, my husband said I'm appalled at how we were treated just now, and will never go back. Then we looked up Castle Hill's dress code, which is also a fine dining establishment in Newport, amazing menu and food, AND "smart casual" dress code clearly outlined on their website - no flip flops or tank tops, but shirts and sneakers are welcome. TO all who have had this same experience GO to Castle Hill! I guarantee you will not be treated like garbage For wearing boat shoes. As we walked around Newport there were a lot of people dressed in a smart casual way, with sneakers - it ocurred to us that perhaps the reason there was SO much availability at Chanterelle's during the busy season is their dress code and rude hostess (at least the hostess that was their at about 3pm on Sunday 8/11). And by the way Chanterelle Owners when people are seated at a table, NO ONE CAN SEE THEIR SHOES. read more

I recently came here for dinner with my husband. The restaurant was dimly lit, making the experience feel really intimate. For a starter, I had the Mixed Green Salad, and a glass of Pinot Grigio. The salad was the perfect amount and the dressing paired well with the pecans and butternut squash. For my entree, I ordered the Cornish Game Hen Supreme and loved it - the buttery sauce was delicious. The small sides (mashed potatoes and a mixture of sweet potatoes, carrots, and ginger) was a nice bonus. My husband ordered a Special - Swordfish Steak - and he loved it. We finished our dinner with Chocolate Mousse Profiteroles - yum! Throughout our stay, the server was fantastic - knowledgeable and attentive. I highly recommend Chanterelle, and would love to dine here again during my next trip to Newport. read more

Been a number of times - the most consistent top restaurant in Newport (more than Aurelia or the chanler). We love the fresh takes on French classics. Winter menu includes a great mushroom vol au vent, foie gras, scallop with corn soubise, and special cauliflower flan (yes, and good!). You should go for a regular dinner or special occasion. Five stars all the way. Food, service, ambiance. Started with the Truffle Cheese Mousse. Light, flavorful with a butter poached lobster claw and pea purée. Just yum. We both had filets (it was a steak kind of night). Delicious and elegantly served with a carrot/ginger mash and potatoes, both nicely piped next to the filet. I had the Grand Marnier soufflé and my wife had the pear tart. Both delicious and served with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine to celebrate our anniversary. The Margaux we drank with dinner was a perfect pairing for our meal. Dan, our "captain" was a wonderful guide through your meal. All in all, a truly 5-star experience. read more

If I could give half, I would have given 3.5 stars. The service was perfect. Attentive (but not too attentive) knowledgeable, skilled (pouring sauces onto desserts and cocktails from elevated heights). We got two appetizers, the Wild Mushroom Vol Au Vent and the Truffle Cheese Mousse. Both were very good. The Mousse had more depth but neither disappointed. For entrées, I got the Duck A L'Orange and my wife got the Pork. The duck was a sliced breast with a piece of crispy skin on top. Both came with a little vignette that included some puréed vegetables (we really liked the carrots prepared that way). The duck was a little tough, but the flavor was good. When asked how I would like the duck cooked (medium/rare, etc.) I asked for the chef's recommendation, so that wasn't the issue. Maybe it wouldn't have been as noticeable if they'd given me a steak knife, but both of us were given butter knives. It was funny because in the dining room, you'd keep hearing the scraping of a butter knife against a plate as people tried to cut meat with the incorrect tool. My wife said the pork was just okay. When we ordered our entrées we were told that if we wanted the soufflé, we needed to order it with dinner order, and we did. I don't usually order dessert, but I'm glad we did. This was the tastiest part of the meal. It was amazing. The texture and flavors of the soufflé and the sauce were just incredible. As for the ambiance. The restaurant is very pretty and decorated nicely. The level of service (and really the whole vibe) is what you'd usually find at places with far more expensive menus. Most of the entrées are around $30, with a couple around $50. The appetizers were under $20, but the vibe was far more, hmm, I don't want to say stuffy, but you know what I mean? They were taking themselves very seriously. It's definitely the kind of place where people with an average appetite will need to get an appetizer, an entrée and dessert . . . maybe even an extra appetizer for the table. Our meal was divine. Started with the mushroom and asparagus pastry that perfectly showcases the flavors of the vegetables in a light butter sauce. The pork entree was perfectly cooked. For dessert, our poached pear tart was perfectly poached with a gorgeous coconut based vanilla ice cream. Fabulous, from the time we entered, we were greeted personally by the hostess. Escorted to a nice table. The restaurant was decorated nicely for the holidays. It was quiet, however, every table was full. Our Captain was explanatory about our dining experience. Cocktails were offered, the menu and special items were explained. Questions about food allergies and preferences were offered. The presentation was excellent and the flavors were absolutely amazing compliments to the chef. This is the dining experience you don't want to miss. I would highly recommend dining at Chanterelle Restaurant. Update: This was our favorite restaurant for a long time. The food was the best on the island and was truly a world-class establishment. Unfortunately the chef no longer works here, and it is a step below. The quality of ingredients were the same, but the execution has definitely missed a step. Restaurant Bouchard has held the long-running title for best restaurant in this incredible foodie town. Chanterelle is the same chef from the previous 5 or 6 years at Bouchard, and this place is still the best restaurant in Newport. There are still numerous classic dishes from Bouchard, with new incredible dishes added to the menu. This place is also extremely accommodating to allergies. My husband and I, spur of the moment, decided to go out to Chanterelle. The menu and reviews looked good so we accepted an 8:45pm reservation. Please note that I packed hurriedly for this trip and didn't have my normal 'wardrobe' but nowhere was there any mention of a dress code. We arrived to check in - I was wearing black slacks and a black and white linen blouse but I had forgotten to pack black flats so I was wearing some new black and white converse sneakers - and I was refused entry because of my sneakers!! We were sent down the to their sister restaurant - completely different in nature - where we were lucky enough to sit at a bar in front of a tv. The noise level was extremely high and the menu was radically different from Chanterelle. $205 later, we left after having reviewed Chanterelle's website and there was absolutely NO mention of a dress code. Totally aggravated. We walked back to Chanterelle to speak with a manager - none on site? I'm completely appalled. And you should be too. read more

I had a reservation last weekend for 4 people at 615pm and someone in my party got violently Ill from lunch at the Seafood Festival in town. we called when we realized we would not leave her and I was charged $100 ($25 each person) because I didn't call by 2pm which is when we were finishing up lunch. I called twice and left 3 emails and the manager never called me back. This certainly could not be helped and we were punished by paying what I think is a lot of money as a senior citizen. Good business for them because they collected from me and I'm sure turned the table as well ( There were hundreds of people in town due to Seafood Festival). No compassion and terrible customer service in not getting back to me. Shameful!! read more

On our anniversary. . from the moment we stepped through the door to the moment we left it was a grade A experience. A low light romantic atmosphere. Small. Intimate. A highly knowledgeable maitre d' described the menu with an almost hypnotic flair that had us salivating. Attentive service without the pretense. The dishes we were served as works of art, both visually and gastronomically. Its the kind of setting in which one wants to linger. Melt in your mouth filet mignon! Lobster bisque..with ample lobster! Wild mushroom ravioli! Wine. Dessert. We expected the bill to come to upwards to $300..but were stunned when it arrived at little more than half.
